9:00 am -- Williston 4, South Kent 3: Williston jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a slapshot by senior Alex Paolo from the top of the left face off circle, then went up 2-0 when senior Joey Holleran, in the neutral zone, headmanned the puck to senior Tommy Jenkins who cashed in on a breakaway. South Kent senior Joseph Deveny cut it to 2-1, scoring a nice goal on a breakway, deking and going top shelf on Williston junior goaltender Tim Keegan, who had a nice half in net.
In the second half, Williston went up 3-1 oon a wraparound by senior Dan Graham. South Kent made it a one goal game when senior Alexandre Poulin, off a 3x2, went top corner, short side-- nice goal. Williston regained the two-goal lead on a Matt Dupont rebound goal. South Kent cut it to a one-goal lead again, as Sotiri Athanasopoulos scored on a snapshot from the left faceoff circle. South Kent put on a lot of pressure at the end. Willistonsenkor D Michael Grassi had a nice blocked shot in the final second to help preserve the lead.
Though Williston took the game, South Kent set the tempo, moving the puck quickly and efficiently. Their forwards were a little quicker and the D was able to chip in offensively, pushing the tempo from the back end. Willisont's Paolo, South Kent's Deveny, and Williston's Keegan were our three stars in this one.

11:00 am -- Culver 3, Northwood 3: A good game, pretty wide open -- good tempo, with up-and-down action. In the first half, Northwood junior F Tommi Savola roofed a nice backhander glove side to start the scoring. Northwood went up 2-0 when 6'4" senior d-man Travis Jeke cashed in from the high slot. Culver then answered with a couple of their own. First, senior Ryan Barry, from the half wall, found some space on the short side. Then Danish junior Yannick Vedel banged home his own rebound -- give an assist to Kyle Plageman on the play. Northwood went up 3-2 on a goal by Russian senior d-man Vitaliy Zatsepilan (a '94 and normally a forward); an assist went to Savola on the play. Culver tied it up on a goal by senior Austin Surowiec (the nephew of San Jose Sharks director of pro scouting John Ferguson, Jr.). An assist on the play went to James McGing. The goalies in the game were Zac Rondeau for Northwood and Derek Shatzer for Culver, and both played well. Our three stars go to Northwood's Jeke; Culver's Surowiec; and Northwood's Savola. Others who played well were Culver junior forward Michael Bunn, a '94 with nice hands and awareness, and Culver junior F Zach Currier, also a junior (he and Bunn worked well together). Culver's two '95 d-men -- 6'2" Stuart Pomeroy and 5'11" Liam McGing were noticeable as well.

1:00 pm -- Milton 4, NMH 4 -- This game didn't have the tempo or crispness of the preceding game. It looked like both teams had just hit the ice for the first time -- and that's pretty much true, especially for Milton (NMH beat Northwood 5-2 yesterday). So, we'll make this a quick recap. In the first half, Milton, which is really young this year and skating six sophomores and several freshmen, got goals from juniors Jimmy Haddad and Elliott Vorel. NMH got on the board when senior Tim DiPretoro tucked one under the crossbar. In the second half, DiPretoro scored again for NMH; so did junior F Ryan Gouveia and junior D Will Blazer. For Milton, junior D Cole Morrissette scored when senior D Rob O'Gara got the puck out to him at left point. Milton's Anthony Sabitzky, with his team down by a goal and under a minute on the clock, scored the game tying goal, with an assist going to Morrissette. Our three stars: DiPretoro, O'Gara, and Sabitsky.

3:00 pm -- Hill Academy 3, Pomfret 0: Hill Academy (Toronto, Ont.) -- all '95s with the exception of three players -- got a pair of goals from '95 F Brendan Bomberry and one from '94 F Austin Romzek (from Shelby, Mich.) in the 3-0 win. 6'5", 218 lb. goaltender Paolo Battisti, a '95, pickjed up the shutout. Providence recruit Nick Ellis was in net the whole way for Pomfret. This year's Hill Academy team is a little different than last year's in that they don't have a Ryan Lomberg type -- or Devin Shore, for that matter -- to key the attack up front. What they do have, besides the fact that they've been playing together for over two months is a bunch of strong skating forwards who play physically, get in on the D quickly, and have a high enough all-around skill level to make life difficult for opponents (they blanked South Kent yesterday, 3-0, and topped Selects Academy the night before that). Our three stars of the game: Bomberry, Battisti and '94 D Cal Hofford, the son of head coach Lindsay Hofford (and a holdover from last year's squad). Hofford is a 5'10" puck-moving D with quick feet who runs the PP and, for that matter, keys the squad's entire attack. A London (OHL) draft pick, Hofford played in the pre-season for the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers. He'll make a nice Div. I D-man. The best pro prospects on the team were a pair of '95 left shot d-men: 6'3" Kevin Guiltinan and 6'1" Miles Liberati. The former is a little more meat-and-potatoes and the latter has offensive upside. Romzek's goal, which made it 2-0, came off a tip of a shot from the point by Liberati shot, who is from Pittsburgh, PA. Like Hofford, Guiltinan and Liberati are London (OHL) draft picks.

5:00 pm -- Gunnery 7, Cushing 4: This one was a good, high-tempo game -- fun to watch -- between a couple of schools that will contend for the prep crown this season. Early on, Cushing took a 2-0 lead on goals by senior Collin Bourque and new sophomore Shane Eiserman, but before the first half was over Gunnery -- on goals by new soph Laythe Jadallah and senior Jake Wood -- had tied it at 2-2. Early in the second half Gunnery twice took the lead, on goals by junior Marc Cibelli and senior Andrew Graham, only to see Cushing twice answer with tying goals -- from junior Logan Garst and Bourque. However, Cushing, was never able to gain another lead. Midway through the second half, with the game tied at 4-4, Gunnery took over, scoring three quick -- and consecutive -- goals en route to a 7-4 win. Jadallah first, then Wood, then junior Anthony Bird with the game's final tally. Three players had two goals apiece -- Gunnery's Wood, Gunnery soph Laythe Jadallah, and Cushing senior Collin Bourque -- and those are our three stars. Senior Chad Hardy (2 ga) played the first half in net for Cushing; senior Liam Moorfield-Yee (5 ga) played the second half. For Gunnery, junior Anton Frondelius (2 ga) played the first half; junior Dawson Sprigings (2 ga) played the second half. The difference in this game was the fact that Gunnery never took their foot off the gas, never stopped moving their feet -- and goaltending.

7:00 pm -- LI Royals U-16 5, Selects Academy 4: I'm pretty fried after six straight games, so this is going to be very brief. The Royals took a 3-0 lead in the first half on goals by David Kleyman, Zachary Shields, and Joey Fallon. In the second half, Joe Snively and Robert Smiths scored for Selects, cutting the Royals' lead to 3-2. Aidan Salerno made it 4-2 for the Royals. Selects' Anthony Siderio cut it to 4-3. Justin Bailey made it 5-3 Royals, but the Selects' Charles Manley made it a one goal game late. Selects pulled thair goalie and hit a post just before time expired. A good game, and a fine end to a long day. A big thank you to Yale and assistant coach Dan Muse for their hospitality.

Prep Pages Now Open
The ‘11’-12 USHR Prep Pages are now open.
All of last season’s news, schedules, rosters, and stats are archived, and new material can start going in.
The coaches have all their info, and have already started entering schedules into the database. We will keep you up to date on what schedules have been entered.
We’ll be entering in fall and winter tournament schedules starting tomorrow.
You may have noticed that we scratched last year’s seniors from the rosters, but carried over the returnees. This is something new this year. Now, you can see who is left over from last year (note that it was done automatically so kids who left school early still appear). It will also, when the time comes, make it easier for coaches to enter their rosters. A bunch of the names will already be there for them.
Tues. 11/1/11
Welcome to ‘11-12
The '11-12 Prep section is now open – partially, anyway.
The work should be completed sometime tomorrow (Wed.). By then, all of last season’s news, rosters, schedules and stats will be archived, and new material can start going in.
We will be sending coaches the information required in order to upload their schools’ schedules and, in due time, rosters and box scores.
As always, we will be keeping you updated on which schedules are actually up, so you don’t have to go looking for one that has yet to be uploaded.
Welcome to the new season. We're glad to be here. Thank you for your support.
