Thurs. 12/30/99 Doherty, White Pace Cushing
Ashburnham, Mass. -- Cushing Academy, behind two goals and an
assist from Brian Doherty and four assists from tournament MVP Chris
White, won the Watkins tournament with a convincing 5-2 title game win
over Lawrence Academy here today.
Cushing, which scored the first five goals of the game, dominated play in the first period, outshooting Lawrence, 11-3. But Bo Christini had a big period in the Lawrence net, keeping it a one-goal game.
In the second period, both teams were skating well, though not taking
advantage of the many man- advantage opportunities presented them. At the
11:38 mark, Cushing defenseman Ryan Lannon scored on a freak bounce
over the head of Christini that seemed to deflate Lawrence. Doherty would
then score his two goals (the first on the PP) within the next three
minutes to clinch the victory for Cushing. .
Mike Woodford scored 52 seconds into the third period, which pretty
much demolished any thoughts of a Lawrence comeback. However, Lawrence
would get goals from Tony Barrile and defenseman Steve
Wood to cut Cushing's final margin of victory to 5-2. In the game,
Cushing outshot Lawrence 30-14. There were 23 minor penalties in the game,
many of which were questionable.
In the third-place game, Noble & Greenough got a pair of goals from Ben McManama and three assists from Chris Owen to gain a 5-3 victory over Northfield- Mt. Hermon. Kevin Richardson had three assists for NMH.
In the fifth-place game, Berkshire got a pair of goals from Nick Dancey,
and two assists from both Alex Watts and Adam Spirk to
gain a 3-0 win over Kent.
In the seventh-place game, Gunnery picked up its first win of the tournament, topping Canterbury, 4-0. Justin DeLauri had two assists to help keep Canterbury winless in the tournament.

Taft Takes Title -- in 2 OT's Lawrenceville, N.J. -- A Ryan Shannon goal with a little over two minutes left in the second overtime period gave Taft a 3-2 win over defending champion Choate in the title game of the Lawrenceville School Tournament. On the winning goal, Choate was pressing in the Taft end when the puck hopped out of the zone, creating a 2-on-1. Tim Pettit made a nice pass to open linemate Ryan Shannon, who banged it home. The game -- three 15-minute periods plus over 27 minutes of overtime -- ran 72-plus minutes and featured a good pace, solid hitting, end-to-end action and excellent goaltending by a pair of juniors, Mark Spadaccini of Taft and Chris Schod of Choate. Choate struck first on an early powerplay goal as junior Chris Snizek, from behind the net, got the puck out to Stephen Baldassarri in front for a one-timer. Taft tied it up with a powerplay goal of their own when Christian Jensen scored on a great shot from the low slot. In the second period, Taft, on a powerplay goal, took a 2-1 lead which held until midway through the third when Choate's Snizek, on a breakaway, fired the puck top corner to tie the game up at 2-2. After that, the game consisted of back-and-forth action. Taft had a golden opportunity to win it when, with a couple of minutes left in regulation, Taylor Leahy had a shot at an open net but Choate goaltender Schod dove across the crease and got a piece of it, deflecting it up over the net. Early in the second overtime, Choate had a goal rubbed out by a man in the crease violation. The referee's whistle had clearly blown, so there was no ensuing controversy. Tim Plant had a shot at winning it all for Taft in the second OT but Choate's Schod stopped him on a breakaway. Several minutes later, Taft got the game-winning goal, thus wresting the championship from Choate, which had defeated Taft in the finals for the past two years. Spadaccini had 36 saves on 38 shots for Taft, while Schod had 47 saves on 50 shots for Choate.
Once Again, it's Deerfield Milton, Mass. Dec. 19 -- For the third straight year -- and the sixth time this decade -- Deerfield has won the Flood-Marr Tournament. This year, like last year, its victim was Hotchkiss, this time by a 3-2 score in a taut, well-played game. 6'3" Harvard-bound RW Rob Fried, who was named the tournament MVP, got the winner when, with 4:20 remaining, he fired a rocket that tucked up under the crossbar behind Hotchkiss goaltender Kyle McNulty. It was the second goal of the afternoon for Fried, who figured in all three Deerfield goals. In the first half, Deerfield struck first when, on the powerplay, they worked it down low and senior center Chip Canner converted at the 13:29 mark. Hotchkiss got it right back when a Brent Robinson shot slipped past Deerfield goalie Matt Hanson with a second left in the half. In the second half, with 9:11 remaining, Deerfield went up by one again, taking a 2-1 lead on Fried's first goal of the day. Hotchkiss senior defenseman Andy Laskowski got it right back, though, tying up the game 1:31 later. Basically, this game could have gone on into next week with the two teams just swapping goals -- there is not much separating them -- but today time ran out on Hotchkiss. Both teams, it should be noted, had solid goaltending, strong defense, and several solid lines. The game was a clean affair -- with only three penalties whistled against Hotchkiss and two against Deerfield. In the third-place game, Kimball Union, last-place finishers a year ago, bombed Nobles, 7-2. The heroes were senior center Josh Truitt, who had a five-point afternoon (3g,2a) and his linemate, senior John Levesque, who had a four-point day (3g,1a). Junior center Patrick Slipp scored KUA's seventh goal. For Nobles, Princeton-bound center Chris Owen had a goal and an assist and Kevin Lyons had a goal. In net, John Czaplinski got the win for KUA while Scott Annan suffered the loss for Nobles. In the fifth-pace game, Westminster and Andover battled to a 1-1 tie. Adam Carlson scored for Westminster, and Scott Darci scored for Andover. There was a five-minute overtime period in which Westminster's Matt Kovacich and Jeff Natale almost combined to produce a goal, but almost wasn't enough and time expired. There was no shootout (and nobody minded at all). Andover's Theodore Novak, and Westminster sophomore Craig Grenier were strong in goal. In the seventh-place game, Junior Joe Versino wound up a strong weekend with a goal and two assists to pace Salisbury to a 4-1 win over Milton. Salisbury's other goals were by sophomore J.R. Pakan (whose older brother, Steve, picked up an assist in Deerfield's 3-2 win in the championship game later in the day), Brooks Boucher, and Matt Vagvolgi. Mark Angeloni scored for Milton. Here's the all-tournament team, named by the coaches. Deerfield: Steve Pakan, Oriel McHugh, Guy Smith, Tyler Kolarik, and Rob Fried (MV). Hotchkiss: Brent Robinson, Adam Foote, and Kyle McNulty. Kimball Union: John Czaplinski and Josh Truitt. Nobles: Chris Owen and Kevin Lyons. Milton: Rob Weller. All are seniors except for McNulty and Czaplinski, who are junior goaltenders. Taft Takes Lawrenceville Title We're still waiting on details and with everyone headed hither and yon for Yuletide we may be waiting for awhile. But check back periodically. We may get something. For now, all we can tell you is that Taft defeated Choate, 3-2 in 2 OT's. Sat. 12/18/99 Thayer Takes Barber Tournament Southborough, Mass., Sat. Dec. 18 -- In a crisp, well-played game, Thayer Academy came from behind to defeat St. Sebastian's, 3-1, in the Barber Tournament championship game this afternoon. In the first period, St. Sebastian's came out flying, forcing the play and requiring Thayer goaltender Bill Petrucci to keep his team in the game. Finally, though, St. Seb's got on the board as Mike Morris cut diagonally across the slot, waited for the right second, and fired a shot that broke past Petrucci for the period's only goal. After that, Petrucci shut down St. Seb's the rest of the way, as, bit by bit, the offense began to come around. Seconds into the third period, Thayer finally evened things up when Steve Greeley converted a Ryan Whitney point shot. A couple of minutes after that, it was Greeley again. This time the center hit Patrick Donlan, who was breaking toward the net, with a nice pass that Donlan quickly directed past St. Sebastian's goaltender Dave Cacciola at the 3:02 mark. Shortly after, Scott Selig jumped on a rebound of a Donlan shot to give Thayer an insurance goal. Notes: Both Thayer and St. Sebastian's are young teams this season, each skating a slew of 9th and 10th graders. In a year, maybe two at the most, they'll both be very, very tough.... Key Thayer forward Lou Eyster is out with an injury and isn't expected in the lineup for about a week. Flood-Marr Recaps:

Fri. 12/17/99 Fri. Dec. 17 Highlights On a chilly New England night, Cushing Academy topped Lawrence, 4-3 in the nightcap at the Lawrence-Groton Tournament. Cushing jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on a pair of goals by left wing Brian Doherty, but, after a scoreless second period, Lawrence struck back with a pair of less than two minutes apart early in the third. Junior Richard LaBelle scored first, with an assist going to Stephen Wood. Then Tony Barrile even the game at 2-2 on a nice shot from the slot. The tie was short-lived, however, as 52 seconds later Cushing senior Kurt Wright scored to put Cushing ahead to stay. With 4:46 remaining, a Brett Peterson shot from the point caromed off the rear boards out to Michael Woodford, who put it behind Lawrence goaltender Bo Christini for a 4-2 lead. Lawrence defenseman Robbie Barker, playing the game with a bad case of the flu, cut Cushing's lead back to one when he scored on a backhander from a scramble in front of Cushing goaltender Ryan MacNeil. Over the past few years, the Lawrence-Cushing matchups at this tournament have produced some barnburners, but this was not one of them. Tonight's game was choppy and uneven, never really developing the pace fans had anticipated....The highlight game of the day was the morning tilt between Cushing and the New England Coyotes. Cushing had leads of 4-1 and 6-3 but the Coyotes fought back and forced overtime. That was as close as they would get, for Brian Doherty and Michael Woodford teamed up for an overtime beauty, giving Cushing a 7-6 win. Earlier, Ben Murphy and Kurt Wright each had a pair and Jack Celata and Yale Lewis added single goals for Cushing. Eric Lundberg and Michael Viens scored for the Coyotes. In the late game at the Flood-Marr, Nobles, behind a pair of goals from Kevin Lyons, and single goals from Chris Owen and Jake Clapton, beat Andover, 4-2. In the early game up at Exeter, host Exeter topped Northwood, 7-5, as Jacob Jackson notched a hat trick, while Conrad Barnes had a pair of goals and Jay Gosselin and Alex Shaine had one apiece. For Northwood, Lou DiMasi had a pair of goals while Matt Schmidt, Justin Barauskas, and Sean Kotary had ope apiece....In the late game, Gov. Dummer played giant killer again, this time knocking off Exeter. GDA sophomore goaltender Gabe Winer who on Thursday had, according to the GDA coaches, stopped 48 of 49 shots in GDA's 4-1 win over Northwood, was the story again today, this time working the mojo to the tune 35 saves -- many of them spectacular -- in GDA's 5-3 upset win over Exeter. Actually, Exeter -- on goals by Jon Boyle and Ed Caron -- held an early 2-0 lead but GDA, on goals by Justin Fishman, Jeff Desmarais, Mike Mullins, and Ryan Shelley forged ahead. A late goal by Exeter's Jon Boyle -- his second of the day -- cut the lead to 4-3, but GDA's J.J. Morrissey added an empty-netter for the 5-3 final. Exeter outshot GDA 38-21. Mike Saraceni was in goal for Exeter.... At the Avon Tournament, the Berkshire School topped Tabor, 4-3, with a Will Elliott goal winning it at 3:05 of overtime. In regulation, Ryan Brewer, Nick Tsiantar, and Adam Sprik scored for Berkshire while Pat Kane, Chris Zimmerman, and Dan Skoglund scored for Tabor. Artie Imbriano made 25 saves for Tabor, while Jeff Pietrasiak picked up the win for Berkshire, stopping 13 Tabor shots. At the Barber tournament, St. Sebastian's, behind goals from Tim Coskren, Sean Sullivan, John Toffey, Matt Burke, Kenny Roche, and Tony Coskren, beat the Middlesex School, 6-1. In early action at the Flood-Marr, Deerfield topped Andover 4-2. Goal scorers for Deerfield were Guy Smith, Oriel McHugh, Dave Thomas, and Tyler Kolarik, (the latter with an empty-netter). Nate Cardoza was in goal for Avon, and Matt Pane for Gunnery. Defenseman Marty Driend scored Gunnery's lone goal....Berkshire topped Loomis-Chaffee, also by a 3-1 score. Berkshire's scorers were Ryan Brewer, off a nice pass from Patrick Topping; Nick Dancey, on a blast from the point, and Nick Tsiantar, an empty-netter. Conrad Barnes had a pair of assists and Exeter outshot Culver 38-22.... It wasn't a good day for the Northwood School, as they came out on the short end of a pair of upsets. First, Pomfret knocked the off, 6-4, then Governor Dummer, behind a remarkable goaltending performance by sophomore Gabe Winer, stole off with a 4-1 win in the day's late game....Check out the Exeter Tournament Scoreboard.
