Rank | Record | The Skinny | |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Avon Old Farms | 10-2-0 |
GPG/GAA: 4.50/1.70 -- While Avon is without coach John Gardner, who’s away from the team on a medical leave of absence, they’ve managed to maintain the high level of play that we’ve come to expect. Junior Indiana Grossbard, a Dartmouth commit, has been on fire (2.08 ppg) with 17 pts over the last six games. The Winged Beavers need to maintain their hot start down the stretch NEXT: Sat. Jan 25 vs. Berkshire.
|
2 | Dexter | 13-2-0 |
GPG/GAA: 4.93/2.26 -- Unlike last season, when Dexter found itself just outside the Elite 8 at season’s end, missing out on the Elite 8 seems highly unlikely this time around. Coach Dan Donato’s squad has lost just twice (to fellow poll entrant St. Mark’s, and top 16 team Cushing). Back-to-back wins over Elite 8 contender Brunswick earlier this month launched them to the top of the JSPR seedings, and there's a good chance they’ll remain there if they take care of business down the stretch. Junior BU commit Rian Chudinsky leads the offense (1.93 ppg). NEXT: Sat. Jan 25 @ Brooks.
|
3 | St. Mark's | 11-1-2 |
GPG/GAA: 4.07/1.76 –- Could this be the Lions’ year? The last time St. Mark’s found itself in such rare air was the mid-80's, when Scott Young and brothers Doug and Greg Brown starred in the (then) D-II prep hockey ranks. A crucial win over ISL rival Belmont Hill on Wednesday solidified a place in the JSPR rankings. Senior netminder Justin BriseBois (translation: wood breaker) sports a 1.67 GAA, and .940 SV%. NEXT: Sat. Jan 25 @ St. George’s.

4 | Kimball Union | 14-3-2 |
GPG/GAA: 3.95/1.88 – Coach Tim Whitehead’s Wildcats are again in contention for an Elite 8 spot. While the combination of senior CJ Watroba (14g, 15a, 1.38 ppg), a Merrimack commit, and senior D-man Lucas
Siomos (5g, 20a, 1.19 ppg) has been crucial to KUA’s success thus far, the key, as always in hockey, is the goalie. In that, senior Blake McMeniman (1.78 GAA, .917 sv%) has shined. The Wildcats will need to continue their stingy ways if they wish to repeat as prep champs. NEXT: Fri. Jan 24 @ Brewster Academy.
|
5 | Brunswick | 12-3-2 |
GPG/GAA: 4.85/2.53 -- After a hot start to the season the Bruins came back to earth with consecutive losses to UCC and Dexter (twice) earlier this month. They’ll need to right the ship down the stretch, and a challenging remaining schedule won’t make matters easy. But they have firepower up front – led by junior Joe Salandra (19g, 22a, 2.05 ppg), a Harvard commit, and classmate Mason St. Louis (14g, 16a, 1.67 ppg). In net, junior Dylan Lee-Stack (2.61 GAA) leads prep hockey in minutes played, with 972 thus far. We don’t expect the Bruins to drop out of the Elite 8 by season’s end. NEXT: Fri. Jan 24 @ Millbrook.
|
6 | Deerfield | 9-4-0 |
GPG/GAA: 4.15/2.73 -- As evidenced by wins over Avon, Salisbury, Cushing, and a split with KUA, the Big Green can hang with the top teams in prep hockey. If not for a hiccup against Trinity-Pawling last week, coach Tim McVaugh’s squad would find itself in the #5 spot in the Elite 8 seedings instead of #7, where it currently stands. The aforementioned wins over Top 16 teams will likely help their cause come season’s end -- if they can keep it up. Senior Justin Tavares (8g,16a, 2.00 ppg) leads the Deerfield attack. NEXT: Sat. Jan 25 @ Choate.
|
7 | Salisbury | 9-4-3 |
GPG/GAA: 3.24/2.15 – Having gotten off to a 4-4-0 start, coach Will’s squad has been playing inspired hockey over the last three weeks, going 5-0-1 with wins over fellow Elite 8 contenders Cushing and Deerfield. The knock on Salisbury this season has been a lack of scoring. But that’s changed lately, with a 4.71 GPG pace since the break vs. a 2.2 GPG before. Seniors Connor Davis (10g, 15a, 1.47 ppg), a Northeastern commit, and Ryan Hedley (12g, 12a, 1.41 ppg) lead the Salisbury attack. Splitting time in net, junior Jordan Rittenberg (1.83 GAA) and senior Steven Luciano (2.15GAA) have been getting the job done. NEXT: Sat. Jan 25 vs. Kent.
|
8 | Noble & Greenough | 9-4-1 |
GPG/GAA: 4.07/2.40 – Junior Billy MacAusland (16g, 14a, 2.14 ppg), sits just behind Rivers’ freshman Carter Meyer atop the prep scoring leaders; senior Yale commit Kyle O'Leary (11g, 17a, 2.00 ppg) isn’t far behind. They have talent, but can coach Brian Day’s group come up with the goods down the stretch? We shall see. NEXT: Fri. Jan 24 @ Lawrence.
|
9 | Holderness | 11-2-1 |
GPG/GAA: 6.00/1.72 -– Holderness, 8-1-1 over its last ten games, sports the highest GPG and lowest GAA of any team in this poll. While their gaudy stats are due in part to a weak schedule, make no mistake, the Bulls are a formidable team. Are they an Elite 8 team? We’ll find out after they play Dexter and KUA (twice, or thrice if they meet in the Lakes Region playoffs). PG forward Connor Dozois (12g, 11a, 1.64 ppg) and senior d-man Jeremy Poirier (5g, 17a, 1.17 ppg) lead the attack. NEXT: Fri. Jan 24 at Governor’s.
|
10 | St. George's | 9-4-3 |
GPG/GAA: 4.31/3.03 – St. George’s currently finds itself on the Elite 8 bubble, due in part to a lack of wins over fellow Elite 8 contenders (just that win at Andover). Coach Allie Skelley’s charges have crucial games remaining against Dexter and Eberhart rival St. Mark’s (twice). Win some or all of those and they’ll likely book one of the final spots. NEXT: Sat. Jan 25 vs. St. Mark’s.
