Compuware Tournament Results: Thurs. October 8

Plymouth, Mich. -- There were three games tonight at the Compuware Tournament. ///  Host Compuware came from behind to edge Cleveland, 3-2. Troy Milam had a goal and two assists. /// Mike Matich got the shutout and Rob Yamashita had a pair of goals in as the Grand Rapids Bearcats 4-0 win over the US Under-17 Team. /// Chuck Fabry scored a pair of goals in the Soo Indians 3-1 win over the Chicago Freeze.

The remaining 18 teams swing into action tomorrow (Fri. 10/9). The Soo and Chicago will have the day off.

Plymouth, Mich. -- There were 11 games today at the Compuware Tournament: The Shelburne Wolves defeated the Burlington Cougars, 6-4. /// The St. Louis Sting defeated the Walpole Jr. Stars, 5-2. Pelle Fernhall had three points (2g,1a). /// Jason Barela and Colin Shields each had two goals as the Cleveland Barons defeated the Vaughn Vipers, 7-3. /// The Danville Wings and the Niagara Scenic finished in a 4-4 tie. Jason Kuczmanski had a pair for Niagara. /// The U.S. Under-17 Team and the Wexford Raiders finished in a 1-1 tie. Sean Burkart scored for Wexford, and David Steckel for the U.S. Rob Bonk kicked out 25 shots in the U.S. net; Jamie Bruno 27 for the Raiders. /// The Springfield Blues shut out the Huntsville Wildcats, 6-0. Brian Rogers only had to make 11 saves for the shutout. /// The Grand Rapids Bearcats thumped the Bridgewater Bandits, 9-1. Derek Cunha had a rought time in the Bandits net, allowing five goals and making three saves before being pulled after eight minutes. /// Compuware beat Parry Sound, 5-1, with J.J. Swistak scoring a pair.  /// Zdenek Horak had two goals as the Boston Jr. Bruins defeated Oakville, 4-3. /// The Leamington Flyers defeated the Auburn Jr. Crunch, 4-3. /// The Bismark Bobcats of the AFHL beat the Boston Bulldogs, 4-1.

Plymouth, Mich. --- There were eleven games today at the Compuware Tournament: Oakville topped Niagara, 4-2. /// The Vaughn Vipers beat Parry Sound, 5-3. /// Chris Maniatis had a hat trick as the Boston Bulldogs topped Huntsville, 6-1. /// Bridgewater Bandits goaltender Derek Cunha bounced back from a rough game the previous night, and Scott Cooper beat 15-year-old Wexford Raiders goaltender Andy Chiodo twice in 2-2 tie. ///  A hat trick by Chris Gobert and three-point nights from both Jonathan Billy and defenseman Mike Bozoian led the Soo Indians to a 6-1 win over Shelburne. The Soo outshot the Wolves, 50-15. /// Chris Knapp had three points (2g,1a) in leading the Chicago Freeze to a 5-4 win over the Burlington Cougars. /// Freddie Bentz scored two goals in a 3-1 Bismark Bobcats win over the Springfield Jr. Blues. /// Jim Abbott (2g,1a) and Pelle Fernhall (1g,2a) each had three-point games, and David Brito, Aaron Smith, and Chris Sturk chipped in with two points apiece as the St. Louis Sting rolled over the Leamington Flyers, 6-1. /// Derek Edwardson and Ambrose Tappe each had two goals as the Danville Wings walloped the Boston Jr. Bruins, 9-1. Plymouth, Mich. --- All 24 teams were in action today as the round-robin portion of the Compuware Tournament was completed. (Except for the four teams that advance to the semifinals Monday morning, the won-lost-tied records indicated below are final.) ///  A hat trick by Frank Werner led the Springfield Jr. Blues (2-1-0) to a 5-2 win over the Boston Bulldogs (1-2-0). /// In a penalty-filled game, the Bismark Bobcats (3-0-0) took a 7-0 decision from the Huntsville Wildcats (0-3-0). Jeremy High had 20 saves for the shutout. /// Aaron Smith and Eric Ortlip each had a goal and an assist as the St. Louis Sting (3-0-0) rolled to a 5-1 win over the Auburn Jr. Crunch (1-2-0). /// Derek Edwardson and Ryan Tormey each had two goals as the Danville Wings (2-0-1) pinned an 8-2 loss on the Oakville Blades (1-2-0). /// The Boston Jr. Bruins and the Niagara Scenic battled to a 7-7 tie. Anders Gullberg had a hat trick for the Jr. Bruins (1-1-1). Jason Kuczmanski and Aaron Wallace each had two goals for Niagara (0-1-2). /// Compuware (3-0-0) laid a 10-0 whipping on the Vaughn Vipers (1-2-0). Ryan Fultz had three goals for the Barons; Nick Snyder, a defenseman, had two; and Ryan Jardine one. ///  A third-period goal by defenseman David Hughes lifted the Chicago Freeze (1-1-1) into a 4-4 tie with the Shelburne Wolves (1-1-1).  Earlier, Andrew Radzak, Paul Glynn, and George Parros had scored for Chicago. /// Goaltender Jamie Bruno of the Wexford Raiders (1-0-2) shut out the Grand Rapids Bearcats (2-1-0) by a 2-0 score. /// Mike Mantenuto had two goals and an assist to lead the Walpole Jr. Stars (1-2-0) to a 5-1 win over the Leamington Flyers (1-2-0). Marius Andersen, Paul Falco, and Brian Geever also scored for Walpole. /// Jonathan Billy (2g), Nick Glander (1g,1a), and Chris Gobert (2a) each had two-point nights as the Soo Indians (3-0-0) coasted to a 5-1 win over the Burlington Cougars (0-3-0). /// Center R.J. Umberger had the hat trick (and also added an assist) as the U.S. Under-17 Team (1-1-1) topped the Bridgewater Bandits (0-2-1) by a 6-3 score tonight. Brett Lebda, Matt Junkins, and Joey Hope also scored for the U.S, while Brady Leisenring and Arthur Femenella each had two assists. For Bridgewater, Scott Cooper had a goal and an assist. /// Notes: It's an all-USA playoff with #1 Compuware meeting #4 Soo, and  #2 Bismark facing off against #3 St. Louis. Both games are at 9 a.m, with the finals scheduled for 5:30 pm. For the record, U.S.-based teams at the tournament finished with a combined 14-3-3 record vs. the eight Ontario teams.

Compuware Tournament Results:  Mon. October 12

St. Louis Sting, Compuware Advance to Championship Game

Plymouth, Mich.-- In semi-final results from the Compuware Tournament, #1 Compuware smoked Michigan State-bound goaltender Ryan Miller and the #4 ranked Soo Indians by a 6-0 score this morning. Jack Redwood led the way for the Ambassadors with two goals and an assist. Pat Brush also had two goals, while Steve Jackson had a goal and an assist.

In the other game, #2 St. Louis rolled over #3 Bismark, 6-1. Jim Abbott had two goals for the Sting, while John Gilbert had one goal and an assist. Pelle Fernhall had three assists.

Bismark and the Soo -- the two semi-final losers -- both finish the tournament with a 3-1-0 record, while Compuware and St. Louis, both 4-0-0, meet in tonight's title game.

Sting, Fernhall, Knock off Host Compuware in Title Game

Plymouth, Mich. -- A goal and two assists from forward John Gilbert helped lead the St. Louis Sting to the championship of the Compuware Tournament with a 5-1 win over the host Compuware Ambassadors tonight. Travis Wood, Jim Abbott, Pelle Fernhall, and Luke Lestikow also scored for the Sting; and Dominic Blouin had 24 saves. John Shouneyia scored Compuware's lone goal.

Sting forward Pelle Fernhall was named tournament MVP. A 6'1", 185 lb. native of Gothenburg, Sweden, Fernhall is a second-year player in the North American Hockey League. Fernhall topped all scorers at the tournament with a 5-6-11 line. Others among the top 10 scorers in the tournament were Jim Abbott, John Gilbert, Eric Ortlip, and Aaron Smith (St. Louis);  Steve Jackson, Jack Redwood, and John Shouneyia (Compuware); Derek Edwardson (Danville); and Anders Gullberg (Jr. Bruins). All of the above players appeared in five games, except Edwardson and Gullberg, each of whom played three.
