MLK Day Melee Correction
Avon Old Farms Head Coach John Gardner reports that he has studied game tapes from last Monday’s Avon-Westminster game and that Westy senior forward Sean Orlando was not the player who accidentally hit Avon Old Farms assistant Bill Maniscalco in the dustup that occurred as time expired.
“It was not Sean Orlando,” Gardner said.
We asked Gardner who it was.
“We could not determine from the film exactly who was involved and, really, at this point we wouldn’t say even if we did know. It was accidental anyway. It’s in the past. But we don’t want him (Orlando) hurt by this.”
Gardner said he expects Wednesday’s game to go smoothly, with no repercussions.

Sat. Jan. 26 Highlights
@ Andover 2, Loomis 1 (OT) – PG Conal Lynch took a short pass from senior D Connor Light at the offensive blue line and let one rip from the right faceoff circle, beating Loomis senior goaltender Danny Tirone to the short side. This was a tremendous game to watch, as both goalies were strong, with Tirone and Andover soph Eric Wurman being forced to come up with big stops. Tirone, whose glove hand is his right hand, faced the lion’s share of the shots, especially early. The Conn. native, ex of Shattuck U16s, may not be big, but he’s a very strong Div. I prospect. He certainly gives his team a legit chance every time out. Both teams had glittering opportunities in a scoreless third period and a bunch more in OT – at least until Lynch’s big goal. Andover improves to 6-8-2, while Loomis falls to 10-7-1.
@ Berkshire 4, Salisbury 3 – After #7 Salisbury came back from a 3-1 first period deficit to tie the game at 3-3, Berkshire junior forward Craig Puffer came up with the game-winner for the #3-ranked Bears with just 1:20 remaining in regulation. Also coming up big again for Berkshire was junior forward Tipper Higgins, who notched two goals. Salisbury outshot Berkshire, 44-24, but Bears senior goalie Tim Ernst, ex of Salisbury, kicked out 41shots for the win. Berkshire’s unbeaten streak is now at 16.
@ Belmont Hill 8, Cushing 2 (OT) -- Seniors Carl Hesler (2g,1a), EJ Rauseo (1g,2a), and Mike Najjar (3a), as well as junior Matt Melanson (1g,2a) each had three points as #4-ranked Belmont Hill dismantled #6 Cushing 8-2. These are two teams headed in opposite directions. Belmont Hill has won five in a row; Cushing has now lost three in a row.
@ Canterbury 2, Pomfret 1 – Senior forward Jeff Celniker’s goal with 3:12 to play lifted host Canterbury to a 2-1 win over Pomfret. Canterbury, now 9-7-3, outshot Pomfret, 41-18, but senior goalie Alex Joyce came up big in a losing cause, stopping 39.
@ Kent 5, Westminster 4 (OT) – Tied 3-3 going into the third, Kent junior forward Lewis Zerter-Gossage (1g,1a) put #9-ranked Kent back up by one with under eight minutes to go. But with the clock ticking down to 10 seconds and the goalie pulled, Westminster PG forward Ethan Holdaway slipped home the tying goal. Westy’s late comeback was for naught, however, as Kent sophomore forward Max Kaufman (1g,1a) lifted the Lions to victory at the 2:54 mark of OT. Kent outshot Westminster 39-21. Kent is unbeaten in their last seven (6-0-1). #5-ranked Westminster has had a tough go of it, having gone four games (0-3-1) without a win.
Governor’s 3 @ Brooks 2 – Senior forward James Murphy’s second goal of the day, a power play tally with 3:23 left, lifted Gov’s (8-8-3) to the .500 mark. Of the five goals in the game, four came on the powerplay and one was a shortie. Brooks outshot the Governors 33-18, but senior goaltender Brendan McMenimen came up with 31 saves to earn the win.
@ Choate 4, Avon Old Farms 1 – After going into the third tied at 1-1, Choate reeled off three unanswered goals to knock off #10 Avon. Mickey Foley (1g,2a) had a three-point day for the Wild Boars. And sophomore goaltender Sam Tucker came up big, kicking out 38 shots to earn the win.

BB&N 8 @ St. George’s 5 – In a back-and-forth game, BB&N junior forwards Cam O’Neill (4g) and Bobby Mullins (1g,2a) led the Knights' attack. Senior forwards Hunter Johnson (2g,1a) and Gino Roy (1g,2a) had big days for St. George’s.
Middlesex 6 @ Rivers 4 – Rivers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Middlesex came back to tie it at 3-3, and again at 4-4 before junior forward Ben Franks (1g,2a) scored the game-winner with 3:14 to play. Sophomore forward Eric Shaw (2g,2a) also had a big game for Middlesex, now 9-5-2. Rivers falls to 12-6-2.

@ Avon 4, Loomis 3 – Loomis, playing on the road, had leads of 2-1 and 3-2, but #10-ranked Avon got a third period goal from soph Chase Ziesky to tie it up and then, with 10 seconds left in regulation and Avon on the PP, senior Mason Kreuger netted the game-winner. @ Trinity-Pawling 4, Choate 3 – The Wild Boars held a 3-1 lead midway through the second period, but blew it, allowing host T-P to come back with three unanswered goals. @ St. Sebastian’s 7, St. Paul’s 3 – The Arrows, now 9-4-1, employed a balanced attack as seven different scorers came through. St. Seb’s sophomore goalie Danny Higgins stopped 44 of 47 shots for the win. The Arrows were outshot 47-36.

Wed. Jan. 9 Highlights
@ Belmont Hill 3, Thayer 1 – A Will Golonka breakaway goal with 37 seconds left in the second period allowed host Belmont Hill to take a 2-1 lead and spelled the difference as the #2-ranked Hillies edged Thayer this afternoon. Earlier, at 7:40 of the first period, Thayer had taken a 1-0 lead when sophomore winger Lincoln Griffin, on the forecheck, won the puck and went short side on Belmont Hill goalie junior goalie Ryan McConnell. Several minutes later, Belmont Hill senior Carl Hesler tied it up at 1-1, converting the rebound of a Golonka shot to tie it up at 1-1.
