Here is the USHR Scouting Report on Kompon written last October (10/98):
Mike Kompon 82 LC 5'9 165 Stratford Jr.B
Kompon played last year ('97-98) for Thunder Bay bantam. He is a small centre and a very
good skater with speed and quickness. He uses these traits to be an effective checker who
forces the play and will finish checks. Because of his size, he will never be a big
hitter, but he's willing to throw his weight around. He backchecks consistently and shows
a good work ethic.
Offensively, Kompon is very gifted. He has nine points in seven games so far. He exhibits
incredible poise and patience with the puck. He never panics or throws it away. He skates
with his head up and he has confidence that he can buy time to make a play, especially in
traffic. He likes to carry the puck up ice, and he can turn a defenceman inside-out while
skating at half speed. He can protect the puck by carrying it with one hand on the stick,
and he can elude checks by using his quick hands and feet. He is always around the puck.
He will go into corners and take a hit to make a play. He can take it to the net. He has a
great passing touch -- crisp and accurate -- and he sees the ice well.
Kompon will be an excellent player no matter where he goes. He is a solid third rounder
who
could go even higher.
