Rank | Record | The Skinny | |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Deerfield | 16-4-0 |
(6) GPG/GAA 4.05/2.21 – Deerfield needed a spark after back-to-back losses to KUA and Salisbury last month. And they got it, going 10-1-0 since. A primary contributor to the Big Green’s success has been junior goaltender Elliot Lennon, who blanked Avon on Saturday and hasn’t allowed more than two goals in any of his last 10 games, sporting a stingy 1.50 GAA in the process. THIS WEEK: @ Taft (Wed.)
|
2 | Dexter | 18-2-1 |
(2) GPG/GAA 5.19/2.17 – Despite the hiccup yesterday, a 2-2 tie against a much improved P-Abbey, Dexter rolls on. Will they be able to hang onto their current #1 seed? Dexter's remaining schedule doesn’t look overly taxing; they end the season against Holderness, which will likely need the victory more than Dexter. Junior BU commit, Rian Chudzinski, senior Sean Leetch, and soph Noah Survilas have been on a tear lately, collectively
scoring 23 goals over their last 11 games. THIS WEEK: @ St. Pauls (Wed.), @ Winchendon (Fri.)
|
3 | St. Mark's | 18-3-2 |
(3) GPG/GAA 4.04/1.72 – St. Mark’s continues its season-long run of steady play, spearheaded by the two-headed goaltending hydra that is Justin Brisebois (1.71 gaa/.940 sv%) and Cassidy Kittridge (1.75/.919). 'Defense wins championships,' as wisdom has it, and the Lions have allowed merely 41 goals this season, the fewest in prep hockey. After a loss to Cushing on Friday -- and a 3-2 win at Middlesex on Saturday, a big home game Wednesday vs. Rivers and its band of merry freshmen looms. THIS WEEK: vs. Rivers (Wed.), @ Berwick (Fri.), vs. LA (Sat.)
|
4 | Noble & Greenough | 15-6-1 |
(8) GPG/GAA 4.36/2.68 – With six wins over Top 16 teams, the Bulldogs have the talent. After a mediocre Flood-Marr, the Bulldogs have been a tough out. Aside from freshman Justin Lee’s blanking of Gov’s on Wednesday, it's been offense in the driver's seat. And junior Billy McAusland (22-27-49, 2.23 ppg) and senior Yale commit Kyle O’Leary (21-26-47, 2.14 ppg) have been riding in the lead car. Up ahead are crucial games against TUCs Bel Hill and Gov’s. THIS WEEK: @ BB&N (Wed.), @ Bel Hill (Fri.)
|
5 | Brunswick | 17-4-2 |
(5) GPG/GAA 4.43/2.43 – Up until a humbling home sweep to Dexter Jan. 10-11, Brunswick appeared unstoppable. Since then, they've dusted themselves off and have had only one NEPSIHA loss, a 5-0 blanking at the hands of Cushing last Wednesday. Offsetting that, however, was Monday's 3-2 win over Berkshire. The Bruins are currently well positioned for a spot in the Elite 8, and a win at Salisbury Wednesday could give them a chance at home ice in the quarters. We'll see. Harvard commit junior Joe Salandra (32-29-61, 2.03 ppg), and classmate Mason St. Louis (19-29-48, 1.71 ppg), a Dartmouth commit, continue to torch opponents. THIS WEEK: @ Salisbury (Wed.), vs. Gunn (Sat.)
|
6 | Salisbury | 16-6-3 |
(7) GPG/GAA 3.60/2.22 – Shortly after the New Year, Salisbury was 4-2-2 and was, by its lofty standards, not getting the job done. Out of the Elite 8 picture then, the Crimson Knights are solidly in it now. What changed? Wins, lots of wins. Since Jan. 3 they’ve gone 12-2-1 with crucial victories over fellow Elite 8 contenders Deerfield and Cushing. Monday’s OT loss to Westy, however, raises the stakes for Wednesday's game against Brunswick. The Crimson Knights have had a scoring surge since December, with 68 goals in the last 14 games, a 4.86 team GPG. Seniors Connor Davis, Ryan Hedley, Oliver Morris, and Jake Novak account for 57 of Salisbury's 92 goals. THIS WEEK: @ Westminster (Mon.),
@ Brunswick (Wed.)
|
7 | Belmont Hill | 17-4-2 |
(N/R) GPG/GAA 4.19/1.63 – Bel Hill, despite a relatively poor performance against Top 16 teams (3-4-2) finds itself slotting into the #6 spot in JSPR points. The reason? A strong RPI is helping them win comparison metrics over some of the teams they’ve lost to. An important tilt looms, however, as the Sextants face Nobles Friday. A win there should be enough to punch their ticket to the show. As with St. Mark’s, Bel Hill relies heavily on team defense. Goaltenders JJ Thibodeau, a junior, and senior Keagin Wilson lead the prep hockey ranks with a miserly 1.63 GAA. THIS WEEK: @ Milton (Wed.), vs. Nobles (Fri.)
|
8 | Cushing | 16-7-2 |
(N/R) GPG/GAA 4.12/2.43 – Over the past month, the Penguins have reeled off several clutch wins, most notably over KUA, Brunswick, and St. Mark’s. With a winning record (5-4-1) against Elite 8 contenders and trending in the right direction. And they’re not
done yet, as TUCs Andover, KUA, and Gov’s are stones in their pathway. Coach Ryan Bourque leans heavily on senior Max Dineen (20-27-47, 1.88 ppg), and sophomore Joseph Covelluzzi (18-13-31, 1.24) to drive the offense.
Senior G Zach White allowed just a single goal in huge wins this past week over Brunswick, 5-0, and St.
Mark’s, 3-1. THIS WEEK: vs. Andover (Wed.), vs. KUA (Sat.)
|
9 | Holderness | 17-4-1 |
(9) GPG/GAA 5.50/2.04 – Holderness turned the tables on KUA last weekend, avenging a Feb. 7th defeat, and in so doing, improving its chances of earning a spot in the Elite 8. However, Dexter, and, as is usually the case every season, KUA in the Lakes Region playoffs loom large. The Bulls will likely need a W in one or both of these games to muscle their way into the Elite 8. As we all know, Holderness's point-getters are legion, with senior d-man Jeremy Poirier (8g, 24a, 1.45 ppg) setting up for the attack. No other team in prep hockey matches
the 5.50 GPG offensive onslaught the Bulls bring. Their top lines -- primarily seniors or PGs -- are battle-tested as well. The Bulls have fared well against the Top 16, going 3-2-1 with only one game against a TUC remaining (Dexter, Wed. Feb. 26) before the Lakes Region Tournament. THIS WEEK: @ Winchendon (Wed.), vs. Vermont Academy (Fri.)
|
10 | Rivers | 17-5-1 |
(N/R) GPG/GAA 5.39/2.62 – The Red Wings have been flying high in the second half, winners of nine straight since a tight 4-3 loss to Eberhart rival St. Mark’s on Jan. 18. Since then they’ve downed Nobles and Bel Hill, big wins in their chase for a spot in the Elite 8. Three of their top five scorers are freshmen. Carter Meyer (35g, 25a, 2.61 ppg) is prep hockey's leading goal scorer, and Finn Sears (21g, 26a, 2.04 ppg) and Sam Pandolfo (8g, 22a, 1.30 ppg) are no slouches either. Elder statesmen Justin Graf (12g, 36a, 2.09 ppg), a junior committed to Merrimack, is prep hockey's assists leader. Senior Will Hatten (18g, 16, 1.48 ppg) has also been strong. Rivers has a make-or-break game at St. Mark’s Wednesday -- a win there could get them over the hump and propel them into the Elite 8 by season’s end. THIS WEEK: @ St. Mark’s (Wed.)
