Exeter Puts Cushing to the Test
Ashburnham, Mass. -- Phillips Exeter Academy visited Cushing Academy this afternoon for the first half of its annual home-and-home with the Penguins, and came out on the short end, as Cushing's Tom Bardis scored at 5:17 of the third to give his team a 3-2 win.
Cushing thus remains undefeated, while Exeter suffered its first loss of the season.
Cushing dominated the first period, outshooting Exeter 16-5 but failing to get on the board until 45 seconds remained in the stanza. Junior defenseman Sean Coughlin, on the power play, pinched down in the offensive zone and, from the top of the left face off circle took a perfect pass from his defensive partner, freshman Dave Warsofsky, who was stationed at the right point. Coughlin snapped it home for the 1-0 lead, which is how the first period ended.
Exeter, knowing that the strong play of their goaltender, junior Teddy Hume of Austin, Texas, a JV player last season, was the reason they were in a one-goal game despite the shot differential, came out with a purpose in the second period -- and made a game of it.
At the 2:59 mark, a turnover in front of the Cushing net led to a goal by senior Evan Crosby. Bachman, with no time to really set himself, had little chance. Suddenly, Cushing was in a 1-1 game.
But Coughlin, with his second goal of the game, would make it 2-1 at the 8:37 mark, rocketing a shot under the crossbar that Hume had little chance on.
Cushing outshot Exeter 12-11 in the second, and took a 2-1 lead into the dressing room.
Things got tight in the third period, as Exeter tied it up 3:55 into the stanza on a nice goal by Exeter senior Nick Downer, who came down the right side on a 2-on-1, and passed the puck to the slot, leading his twin brother, Chris, who was charging hard toward the net. Twin bro' buried it, and it was a 2-2 game.
It didn't take long for Cushing to get it back, just a little over a minute. And when they did, it would turn out to be the winning goal and a nice one at that as Bardis, breaking hard to the net, took a perfect pass from Warsofsky. Bardis buried it to send the Penguin faithful home happy.
Shots in the third were 12-11 in favor of Exeter, making the final two periods even in the shot department. And that was pretty much the shape of things.
A couple of notes. For Cushing, the Coughlin-Warsofsky defensive pairing was a force -- at both ends of the ice -- every time they stepped on the ice. Warsofsky, a '90, is one of the top young defensive prospects in New England, and he was on his game today. And Coughlin, with Keith Yandle graduated, is taking a larger role. Note also that sophomore defenseman Zach Bogosian was a scratch today, due to a back injury. He should be back soon.
Junior Brad Malone looks much improved in all areas of his game, and played with confidence and purpose.
For Exeter, 6'2", 225 lb. PG defenseman Kevin McCarthy, who is drawing interest from Princeton and Yale, is a force, possessing perhaps the hardest shot we've seen in prep hockey this season.
Offensively, the Downer twins, '88 seniors from Stamford, Conn., were the two most dangerous players for Exeter.
With D.J. Fimiani, Ryan McDonald, and Sean Ryan having been expelled from Exeter earlier this week, Dana Barbin's club will have to dig deep in order to remain competitive. They did that today, even though they had to use two four-year students who'd never even dressed for a varsity game until this week -- Chandler Brewer and Wes Chaput -- and a third, defenseman Sam Cooper, who has seen very little action.
"After the week we had, I was proud of my team," Barbin said. "It was a hard week, but we handled it well. The kids played hard today against a strong Cushing team. Teddy Hume played very, very well."
Down the hall, Cushing head coach Steve Jacobs said, "We came out great in the first period. We were really moving the puck well. I liked the way we played. In the second period, though, Exeter, like good teams will do, came out hard -- and from there on out the game was a battle. Their goalie was exceptional. And our goalie was his usual self. This was a hard-hitting, fun, clean game. It was an excellent Cushing-Exeter battle.
The two teams meet again on Sat. Jan. 28 at Exeter.

Belmont Hill Wins Second Tournament in 12 Days
Belmont, Mass. -- Belmont Hill, which just twelve days ago won the Lawrenceville Tournament, today won the Nichols-Belmont Hill Tournament, topping Gunnery, 3-0.
It marks the first time in the Ken Martin era that Belmont Hill has won both tournaments in one year.
It wasn't easy, though, as Gunnery, which two days ago played Belmont Hill to a 2-2 tie, put up a battle, making this an entertaining final -- from the first shift, when Belmont Hill's Charlie Kenney broke in alone and rang one off the crossbar, to the final buzzer.
In the first period, Belmont Hill had a 10-7 edge in shots and scored the game's only goal of the period when, on the power play, freshman defenseman Ryan Hegarty took a point to point pass from LD Kevin McNamara and wristed a shot low to the ice that tucked inside the near corner, on Gunnery goaltender Pat Street's glove side, giving Belmont Hill a 1-0 lead with 10:55 left in the period.
In the second period, Gunnery came out hard, won the majority of battles for loose pucks and generally gave Belmont Hill fits, which led to five Gunnery power play opportunities in the second period alone. Gunnery went at their opponents hard, outshooting Belmont Hill 11-6, but just couldn't take put anything by senior goaltender Wes Vesprini, who stopped everything he faced in the period, including one sparkling save late.
In the third, again on the power play, Belmont Hill, exhibititing good puck movement, cashed in when Jake Moscatel scored, with assists going to Jason Silvia and Joe Tierney.
With just a little under ten minutes to play, and down by two, Gunnery had to pour it on, and did, using the big sheet well as they got the puck through center ice and into the Belmont Hill end time after time, only to either not get the Grade A opportunity they were looking for or to have Vesprini come up with a nice save.
As the clock ticked down below five minutes, Vesprini came up with a couple of very nice glove saves, as well as snuffing a pair of Gunnery forwards on a well-executed bang-bang play that put the puck on Vesprini's doorstep with little time for the goalie to react.
Gunnery, to their credit, fought to get on the board, finally pulling their goalie, but failing to make it a one-goal game. Instead, Belmont Hill's Kenney scored on the empty net with 58 seconds remaining for the final 3-0 margin of victory.
Afterward, Belmont Hill head coach Ken Martin said, "That was a team effort on our part. The defense played very well. Wes Vesprini is the real deal. And I just thought Matt Gordon was a warrior out there. It's a tough tournament, with five games in three days."
"I was impressed with Gunnery," Martin added. "They were scrappy and they moved the puck well. We thought perhaps they might tire at the end, but instead they were very strong at the end. They'll be a strong team all season long."
Gunnery coach Chris Baudo said, "We worked hard, and played well. I give credit to Belmont Hill, though. They have a great team, and a hot goalie who make it very difficult for us. But it was a great game with a lot of back-and-forth play. It's the way a championship game should be. Both teams battled; we just came up a little short."
Notes: Gunnery had the edge in shots, 29-25... Belmont Hill played the game without forwards Matt McCollem and David Antonelli, both out with injuries.... Seven of the twelve round-robin games ended in ties... The tournament returns to Buffalo next December -- now is a good time to look for a deal on a pair of knee-high snow boots.

Muse, Rhone Pace Nobles to Cushing/Watkins Title
Ashburnham, Mass. -- With the score tied at 2-2 a little over five minutes into the third period of tonight’s Watkins Tournament championship game between #2 Nobles and #3 Cushing, Nobles senior forward Matt Rhone took a pass from sophomore Andrew Glass, and, with Cushing defenseman K.C. Honeyman literally draped all over him, drove deep into the Cushing zone. Kicking the puck back onto his stick, Rhone deked Cushing goalie Richard Bachman to the left, then pulled the puck back and beat the goalie down low for his second goal of the game. It was an individual effort worthy of anyone’s highlight reel. It also turned out to be the game-winning goal, giving Nobles a 3-2 lead.
Nobles would add another goal later in the period, off the stick of sophomore defenseman Derrick Pallis. Jimmy Hayes would cap it off with an empty-netter in the final minute for the final 5-2 margin of victory.
This was the final everyone expected, and with the snow falling outside and a packed house inside Iorio Arena, the game lived up to the hype.
Nobles faced a gut-check in the first minute of play as, just 52 seconds after the opening faceoff, Nobles senior defenseman Chris Huxley was called for elbowing. Less than a minute after that, Nobles defenseman Mark Fayne was called for slashing. Quickly, before some of the crowd had even settled into their seats, Cushing had a two-man advantage.
On the ensuing power play, Cushing immediately took control, but Nobles’ goalie John Muse came up big, making several point-blank saves. As the power play ticked down, Muse, who was down, somehow kicked out his right foot and made a big-time save on a shot off the stick of Cushing’s Damen Nisula, who was parked at the far post.
On the ensuing shift – and with the teams playing at even strength -- Nobles forward Ryan Maguire, looking for the puck by his feet, was the recipient of a hard hit near the center ice boards that he didn’t see coming. Maguire, more accustomed to dishing out such checks, was visibly shaken and slow to get up. No doubt Nobles knew that Cushing was going to be playing a physical game, but that clearly put an exclamation point on the fact.
Five minutes into the second period, Nobles forward Mark Hourihan, using his strength and reach, dug the puck out of the corner and fed Ryan Maguire. Maguire one-touched a pass to linemate Jimmy Hayes who skated the puck through center ice along the right boards. Curling left into center ice, Hayes pulled up and, spinning around to avoid a Cushing defenseman, whiffed on his shot. Unfazed, Hayes took control of the puck again and this time wristed a bullet past Cushing goalie Richard Bachman from 18 feet out to gives Nobles the 1-0 lead at the 5:05 mark.
Late in the second, again on the power play, Cushing evened it up when Alex Curran finished a pretty tic-tac-toe passing sequence that beat Muse at the 15:35 mark. Defensemen Sean Coughlin and Honeyman picked up assists.
Less than two minutes later, with time ticking down on the second period and the teams skating at full strength, Nobles began applying steady pressure on the Cushing defense. With good puck movement, forward Matt Rhone scored the first of his two goals off a feed from Josh Franklin and Andrew Glass to give Nobles a 2-1 lead with 46 seconds remaining.
No one wants to give up a goal in the final minute of a period, especially a go-ahead goal to a road team. However, at the start of the third there was life in the Cushing crowd as the host team began play with 1:44 remaining on another power play opportunity. Not only did Nobles’ aggressive forecheck hold Cushing at bay, but Nobles had a great short-handed chance, forcing Cushing’s Bachman to come up with a nice save on a point-blank slapshot from about five feet.
A little over four minutes into the period, after just finishing killing off one penalty, Nobles took another, their fourth straight, and Cushing cashed in. Patiently moving the puck back-and-forth, Penguins defenseman Dave Warsofsky blasted a beauty of a slap shot from the point that senior John Bardis redirected past a partially-screened Muse at the 5:05 mark to make it a 2-2 game. In addition to Warsofsky, defenseman Sean Coughlin also picked up an assist.
With the Cushing fans sensing a shift in momentum, and in full-volume support after the tying goal, it took Nobles forward Matt Rhone just 37 seconds to wrest away that momentum with his big goal that made it 3-2.
There was still 12:18 to go, though, plenty of time for Cushing to get back into it. It didn’t happen, though, as Nobles kept up the pressure.
Pallis extended the lead to 4-2 with a slapshot from the point at the 13:54 mark. Maguire, last year’s Watkins Tournament MVP, picked up the assist. And then Hayes iced it with his second goal of the night, an empty netter with less than a minute remaining.

CM Takes it To St. Seb's
Allston, Mass. -- Catholic Memorial outworked St. Sebastian's and came away with a 3-0 win in the annual Kevin T. Mutch game played tonight at Harvard University's Bright Hockey Center.
Catholic Memorial senior goalie Brendan Sullivan made 26 saves for the shutout, and was all that he had to be. Without taking anything away from Sullivan's effort, St. Sebastian's made things easy for the Fall River native by frequently shooting at his pads or chest rather than working it around for a quality shot.
The bottom line, though, was simply the fact that Catholic Memorial played like they came to win, outhustling the Arrows in all three zones. Even as the clock wound down, the Arrows failed to play with much urgency. The shot total, which favored St. Seb's 26-23, didn't really give a good sense of the play.
Afterward, St. Sebastian's head coach Steve Dagdigian said, referring to his squad, "That's the team I don't want to see. We need to work harder and work smarter. We didn't do those things. And that's what happens."
"They were outworked. CM played smart, basic, good hockey. Hustle, hustle, hustle."
CM got on the board at 11:01 of the first period, as senior Sean Roche beat St. Sebastian's junior goaltender Connor Toomey to put the Knights up 1-0, with assists going to Chris Corey and and Coleman Noonan.
In the second period, senior Marty Masucci snapped one off from the left faceoff circle to put CM up 2-0 at the 6:31 mark, with an assist going to Mike DiOrio.
In the third, CM's Brian Rosata made a great pass right to left onto the stick of junior Tyler Medeiros, who was busting down the slot and one-time it past Toomey for the final margin of victory at the 8:50 mark.
A couple of minutes later, Sullivan made a nice two-pad stack save on the Arrows' Todd Davis. That was about as close as St. Sebastian's would come the rest of the way.
Afterward, Catholic Memorial head coach Bill Hanson said he was pleased with his team's performance. "The effort was good tonight. I never question that. It's early, and if we practice well, we play well. This was a good win for us against a good opponent."
Note: Tonight's game, which was very well attended, benefits the Kevin T. Mutch Scholarship Fund, which was established to assist boys in attending St. Sebastian's. However, over the past few years, the proceeds have been given to various charities, including the Mark Bavis Scholarship Fund (2001), Hockey Fights Cancer (2002), the Joey Fund (2003), and the Boston Children's Hospital (2004). This year, proceeds from the game will be donated to the Richard Packenham Children's Scholarship Fund.
The scholarship was set up to honor the memory of Kevin Mutch, who graduated from St. Seb's in 1980 and went on to play for Boston University before returning to St. Sebastian's to coach in the 1991-92 season. In the late summer of 1992, Kevin was killed when he was struck by an automobile.
If, in this holiday season, you are among those fortunate enough to have a little disposable income, we suggest that this charity is a worthy benificiary. The address for St. Sebastian's is 1191 Greendale Avenue; Needham, MA 02192 and the phone number is (781) 449-5200.

Salisbury, in OT, Repeats at Flood-Marr
Milton, Mass. -- When the #1 and #2 ranked teams in prep hockey meet up in a tournament finale, the expectations are lofty. Often the games can't live up to the hype.
This one did.
In a tense, exciting Flood-Marr finale, Salisbury came out hard in the second, and struck like lightning for three goals in less than three minutes to take a 3-0 lead. After the third goal, with the game showing the earmarks of an impending rout, Nobles coach Brian Day called a time out. Nobles responded immediately, scoring a goal within a minute to put question marks into the heads of the Salisbury players and followers, then adding another five minutes after that to turn the game into a nail-biter. In the third, Nobles completed the comeback, sending the game into overtime.
And it was there, just 1:20 into the extra stanza, that Will Ortiz scored his second goal of the game, taking the rebound of a Michael Biega shot and one-timing it to the short side, over the blocker of Nobles junior goaltender John Muse.
The win gave Salisbury its second consecutive -- and second all-time -- Flood-Marr title. And, though there is a lot of hockey between now and the first weekend in March, today's game whetted fans' appetites for a potential rematch in Salem, NH, where prep hockey junkies won't be packed in like morning commuters on the Red Line, as they were this afternoon at Milton's rink.
In the first period, good scoring opportunities were rare. Nobles had a 5-on-3 advantage after Salisbury defesnemen David Cavanagh and Alex Biega were whistled for penalties a minute apart. Nobles wasn't really able to get any Grade A scoring opportunities out of it, though.
Their best opportunity came with about four minutes left in the period, when Ryan Maguire dug the puck out of the corner and got it out front to Josh Franklin. However, Salisbury sophomore goaltender Anthony Borelli was set, square to the shooter, and he blocked Franklin's shot.
Salisbury outshot Nobles 7-4 in the period.
Salisbury's second-period blitz started right off the opening faceoff and reached fruition quickly, when junior defenseman Nick Jaskowiak slid down from the right point to the half wall, and threaded the needle with a beautiful pass, right onto the stick of Ortiz at the far side of the crease. It was a bang-bang play and a 1-0 lead for the Steaks.
A minute and 35 seconds later, PG forward Greg Collins, from behind the goal, passed it out front to defenseman Alex Biega, who was streaking toward the net. Biega snapped it up under the cross bar on the short side for a 2-0 lead.
A little over a minute after Biega's goal, Nobles defenseman Mark Fayne was called for roughing. Things looked bad for Nobles -- and they were about to get worse. Just 16 seconds after Fayne stepped into the penalty box, Salisbury's Michael Biega passed it across the top of the crease to Kevin Quick for a back-door attempt that failed. However, Quick gathered up the rebound of his shot and sent it right back across to Biega, who banged it home far side. 3-0, Salisbury, and it really looked like they were going to blow things wide open.
That's when Day called a Nobles time out.
The results were instantaneous. When play resumed it looked like the Nobles players short-term memory was wiped clean. Suddenly, they looked like the team that was leading -- and attempting to put the game away.
Just 1:07 after the time out, Nobles senior center Ryan Maguire got the puck to Mike Griffin who was charging for the net. Griffin caught the pass and, while falling to his knees, scooped the puck past Borelli to cut the Salisbury lead to 3-1.
Nobles kept the pressure on, getting the puck on net and creating traffic in the offensive zone, and tightening up their defensive coverage on the way back up the ice.
Less than five minutes after the first goal, Nobles struck again when 6'3" defenseman Mark Fayne barrelled down the right side and, from just below the face off dot passed it toward the slot where senior forward Mike Murray was driving to the net. Murray banged it home to cut Salisbury's lead to 3-2. Defenseman Chris Huxley also had an assist on the goal.
Late in the period, Nobles sophomore RW Jimmy Hayes curled into the offensive zone and snapped a long shot that hit the post to Borelli's right.
When the period ended, Nobles had outshot Salisbury 14-7. There had been five goals scored in the period, three for Salisbury and two for Nobles.
When the teams lined up for the faceoff at the start of the third, the ice had pools of water on it, so the players had a couple of minutes to stare at the large crowd, do some thinking, and get butterflies. The play was tentative when it resumed.
As the period moved along, Nobles began to create opportunites, while Salisbury simply seemed to have stopped making the plays they are so capable of. Now, they seemed like the team that was waiting for the other shoe to drop.
It finally did drop when, at the 9:37 mark, Nobles senior defenseman Chris Huxley got the puck at the right point, and held it while cooly stepping to his left around Jeremiah Cunningham and wristing a beauty of a shot high into the net to tie the game at 3-3.
In the final minutes of play, Nobles was all over Salisbury, and going for the kill. Their best opportunity to win it in regulation came on a nifty tic-tac-toe passing sequence -- from Fayne to Josh Franklin to Andrew Glass to Hayes. The 6'4" winger had some open net to shoot at but instead executed a toe drag to move in tighter as the opening closed up and the net was simultaneously knocked from its mooring.
Time expired. Nobles outshot Salisbury 8-4 in the period, and 26-18 over regulation.
When the teams came out for OT, Salisbury seemed rejuvenated. You could see it in their body language. It was like they were now the team whose short term memory had been wiped clean.
And when the end came, it came quickly. There was Ortiz, who has a knack around the net. There was the puck on his stick. There was the top corner of the net. And that was it. 4-3 Salisbury in OT.
Great gut check hockey -- by both teams.
Afterwards, Salisbury head coach Dan Donato said, "These are two great teams. It could easily have gone either way. That's a very well-coached team by Brian Day, and we had a ton of respect for them coming in.We feel very fortunate to have won the tournament."
"They capitalized on our mistakes when we took that lead," Donato added. "We haven't had anyone do that to us yet."
Donato cited his players belief in themselves. "When you lose a three-goal lead, it's really easy to fold. In the locker room before OT they were really fired up to come back out."
On the Nobles side, Day was asked what he told his players during the time out.
"I simply told them that a three-goal lead is the toughest lead to hold in hockey, and if we could get the first one we could get back in it. I didn't want them quitting on themselves. They showed a lot of resilience, chipping away and putting the game into overtime.
"I feel good about the way they fought back. Early on, we had some breakdowns, and against really good teams that can't happen. We're disappointed to have lost the tournament, but this is a game we'll learn a lot from as we move forward through the season."

Note: The all-tournament team is chosen by the coaches, though the coaches only pick players on their own team – a quota ranging from one to three depending on where their team finished. So, while all of the above played well, and many were excellent, it’s not really an all-tournament team in the traditional sense. In some cases it’s more a nod of appreciation by the coaches to one or two of their players for a job well done. In addition, coaches will often leave off a big-time younger player in favor of highlighting a player, usually a senior, who had a strong tournament but is not exactly getting a ton of attention from college recruiters. It’s a different approach to picking an all-tournament team, and often leaves newcomers to the event scratching their heads. And that’s why we mention it, because if you understand the ground rules going in, it's not so perplexing.
Lawrenceville Tournament:
Belmont Hill Dethrones Choate
Lawrenceville, NJ -- Belmont Hill won the 58th Annual Lawrenceville Christmas Tournament here today, breaking open a 2-2 tie with three unanswered goals en route to an impressive 5-2 win over Choate, last year's champion.
Belmont Hill took over just 24 seconds after Choate made it 2-2 with 7:25 remaining in the second. Off a faceoff, James Moscatel picked up a loose puck, muscled his way toward the net and beat Choate goaltender Andrew Miller to make it 3-2.
Belmont Hill would add two in the third for the final margin of victory.
Choate started the game strongly, keeping the puck in the Belmont Hill end for most of the first six minutes. But Belmont Hill began to settle down, and the play evened out, with both sides getting their chances. On a 4-on-3 power play, Belmont Hill's Ryan Haggerty took a pretty feed from Mark Dube, who had skated the puck into the Choate zone. Hegarty, from the right circle, snapped a 15-foot shot top shelf before Miller had a chance to set himself, and Belmont Hill took a 1-0 lead.
Choate tied it up at 1-1 on a power play with 18 seconds left in the period as Anthony Depietto took a shot from the right point that Belmont Hill goaltender Wes Vesprini made the initial save on. But Greg Manz, standing on the doorstep, snapped in the rebound.
Early in the second, a strong effort by Dube paid off again, as the Belmont Hill forward broke down the right side into the Choate end and, while holding the stick with one hand and holding off the Choate defender with the other, wristed the puck toward the net where Matt McCollem, holding his ground in front, poked the puck into the open corner to give Belmont Hill a 2-1 lead.
Choate tied the game at 2-2 on Rence Coassin's power play goal at 7:25. After that, Belmont Hill knuckled down to business with Moscatel, as mentioned, notching the tying goal. In the third, Belmont Hill, seeemingly getting stronger as the game progressed, got goals from Kevin McNamara and David Antonelli -- and left town as the 2005 Lawrenceville champions.
Note: Last year, this tournament, always well-run and competitive, was marred by some very shakey work by a handful of referees, some of whom looked as if they'd just learned to skate. This year, the officiating setup was revamped, and the results were terrific.

Gibbons Leads Thayer Past Milton
Milton, Mass. -- Junior center Brian Gibbons had a goal and an assist to lead Thayer, which had lost its first two games of the season, past host Milton, 4-1, today.
Thayer scored four unanswered goals after Milton opened up the scoring when junior Brandon Nunn, on a short pass from the goal line, connected with senior Keith Nelson at 7:06.
Several minutes later, Thayer evened it up at 1-1 when junior Peter Oswald scored from a scrum in front of Milton goaltender Bryan Mountain at 10:34. Assists went to Ryan Driscoll and Justin Harnett.
Thayer went up 2-1 when Greg Malley, from the half boards, connected with freshman defenseman Richard Crowley, who saw a clear path to the net and was streaking to the net. Crowley zipped it up under the crossbar. Mountain had little chance, and Thayer was up 2-1.
Thayer outshot Milton 17-8 in the first. Mountain kept Milton in the game.
In the second period, Milton came out and played with more fire and confidence, and, while unable to score, kept Thayer off the board until late in the period when, on the power play, Gibbons walked in from the right point, deked the man covering him, and fired one. Driscoll knocked home the second rebound to put Thayer up 3-1 at 16:05.
Thayer got their final goal at 9:30 of the third period as Gibbons put on a nice individual move, beating a Milton defenseman and putting a low shot inside the post for the final 4-1 margin of victory. Judson Smith and Mike Baran picked up assists for Thayer.
Afterward, Thayer head coach Larry Rooney said, "It was a nice first win of the year, coming off two losses. I saw some good things from the third and fourth lines and we're starting to get production from Driscoll and Gibbons. It was a good effort. We need to sharpen up a little in the defensive zone though."
Milton coach Paul Cannata said, "We played with a lot of energy vs. St. Seb's the other day. I would have liked to see us come with a little more of that kind of energy today. However, after a disappointing first period, we hung tough. Bryan Mountain gave us a chance to be in the game."

Nobles Dominates Belmont Hill
Belmont, Mass. – With a dominating 8-2 win over Belmont Hill this afternoon, Noble & Greenough showed themselves to be markedly better than the team that bowed out in the quarterfinals at Salem, NH last March. To take it a step further, this squad could be the best in the East, thus making a Salisbury-Nobles matchup in the Flood-Marr or a Cushing-Nobles matchup in the Watkins Tournament pretty tantalizing.
But we’re jumping ahead of ourselves.
Today, Nobles was able to skate freely through the neutral zone, attack the net with speed, and connect on a large number of passes. And more often than not, when Belmont Hill worked the puck into the Nobles end, they were met by a defensive wall.
Nobles didn’t get on the board until 6:56 remained in the first, when a Chris Huxley shot from the point eluded Belmont Hill senior goaltender Wes Vesprini.
A couple of minutes later, Nobles junior Nick Resor broke down the right side and, with a Belmont Hill d-man covering him like a blanket, still managed to get off a nifty backhander from a difficult angle to put his team up 2-0.
Early in the second period Nobles drove a stake into Belmont Hill’s day with three goals in quick succession.
On the first, sophomore Andrew Glass fed junior Josh Franklin with a nice goal mouth pass: 3-0, Nobles.
A minute later, Franklin returned the favor, hitting Glass, who was crashing the net, with a perfect pass. Another bang-bang play and a 4-0 lead.
Just 1:31 later senior Ryan Maguire snapped off a beauty from the top of the left face-off circle to give Nobles a 5-0 lead.
Belmont Hill took a time out and replaced Vesprini with junior Matt Gedman. Belmont Hill got a temporary lift as, a little over a minute later, junior Jake Moscatel, on the power play, lifted it past Nobles goaltender John Muse to cut the lead to 5-1.
In the third period, sophomore Jimmy Hayes took a perfect pass from Maguire to put Nobles up 7-1 with 5:34 left.
With 3:17 remaining in the third, sophomore Will Geary took over for Muse in the Noble & Greenough net.
With 1:55 left, Mark Dube curled out of the corner on the power play and gave Belmont Hill their second goal of the afternoon.
Almost right away, Nobles got it right back when 8th grader Mark Hourihan scored Nobles’ final goal of the day.
