Northwood Updates
Here are some updates concerning Northwood’s schedule, which might be useful for college recruiters and/or NHL scouts following the likes of PG forward Adam Berkle, junior D Marc-Antoine Carrier, and senior D’s Nik Pokulok (Clarkson) and Etienne St-Germain.
-- The Northwood game Sunday vs. the South Kent School at RPI's Houston Field House is a 2:30 start and follows the Cap District-Syracuse EJHL game, which is an 11:15 start. The EJHL web site has that as a 2:00 pm start, but that is not correct.
-- Northwood’s game this coming Wednesday (2/4/09) vs. the Green Mountain Glades (EJHL) is at the Leddy Park arena, not Gutterson. The game time is 1:25 pm.
-- On Sat-Sun. Feb. 21-22 Northwood will be at UMass’ Mullins Center for a pair of games. On Saturday, they play Wyoming Seminary at 2:00 pm. And on Sunday they play the Junior Bruins at 3:00 pm. (FYI, UMass will be home to Maine on Fri-Sat. nights.).
Northwood senior defenseman Nick Cecere, a University of Nebraska-Omaha recruit, left Northwood after the first semester ended last week to join Des Moines (USHL). A late ’90, Cecere, who is from Des Moines, will also be playing for the Bucs next season before enrolling at UNO in the fall of ’10. We was not kicked out of Northwood. Des Moines, his hometown team, wanted him right now, so he decided to do it.

-- Salisbury Comes Back to Earn 2-2 Tie at Berkshire’s Big DaySheffield, Mass. -- Under the dome of Mount Everett, on a brilliant winter afternoon, the Berkshire School officially dedicated the Jackman L. Stewart Athletic Center, an impressive 117,000 square foot building with 14 locker rooms, a state-of-the art fitness center, numerous athletic training rooms, and two ice sheets -- including an Olympic-sized main arena. To say the building raises the bar when it comes to prep arenas is seriously understating things.
But in the game, a potential prep playoff preview, Salisbury came back from a 2-0 third period deficit to steal off into the night with a 2-2 tie.
The momentousness of the occasion – or just the waiting around during the dedication ceremonies – led to some tentative early play. Salisbury came at Berkshire hard and dominated the first four or five minutes. After that, though, the game settled into a long, tentative stretch. The engine was firing, but in fits and starts, and the curious officiating kept the game from developing the flow the occasion deserved.
The first period ended 0-0.
Things picked up in the second when Berkshire broke the ice. Junior Keith Veronesi moved the puck up off the wall in the neutral zone to senior Justin Agosta, who carried it in from the blue line, boring right in on Salisbury junior goaltender Andy Iles. When Iles committed to the shot, Agosta passed it right-to-left onto the stick of sophomore Trevor Mingoia, who tapped it into the unprotected side of the net at the 7:37 mark.
At the 11:37 mark Berkshire went up 2-0 on the power play when senior Andrew Flynn one-timed a nice pass from junior Jake Goldberg. Agosta had an assist on the play, too.
In the third, Salisbury picked it up and got on the board at the 2:28 mark when junior Peter Stratton made a nice pass out from behind the goal line, finding senior John Guay alone in front. Guay snapped it past Berkshire senior goaltender Zeke Testa. Just like that, it was a one-goal game.
Salisbury kept the pressure on and with 6:02 remaining in regulation, and on the power play, senior Frankie Drolet got the puck out to senior Danny Biega at the right point. Biega’s shot, low to the ice, found the far corner to make it a 2-2 game.
The final six minutes of the period were a little chippier than necessary, and the final two minutes saw the two teams skating 4x4 on the big Olympic sheet.
In OT, Berkshire came back and held the edge in play, but had a hard time turning their territorial advantage into good scoring opportunities – and the game ended at 2-2.
Shots in the game favored Salisbury, 35-26.
Afterward, Berkshire head coach Dan Driscoll offered his thoughts. “We have proven we can play with just about anybody. And to come out with a tie against a great team like Salisbury is good, but also disappointing because we were two goals ahead going into the third period.”
Driscoll pointed to the two defensive breakdowns that allowed Salisbury to come back in the third period – leaving an unattended man in front on the first goal, and failing to block the shot/passing lane on Biega’s shot from the point that tied the game at 2-2.
”We played smart for 50 of 54 minutes,” he said.
Down the hall, Salisbury head coach Andrew Will was happy with the comeback. “I was pleased with the way the kids battled back and showed resilience coming back in the third period. They kept working hard, tied it up, and had chances to win.”

-- Placek Leads Hotchkiss Past Exeter
Worcester, Mass. – Hotchkiss, behind a pair of goals from 6’3” Czech sophomore wing Petr Placek, topped Phillips Exeter, 4-2, in a neutral-site game at Holy Cross this evening.
Hotchkiss came out flying and played a first period as good as any we’ve seen from a prep school all season. (The periods were 20 minutes, by the way.) With the exception of the four minutes Exeter was on the power play, Hotchkiss was dominating.
And they scored a pair of goals, too. The first, with Hotchkiss on the power play, came just 2:45 into the game. Junior Derek Deblois made a nice headman pass to Chris Steele who beat Exeter junior goaltender Max Fenkell to make it 1-0.
At the 7:06 mark, Hotchkiss made it 2-0 when senior forward Pierce King, behind the Exeter net, spotted Placek heading toward the crease and made a neat four-foot pass right as Placek – and his stick – reached the outside edge of the post. Converting on a nice anticipation play, Placek tucked the puck inside the post.
Placek struck again 1:52 into the second period, taking a great cross-ice pass from junior Mike Borge and whipping it past Fenkell to put Hotchkiss up 3-0.
It wasn’t looking like Exeter’s day, but perhaps that goal woke them up a bit, or maybe Hotchkiss started getting complacent. Most likely, it was a combination of the two.
What matters was that Hotchkiss took a few penalties in the period, and Exeter cashed in on two of the ensuing power plays.
At the 6:22 mark, Exeter junior Josh Richards, who had a nice game, made a heady pass out of the corner onto the stick of senior Dan Weininger. Exeter’s best finisher beat Hotchkiss junior goaltender Cab Morris to make it 3-1.
Richards then made it a one-goal game. Exeter senior defenseman Jeff Reppucci set it up with a nice play at the blue line, getting the puck to Weiniger, who moved it on to Richards, who roofed it stick side, which in Morris’ case – Fenkell’s too, for that matter – is the left side.
The two goals gave Exeter life, but they would also be the only goals Exeter would score all day.
The two teams battled pretty evenly the rest of the way. Hotchkiss junior LD Mac Bennett, watched closely by the retinue of NHL scouts on hand, ripped one from the top of the left faceoff circle past Fenkell with 1:55 to go.
Shots on the game favored Hotchkiss, 32-30.
“Our goalie played well,” said Hotchkiss head coach Damon White afterward. “Our D competed hard down low. I thought on occasion – not consistently, though – we moved it well, and intelligently, through the neutral zone. In the offensive zone, we were able to get the puck to the net.”
It was pointed out to White that his team played a dominant first period. “That’s been our M.O. all season,” he said. “We’ve played great in the first, but in the second we put it in cruise control and we take penalties and we get in trouble. That’s been the case in three of the last four games. If we recover in the third and stay out of the box we’re fine – and we did that today. We buttoned it up a bit in the third.”
Exeter head coach Dana Barbin’s team exhibited the problem in reverse. “Over the last two games we’ve been down a combined 7-0 early. The other night we came all the way back (Exeter trailed Tabor 4-0 early in the second, but came back to win 6-5 on Wednesday). But tonight we couldn’t.”
… and now for the rest of the action:
@ Canterbury 5, Taft 4 (OT): Canterbury trailed 4-2 entering the third but scored three straight goals, the final one by junior Kevin Goumas at 3:25 of OT to upset the #2-ranked Rhinos. For Taft, seniors Jesse Root and Robbie Bourdon each registered two-point games (1g,1a). Senior Jono Turchetta (1g,1a) led the way for Groton. Middlesex senior Zach Arnold was the story of this game, stopping 46 of 49 shots to preserve the tie. Junior Dale Arnold kicked out 21 of 24 for Groton.

@ South Kent 4, Hill School 0: Seniors Wade Megan (2g,2a), Will Rayner (2g) and Chris Wieland (2a) led the South Kent offense. Sophomore Sam Locke stopped all 16 shots to earn the shutout, while Hill goaltender Steve Messina kept the game respectable by stopping 50 of 54 South Kent shots.
Worcester Academy 4 @ Kingswood-Oxford 0: Junior Anthony Bilotta (2g) and seniors Scott Rosenthal (2g,1a) and Dennis White (3a) powered the Worcester attack. Junior Brian Lynch only needed 13 saves for the shutout.

@ Deerfield 3, Choate 2 (OT): Senior Evan Dugdale buried the game winner, shorthanded at the 3:45 mark of overtime to propel Deerfield to its fifth straight victory. -- No Major Upsets This WednesdayYou may recall last Wednesday’s upsets, when Andover (to Tilton), Exeter (to KUA), and Belmont Hall (to Thayer) all bit the dust. Well, we headed out today looking for the upset of the year.
We didn’t find it.
But we found a BB&N team that was much better -- and much more promising – than we expected.
In the early going of this evening’s game, BB&N jumped all over #4-ranked Lawrence Academy, though just not for very long. In the end, Lawrence won it, 5-2, stretching their win streak to nine games. We have to say, though, that BB&N, whose best skaters are young, hung with them for the first half of the game, before Lawrence took over for a long stretch. However, BB&N got back into it at the end. Basically, it was a 4-2 game with an empty-netter at the end.
BB&N may not be a Keller Division doormat for long. Milton Academy, you may recall, was 3-23-2 in ’02-03 – and all three of those wins were against Div. II teams. That was the team Paul Cannata inherited. Now Milton is battling Lawrence at the top of the Keller Division. Could BB&N have such a resurgence? Hard to say, but they’ll be better next year than they are this year.
BB&N threw a scare into Lawrence today. Three of the Knights first six shots on Lawrence sophmore goaltender Mac Haight were off odd-man rushes that resulted in great scoring chances. They just couldn’t convert.
At 10:14 of the first, though, it was Lawrence that did the converting, as Union recruit Wayne Simpson took a pass from senior defenseman Micah Williams, flew through the neutral zone and into the BB&N end, went wide on a defender and cut in, banking it off the right pad of BB&N senior goaltender Joe Papa.
That was all Lawrence got out of the first period. In the second, a shot from the point by junior defenseman Lucas Sousa was redirected home by Steven Whitney to make it 2-0. Immediately afterward, Lawrence amped it up, and showed why they are currently the cream of the Keller Division. For the rest of the period, the puck only left the BB&N end briefly and infrequently. LA made it 3-0 late in the period when freshman forward Devin Tringale, cutting across the slot, wristed a beauty inside the far post.
With 5:53 remaining in the game, Lawrence upped the lead to 4-0 when a Zach Shannon shot from the point broke off Papa’s pad and into the net. Zack Phillips and Steven Whitney picked up assists on the play. That’s three very good players teaming up – you all know about Whitney, of course, but Shannon and Phillips, both late ‘92s from New Brunswick, are both excellent Div. I prospects. And they’re both sophomores.
BB&N got on the board with 3:33 remaining when freshman defenseman Aidan Hartigan scored on a shot from the left point. A little over a minute later, junior Jack Bartlett took a nice cross-ice pass from junior linemate Greg Tang, and sniped one from out by the right face-off circle to cut Lawrence’s lead to 4-2.
Things were suddenly a little interesting, but BB&N took a high sticking penalty with 1:18 left so didn’t get much of a chance to stage a garrison finish. Instead, Lawrence senior Wayne Simpson scored an empty netter with nine seconds remaining for the final 5-2 margin of victory.
Lawrence goaltender Haight kicked out 22 of 24 shots for the win; BB&N’s Papa stopped 46 of 50 shots.
“I felt we were subpar early in the first,” said Lawrence head coach Kevin Potter. “We weren’t playing with energy. We weren’t taking the body. Even though we outshot them, they weren’t quality shots. (We) turned it on in the second, though. And the BB&N goalie played well.”
BB&N head coach Terrence Butt said, “We are a better team than we give ourselves credit for. We’re a young team, and we had a few Grade A chances early. We hung with them. It was 1-0 after one, 3-0 after two, and then we made a good run late. I’m proud of the way they battled from start to finish.”

@ Salisbury 5, Trinity-Pawling 1: #3 Salisbury dominated as juniors Michael McCann (2g,1a), Billy Fitzgerald (2a), and seniors Danny Biega (1g,1a), and Francis Drolet (2a) all contributed to the Crimson Knight attack. Kreider, Stowell Lead Andover Past Exeter
Andover, Mass. -- #1 Andover, behind solid goaltending, a couple of key plays from junior Chris Kreider, and their opponent’s inability to cash in on numerous power plays, topped #3 Exeter, 4-1, in the big game between the ancient archrivals today.
This was a 0-0 game after one, and a 1-1 game after two. Andover continuously put themselves in a bad situation by taking numerous penalties, killing seven penalties in the game, while Exeter only had to kill two – no home cooking in Andover today.
For a good chunk of the first two periods Exeter was on the power play, and moving the puck nicely. However, Exeter’s shot selection left a bit to be desired, and Andover senior goaltender Glenn Stowell was solid.
Early in the second period, Andover broke out to a 1-0 lead when Kreider, from the far wall, spotted junior Garnet Hathaway breaking over the blue line. Kreider hit him with a nice pass and Hathaway, in alone, finished off with a nice shot, beating Exeter junior goaltender Max Fenkell high to the stick side just 1:09 into the period. Senior defenseman Ryan Heavey also picked up an assist on the play.
Exeter tied it up when PG Matt Hatch, Exeter’s best player all afternoon, hit PG Dan Weiniger with a nice pass. Weiniger beat Stowell high stick side to tie it up at 1-1 with 2:22 in the second.
A minute or so later, Hatch had a great chance to give Exeter a lead they could take into the second intermission, but he couldn’t solve Stowell, and the game was tied after two at 1-1.
The third period started out tentatively, but then Kreider busted loose, and came flying down the left side. There was a little space inside the near post and Kreider jammed the puck toward the opening. It hit the skate of linemate Brooks Dyroff and deflected into the net, giving Andover a 2-1 lead 3:30 into the period.
The game picked up in intensity, and Andover kept the pressure on.
At the 7:38 mark Andover junior Trevor Braun picked up a loose puck near the blue line, left an Exeter defenseman in his wake and, from below the inside edge of the right faceoff circle, sniped a shot, an unexpected beauty that Fenkell wasn’t really set for. It sailed over his right shoulder and into the net to give Andover a 3-1 lead, which was more than they would need today.
A Dyroff empty-netter with 51 seconds left sealed it for Andover.
Shots in the game were even: 26-26.
Afterward Andover coach Dean Boylan said his players knew they had to put in a better effort today than they had against Tilton in Wednesday’s OT loss. “And I didn’t have to tell them either.”
”Today,” he added, “we got a couple of bounces and we were able to kill penalties – thankfully, because they were able to get good looks. I thought Glenn (Stowell) did a great job and made a spectacular save (on Hatch) in the second period. The game could have had a different outcome if he hadn’t made that save.”
Exeter head coach Dana Barbin said, “I was pleased with my team tonight. The kids played their hearts out. It would have helped if we had converted on one of those power plays. We did good things on the power play and moved it around, but we didn’t finish.”
Exeter and Andover meet one more time during the regular season – on the season’s final day, Feb. 28 at Exeter.
--- Due to the late hour -- got a little overextended today -- we will have the recaps posted in the morning.

-- Upsets in OT
Given the no-team-is-unbeatable story line of the season, this afternoon's events were apt, with three major upsets – all in overtime. In the day’s biggest upset, Andover, at home, fell victim to the curse of the USHR #1 ranking, falling victim to unranked Tilton, 3-2 in OT. Meanwhile, unranked Kimball Union, playing at home, knocked off previously undefeated – and #3 ranked -- Exeter, 2-1 in overtime. And #7 Belmont Hill, playing at home, fell victim in OT to unranked Thayer.
We’ll have a little more on those games later, but now, our feature game:
-- Two Teams Headed in Opposite Directions
Between injuries, suspensions, and shaky goaltending, Nobles’ season – since winning the Flood-Marr Tournament -- has become a fast downward spiral.
With tonight’s 5-4 overtime loss to Lawrence, the Noblemen have lost six of their last seven, the only win a 4-3 OT decision over Pomfret in the 7th place game of the Watkins Tournament Jan. 3rd.
Lawrence, meanwhile, won that tournament and continues on a roll, with seven straight wins.
Despite not playing very well as a team today, Nobles hung in there all day. They have obvious skill, and were able to cash in on three power plays. But no matter what the manpower situation was -- whether they were playing a man up at even strength -- they were less than the sum of their parts. While there were some impressive individual efforts from Nobles players, there was not much in the way of great puck movement. However, there were plenty of lead changes – the game was really nothing but lead changes, as every Lawrence goal was answered by a Nobles goal – until the final one.
Lawrence went up 1-0 on a wraparound goal by sophomore Michael Jamieson at 4:25 of the first. Then with two seconds left in the period, Nobles tied it up at 1-1 when sophomore Kevin Hayes fed junior Jared Lackey, who came down the left side with speed and fired at the net. It looked like it may have been tipped past Lawrence senior goaltender Matt Walsh by junior Mark Hourihan, but the goal was credited to Lackey. No matter what, that was the last even strength goal until overtime. The next six goals would come on the powerplay.
In the second, on a powerplay midway through the period, Nobles sophomore defenseman Mike Reardon took a shot from the right point that deflected off Walsh's right pad, and right onto the stick of an uncovered Billy Arnold, who scooped it into the net for a 2-1 Nobles lead.
Lawrence came right back and tied it at 2-2 on a nice cross-slot diagonal pass by Steven Whitney to Wayne Simpson at the 12:43 mark.
Nobles' Lackey was called for hooking at the buzzer and Lawrence entered the third period with over a minute of 5x3 play. They cashed in, too, when a shot from the point by sophomore Zach Shannon rocketed off the backboard and right out front onto the stick of senior Wayne Simpson, who put it behind Nobles junior goaltender Billy Burchill for his second goal of the game..
At the 7:14 mark, Arnold took off up the right side, curled to the net, and stuffed it in the corner past Walsh to tie it at 3-3. Burchill picked up an assist on this one.
Lawrence went ahead with 5:16 to go when sophomore Zack Phillips, from along the goal line to Burchill’s right, made a nice behind-the-back pass to senior Brendan Cottam out front, giving Lawrence a 4-3 lead.
The prosperity was too much for Lawrence, though, and with one player already in the box, Lawrence’s Logan Gillis took a bad neutral zone penalty giving Nobles a 5x3 with 4:36 left.
Nobles cashed in, with Arnold making a nice diagonal pass from the point to Lackey at the far corner of the net, tying the game up at 4-4 with 2:38 to go.
Lawrence gave Nobles another nice power play with under two minutes to go in the third, but Nobles couldn’t make much of it.
Lawrence didn’t get their first shot in OT until the 3:04 mark when, after a Nobles turnover at the blue line, a Lawrence player -- either defenseman Shannon or forward Scott Shiner – got the puck to Cottam, who fired it far side for his second goal of the game and the game-winner.
Lawrence outshot Nobles, 40-29 in the game.
Afterward, Lawrence head coach Kevin Potter said, “I thought we put in a good effort. The team has a lot of confidence now. And even though we gave up three power play goals, we still had confidence in our penalty killing. I thought the flow was cut up by the amount of penalties. The whole game was one of special teams, but that’s something we’ve been working really hard on. I thought it was a gutty performance by our team.”
We don’t know what Nobles coach Brian Day had to say, but he spent a long, long time in the room with his players after the game. And this typist had to get back into town.
Nobles has a good chance to get healthy at BB&N on Friday, but don’t think BB&N isn’t lying in wait, licking their chops.

And Today’s Recaps:
Kent 5 @ Trinity Pawling 1: Three Kent goals in a five-minute span of the second period were enough to propel the Lions to their sixth win of the season. Kent’s five goals were scored by five different players. Keying the Lions attack were seniors Kyle Lysaght (1g, 2a) Chris Buquicchio (3a), Mike Domsodi (1g, 1a), and junior Paul Cinquegrana (1g, 1a). Junior Marco De Filippo stopped 19 of 20 in a winning effort.
Tilton 3 @ Andover 2 (OT): #1 ranked Andover was the victim of a major upset this afternoon, falling victim to their opponents from New Hampshire. Tilton, on the strength of two goals by senior Kevin Meehan, took a 2-1 lead in the third period, only to see that snatched away when Andover junior defenseman Bennett Carroccio (1g) tied things up at 2-2 with just 24 seconds left in regulation. Senior Joey White (1g) buried the game winner just 44 seconds into OT. For the victorious Rams, the offense was led, as mentioned, by Meehan (2g) and junior Justin Ducharme (2a). Tilton senior Nick Drew kicked out 23 of 25 shots for the win. The Andover offense was powered by senior Josh Geary (1g, 1a).
Andover didn't execute today and were pushed hard in all three periods -- and all three zones -- by Tilton, who came up with a huge effort, played a focused, confident game, and were able to negate the strength of Andover. As for Kreider, the puck just didn't really bounce right for him all day. The star of the day was Tilton's Meehan, who worked hard, made plays, and finished.
@ Hotchkiss 4, Avon Old Farms 1: Four straight Hotchkiss goals were more than enough for the Bearcats to upend Founders rival, Avon Old Farms, 4-1. Leading the Hotchkiss offense was senior TJ Cholnoky (2g), and juniors Matt Coleman (1g) and Ken Matheson (1g). The Avon goal, scored on a 5x3, was registered by sophomore Morgan Mullen. In his second consecutive start, freshman Jay Williams picked up the win, stopping 20 of 21 Winged Beavers shots.
@ Tabor 6, Cushing 4: Six of the ten goals scored in this game were registered by special teams. This game was back-and-forth until the Seawolves scored two consecutive goals roughly two minutes apart early in the third period. #10 Cushing would come back to cut the deficit to one, but an empty-netter by Tabor sealed Cushing's fate. For Tabor, senior Jayson Megna (1g, 2a), sophomore Cam Spiro (1g, 1a) and senior Thomas Kader (1g, 1a) led the Seawolves attack. Cushing was fueled by senior Mike Bosco (1g, 1a), and juniors Mike Conderman (1g, 1a) and Conor Sheary (1g, 1a). Tabor senior Nick Betti kicked out 21 of 25 in the win.
@ Northfield Mt. Hermon 5, Stanstead College 3: Two third period goals for the Hoggers were enough to propel them past visiting Stanstead College. With their five goals coming from five different players, the NMH offense was fueled by junior Josh Woody (1g, 2a), and sophomores John Cangelosi (1g, 1a) and Garrett McMullen (2a). Stanstead’s offense was led by junior Olivier Letourneau (2g). NMH senior netminder Ryan Dillon stopped 24 of 27 for the win.
Thayer 1 @ Belmont Hill 0 (OT): Continuing with today’s theme of overtime upsets, #7 Belmont Hill dropped a 1-0 overtime shocker to Thayer. Sophomore Charlie Coyle registered the winner just 59 seconds into OT. Princeton recruit Mike Condon stopped 27 of 28 for Belmont Hill, but was bested by the superb effort of Sal Tecci, who pitched a 35 save shutout.
@ Groton 2, Vermont Academy 1: A Vermont Academy goal at 13:20 would not be enough, as host Groton held on for a 2-1 victory. Scoring for the Zebras came from the underclassmen as freshman Zach Baharozian (1g) and sophomre Garrett Sunda (1g) provided the offense. Junior Dale Adams stopped 21 of 22 shots to secure the victory.
@ KUA 2, Exeter 1 (OT): #3 Exeter, previously the lone undefeated team in NEPSIHA play, was upset Wednesday by Kimball Union. Exeter got on the scoreboard first, on a power play goal Dan Weiniger (1g) 3:04 into the first period. However, a late third period goal by KUA sophomore Ryan Cole (1g) sent the game into OT where senior Kyle Gurry (1g) buried the winner with just three left in overtime. KUA sophomore Martin Ouellette was stellar in net, kicking out 33 of 34 shots.
@ Pingree 4, Dexter 3 (OT): A game that saw six of its seven goals scored in the third period eventually went to OT, where host Pingree scored just 1:19 in to seal it. The Pingree attack was propelled by senior Matt MacDonald (2g) and junior Kyle Lange (2a), while senior Adam Rimmer (1g) buried the clincher in overtime. The Hokies offense was powered by sophomore Steve McKenna (2a) as three different players scored for Dexter. Pingree senior Trevor Leahy stopped 30 of 33 shots for the win.
@ St. George’s 5, Brooks 1: On the strength of their special teams, host St. George’s cruised to a 5-1 victory over Brooks. The St. George’s attack was driven by seniors Kevin Shelton (2g) and Carmen Boscia (2a), and juniors Garrett Sider (3a) and Mike Violette (2a). Sophomore Paul Roche stopped 20 of 21 for St. George’s.
Holderness 4 @ Winchendon 3: Visiting Holderness stormed all the way back from a three-goal second period deficit to defeat Winchendon. To add to Holderness heroics, the tying goal and winning goals were scored while shorthanded. Leading the comeback for Holderness was senior Nick Neron (2a), as the four goals were scored by four different players. Winchendon’s offense, all in the first period, was led by seniors Corey Bellamy (1g, 2a), Adam Hercules (1g, 1a), and Corey Lee (2a). Holderness junior Jeff Wasson stopped 31 of 35, while Winchendon’s Alex Eckhardt kicked out 21 of 25.
@ Governor’s 6, BB&N 1: Governor’s sandwiched three goals in the first and third periods to roll over BB&N. Governor’s junior Cody Ferriero recorded a hat-trick (3g, 1a), while sophomore Drew Tallett (3a) and juniors Jake Picking (3a) and Brett Riley (1g, 1a) helped lead the Governor’s offense. Senior Dominic Malerba allowed one goal on 19 shots for the win.
@ Taft 5, Westminster 3: With the score knotted at 3-3 after two periods, #4 Taft pulled away with two late third period goals. Leading the Rhinos attack were seniors Jesse Root (1g, 1a), Erik-Lars Hansen (1g, 1a), Mike Sinsigalli (1g, 1a), Matt Herskovitz (1g, 1a), and junior Thomas Freyre (2a). Westminster was led by senior Joey Campanelli (1g, 1a) and junior Peter Michaildis (2a). Taft junior goaltender Mike Petchonka stopped 26 of 29 to earn the win.
Brunswick 6 @ Kingswood-Oxford 1: Visiting Brunswick continued its offensive onslaught from Saturday, by defeating Kingswood-Oxford convincingly by a tally of 6-1. The Bruins attack, led by a hat-trick from junior Ben Weisburger (3g), was also supported by sophomores Bo Stafford (1g, 1a) and John Kelly (2a), and junior Nick Trepp (2a). Mike Furlong faced only fifteen shots in the game.
@ Berwick 7, Portsmouth Abbey 3: Berwick, on the strength of three goals in the first period, defeated Portsmouth Abbey, 7-3. Leading the Bulldog attack were juniors Oliver Jansson (2g, 1a) and Chris Atwood (2g), sophomore Alex Tobey (1g, 2a), and seniors Aaron Harris (2a), Tom Hay (2a), and Matt Tucceri (1g, 1a). D. Lavaiano had 2 assists for Portsmouth Abbey. Berwick junior Shaun Millerick stopped 16 of 19 to pick up the win.

Hebron was led by junior Andrew Bettencourt (2g, 2a) and senior Cam Moniz (2g). Proctor sophomore Frankie McCormick stopped 28 of 34 shots to pick up the victory.
@ Milton 2, St. Paul’s 1: A Sean Okita goal just 4:11 into the second period proved to be the eventual game winner as host #6 Milton defeated St. Paul’s. Milton’s goals were scored by Chris Sperandio and the aforementioned Okita. Holy Cross recruit Thomas Tysowsky kicked out 23 of 24 for the Mustang victory.
@ Deerfield 4, Loomis-Chaffee 2: Deerfield rebounded Wednesday with a win over Founders League opponent Loomis by a tally of 4-2. Deerfield had its special teams working, registering one goal on the power play, and another while shorthanded. Leading the attack for the Big Green were Princeton recruit Andrew Ammon (2g, 1a), Yale recruit Antoine Laganiere (1g), Evan Dugdale (1g), junior John Rose (2a), and fellow junior, Dartmouth recruit Nick Lovejoy (1a). Junior Casey DeSmith and senior Grant Dennis split time in between the Deerfield pipes to earn the victory.

Choate 9 @ Canterbury 6: In another offensive onslaught, #9 Choate and Canterbury combined for fifteen goals on Wednesday. @ Brewster 4, Kents Hill 1: Four consecutive goals in the second and third periods were more than enough for Brewster to coast past visiting Kents Hill. Two Games.... and a Bit of Snow
We had this doubleheader circled on the calendar early: a day-night twinbill, with Taft hosting Avon in the early game and, 30 miles to the southeast, Andover visiting Choate for the nightcap. As yesterday dawned, we realized it would be a heavy slog through the snow, but, hey, we’ve been through worse, and many times, too.In the early game, at Taft, Avon Old Farms rolled in and just played a solid, thorough game, neutralizing a very good Taft team, and heading back up the highway with a 5-1 win.
There was nothing overpowering about the win. Unlike last season’s Winged Beavers, the ’08-09 edition lacks firepower and depth.
It does show, though, that Avon, stripped as they were by graduation, the USHL, the NTDP et al., are still not to be taken lightly. Teams should be beating up on them now, while they have the chance. Head coach John Gardner is restocking the pantry, and things will be more difficult for opponents next year.
Taft, which had beaten Avon 7-4 on Dec. 10 at Avon, had a chance to make it a clean sweep of Avon, but didn’t. Worse, they were barely there.
Taft, on a C.M Liotta goal that beat Avon junior netminder Josh Dionne – a softie, as he left the short side unprotected – managed to sneak a 1-0 lead into the second period – and then let Avon dictate the game from that point on.
At the 5:19 mark, with the teams playing 4x4, junior Quinn Smith made a passout from behind the Taft net that found senior Stefan Demopoulos in front. Bingo. Tie game.
Avon continued to control the second period. Taft had difficulty breaking the puck out of their end, and trouble at the other end stringing passes together and creating any kind of sustained offense. If Taft did get a shot on net, Dionne turned it away, and his defensemen played well in front of him.
In the final minute of the second, a Taft defensive zone miscue resulted in the puck winding up on the stick of junior Kevin Tiefenwerth in the high slot. Tiefenwerth buried a nice shot to give Avon a 2-1 lead to take into the second intermission.
The third period was a disaster for the Rhinos, as Avon scored a pair of shorthanded goals 1:04 apart, the first when Demopoulos followed up a Quinn Smith shot and jammed it through Taft goaltender Steve Racine. A few minutes later, sophomore Mark Naclerio took a nice pass from Blake Forkey and beat Racine to make it 4-1. And a few minutes after that, Forkey beat Racine short side on the power play for the final 5-1 margin of victory.
“They outcompeted us, outworked us, and outhustled us,” Taft head coach Dan Murphy said afterward. “Also, when you give up a goal in the last minute of the period, and two shorthanded goals, you’ve violated some basic hockey principles – and you’re not going to win.”
Avon’s bench coach John Gardner, on the other hand, was feeling fine. “I was impressed with our guys and our effort. Coming down here and beating the #1 team in New England is a feather in our cap.”
“We came to play,” he added. “We were focused, and we worked hard.”
Gardner said his team’s approach was to contain Taft’s top line. “I didn’t want #14 (Robbie Bourdon) to beat us. If you give him time and space he’ll hurt you.”
Bourdon was not a factor in the game. To take it a step further, none of Taft’s forwards were.
Avon’s forwards, on the other hand, were very noticeable, particularly Demopoulos (2g,1a), and Forkey (1g,2a), Smith (2a), and Tiefenwerth (1g,1a),

The drive from Watertown to Wallingford was a slog and a half, but worth it. The Choate Arena was packed, the students were in full voice, and two very good teams went at it hard in a very good prep game. And when it was over, it went in the books as a 3-3 tie, which was totally representative of the play. This was a game where you were glad shootouts don’t exist in prep hockey (outside of tournaments, that is).
The game was a two-parter. The first half or so belonged to Choate, then Andover took over for the rest of the way.
Choate got on the board 10:37 in when Colgate recruit Billy Rivellini took a nice pass from senior Joel Goodsell and wristed it top corner, over the glove of Andover senior goaltender Glenn Stowell.
Then, just ten seconds later, the Wild Boars went up 2-0 when Goodsell took a shot and freshman Phillipe Hudon, cutting across the top of the crease with his stick at chest level, batted the rebound into the net.
Choate’s two-goal lead didn’t last far into the second.
Wild Boars’ junior goaltender Nick BonDurant mishandled a Bennett Carroccio shot and Andover cut the lead to 2-1 at the 6:04 mark.
Then Choate just started taking penalties left and right. They paid the price when Andover PG Josh Geary tied the game at 2-2 with a 5x3 goal at the 15:02 mark.
But, 26 seconds later, Choate responded, as Rivellini came flying down the right side and made a saucer pass to the front of the net, where sophomore Dan Linell tipped it past Stowell for a 3-2 Choate lead, which they’d carry into the second intermission.
From where we stood, we didn’t think the Wild Boars would be able to carry a lead into the third. They were fortunate. They’d been outshot 17-7 in the period, and they’d taken six minor penalties to Andover’s two. That can take its toll.
And it did in the third.
Just 1:11 into the period, a good, hard hit on Hudon along the near boards knocked the freshman out of the game, leaving the Wild Boars without his services for the duration of the game (The hit, by Carroccio, knocked the wind out of the impressive freshman; he may have a slight concussion, too.)
When play resumed after a five-minute delay while Hudon was being tended to, Choate never got it going again. They seemed flat.
Andover tied it up at the 10:13 mark when junior Chris Kreider, who draws a phalanx of NHL scouts to his every game, made a nice pass out from behind the net and senior linemate Brooks Dyroff knocked it home for the tying goal.
That was all she wrote. Andover carried the play down the stretch and through overtime, but Choate hung in there. Mark Goggin had a nice chance for Choate in OT, but couldn’t bury it.
”I liked the way we came back after a poor first period,” said Andover head coach Dean Boylan. “I thought we competed a whole lot better in the second and third period.”
Choate coach Pat Dennehy said, “We had a great first period but lost some of our energy in the second. We had that string of penalties called against us – that was a factor. But they’re a big, physical, strong team and we didn’t match their energy in the second half.”
Good game. Two good teams. The ride back to Boston, through the snow, was a little arduous. Was too snowblind to write up the games last night, but here they are now. Sorry for the delay.

Welcome, Advertisers
Over the years, a lot of readers with businesses have asked us if we would be offering advertising. We always wanted to do it, but only in a way that would allow everyone, no matter how small their budget, to effectively get their message out. What we decided on was a system of sponsorships – basically, text-based advertisements – to appear on a page of one’s own choosing.
For example, if you owned a hotel or restaurant in Salisbury, Connecticut, it might give your business a boost to sponsor one of Salisbury’s four different Team Pages, either Roster, Schedule, Results, or Stats. But this does not have to be limited to businesses. Alums, parents – anyone, really -- may sponsor a page. These “ads” are simple text boxes similar to Google ads – just type in what you want, and that’s what will appear. Because you are renting the space, you can go back and update your message to suit different occasions.
We are also offering Marketplace Sponsorships. These will appear in the areas of heaviest traffic – i.e. polls, standings, stat leaders, scoreboard page, and box scores. These ads, which cost a little more, rotate around amongst the aforementioned pages. Marketplace ads will be of interest to those trying to reach the broadest number of readers, and would include businesses with both a direct and indirect interest in the prep hockey world.
Some examples:
-- Hockey camps
-- Tournaments
-- Tryout camps
-- Leagues
-- Hotels and restaurants
-- Equipment manufacturers and retailers
-- Boarding Schools
-- Conditioning and weight training facilities
-- Family advisers
-- Trophy manufacturers
-- Rink designers, builders, and suppliers
-- Team photographers
-- Bus lines
We could go on. The bottom line is this: whatever your business, we have space for you. Of course, all ads will be vetted for appropriateness. If you take out a sponsorship supporting a specific team, please avoid derogatory comments about opponents. And please consider USHR a portal that opens up your business to a discerning group of readers and consumers. If you have something of quality to offer, you will find a highly receptive audience. Remember to include your web address in order to bring readers to your site! Good luck and thank you for your support.

Wed. Jan. 7, 2009 Recaps
Belmont, Mass. – Milton Academy, on a Kyle Hunchberger snipe 29 seconds into overtime, edged Belmont Hill, 2-1, here today.
Milton, after falling behind 1-0 with 56 seconds remaining in the second period, responded with a strong third period, tying the game up on a Sean Okita goal at the 6:39 mark. The Mustangs then wasted no time winning it in overtime.
Milton has shown a steely determination so far this season. To date, they have a 7-2-3 record in their 12 NEPSIHA Div. I games. Of special note is the fact that nine of those games have been extremely close contests – i.e. decided by one goal or less. And in those nine nailbiters Milton is undefeated at 6-0-3.
In other words, don’t let the Mustangs hang around.
That’s what Belmont Hill did today.
Early on, Milton, which had played three games in the Tabor Tournament Saturday and Sunday, appeared sluggish. Their passes were missing the mark. Belmont Hill, on their big sheet, was beating them to loose pucks. It looked like a game in which Belmont Hill might jump out to a quick lead, but they couldn’t take advantage and, while Milton steadily got their legs underneath them, the game turned into a battle of two of the east’s stellar goaltenders in Belmont Hill’s Mike Condon and Milton’s Thomas Tysowsky. Neither goaltender was being called upon to make spectacular saves. They were simply stopping everything that came their way, and making it look pretty easy, too.
It wasn’t until 56.6 seconds remained in the second period that the game’s first goal was recorded and it came off a Milton turnover in the slot. On a heads-up play Belmont Hill junior Brendan Fadden quickly slid it to Brandon McNally, who snapped it past Tysowsky to give the Hillies a 1-0 lead to take into the second intermission.
A goal given up in the last minute of a period can be dispiriting, but instead Milton came out and played a strong third period, tying the game at 1-1 when junior Jonathon Mleczko came flying down the right side and fired a low, hard shot on net. The puck rebounded off Condon’s right pad and Okita deposited the rebound at the 6:39 mark.
With 43 seconds left in regulation, Belmont Hill’s McNally fed senior Matt Ronan with a nice pass, but Ronan’s shot clanged off the post, and the game went to OT. Yes, it’s a game of inches.
In overtime, the puck quickly wound up in the corner to Condon’s right. Ryan Edwards and Jay Haseley went in after it, won the battle for the puck, and got it out to Hunchberger. The 6’2” native of Montreal held his shot neatly until he was in the slot and then just roofed a beauty. Game over -- and it took only 29 seconds.
“I was happy with the third period,” said Milton coach Paul Cannata. “We built confidence as we went along and managed to sneak out of here with a win. If you get two points here you have to be happy. Belmont Hill is a good team and Condon is a good goaltender.”
-- Belmont Hill outshot Milton in the game, 28-27.
-- There were only four penalties called in the game – three against Belmont Hill, and one against Milton.
-- Belmont Hill star sophomore forward Connor Brickley had to sit the game out. In the first period of Belmont Hill’s previous game, a 5-2 loss to South Kent in the semifinals of the Nichols-Belmont Hill Tournament Tues Dec. 30th, Brickley was assessed a major and a game misconduct for a hit from behind.
-- Milton goaltender Thomas Tysowsky has committed to Holy Cross for next fall.
***
-- @ BB&N 2, Thayer 0: Senior goaltender Joe Papa kicked out all 43 shots he faced in a 2-0 shutout of Thayer this afternoon in Cambridge, Mass. Juniors Greg Tang and Eric Danilchuk scored the Knights' goals. Thayer junior goaltender Sal Tecci had a strong game, stopping 28 shots.
-- Exeter 4 @ Governor's 1: Senior Nick Kondiles had a goal and an assist, junior Max Fenkell had 28 saves, and Exeter topped GDA to remain undefeated in NEPSIHA play.
-- @ Choate 9, Millbrook 3: Leading the Wild Boars' attack were senior Joel Goodsell (2g,1a), freshman Philippe Hudon (2g,1a), seniors Billy Rivellini (1g,1a) and Mark Goggin (1g,1a), sophomores Dan Linell (2a) and Adam Patel (2a), and senior defenseman Wes Marcik (2a).
-- @ St. Sebastian's 8, Nobles 1: Billy Arnold gave Nobles an early 1-0 lead but it was all St. Seb's the rest of the way. Leading the Arrows' attack were juniors Tommy O'Regan (2g,1a) and Peter Burke (1g,2a), seniors Chris Brown (1g,1a) and Dom Jancaterino (1g,1a), sophomore Stephen Brown (1g,1a), and senior defenseman Mac Lalor (2a). And let's not forget St. Seb's sophomore goaltender Don McGuirl, who kicked out 23 of the 24 shots he faced. A lot of players out with injuries in this game, including Nobles star forward Kevin Hayes (7-14 days, shoulder) and defenseman Mike Reardon (groin).
-- @ Berkshire 10, South Kent 5: Senior Andrew Flynn (1g,4a) had five points, sophomore Trevor Mingoia (2g,2a) had four points, and juniors Jake Goldberg (1g,2a) and Ben Chwick (2g,1a), senior Cam Miller (1g,2a), and senior defenseman Justin Agosta (3a) each had three points for the Bears.
-- @ Dexter 5, St. Mark's 1: Sophomore Brendan Fitzgerald (1g,2a), freshman Cameron Darcy (2g), junior Mike Lopez (1g,1a), sophomore Steve McKenna (2a), and senior Robert Lerro (2a) led Dexter's attack.

In Double OT, Deutsch Lifts Milton to Tabor Tournament Title
10:00 am – Tilton 4, Hill 1 -- Kevin Meehan scored a pair of goals for Tilton.
12:00 pm – Tabor 4, St. Sebastian's 2 -- Eric Czapka (1g,2a), Anthony Mezzagno (1g,1a), and Andrew Jelinek (2a) lead the Seawolves.
2:00 pm – Championship Game: Milton 5, Governor's 4 (2-OT) -- It took a total of 14:02 of overtime and a wrist shot by defenseman Aaron Deutsch to lift Milton Academy to a 5-4 win over over Governor's Academy and the Tabor Tourney championship. Governor's had a 3-1 lead in this game, but the Mustangs came right back with three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead late into the third period. However, Alex Gacek, off a pass from Chris Menard, tied it up for Governor's with 1:53 to go. Deutsch (1g,2a) and Chase Davis (1g,1a) finished as Milton's leading scorers. Gacek (1g,2a) and Brian Ward (2g) led the way for the Governors. Thomas Tysowsky was in goal for Milton; Dominc Malerba for GDA. This game will count as a tie for NEPSIHA seeding purposes.
Undefeated in Europe, But Can They Yodel?
Exeter is back from their holiday trip to Italy and Switzerland. They tied Ambri-Piotta, 3-3; won 3-2 over Zurich; won 3-1 over Lugano; and won 6-1 in a rematch against Ambri-Piotta for the Challenge Cup. Max Fenkell continued his strong play, going 2-0 (the Zurich game, and the title game vs Ambri-Piotta), making a combined 67 saves on 70 shots. The other three tenders (Andrew Jankowsi, Greg Jenkins, and Joe Blundo) played well in the 3-3 tie and 3-1 win over Lugano, whose assistant coach, by the way, is former Boston Bruins goaltender Marco Baron. Exeter scoring looked like this: Matt Hatch (4,5a), Dan Weiniger (3g,4a), Nick Kondiles (4g,2a), Tom Larkin (5a), and Jeff Reppucci (1g,3a). In addition, James Shannon, Ryan Williamson, and Josh Richards each had one goal.

Lawrence Takes First Watkins Title in 12 Years
9:00 am – 7th Place Game -- Nobles 4, Pomfret 3 (OT) -- Freshman Andrew Doane scored at 1:35 of OT to lift Nobles to a much-needed win. Sophomore Matt Harlow (2g,2a) figured in all four Nobles goals.
11:10 am – 5th Place Game -- NMH 5, Canterbury 3 -- Canterbury broke out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by senior Sean Murray. But Northfield came back, led by juniors Nick Gordon (1g,3a) and John Sucese (2g). Senior John Gallagher and sophomore Garrett McMullen each had a pair of assists. Junior Branden Komm kicked out 46 of 49 shots.
1:20 pm – 3rd Place Game -- Cushing 4, Culver 2 -- Junior goaltender Mike Reed kicked out 36 of 38 shots to lead the Penguins to a third place finish. Seniors Casey Brugman (1g,1a) and Neil Lavanchy )1g,1a) led the offense.
3:30 pm – Championship Game: Lawrence 3, Berkshire 2 (final) -- Senior Matt Walsh had an excellent game in goal and senior forward Steven Whitney (1g,2a) figured in all three Lawrence goals to lead the Spartans to a 3-2 win and the Watkins Tournament championship. The stake in Berkshire's heart came when, with the Bears on a full 5x3 power play and down by a goal, Whitney stole puck at offensive blue line for an unassisted shorthanded goal that put Lawrence up 2-0. In the second, senior Brendan Cottam put LA up 3-0, converting a great Whitney feed in front. Berkshire then got going with a couple, with junior Jake Goldberg and junior Keith Veronesi (on the power play) cutting the lead to 3-2 before the end of the period. There was no scoring in the third, though Whitney came close, rining one off the crossbar. Senior Zeke Testa was in goal for Berkshire today.
All-Tournament Team:
Pomfret -- #19 Kevin Karales, Sr, F
Nobles -- #2 Gus Young, Jr. D
NMH -- #18 Nick Gordon, Jr. F
Canterbury -- #2 Chris Cerbino, Sr. F
Culver -- #15 Zach Sternberg, Sr. D
Culver -- #22 Brad McBride, Sr. F
Cushing -- #16 Casey Brugman, Sr. F
Cushing -- #17 Neil Lavanchy, Sr. F
Lawrence -- #4 Micah Williams, Sr. D
Lawrence -- #5 Wayne Simpson, Sr. F
Berkshire -- #9 Jake Goldberg, Jr. F
Berkshire -- #19 Justin Agosta, Sr. D
MVP: Lawrence senior goaltender Matt Walsh.
Note: We understand that coaches voting for these all-tournament teams like to highlight unsung players who had a strong tournament, but we still have a hard time with Lawrence forward Steven Whitney being totally left off the all-tournament team. We would have voted him the MVP. When you have a hand in all three goals in a championship game (including a big 5x3 SHG)... well, you get the point. Maybe they should have a Most Valuable Skater and a Most Valuable Goaltender. Including Walsh, three of the last four MVPs in the tournament have been goaltenders (the other two were John Muse three years ago and Jason Torf last year).

Watkins Tournament at Cushing Academy (Day 2 of 3)
9:00 am – Culver 7, Canterbury 4 (final) -- Culver, down 2-1 midway through the game, exploded for five goals in seven minutes en route to a 7-4 win over Canterbury. Senior Kit Sitterley (2g,1a), senior Bradley McBride (1g,2a), and junior Tieg Alward (1g,2a) led the way. Junior Matt Mahalak got the win in net. For Canterbury, junior Kevin Goumas (2g,1a) was the top gun.
11:10 am – Berkshire 3, Nobles 2 (final) -- Junior Keith Veronesi, senior defenseman Justin Agosta, and junior defenseman Dylan Pritchard (shorthanded) scored the Berkshire goals. Senior Zeke Testa got the win in net -- and also got the sole assist on Pritchard's SHG. For Nobles, freshman Andrew Doane and sophomore Billy Arnold scored the goals; junior Mark Hourihan had a pair of assists. If Berkshire can beat Canterbury this evening they will advance to the championship game Saturday.
1:20 pm – Lawrence 5, Pomfret 3 (final) -- With the win, Lawrence Academy clinched first place in their division. Lawrence got goals from freshman Jake Schechter, senior defenseman Andrew Haber, senior Steven Whitney, and senior Wayne Simpson (who actually had two, the latter an empty-netter).
3:30 pm – Cushing 4, Northfield-Mt. Hermon 4 (Cushing wins shootout, 2-1) -- When Cushing went up 4-1 midway through the second period, NMH head coach Tom Pratt called a timeout, rallied the troops, and, by the end of the period, the Hoggers had responded with three goals -- the last a breakaway effort by senior Matt Morin -- to tie the game at 4-4. After a scoreless third period and OT, a shootout was needed to decide things -- and Cushing took that, 2-1. Leading the NMH attack were sophomore Garrett McMullen (1g,1a), junior Nick Gordon (1g,1a), and junior John Sucese (2a). Seniors Neil Lavanchy (3a) and Casey Brugman (2g), and junior Brendan Cocklin (1g,1a) led the way for the Penguins.
5:40 pm – Berkshire 7, Canterbury 1 -- Senior Andrew Flynn had a goal and four assists to lead Berkshire to a 7-1 win and a berth in tomorrow's championship game (3:30 pm) against Lawrence Academy. Sophomore Trevor Mingoia, senior Cam Miller, and juniors Kevin Sullivan, Jake Goldberg, and Keith Veronesi also scored one goal apiece. Junior Connor Wilson picked up the win in net.
7:50 pm – Culver 4, Nobles 2 (final) -- This was a 1-1 game after two periods, with a Jared Lackey powerplay goal putting Nobles up in the first, and Culver's Tony Giacin answering in the second. Culver struck for two goals -- from Dominic Panetta and Kit Sitterley -- to go up 3-1 early in the third period. With 6:08 to go a Billy Arnold unassisted goal gave Nobles life, making it a one-goal game. However, a little over two minutes later, Sitterley scored on the power play for the final 4-2 margin of victory. Culver will meet Cushing in the third place game at 1:20 tomorrow.
