Higgins OT Goal Gives Avon Prep Title

Sun. March 5; Salem, N.H. -- Avon Old Farms completed its journey from #4 seed in the west to New England Prep School titleholders with a tense, 3-2 overtime win over Deerfield Academy here this afternoon. It was Avon's first title since 1993.

The winning goal came when senior defenseman Mick Mounsey, who had a huge game for Winged Beavers, faked a shot, stepped around his defender, and fired a low shot on net. The puck deflected off a Deerfield player and right onto the stick of junior Chris Higgins, who wrapped it around Deerfield sophomore goaltender Matt Hanson at 1:45 of overtime,

As Avon players and fans erupted into a wild celebration, the Deerfield players hung their heads, stunned. For several players on the team, notably seniors like Tyler Kolarik, Rob Fried, and Chip Canner, it was their third straight appearance in the prep title game -- and third third straight one-goal loss. In 1998, Deerfield lost to Cushing, 1-0. Last year it was Exeter, 3-2. And then this, an afternoon when Tim Warner, Avon's sophomore goaltender from Waltham, Mass., stymied the Big Green time and again.

At the start it looked pretty promising for Deerfield. Using their speed to advantage they were able to get off frequent shots at Warner. At 4:59, the Big Green got on the board when senior wing Jeff Gottschall took a pass from center Chip Canner, held the puck nicely as he moved right to left across the top of the crease, finishing the play off by slipping the puck between Warner's right pad and the post.

It was the first goal Warner had given up in the playoffs. He'd shut out Taft on Wednesday, and Lawrence Academy last night.

At 11:31, Avon tied it up at 1-1 when junior Ryan O'Connell took a wrist shot from the slot that broke past Hanson to tie the game at 1-1.

Deerfield took the lead right back, going up 2-1 when Fried banged home the rebound of a Kolarik shot at 13:54. It also looked as if Avon, which, on top of playing the late game Saturday night, just doesn't have the speed of Deerfield, might not have the legs to make it through the afternoon.

After the game, longtime Avon coach John Gardner said, "In the first period, Deerfield was all over us. We changed our forecheck for the second  and that took away some of their offense."

"By the end of the second period," Gardner added, "I thought we were playing well."

It was with exactly 21.8 seconds remaining in the second that Avon tied it up when Dan Pike flipped the rebound of a Mounsey point shot over Hanson. Mike Warner also got an assist on the play.

The third period was scoreless, though both teams had numerous chances and both goalies came up big time and again. Warner, simply to get his team into overtime, came up with two dandies in the final minute, making a pad save to stop Kolarik with 20 seconds left and then making another excellent pad save on a screen shot from the point by Deerfield defenseman Guy Smith with about 10 seconds left.

Overtime didn't last long. Afterward, Mounsey credited the Deerfield coaches, who'd noticed that Deerfield liked to block shots from the point. "We were told between periods to fake the shot and step around the defender," Mounsey said.

That's exactly what happened. Fried, covering the point, went down to block the shot, and Mounsey stepped around him, firing a low shot on net. The puck deflected to Higgins, who finished off the play -- and Deerfield.

Afterward, Deerfield coach Jim Lindsay said, "We played well in the first, and had them on the run. Then we gave up the weak goal (making it 2-2) -- and it changed the momentum"

Asked what he told Hanson, who had another great game, though he faced fewer shots than in his 42-save 2-1 win over Cushing, Lindsay said, "I told him, 'We wouldn't be here today if it weren't for you yesterday.'"

Across the hall, Gardner cited "good team defense, good goaltending, and being opportunistic" as the keys to his team's run. "Everybody says, well, we lost five games, but you experiment during the season sometimes. Our big confidence builder came when we went down to Taft and beat them in their own barn on Wednesday."

Mounsey agreed. 'That game told us we could beat the big teams," he said, pointing out that his team had lost to Choate twice, and Taft, Hotchkiss and Deerfield once each during the regular season.. "Some teams had our number," he added.

Warner, named Tournament MVP by USHR,  agreed. "I knew we had the talent, but going into the tournament, I wasn't sure of our chances...there are a lot of good teams here. But over the last couple of weeks we just turned it up."

Gardner said that when Mounsey came to Avon from Concord (N.H.) High School in the fall of 1996, he promised him that by the time he graduated he'd have a prep school championship.

This afternoon, that promise came true.

Deerfield, Avon Advance to Finals

Sat. March 4; NEPSIHA Semifinals -- In a pair of taut games played before a packed house of 2,500 fans at the Salem, N.H. Icenter (their spelling, not ours), Deerfield edged Cushing, 2-1; and Avon Old Farms beat Lawrence Academy, 2-0.

Deerfield and Avon will meet for the New England Prep School title at 3:00 pm today (Sunday).

In the first game, Deerfield's 2-1 win over Cushing, the difference was Matt Hanson, Deerfield's sophomore goalie, who kicked out 42 Cushing shots, many of them labeled. Hanson was beaten once in the game, just 2:08 in, when Yale Lewis converted a Ben Murphy pass.

Once Cushing had the early lead, they kept pressing, and had a huge edge in play after one -- but only had the one goal to show for it.

Deerfield, perhaps realizing how fortunate they were to get through the first period only down by one, came out and took it to Cushing in the first 5-10 minutes of the second period, the only time in the game when Deerfield had a territorial advantage. The big payoff for Deerfield came when senior center Chip Canner came out of the corner with the puck and skated it to the front of the crease, where Tyler Kolarik poked it through a crowd past Cushing goaltender Ryan MacNeil.

After two periods, it was a 1-1 game.

The game-winning goal came in the third when Deerfield's Dennis Kim, on a 3-on-1 rush, made a nifty pass to linemate Dave Thomas, who directed it past MacNeil with 6:20 remaining. Glenn Sanders also picked up an assist on the play.

52 seconds later, Cushing's Jack Celata was whistled off for a cross-check and, then, 43 seconds after that, teammate Michael Woodford, who struggled to get going all night, was whistled off as well -- and for the same infraction. Frustration was setting in.

While Cushing managed to successfully kill both penalties, time was also running out on them.

With 2:20 left, things got very interesting when Deerfield's Kim took a holding penalty. Cushing had several chances to tie the game, one a glittering one that Hanson stopped. But that was all she wrote. Time ran out and Cushing, the #1 seed in the east, is done for the season.

Before leaving the Cushing-Deerfield game, it should be mentioned that the ice surface at the Icenter was a bit slow due to an afternoon compressor failure. However, the problem was fixed and the ice improved as the evening went along. The ice here is also Olympic-sized, undoubtedly a factor in Cushing's being unable to establish the punishing forecheck and physical game that's central to their success. It should also be noted that Deerfield's quickness enabled them to slip checks well.

In the nightcap,  Avon Old Farms got a shutout from sophomore Tim Warner and goals from Bill Magnuson and Scott Horvath in a 2-0 win over Lawrence Academy.

Avon's first goal came just 1:28 into the game when Magnuson picked up a loose puck in the slot and backhanded it by Lawrence goaltender Bo Christini.

After that, it remained a 1-0 game until early in the third period, when Chris Higgins and Scott Horvath broke in alone on Christini. Higgins flipped a nice pass to Horvath who beat Christini five-hole to give Avon a 2-0 lead at the 1:22 mark.

In the third period, Avon was called for three minors -- the only penalties whistled in the period -- and a couple of them were dubious. Avon played most of the game's final minutes shorthanded, as they were called for too many men on the ice with 3:33 left and then, 35 seconds after that penalty expired, were called again, this time being forced to play the remaining 1:28 of the game shorthanded. However, Avon was able to weather the storm and the Winged Beavers are on their way to the finals for the first time since 1994.

In the Simmons/Huntington Tournament, Northfield-Mt.Hermon got a third period goal from Hunter Greeley to sneak past Choate, 3-2, and into Sunday's final.  Their opponent will be Westminster, which got strong goaltending from sophomore Phil Lauderdale and goals from five different scorers en route to a 5-1 win over Exeter. NMH and Westminster will meet in their final at 12:30 pm.

In the Div. II semis, both Tilton and Brewster picked up OT wins and will face each other in a 10:00 am title game.

Sat. Feb. 12 Prep Highlights
Due to a computer error (consider it our belated Y2K bug), we're missing details on a number of today's games, most notably Tabor's 3-2 upset win at Lawrence Academy. However, this typist saw #1 Taft, playing at home, rip off three straight third period goals to defeat archrival Hotchkiss, 4-1. It was #5-ranked Hotchkiss' third straight loss -- and the third straight game in which they've been held to just one goal. Today, after a scoreless and tentative first period, the game opened up in the second. At the 2:42 mark, with Taft on the powerplay, Tim Pettit took a perfect pass from Ryan Shannon and, from just inside the blue line, unleashed a slapshot, cleanly beating Hotchkiss goaltender Kyle McNulty. That seemed to wake Hotchkiss up, as they dug in a little harder, got some good opportunities, and finally cashed in when Adam Foote tucked a backhander by Taft goaltender Chris Ries at the 8:37 mark. With the score tied at 1-1, Taft came out for the third and took the game over with the help of a pair of goals from Ben Driver. The first, which would turn out to be the game-winner, came at the 1:01 mark. At 10:55, Driver scored again, this time scooping the puck past McNulty from his knees. Taft's final goal came at 12:06 when Pettit notched his  second of the day, converting a picture-perfect pass from linemate Christian Jensen. Taft, we should point out, looked very sharp in this game, combining grit and skill in equal measure. They had the forecheck going, they utilized their team speed, and they played a very strong physical game, time and again winning the little battles for the puck. This team could be the real deal..... Of course, Cushing could be the real deal, too. Today the Penguins traveled down to New Milford, Conn. and spanked Canterbury, 9-2, pumping in five third-period goals. James Solon and Chris White each finished the day with two goals for #2-ranked Cushing.... Ben McManama had a goal and two assists in #9-ranked Noble & Greenough's 4-1 win over Milton... Sunday Update (of other Saturday games): A goal by Paul Muniz with 46 seconds left and another great goaltending performance by Artie Imbriano gave #6-ranked Tabor Academy a 3-2 upset win over host Lawrence Academy. After a scoreless first period, Tabor opened things up with a pair of goals in the second, a shorthanded tally by Brian Swiniarski and an even-strength goal by Chris Zimmerman. Lawrence came back with two in the third, as Doug MacCormack scored, and Tony Voce followed with a powerplay goal.... Tyler Kolarik had a hat trick and Eric Thomassian had a goal and two assists to lead host Deerfield past Avon Old Farms, 5-2. Matt Hanson was strong in goal for the Green.... Jacob Jackson (2g), Jon Boyle (1g,1a), Mike Macklin (1g,1a), Conrad Barnes (2a) and Ed Caron (2a)  each had two-point games in Exeter's 6-3 road win at Northfield-Mt.Hermon. Alex Shaine and Vince Macri also scored for Exeter. NMH's goals were scored by Carl Michaelson, Brendan Roache, and Ryan Foster... Westminster sophomore goalie Phil Lauderdale came up big again, standing up to 30 Choate shots and kicking out 28 of them to lead his team to a 3-2 upset win. In the second period, dominated by Choate, Lauderdale stopped all 16 shots he faced. Earlier, Westminster had picked up a pair of first-period goals, one from Tim Joncas, and the other by Jeff Natale. Mark Szematowicz scored in the second to run Westminster's lead to 3-0. Wed. Feb. 9 Prep Highlights

A Tony Voce goal at 3:11 of overtime gave host Lawrence Academy a 4-3 win over Keller Division rival Thayer. The goal, a short backhander, was set up by defenseman Robbie Barker, who made a great play to keep the puck in the zone. Voce's goal not only capped off a fast and furious overtime period, but also a big Lawrence comeback. After Thayer went up, 3-2, on a Steve Greeley goal with 2:01 remaining in regulation, it looked like time would run out on Lawrence. But the Spartans pulled their goalie and, with five seconds remaining on the clock, Voce won a big face-off in the offensive zone, drawing the puck back to Greg Lauze at the point. Lauze walked in alone on Thayer goaltender Tim Kane, burying a shot in the upper left-hand corner to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into OT where Voce would win it. Voce, with a goal and three assists, figured in all four of Lawrence's goals. With the win, the Spartans clinched at least a tie for the Keller Division crown.... Hotchkiss, knocked off by Choate, 6-1, in its previous game, took a second straight hit, losing at Westminster, 3-1. After a Chris Swon goal put Hotchkiss up at 6:21 of the first, Westminster goaltender Phil Lauderdale barred the door the rest of the way as teammates Adam Swain, Mario Caouette and Jim Hakewill (an empty-netter) each scored a goal.... Kenny Roche had a goal and two assists as St. Sebastian's, playing at home, beat Belmont Hill, 4-1... Tyler Kolarik had two goals and an assist in Deerfield's 5-1 home win over Loomis-Chaffee.... Christian Jensen had two goals in Taft's 5-1 home win over Salisbury.... Mike O'Neill, Scott Trahan, and Tyler Wells each tallied in Avon's 3-2 home win over Gunnery.... A Jamie Carroll shorthanded goal at 7:50 of the second period gave Berkshire a 2-1 road win over the Kent School. Kent's goalie, Rick MacDonald, came up big in a losing effort, kicking out 41 of the 43 shots he faced.... A goal by Canterbury's Anthony Pace late in the second period proved to be the game-winner as Canterbury went on to top host Trinity-Pawling, 4-2... Michael Woodford had two goals, while Ryan Lannon and Steve Whitney added singletons as Cushing rolled on, topping Winchendon, 4-1.... Bill LeClerc and Adam Dann each scored two goals in St. Paul's 5-4 road win at Milton Academy. Milton's production came from Rob Flynn (2g,1a), Brendan Byrne (3a), and Josh Hennessey (2g)....  Craig MacDonald (2g,2a), Kevin Lyons (1g,3a), and Jake Clapton (1g,2a) led the attack in Noble's 8-4 win at Governor Dummer. For Pingree, Paul Knight had both goals.... For more, click on This Week's Scores above.

Sat. Feb. 5 Prep Highlights

At Cambridge, Mass. today, BB&N senior goaltender Rick Massey came up with one of the performances of the year in kicking out 40 shots -- many of them spectacular -- against Andover. However, he couldn't stop shot #41, which came with four seconds left in overtime. The winning goal came after BB&N had just killed off a 5-on-3 -- this in overtime, mind you -- and was down one man. Massey had his paddle down and was trying to get over to cover the right post when the puck slid tantalizing under the shaft of the stick just north of the blocker and tucked into the net. The goal came off the stick of Andover defenseman Mike Turner, with assists going to Steven Mead and Scott Darci. Senior Theo Novak posted the shutout for Andover, stopping seven shots.... Michael Woodford had a three-point afternoon (1g,2a) while his linemates, Ben Murphy and Brian Doherty each had a goal and an assist in Cushing's 6-3 win at Exeter. At Ashburnham, Mass., a 23-save shutout by Mike Boudreau helped give Cushing Academy a 7-0 win over the Capital District Selects. At the other end of the ice, Cushing's top line -- Brian Doherty (2g,2a), Ben Murphy (1g,2a), and Mike Woodford (3a) --  was too much for Cap District's D.... Northfield-Mt.Hermon got a pair of goals from Hunter Greeley in a 5-1 win at Kimball Union....A blast from the point by sophomore defenseman Michael Hutchins midway through the third period was the difference as host St. Paul's knocked off Governor Dummer Academy, 2-1. Earlier, Michael Zbriger had scored for GDA, and Anthony Maritato had scored for St. Paul's. Both goaltenders, youngsters Gabe Winer of GDA (40 saves) and Brad Shirley of St. Paul's (28 saves), had strong games.... Host Berkshire, behind a Ryan Brewer hat trick, topped Canterbury, 7-5. Sat. Jan. 29 Prep Highlights

In today's marquee matchup, #4-ranked Hotchkiss went on the road to meet #2-ranked Deerfield and, behind a pair of goals from junior defenseman Brandon Rogers, went home with a 2-2 tie. This was an excellent prep school game right from the start, as the two evenly-matched teams (Deerfield held bragging rights as a result of edging Hotchkiss, 3-2, in the Flood-Marr title game Dec. 19th.) came out hard and provided good up-and-down action. The first period belonged to the two goalies, Deerfield's Matt Hanson and Hotchkiss' Kyle McNulty. In the second, Rob Fried started the scoring at the 2:09 mark when he banged home the rebound of a Tyler Kolarik shot to put Deerfield up, 1-0. Late in the period, at 12:24, Rogers tied it up at 1-1 when he fired a bullet from the point that Hanson had no chance on. In the third period, Rogers, who stood out all afternoon, flipped a bouncer in on net that beat Hanson and gave Hotchkiss a 2-1 lead. Just when it looked like Hotchkiss would be able to avenge the Flood-Marr loss, Deerfield's Fried, stationed behind the net, found Kolarik in front for the tying goal with 1:34 left in regulation. Overtime solved nothing.... Sophomore Bryan Crabtree and junior Dan Skoglund each had two goals in Tabor's 5-3 win over Exeter. Seawolves senior goaltender Artie Imbriano kicked out 32 of 35 Exeter shots....

The Westminster line of Matt Kovacich, Rob Hammel, and R.C. Schmidt figured in three goals, and Phil Lauderdale kicked out 17 shots in posting his fifth shutout of the season in the Martlets' 4-0 win over Kent this afternoon..... Lawrence Academy scored four goals in the first period en route to a 6-2 win over St. Paul's. Tony Voce had two goals and an assist. Lawrence's defense once again figured prominently in the scoring -- Robbie Barker had a goal and three assists, Greg Lauze had a goal and an assist, and Stephen Wood had two assists. Kevin Brooks and Erik Kent tallied the other goals for the Spartans. Tim Graham and Kent-Erik Frees scored for St. Paul's. Lawrence outshot St. Paul's, 38-12..... #3-ranked Cushing topped
Salisbury 4-0 -- and outshot them 44-7. For Salisbury, junior goaltender David Sandals was very busy, kicking out 40 of 44 shots. Mike Woodford (2g,1a) and Ben Murphy (1g,2a) each had three-point games.... Ryan Shannon had a hat trick in #1-ranked Taft's easy 7-0 win over Trinity-Pawling.... Canterbury had a 5-1 lead over Pomfret early in the third, but allowed the visitors three straight third period goals to make it a one-goal game. That was as close as Pomfret got -- Canterbury skated off with a 5-4 win. Each Canterbury goal -- and each Pomfret goal, too -- was scored by a different scorer.... BU-bound center Steve Greeley had a pair of goals in Thayer's 3-3 road tie against St. Sebastian's.... Winchendon senior goaltender Greg Norcross had 22 saves in a 3-0 win shutout win over Berkshire. Chris LeBlanc, Shawn Sheehan, and Jay Rogato  each tallied for Winchendon, while Dan Bliss and Brian Boike each chipped in with a couple of assists....... Lawrence Academy got goals from six different scorers in a 6-1 home win over Gov. Dummer today. Tony Barrile (1g,3a) and Tony Voce (1g,2a) were the big producers for Lawrence. GDA goaltender Gabe Winer came up big in a losing effort, kicking out 42 of the 48 shots he faced.... A Jon Boyle powerplay goal with 3:42 left in regulation was the gamewinner as Exeter, on the road, topped Kimball Union, 4-2. Boyle (1g,2a) and Conrad Barnes (1g,2a) each had three-point games for Exeter. John Czaplinski had a strong game in net for KUA, kicking out 31 of the 35 shots he faced.... Mick Mounsey (2g,1a), Scott Horvath (2g,1a), Chris Higgins (1g,2a), Scott Trahan (2g), and Bill Magnuson (2a) led the scoring parade as Avon rolled over host Loomis-Chaffee by an 8-1 score... The Zamboni had a bad day at Westminster today, dying in its tracks. However, since Deerfield had traveled all that way and the players were all in uniform, the two coaches, Tom Earl and Jim Lindsay, agreed to play a 20-minute exhibition game, and reschedule the game for a date still to be determined. With poor ice, and nothing at stake, the exhibition was less than thrilling. For the record, Deerfield got goals from Andrew Miller and Tyler Kolarik to win, 2-0....And finally, in Mass, high school hockey tonight, another game that was less than thrilling -- Catholic Memorial 14, Malden Catholic 0. Jon Goodwin and Sean Pero each had four goals.... For more, click on This Week's Scores above.

Sat. Jan. 22 Prep Highlights

In the fourth annual Travis Roy Cup, held at Boston University's Walter Brown Arena this afternoon, St. Sebastian's and Tabor battled to a 1-1 tie. St. Sebastian's broke on top early when, at 4:48 of the first period, Seamus Young took a pass in the slot, faked out a Tabor defenseman and fired it past goaltender Artie Imbriano. Less than four minutes later, at the 8:11 mark, Tabor got it back when Brian Swiniarski intercepted a clearing pass by St. Sebastian's defenseman Sean Sullivan, broke in alone and fired a wrist shot past St. Sebastian's goaltender David Cacciola. After that, Imbriano and Cacciola put the clamps on. Early in the second period, St. Sebastian's Young almost got his second goal of the day when his point shot hit the crossbar. In the waning minutes of the third period, there was a serious flurry of up-and-down action. With 1:04 left in regulation, St. Seb's went on the powerplay and peppered Imbriano, but to no avail. Imbriano, who was named MVP, finished with 26 saves, while Cacciola had 25....Taft, with a number of players suffering with the flu, scored three goals in the third period to break open a 2-1 game. Canterbury got a couple of late goals, but still fell short by a 5-3 final in a physical, chippy game....Chris Owen and Craig MacDonald each had two goals and Kevin Lyons had a single goal in Nobles' 5-0 win at home against Andover. It was the first of five straight unanswered goals Cushing would score en route to a 7-2 win....Jon Boyle (2g,2a), Conrad Barnes (4a), and Colin Fitzrandolph (4a) each had four-point afternoons and Nick Vealitzek had two goals and an assist as Exeter rolled over Lawrenceville, 8-4. Kevin Richardson had a pair of goals for the Hoggers, the second of which game his team a 3-2 lead going into the third period. However, in the third, Nick Payeur, a sophomore from Berlin, NH, scored a powerplay goal to tie the game at 3-3. In overtime, NMH out shot Holderness 11-0, but couldn't solve Holderness freshman goaltender Matt Burzon. Wed. Jan. 19 Prep Highlights

After consecutive Wednesday losses to Holderness and Tabor, we were looking for Cushing to make a statement -- and they did just that. With junior Ben Murphy back centering the first line after missing ten games with mono, the Penguins skated and hit for three full periods and wound up taking a decisive 7-2 road win over Thayer today. Thayer was without Lou Eyster, who's been out since December (he'll be back Saturday) and top defenseman Ryan Whitney, who had to sit out after getting a game DQ in Saturday's loss to Lawrence Academy. Still, it probably wouldn't have made much difference: Cushing's depth was more than Thayer could handle. For Cushing, Josh Angevine had a pair of goals, both breakaways (one shorthanded) on the same shift; Brett Peterson had three assist; Mike Woodford had a goal and an assist; and Marv Degon had a pair of assists....Deerfield, playing at Kimball Union, trailed 2-1 in the second, but Rob Fried notched a powerplay goal, and Tyler Kolarik, with under two minutes remaining in the period, netted the game winner.... A Kevin Darcy goal at 3:05 of overtime lifted host Noble & Greenough to a 3-2 overtime win over St. Paul's. Nobles, behind goals from Drew McCourt and Ben McManama, led 2-0 after one, but SPS came back. In the second, Tim Graham scored on a nifty give-and-go with Colin Koch. In the third, Graham, from behind the goal line, set up the goal that sent the game into OT as he found defenseman Brennan Roach out front.....Tony Voce had a goal and two assists in Lawrence Academy's 6-0 blanking of BB&N...An unassisted goal by Northfield-Mt.Hermon forward David Andros with 1:03 left in regulation lifted the Hoggers into a 3-3 tie with Avon Old Farms. It was a beauty, too, as Voce came down the right side, went around the D, and cut in, faking Thayer goaltender Bill Petrucci by going left and then firing it into the top right corner....A third-period goal by Jeff Natale was the difference as Westminster took a 2-1 road win over Salisbury....Avon outshot Kent 60-9 in a 4-2 home win. Wed. Jan. 5 Prep Highlights

Holderness, unranked and new to Division I play this season, pulled off a major upset, defeating #1-ranked and previously unbeaten Cushing Academy. In the game, played at Holderness, Cushing trailed from the 2:10 mark of the first period, when a Jarrett Hann goal put Holderness up, 1-0. After a Chris White goal evened it for Cushing 44 seconds into the second, Holderness reeled off three straight power play goals -- by Bobby McCabe, Ryan Nolin, and Nick Payeur -- to go up, 4-1. And that, pretty much, was the story of the game. "They (Holderness) played an excellent game," said Cushing coach Steve Jacobs, "and we were flat. Hopefully, it's a wake-up call for us." Jacobs cited the Holderness power play, which was 4-for-7 overall -- and twice capitalized on 5-on-3 situations -- as key.  Holderness coach Pat Dennehy cited his team's penalty killing -- Holderness took 11 minors but didn't allow Cushing to score a powerplay goal -- as crucial. Dennehy also said that, while his team was outshot by a 31-17 margin, his defense did a good job keeping the shots on the perimeter. Freshman goaltender Matt Burzon, a native of Flower Mound, Texas, came up big for Holderness, stopping at least six tough chances when Cushing had a two-man advantage. Cushing's powerplay, already hurt by the absence of Ben Murphy, took a second hit when Kurt Wright took a spearing major late in the second....John Toffey, who's been on a roll for St. Sebastian's, added two more goals to pace the Arrows to a 4-1 win at Noble & Greenough tonight....A goal by Travis Tomczak midway through the third period gave Albany Academy a 2-1 victory over visiting Salisbury.....Mario Caouette had two goals and an assist to pace Westminster to a 4-1 win over the Connecticut Clippers. Sophomore goaltenders Phil Lauderdale and Craig Grenier were strong, combining on 25 saves, including a penalty shot save by Grenier in the third. Senior Tim Joncas had two assists....Brian McGuirk, J.J. Morrissey, and Peter Langella each scored and sophomore sensation Gabe Winer kicked out 51 shots as Governor Dummer topped Milton, 3-2....At Groton, Mass., defenseman Stephen Wood had a goal and two assists to pace Lawrence Academy to a 5-1 win over Pomfret.  Tony Voce returned to the Spartan lineup to tally a goal and an assist. Ryan Stevens and Tony Barrille each added a goal and an assist....St. Mary's, trailing 2-0 going into the third, got a pair of goals from freshman Mike Collette and a single tally from Billy Murray to top Millbrook, 3-2, on the road.... Cushing's Murphy Out 3-4 Weeks

Cushing junior forward Ben Murphy will be out 3-4 weeks with mono.

Last week, Murphy lost ten pounds with what, at the time, appeared to be a severe case of the flu. Nonetheless, he suited up for the Lawrence-Groton tournament, taking his regular shift between Brian Doherty and Michael Woodford on Cushing's top line. Between games on Friday, Murphy went to the hospital for bloodwork.  When the results came back, Murphy learned he had mono.

Among other games, Murphy will miss Cushing's annual tournament, which starts Tuesday.

St. Sebastian's Wins Mutch Cup

St. Sebastian's junior forward John Toffey , stationed at the edge of the crease to the left of Catholic Memorial goaltender Bill Zaniboni, tapped home the rebound of a Tony Coskren shot from the left point to give St. Sebastian's a 1-0 win over Catholic Memorial in the Mutch Cup, played tonight at Boston College's Conte Forum. The goal came just 19 seconds into the second period, and was a powerplay goal. Junior Dave Cacciola took care of the rest, registering the shutout. Zaniboni had a strong game for CM, who were outshot by St. Sebastian's 26-22. As the score indicates, the defensemen for both teams came through with strong games. Up front, St. Sebastian's freshman center Ken Roche had his best game yet as a member of the Arrows. St. Seb's breaks for Christmas with a 5-3  record.

Wed. Dec. 15 Prep Highlights

A Mike Mullins goal with 26 seconds remaining in overtime gave Governor Dummer a 4-3 upset win at St. Sebastian's this afternoon. For Mullins, a senior from Dollard Des Ormeaux, Que., the goal was his second of the day  Earlier, in the third period, Mullins had converted a pass from J.J. Morrissey which had tied  things up at 2-2. This was a crucial goal at the time, coming less than a minute after Noah Welch had given St. Sebastian's a lead on the kind of fluke goal (young goaltending prospect Gabe Winer fanned on a shot) that might have deflated past GDA teams  A little later, at the 7:20 mark, GDA went ahead 3-2 on a Michael Zbriger goal. Protecting leads, though, is something GDA is kind of new at and, just like Saturday at Milton, they gave up a game-tying goal in the final minute of play. This time it was St. Seb's RW Mike Morris converting a pass from John Sullivan with 28 seconds left. In overtime, St. Seb's goaltender Dave Cacciola stopped Ryan Shelly on a clean breakaway with 39 seconds remaining -- only to give up Mullins' game-winner less than 13 seconds later....It was a similar scene up in Exeter, NH, as Northfield-Mt Hermon, on the strength of a Jeff Martin goal, held a 4-3 lead as time wound down. But Exeter, on a  Vince Macri goal with 1:33 left, tied it up and sent the game into overtime. The hero? None other than erstwhile BFA-St. Alban's star Marty Paeplow, who gave NMH the win with at 4:07 of regulation....Scott Trahan, a PG out of Chelmsford (Mass.) HS, scored two goals in Avon Old Farms' 3-1 home win over Deerfield this afternoon. Scott Horvath also scored for Avon while Tyler Kolarik had Deerfield's lone goal....At Groton, Mass., Lawrence Academy shredded Milton Academy, 10-4, in a Keller Division matchup. Tony Voce led the way for the Spartans with a goal and four assists. Mark Pandolfo scored twice and Greg Lauze and Robbie Barker also added tallies. The Spartans exploded for five goal in five minutes in the second period to break open a 3-2 game....Choate's Dana Quinn, a PG from Madison, Wisconsin, had a five-point afternoon (4g,1 a) in Choate's 10-2 dismantling of Loomis-Chaffee. Defenseman Jeff Dwyer, who'll be going to Yale next fall, had five assists. Stephen Baldassarri and sophomore Curt Carter, a newcomer from Columbia, Md., each added two goals....For more, click on This Week's Scores above.

Sat. Dec. 11 Prep Highlights

Today's marquee matchup featured Cushing Academy soundly thumping defending prep champion Exeter in a game that was not as close as the final score of 5-3 suggests. Cushing, playing at home, came out flying, and broke on top at the 5:21 mark when Yale Lewis, on a great individual effort, beat two defenders before depositing the puck on the doorstep for Kurt Wright to tap past Exeter goaltender Mike Saraceni. From there, Cushing would score four of the next six goals to win it going away. Brian Doherty and Ben Murphy each had a goal and two assists. Michael Woodford had a goal and an assist. Defenseman Jack Celata also had a goal for the Penguins. For Exeter, Jon Boyle had two goals and Jay Gosselin one. As for Exeter's big guns, Conrad Barnes was limited to one assist, and Ed Caron was kept off the board totally. Cushing outshot the visitors by a 35-10 margin.... It took a Rob Flynn goal in the final minute of regulation and one in OT by Tom Colclough to give Milton a 5-4 come-from-behind win over visiting Governor Dummer. Flynn led Milton scorers with three points (2g,1a). Mike Pereira and Mark Angeloni also scored for Milton...Lawrence Academy, at home, drubbed Belmont Hill, 8-1. Tony Barrile led the attack with a hat trick. Tony Voce and Ryan Stevens each added two goals. Defenseman Greg Lauze tallied the other goal for the Spartans....In their home opener, Westminster got three first-period goals en route to a 5-2 win over Pomfret. Sophomore Adam Swain had a pair of goals.... In a 5-4 win at Holderness, NMH had goals from five different scorers....At Canterbury, a Scott Power goal at 2:29 of overtime gave the home team a 4-3 OT win over Loomis-Chaffee. Joe Bulmer had a goal and two assists for the winners. Loomis-Chaffee goaltender Ben Feller made 32 saves in a losing effort, while Brad Roberts had 17 for Canterbury....At the Walpole Tournament, the Boston Jr. Bruins, behind goals from Jaymie Harrington and Johan Danielsson, defeated Northwood, 2-1. Dan Carpenter scored Northwood's lone goal... A pair of sophomores -- defenseman Evan Shaw and forward Mike Morris -- each had a goal and two assists to lead St. Sebastian's to a 6-0 win at BB&N. Dave Cacciola and Kevin Reagan combined on the shutout.... An overtime goal by Tim Graham gave St. Paul's a 4-3 win in a scrimmage against Concord (NH) High School....A Jon Sinex goal 30 seconds into overtime gave Andover a 3-2 win over the Harvard JV tonight. Scott Darci and Justin Blanch scored for Andover in regulation. Andover outshot Harvard roughly 50-9 in the game....For more, click on This Week's Scores above.

Wed. Dec. 8 Prep Highlights

Ryan Shannon and Tim Pettit each notched a pair of goals in leading Taft to an impressive 5-1 road win over Avon Old Farms this afternoon. Taft, employing a swarming forecheck, used its team speed and quickness well, pushing Avon back on its heels and never allowing them to play the game they wanted. The offensive star  for Taft was Shannon, though linemates Pettit and Christian Jensen weren't far behind. On defense Ryan Sochacki played the best game we've ever seen him play. Also coming through for Taft were sophomore defensemen Jaime Sifers and big PG blueliner John McNicholas. And Mark Spadaccini was solid in goal...Harvard-bound senior Tyler Kolarik scored two goals to lead Deerfield to a 3-1 win at the home of Pioneer Valley rival Northfield Mt. Hermon.... Sophomore forward Mike Morris had four points (a hat trick and an assist) in St. Sebastian's decisive 6-1 win over St. Mark's....A goal by Hill's Kevin Dmochowsky with 22 seconds left gave his teammates a 5-4 win over Lawrenceville...Prep hockey's offensive star of the day award has to go to Exeter's Conrad Barnes, who had a six-point afternoon (3g,3a) in Exeter's 7-4 home win over Winchendon this afternoon. Right behind him was Eddie Caron, who had five points (2g,3a) in the tilt. PG center Jon Boyle came up big, too (1g,3a)... Hotchkiss, at home, topped Salisbury, 4-1. Adam Foote had the hat trick, while Brent Robinson had three assists and Brett Adamczyk had two. Chris Swon had the fourth tally, a tic-tac-toe goal with assists going to James Fitzpatrick and Andrew Helming. Kyle McNulty had a strong game in the nets, giving up just one goal, a short-handed breakaway by Jamie Giles....Catholic Memorial transfer Craig MacDonald had a pair of goals for Nobles and Ryan Foley had a pair for Tabor as the two teams battled to a 6-6 tie on the shore of Buzzards Bay...Holderness topped Kimball Union 2-1 with Jarrod Hann scoring both Holderness goals...Div. II South Kent, behind goals from Ben Bradley and Marc Allwang, knocked off Div. I Kent School....Canterbury got goals from Mike Carrano, Willie Bressete, and Joe Bulmer in its 3-2 win over Gunnery today. Canterbury goaltender Brad Roberts kicked out 25 of 27 shots for the win....For more, click on This Week's Scores above.

Sat. Dec. 4 Prep Highlights

RW Rob Fried scored all three Deerfield goals in a 3-2 home win over Holderness....A first-period goal by captain Mike Kennedy and a shutout effort by sophomore goaltender Phil Lauderdale was the story in Westminster's 1-0 win at Northfield-Mt. Hermon.... Hotchkiss broke out to an early 3-0 lead and rolled on to a 5-2 win at Canterbury. Jon Hill had a pair of goals and Kyle McNulty kicked out 25 shots....A Lou Eyster unassisted goal at 11:55 of the second period broke a 3-3 tie and Thayer went on to a 6-3 road win over a much-improved Gov. Dummer squad. Eyster, a dominant force all night, had three goals, the last an empty-netter. Scott Selig, with two goals, also came up big for Thayer....Milton senior Mark Angeloni had a pair of goals and Peter Cohen had 25 saves in Milton's 4-1 win at St. Sebastian's....Kevin Nee had three points (2g,1a) and Ryan Trowbridge had two goals in a 5-2 home win over Berkshire...A goal by Merritt Quirk in the second period lifted Loomis-Chaffee into a 2-2 tie at Trinity-Pawling....A goal by senior Matt Scanlan with 3:44 remaining in regulation gave Lawrenceville a 3-2 home win over Gunnery. Both goalies -- Matt Pane for Gunnery and sophomore Tim Roth for Lawrenceville -- had strong games....Derek Kilduff's second goal of the day, with 53 seconds remaining, lifted Tabor into a 3-3 road tie against Exeter. Conrad Barnes had a pair of goals for the defending Div. I prep champions.... For more, click on This Week's Scores above.

Wed. Dec. 1 Prep Highlights

Cushing's top line of Brian Doherty (1g,2a), Ben Murphy (1g,3a), and Michael Woodford (1g,3a) paced Cushing to an easy 6-1 road win over Tabor today. Nobles top guns in today's 6-3 win over Pomfret  -- they actually accounted for all six Nobles goals -- were Kevin Lyons (3g,1a), Chris Owen (1g,2a), and Ben McManama (2g,1a)...  In Concord, NH, an overtime goal by Kent Frees lifted St. Paul's to a 4-3 win. Tim Graham picked up two goals for St. Paul's...Senior Joe Bulmer had two goals and an assist to pace visiting Canterbury past Millbrook this afternoon...Exeter PG forward Jon Boyle scored a pair of goals to help Exeter squeeze out a 5-4 win over Holderness. Conrad Barnes had three assists for Exeter, while new junior Colin FitzRandolph added a goal and an assist...Goaltender Jeff Pietrasink recorded Berkshire's first shutout in three years in a 4-0 win at Albany Academy...Senior Mike Kreger, junior Justin Robertson, and Dana Quinn, a PG from Madison, Wisconsin, each scored a pair of goals in Choate's 8-0 drubbing of Springfield Cathedral....Sophomore LW J.J. Morrissey had four goals and an assist in Governor Dummer's 8-1 dismantling of Rivers...Ryan Kitson had a pair of goals and Jack Scanio, Chris Smart, Matt Schmidt, Aaron Lee and Sean Terry added single goals as Northwood topped the Middlebury JV, 7-4... Kimball Union got goals from Brian Chandler, Ben Delaney-Winn, Scott Wheeler, and John Levesque in its 4-1 win at Williston Northampton today.

Erratum: We wrote above that when Berkshire school goaltender Jeff Pietrasink shut out Albany Academy it was the first shutout recorded by a Berkshire goaltender in three years. Subsequent research (not done by us!) has now shown that it's the school's first in over seven years -- since 1992, a span of over 150 games.

KUA Star Injured

Kimball Union Academy, looking to rebound from a poor season last year, suffered a big blow when forward P.J. Davey, last season's top scorer, broke his leg while driving to the net in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Springfield Jr. Pics.

Davey is expected to be out for eight weeks.

Erratum: In the pre-season prep preview below, we referred to Choate defenseman Jeff Dwyer as Andrew Dwyer. Sorry about that. We also botched the name of last year's Westminster goalie. It's Rob Miller. He's graduated and is playing in the USHL for Dubuque. The corrections have been made below.

USHR Pre-Season Rankings:
Cushing the Team to Beat

The US Hockey Report pre-season prep rankings, released Sunday night, show Cushing Academy, which won New England prep titles in '96 and '98, as the favorite to take their third title in five years.

In last year's prep tournament, Exeter beat Deerfield, 3-2 in OT, to win the championship. Lawrence Academy and Choate bowed out in the semis. Hotchkiss, Avon, Cushing, and Nobles were all defeated in the quarterfinals.

#1 CUSHING ACADEMY

A team without weaknesses. Start in net -- there's no goalie in prep hockey steadier or more experienced than senior Ryan MacNeil.  In front of him is prep hockey's deepest group of D-men -- seniors Brett Peterson and Jack Celata, junior Blake Pickett, and sophs Phil Youngclaus and Marvin Degon. As if that's not enough, Steve Jacobs was able to add Ryan Lannon, who played for the U.S. National Team Development Program last season,  to anchor the whole group. Any team that gets two goals a game vs.Cushing will have something to feel good about.

Up front, the Penguins are very good,  though no better than Deerfield, Hotchkiss, or Exeter. Seniors Brian Doherty and Kurt Wright, and juniors Yale Lewis, Michael Woodford, and Ben Murphy will lead the way. Look for junior Tony Mallozzi to play a bigger role, while Jamie Solon, from Acton-Boxboro HS will fill the void at center left by the graduation of Brian Teixeira.  Incoming freshman Kevin Coughlin of South Boston and the South Shore Kings, has size, strength, and skill -- he's the best freshman forward Jacobs has brought in since John Sabo three years ago.

#2 EXETER

Repeating is tough, but, on paper, Exeter isn't in that much of a different situation than a year ago. Nobody knew then what PG goaltender J.D. Hadiaris would be able to do. It's the same this year, nobody knows what the two leading candidates in net -- big  Dustin Gauthier or quick, smaller Mike Saraceni -- can do. If one or both can come through, however, Exeter will be tough again.

Up front, Exeter boasts top prospect Eddie Caron, a junior, and one of the truly elite Div. I and pro prospects in prep hockey. Behind him is Conrad Barnes, who'll be watched closely by Division I recruiters in the early going.  . Lost to graduation is Josh Prudden, but his production can be picked up by PG Jon Boyle, who played at Holderness last year and was ticketed to Holy Cross before he wound up signing on for a PG year at Exeter. Boyle will be a huge help. Exeter also lost small forward Mike Engert, but there are several players who might be able to fill that role, most notably Jacob Jackson, a PG from the Washington Little Caps. Top newcomer to the squad is Colin Fitzrandolph, a big, rangy forward from Canton, NY. Fitzrandolph could score twenty in his first year playing prep hockey.

On D, Greg Boucher is gone, so Vince Macri, another DI prospect, will step up and take a bigger role.

#3 DEERFIELD

Up front, they'll be strong if only because they have the Harvard-bound duo of Tyler Kolarik and Rob Fried. One is the most dynamic player in prep hockey; the other is the biggest and strongest. Deerfield will have no problem filling in around them. Senior Chip Canner will take a  bigger role. His younger brother, James, a sophomore, will step into the picture, too.

Defense might be another story. The key guy, Trevor Byrne is gone, and, so, too, is Aaron Kim, who could play both forward or D. There's nobody on hand who can fill their boots -- at least immediately. Seniors Oriel McHugh and Guy Smith will have to step up to the challenge of leading a group that may include several youngsters. One, freshman Ben Lovejoy, a Cardigan Mountain D, was a standout at the U.S. Select 15 Festival this past summer.

In goal will be Matt Hanson, who has transferred from St. Paul's and Billy Moss, a PG from North Reading HS (Mass.).

#4 LAWRENCE ACADEMY

They have a strong senior goaltender in Bo Christini.  And they have three proven D in seniors Steven Wood, Greg Lauze, and Robbie Barker. The question, then, is who'll be able to fill the remaining D spots? David Norton, who played for the Mass. entry at the Select 15 Festival, should be good for one slot. But after that? Only Lawrence's stentorian head coach Charlie Corey knows.

Up front, it's a similar situation. BC-bound Tony Voce will be the go-to guy. Junior Erik Kent will complement him, but after that there's a significant drop off in proven finishers. This team will rely a lot on Christini, who can steal games, and Voce, who can win them singlehandedly. Div. I college recutiers will be watching Christini, Wood, and Barker closely.

#5  AVON OLD FARMS

Avon could be better than last year, which wasn't too shabby (they were the fourth seed in the west, remember). John Gardner has enough guys to put together two very solid lines. Highly-skilled junior center Chris Higgins, PG Scott Trahan (Chelmsford HS), senior Scott Horvath,  PG forward Mike Warner (Arlington Catholic HS) will be the go-to guys.

On defense UNH bound Mick Mounsey leads the way, and he has a big, stay-at-home D to complement him in Merrimack recruit Eric Pedersen, a PG out of Saugus HS. Corey Salvatelli is solid, too.

In net, Avon has lost Todd Marr to graduation (he's at Northeastern). Hoping a sophomore can do a senior's job is a leap of faith, but if Tim Warner can play as he did last summer at the US Select 16 Festival -- he was named the top goaltender and, basically, led Mass. to a silver medal -- Avon will be in good shape not only this year but for the next three years.

#6  HOTCHKISS

Teams without clear-cut stars rarely win titles. And that, in the post-Nowak era, is what Hotchkiss will be facing. They'll look for the big man and he'll be in ...Cambridge, Mass.

That said, Hotchkiss does have good depth, and that can get you at least to the doorstep. Up front, Damon White can throw two strong, balanced, veteran lines out there. Seniors Martin Brisebois, Brent Robinson, James Fitzpatrick, Adam Foote, Andrew Helming, and Brett Adamzyck, and junior Chris Swon will be expected to put the numbers on the board. Nick Carroll is transferring in from Kimball Union and will help out, too. A youngster looking to make a mark will be big Sam Bowles, a freshman from the Washington Jr.Caps.

On defense, Hotchkiss lost both Jesse Minneman (USHL) and Jay Goebel, (Colby) which is a lot. Junior Brandon Rogers will attempt to fill the void. He'll be helped by big Ryan Wilson, who could emerge in his senior year. Others who'll be counted on include Brian Phinney and Andy Laskowski.  They'll be pushed by true freshman Mike Gershon, formerly with the N.J. Jersey Jr. Devils.

Hotchkiss is all set in goal with junior Kyle McNulty and senior Eric Smith.

#7 CHOATE

Lost a lot up front in Sam Paolini (Cornell), Craig Wadman (Williams), et al, but the strength of this team will be on the blue line, with seniors Cameron DeYoung and Jeff Dwyer anchoring things. Senior Mike Velez, and junior Chris DeStefano are right behind them, while new junior J.R. Bria, who's coming from Notre Dame-Fairfield HS, could help out, too.

Up front, juniors Chris Snizek and Steve Baldassari will lead the way. New comer John Dawson, a senior from New Canaan HS, could provide firepower.

With Dan Weinrieb (UMass-Lowell) graduated, Chris Schod  takes over in net. Schod looked good at the U.S. Select 16 Festival, playing for New England.

#8 THAYER

Started out strongly last season, but faded. This year, they could squeeze into the Elite 8. Depth is seldom a problem at Thayer, so they're usually in the hunt. Steve Greeley, now in his sixth (!!) season of Keller Division play, might be gunning for a chance to make some noise in the postseason. Northeastern recruit Scott Selig really came on last season. Lou Eyster is capable of having big games. And junior Steve Kelleher can score, too. .

The defense is young, but they have the estimable Ryan Whitney, a junior who's the top defenseman in prep hockey.

In goal, Mikel Beacham is gone (Omaha Lancers) so junior Bill Petrucci gets his shot.

#9 NORTHFIELD MT-HERMON

Paul Kelly is off to BC, but with a dozen or so newcomers, NMH has more depth than they've had in a while. First off, they have some solid returning forwards in seniors David Andros, Jeff Martin, and junior Csaba Dekaney. Add in PG forwards like Marty Paepelow ( BFA St Albans) and Brendan Clark  ( Reading HS); juniors Erik Roos ( Notre Dame- Fairfield) and Sammy Vatrano;  ( Springfield Cathedral); and sophomore Brian Bova, ( St Johns Prep) and suddenly NMH could make some noise -- if the defense and goaltending is halfway decent.

#10 WESTMINSTER:

Like NMH, Westminster has a boatload of new players. And, we've seen a lot of them at their previous teams, too, so we know Tom Earl's '99-00 edition will be much improved over last year. New junior Jim Hakewill, a big defenseman from the Team Illinois Midgets, heads the list. Up front, three juniors from the Milwaukee Pettit Selects Midget AAA squad -- Matt Kovacich, Jay Waclawski, and Gharrity Mc Nett -- will help. The top returnees -- Tim Joncas, Rob Hammel, and Mike Kennedy -- are forwards, and seniors, too.

As with NMH, the defense and goaltending -- Rob Miller has graduated to the USHL (Dubuque) -- is the big question mark.

** Bubbling Under the Top 10 **

#11 ST. SEBASTIAN'S: A very good team that made a real run for it last year. They might this year, too, but they're young. In 2000-01, they'll be a senior-led team and will make noise.

#12 TAFT:  They couldn't get into the the playoffs last year -- and that's with a roster boasting half a dozen players now playing DI. Those guys are gone, and it'll just get harder. However, as always, there's a ton of talent on this team. However, like St. Seb's above, it's young talent.

#13 TABOR:  A lot of their key players are back. Goaltender Artie Imbriano is very good. Ryan Foley, Paul Muniz, Tony O'Shaughnessy, Bryan Crabtree, and Thayer transfer Derek Kilduff will help up front. On defense Jeff Lang and Bob DeLong will be abetted by newcomer Chuck Tomes from Brooks. Could be a dark horse team.

#14 NOBLES:  A lot of good players remain, but losing John Cronin, Justin Dziama, Mike Murray, and Wally Siggins takes a huge bite out of the attack.

#15 MILTON: They have a handful of good players, but there's a real lack of depth. It'll hold them back, too.

#16: WINCHENDON: Don't really have a feel for how this PG-laden team will actually look when they hit the ice. However, the age factor will allow them to contend for a spot in the Division I tourney.
