Teply, Rohlf and the Penalty Killers Come Through for Brunswick
Belmont, Mass. -- A Jakub Teply powerplay goal, off a nice feed from Matt McGroarty at 3:34 of the second period, and a 27-save shutout from junior Alexander Rohlf led Brunswick to a 1-0 win and the championship of the 2019 Nichols-Belmont Hill Tournament.
This was the best prep hockey game this typist has seen so far in '19-20. It was a championship game, for starters, and it was a skating game, with exciting up-and-down action and wide-open play on Belmont Hill's Olympic sheet. There were scoring opportunities galore -- many Grade A -- on both sides. It could have been a 7-6 game -- or more -- but the goaltending -- both Rohlf and Belmont Hill junior Michael Hauswirth -- was excellent.
There were several clean breakaways, and even more partial breakaways. There was a penalty shot. There was physicality. The only negative to the game was the officiating, which was... strange. But it also led to the game's most nerve-racking moments. In the middle of the third, with Brunswick holding a one-goal lead, two Bruins, James Shannon and Teply, were whistled off at the same time, giving their hosts a full two minutes of 5x3 play. Belmont Hill blasted away, but Brunswick players were laying out blocking shots, and Rohlf handled the pucks that got through traffic. But it gets weirder because, several minutes after the 5x3 was killed, and with 3:58 left in the game, yet another Brunswick player, junior AJ Cerbone, was called for hooking. Bel Hill, desperate for a goal, did all they could to get that elusive tying goal. But they couldn't get it, as the Brunswick defensemen once again blocked every puck they could get in front of. There was 1:58 left on the clock when the power play was over. With under a minute left in regulation, Bel Hill pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. But, with 9 seconds left to play, Brunswick was again whistled for a penalty. So Brunswick was facing a 6-on-4 situation with a faceoff to the right of Rohlf. But the 'Wick kept Bel Hill from getting off a clean shot, and, at the buzzer, streamed on to the ice in celebration.
Notes:
After the game, both coaches, knowing a good, hard-fought hockey game when they see one, were pleased. Both teams, it should be noted, are following similar trajectories. Belmont Hill started the season with three losses, but went into today's game on a 6-0-1 unbeaten streak (5-0-1 in NEPSIHA play).
Brunswick lost its first two games of the season, but entered play today on a 9-1-1 run (7-1-1 in NEPSIHA).

Midway through the game. Brunswick had a 5-1 lead and had chased Millbrook's starting goalie. But Millbrook came back, tying it at 5-5 on senior D Bauer Morrissey's shot from the left point with 12.5 seconds left in regulation with the goalie pulled, and on the PP as well. Brunswick, however, won it 1:12 into OT when Matt McGroarty, on a 2-on-1, scored off a perfect pass from linemate Andon Cerbone.
3:00 pm -- Rivers 1, St. Francis 0
Soph Mel Mortareilli scored early in the second and senior Casen Janko posted a 15-save shutout. St. Francis goalie Mitch Taylor (29/30) was excellent in defeat.

Salisbury Repeats at the Flood-Marr
Milton, Mass. -- Salisbury senior forward -- and Tournament MVP -- Michael Fairfax scored two goals and added an assist to help lead the Crimson Knights to their second consecutive Flood-Marr Championship with a 4-1 win over Hotchkiss here on Sunday.
Hotchkiss came out of the gate hard, pressuring Salisbury and getting off a lot of shots on Salisbury senior goaltender Nick Haas, who was kept busy holding off Hotchkiss until Salisbury's offense found its groove.
It took a while, but Salisbury senior forward James Cerepak broke the scoreless tie with 5:01 left in the period, curling around the net and stuffing a wraparound past Hotchkiss senior goalie Henry Wilder to make it 1-0. Fairfax had the assist on the goal.
Early in the second, just 1:09 in, Salisbury center Lucas Mercuri streaked down the left side and beat Wilder top shelf to make it 2-0. Four minutes later, Hotchkiss soph Karsen Dorwart, from the top of the crease, banged home a perfect pass from junior Boldie Molnar, who was stationed out at the right faceoff dot. That cut Salisbury's lead to 2-1.
With Hotchkiss d-man Jack Ferguson off for holding, Fairfax, from behind the goal line, made a nice pass out front to Mercuri to extend Salisbury's lead to 3-1 at the second intermission.
Fairfax scored the only goal of the third, barrelling down the slot and -- great release -- fired a shot past Wilder with 4:09 left to make it 4-1, the final margin of victory.
After the game, Salisbury head coach Andrew Will spoke of Haas and Fairfax.
"Nick Haas was terrific for us," Salisbury head coach Andrew Will said. "In the first period they outshot us and outchanced us. And even though we got that first goal, we hadn't really settled down. Nick did that, gave us a lot of confidence back there that allowed us to find our stride and get into our game."
"Michael Fairfax was very good all weekend," Will added. "He's a big kid and he skates so well. He's strong on the puck. He's also so responsible defensively. I just thought he really put everything together."
Salisbury had a funny sort of weekend. They started out by beating KUA, 4-2, exploding for three late goals. But in their nightcap Friday, Salisbury held a two-goal lead over Deerfield, but couldn't hold it, as the Big Green scored two unanswered third period goals en route to a 4-4 tie. On Saturday, Salisbury had a third-period lead over Milton, but allowed the Mustangs to come back and force OT, where Dean Bauchiero's goal bailed them out.
"Getting that first goal and playing with the lead was something we wanted to do," Will said. "We were more confident and assertive. We were not playing out the clock, as I think we did in the previous two games."
Hotchkiss head coach Mike Traggio said, "I thought they played better than we did. We did some good things, but they competed harder. I don't think we competed hard enough and consistently enough to give us a chance to win."
"They had chances to score, and did. We had chances to score, and didn't."
"I think the kids played well in this tournament, Traggio added. "And that's exciting. It's a little disappointing to lose today, but it's not quite so bad when you lose to a good team."

First USHR Prep Poll of the Season
The season's first poll always comes days before the Christmas tournaments begin, when the sample size is still quite small.
It's crazy. Case in point: the teams in this week's poll go into Wednesday's games with a collective record of 42-3. There has been only one game in which teams ranked in today's poll have faced each other.
The next poll will be posted on the week of January 6th, after the Christmas and New Year's tournaments, when teams' sample sizes are larger, and there have been some head-to-head matchups.
At the end of last season, we analyzed the polls, and saw that Salisbury took over the #1 spot in the second USHR poll, after the Christmas and New Year's tournaments, and held onto it ever since. Eight straight weeks.
Of the 10 teams in that final poll, we looked back to see how many were also ranked in the season's first poll.
There were only four teams that made it through to the final Top 10.
But in the first poll after the Xmas/New Year's tournaments, seven of the top 10 teams made it through to the last poll. Of course, there had been plenty of movement in between. Here's how it went the rest of the way:
Jan. 7th (after the Xmas/New Year's tournaments): 7 teams
Jan. 14th: 9 teams
Jan. 21st: 9 teams
Jan. 28th: 8 teams
Feb. 4th: 10 teams (!)
Feb. 11th: 9 teams
Last year felt like a bit of an outlier. Most years feature more volatility. Still, it shows how important early-season games can be, and how difficult it can be to overcome December losses.
There's always a team that just misses the Elite 8 by the slimmest of margins -- and there's always at least one game they can point to as the reason why. The one they let get away.
And tournaments are especially hazardous. It's hard to win four games in three days.

Connors Lifts Seb's Past Exeter
Needham, Mass. -- A Liam Connors goal midway through the third period was all the scoring St. Sebastian's (4-0-0) needed in a 1-0 win over Exeter here today.
That Exeter was in this game at all was a testament to senior goalie Ryan Welch, who stopped 41 of the 42 shots he faced.
This was one of those games in which the winning goaltender -- in this case Seb's senior Luke Garrity -- did all he was expected to do, posting a 16-save shutout, but still had to take second billing.
For the first half of the first period, Exeter suffered from severe bus legs -- or simply general lassitude. It looked as if Seb's was on an interminable power play. Exeter couldn't get the puck out of their end, and the Arrows buzzed freely around the net, but, thanks to Welch, had nothing to show for it other than some skilled puck possession, accurate passes, and team speed.
In the latter half of the period, Exeter was able to clear its zone better, but continued to have trouble farther up the ice. They did have one good opportunity, as Garrity was forced to come up big on junior Michael Young, Exeter's top line center. Seb's junior d-man Thomas Messineo hit a post. Seb's junior forward Brendan Dumas slipped between a pair of Exeter d-men in front for a dangerous opportunity turned back by Welch.
In the second, the ice was not as severly tilted, but Seb's controlled most of the play.
In the first minute of the third, Connors hit a post. But roughly 7 minutes later, Connors, with his team maintaining pressure, curled out around the top of the zone and let loose with a high wrister that clanged off the crossbar -- and in.
Exeter brought some heavy pressure late, and pulled Welch as time wore down. As Exeter pressured Seb's in desperation time, Arrows' senior goaltender Luke Garrity made some nice saves to seal the win.
"I like our speed," said St. Seb's head coach Sean McCann. "I think we can really move and when we're unselfish with the puck it allows us to play at the pace we want."
"We're coming," McCann added. "I think the chemistry has to be better once in a while, but they play for each other, which is great. Our captains -- Liam Connors, Connor Joyce, and Ryan McDermott -- are hardworking and very passionate, and the other guys feed off that."
Outside the visitors' locker room, Exeter head coach Dana Barbin said, "Ryan Welch was our best player today. But I also liked the way our D dug in and blocked shots. Seb's is fast, skillful and very good."
"It's too bad we couldn't pop one."

St. Mark's 4 @ Brooks 0 -- Junior Jackson Coutu notched a hat trick, and senior Danny Ciccarello had a goal and 2 assists to lead the Lions' offense. Goaltenders Will Bundy (18/18) and Adam Becht (3/3) combined for the shutout. St. Mark's is now 5-0-0.

@ Hebron 4, Portsmouth Abbey 3 -- Playing their second game of the day in Maine (at two different rinks), PA led 2-0 before fading and giving up 4 of the next 5 goals.
@ Gunnery 4, Williston 1 -- Senior Dane Dowiak (2g, 1a) led Gunnery scorers, and senior G Carmine Andranovich (24/25) took care of business as Gunnery (4-2-0) bounced back from two consecutive one-sided losses.
@ Andover 6, Brewster 1 -- Senior D Ray Galasso (2g,1a) and junior Chris Hocevar (2g,1a) led the Big Blue scorers, and sophomore Shane Shelest (32/33) was strong in his first start in goal. Andover improves to 3-2 on the season.
@ Salisbury 4, Kent 3 -- Senior D Jarod Crespo (2g,1a), and senior forwards Lucas Mercuri (1g,2a) and Jake Quillan (3a) led the Salisbury offense. Since a season-opening loss at Taft, Salisbury has won 4 straight.
@ Deerfield 4, Choate 2 -- Big Green senior forward Jarod Harrington, in his fourth season at the school and in his 76th career game, scored his first two career goals. (Never mind that the second goal was an empty-netter.) Deerfield outshot Choate, 30-20. Deerfield '04 freshman goaltender Justin Katz (18/20) and Choate senior Justin Dunne (27/30) had solid games.
Pomfret 4 @ Pingree 0 -- Pomfret got a 28-save shutout from sophomore G Kellen Beauton and a pair of goals from senior Tyler Mitchell. Pingree junior G Cam Brown (47/51) did all he could to give his team a chance. Pomfret improves to 5-1-0.

@ Governor's 3, Milton 3 -- A lot of symmetry here: Milton scored 3 straight goals, and Gov's came back with 3 of its own.
Loomis 3 @ Canterbury 2 (OT) -- An OT goal from Loomis junior D Cam Partridge allowed the Pelicans to remain undefeated at 5-0-0 (in NEPSIHA play). Loomis junior G Kyle Chauvette (18/20) got the win; Canterbury senior Cal Skwara (32/35) took a tough-luck loss.
@ Holderness 11, Vermont Academy 1 -- After allowing 2 goals in each of the first 2 periods, Holderness exploded for 7 in the final period. Eric Chamandy (3g,1a), Matt Dubois (2g,1a), Jeremi Tremblay (2g,1a), and Thomas Denis (1g,2a) led the Bulls attack. Holderness outshot VA, 51-8. These are two teams heading in opposite directions. Holderness is 5-0-0, while Vermont Academy is 0-6-0 and has been outscored by a whopping 38-1 over its last 4 games. That's pretty much the definition of demoralizing.
Bishop's College 5 @ Stanstead College 2 -- The Bears of Bishop's got 2 goals apiece from junior Adam Skara and senior Jesse Johnson. Junior G Sasha Gaumond (28/30) earned the win.
Fri. 12/13/19
Kent's Second-Period Onslaught Stuns Gunnery
Kent, Conn. – Following a close first period, host Kent came out on fire in the second, scoring five unanswered goals in Friday's 8-1 win over a Gunnery team that failed to match Kent’s speed, physicality, and depth during the final 36 minutes of play. Team Captain Aidan Cobb (1g, 3a) and junior forward Cole Watson, with a hat trick, led the attack for Kent. Junior goaltender Jeremy Siegel kicked out 21 of the 22 shots he faced for the win.
Coming into the contest, we anticipated an even game between rival teams. And the first period was just that, with up-and-down action. Kent drew first blood on a 5-on-3 power play at 3:14, with Watson deflecting a point shot off the stick of PG defenseman Simon Mandel. After Watson's first tally of the evening, both goalies -- Gunnery senior goalie Carmine Andranovich and Kent's Siegel -- were kept busy in their respective nets as the teams exchanged scoring chances in fast-paced, exciting action.
For Gunnery, it was Alex Jefferies, the Highlanders' leading scorer and Merrimack commit, pacing the offense. Jefferies, from Lunenburg, Mass., was noticeable whenever he touched the puck. The 6'0" winger used his explosive stride and smart decision-making with the puck to create several scoring opportunities during the first 18 minutes of play. His best move, with just over a minute remaining in the period, came on a short-handed breakaway in which he deked Siegel on a nifty move but hit the post on a backhand shot -- with two feet of open net. It appeared that Jefferies would have scored but for a slash to his top hand/elbow by Kent defender Nick Marciano, who had no choice but to take the penalty in order to prevent a near-certain Jefferies goal.
Cornell commit Cobb, though smaller and a year younger than Jefferies, was equally effective at pushing the pace for Kent. The dynamic Cobb, listed at 5’ 8”, used his speed, shiftiness, and vision to create plays for Kent’s top line, on which he played the left side. That all-senior line, which also had Jason Kleinhans on the right and senior Tommy Raith in the middle, produced Kent’s best scoring opportunities.
At the end of the first, Kent led 1-0.
We don’t know what was said in the locker rooms between periods, but the game changed markedly for both teams after the puck drop for the second. It was like A Tale of Two Games. Gunnery seemed to lose its footing in the second period. Kent seemingly gained more speed.
Kent’s flurry of goals began at 3:14, when senior forward AJ von Brauchitsch scored off a rebound. Less than a
minute later, Cobb scored on a breakaway when Gunnery was caught in an untimely defensive change. Cobb made a quick backhand-forehand move as he went in alone on Andranovich, beating him stick side. Fifty-six seconds later, Watson tallied his second goal of the game, a rebound shot to give Kent a 4-0 lead. Less than two minutes after Watson’s goal, senior Tommy Raith made it 5-0 on a nice zone entry with linemates Cobb and Kleinhans, who both picked up assists. Raith scored Kent’s fifth goal of the period, with Kleinhans and Cobb assisting. A stunned Gunnery team left the ice trailing,6-0.
On a power play early in the third, Jefferies scored Gunnery's lone goal. Kent added two more, from Matthew Perryman and Watson, for the 8-2 final.
After the game we caught up with Kent head coach Dale Reinhardt to ask him what sparked his team in the second period. Reinhardt credited his players with sticking to the team’s structure, which allowed them to cash in on transition goals several times. This was consistent with what we saw, as four out of the five second-period goals came off odd-man rushes in which Kent had speed and numbers through the neutral zone. In the middle period, Kent took advantage of what we would characterize as Gunnery’s high-risk, high-reward style of play -- and they never looked back.
Notes:
-- As the home team, Kent had the benefit of having the last change after stops in play, which allowed them to match lines against Gunnery. Senior Kent defensemen Matthew Perryman and junior Finn Martin were consistently paired against Jefferies’ line. The duo did an excellent job in taking away Jefferies’ time and space throughout the game. Coach Reinhardt noted that Perryman has made significant strides in his game over the past 12 months, becoming stronger and more assertive at both ends of the ice. Junior goalie John Blair, from East Islip, NY, relieved Andranovich for Gunnery when the score reached 6-0. Blair made some nice stops in his first game action for the Gunnery
-- Gunnery showed its frustration in the third period with a few undisciplined penalties. Senior forward Dane Dowiak, who played last season for Kent and transferred to Gunnery for this season, was tossed from the game by the referees with 9:51 remaining. A Gunnery coach was also ejected following a heated discussion with one of the referees after a call went against a Gunnery player for charging. And, with 36 seconds remaining in the game, Jefferies was ejected after cross-checking Kwiecinski in front of the Kent net. He will miss Gunnery's next game.
Kwiecinski kept his composure and did not retaliate.
-- Kent, the Large School Champions last season, lost leading scorers Alex Laferriere (19g,34a) and Michael Posma (21g, 25a), who are both in the USHL now. With the benefit of a few talented newcomers and the return of a solid core of players, however, coach Reinhardt’s team looks poised to make another playoff run this season.
-- Both Kent and Gunnery entered the game following lopsided losses Wednesday. Kent, which upset defending prep champions Kimball Union, 5-2, last Sunday, followed that high point with a 6-0 loss to Brunswick on Wednesday. Gunnery lost to Berkshire, 5-1. Gunnery takes on Williston at home Saturday (6:00 pm), while Kent travels to Salisbury for a 7:00 pm start.

Prep Highlights for Wed. December 11th, 2019
Simeone, Portsmouth Abbey End 31-game Winless Streak
Yarmouth, Maine -- The longest winless streak in prep hockey came to an end today as Portsmouth Abbey edged North Yarmouth Academy, 4-3 in OT, breaking a 31-game winless streak (0-30-1) that stretched back to Jan. 20, 2018. Senior F Dean Simeone capped off his hat trick with the OT game-winner, while repeat junior G Nate Hopkins (35/38), a transfer from Bishop Hendricken, earned the win.
After NYA's Jared Buckner scored a shorthanded goal 31 seconds into the second period to put the hosts up 2-0, the Abbey picked it up a notch. Senior F Will Crowley -- one of the team's four captains -- beat NYA goalie Nathan Loisel (30/34) 5-hole to make it a one-goal game. Simeone -- also a senior team captain -- followed it up with a one-timer from the slot, tying the game at 2-2. Assists went to juniors Alex Leef and Markus Keller.
Simeone's second goal of the game came less than two minutes later, at 11:54, and it was an unassisted goal as Simeone chipped the puck past a NYA defenseman, and moved in on a breakaway, beating Loisel glove side to give the Abbey a 3-2 lead they'd take into the second intermission.
NYA tied it up at 3-3 with the only goal of the third period as Jonathan Heise, a PG from St. Laurent, Quebec, scored on the PP, deflecting home Mason Park's half pass/half shot from the point at 7:33.
Overtime was brief, Simeone again cashing in on a breakaway, beating Loisel stick side, about a foot off the ice, 24 seconds in.
And that was it. The winless streak is over.
"NYA is one of the better teams we play," said PA fourth-year head coach Allie Skelley, "and our guys just battled."
"This is a good group of guys. Team-first guys. We have four great senior captains (Simeone, Crowley, forward Ryan Tarmey, and defenseman Josh Plumb), and they've had their noses rubbed in it."
"(Simeone) is one of those guys, added Skelley. "He's quiet, and he leads by example. He's been here four years. He has skill, but he's been snakebit. He certainly found the back of the net today."

@ Berkshire 5, Gunnery 1 -- Down 1-0 late in the first period, Berkshire exploded for 5 unanswered goals -- 2 apiece from seniors Briggs Gammill and Aidan Thompson -- who both had 2 assists as well -- and a singleton from Jack Bavis. Berkshire junior goaltender Jed Balliotti (18/19) earned the win; Gunnery senior Carmine Andranovich (15/20) took the loss. Berkshire is 3-0 on the young season; Gunnery falls to 3-1.
@ Avon 7, Taft 4 -- Sophomore F Liam Verdoni had a hat trick, and junior Brendan Williams (1g,2a) had 3 points to lead host Avon, now 3-0, past Taft, whose only win in their first four games was a 3-2 decision over Salisbury.
@ Middlesex 5, Brooks 4 (OT) -- This one was tied up several times, but it was Middlesex soph Henry Cohen who came through in OT. Assist on the GWG, which came at 3:51, goes to senior Kevin Campbell. Middlesex outshot Brooks, 39-24. Both teams are now 2-1-0.
Brunswick 6 @ Kent 0 -- Three days after topping KUA at the Exeter Tournament, Kent came up with a goose egg at home against Brunswick, thus taking their first loss of the season. The visitors came out with purpose, putting themselves up, 4-0, midway through the first period. Junior F Michael Salandra (2g,2a) led Brunswick scorers with 4 points. Junior G Alexander Rohlf (25/25) earned the shutout win. Brunswick is 2-2-1.
Westminster 6 @ Choate 3 -- Choate held a 3-2 lead after one period, but the visitors from Westminster scored four unanswered goals in the second, two from senior Wyatt Pastor (who also had 3 assists). Westminster outshot the Wild Boars, 40-18.
Pingree 5 @ Berwick 4 (OT) -- Ian Driscoll's second goal of the game, at 3:28 of OT, gave Pingree their first win of the season. Juniors Hazen Pike (2g,2a) and Brendan Driscoll (3a) also came through for Pingree, now 1-4-0.
@ Salisbury 2, Hotchkiss 0 -- Goals from Matt DeBoer and Tommy Rooney provided all the offense the Crimson Knights needed. Max Donoso, Salisbury's new junior goaltender, picked up a 20-save shutout. Hotchkiss senior goaltender Henry Wilder, now in his fourth season with the Bearcats, was the tough luck loser, stopping 35 of the 37 shots he faced. Salisbury is now 3-1; Hotchkiss falls to 2-2.
Cushing 4 @ Williston Northampton 3 -- After Max Dorrington's second goal of the first period, Cushing held a 3-0 lead, but Williston rebounded in the second period with powerplay goals 21 seconds apart to cut the Penguins' lead to one. Each team scored a goal in the third. Cushing freshman goalie Jackson Irving (33/36) picked up the win. Williston outshot Cushing, 36-28. Cushing improves to 3-1-1 while Williston falls to 0-3-0.
@ Rivers 4, St. George's 0 -- Junior F Will Conway had a hat trick, and sophomore G Conor Sullivan (20/20) picked up the shutout. There were 20 minors in this game, 12 against Rivers and 8 against the Dragons. All 4 goals were either 4x4 or 5x4. The win was the first in the year for Rivers (1-2). St. George's drops to 1-3-0.
Dexter 5 @ Exeter 1 -- Doug Grimes (1g,1a), Aidan Connolly (1g,1a), and Michael Adamson (2a) led the Dexter scorers while freshman goaltender Dylan Silverstein (16/17) earned the win in net. Dexter remains undefeated at 4-0; Exeter drops to 5-2-1.
@ Trinity-Pawling 5, Albany Academy 3 -- T-P got goals from 5 different scorers, and junior G Cam Carroll (15/18) got the win in net. Albany junior G Andrew Palena (54/59) was the hard-luck loser.
Governor's 3, Belmont Hill 1 -- A third-period SHG from junior Aaron Mulligan proved to be the difference here today, giving the Governors a 2-1 lead with 5:02 left. Owen Fowler would make it 3-1 with an ENG. Goalie Tristan Mecenas, a 6'4" new junior at the school, kicked out 35 of 36 shots for the win. Bel Hill junior G Charlie Lambert (23/25) took the tough loss. Governors improves to 3-2-0; Belmont Hill drops to 0-2-0.
@ Kimball Union 5, Proctor 0 -- KUA senior G Veeti Kohvakka notched the 24-save shutout, and seniors Sullivan Mack (2g,2a), Tomas Mazura (2g,1a), and Teddy Griffin (2a) each had multiple points for the Wildcats. KUA improves to 4-1-0 in NEPSIHA play; Proctor falls to 2-2-0.
St. Mark's 6, Worcester Academy 3 -- Junior Brendan Gibbons (2g,1a), senior Danny Ciccarello (1g,2a), and junior D Ian Moore (3a) led the St. Mark's scorers with 3 points apiece. Senior G Will Bundy (18/21) picked up the win for the Lions. Worcester junior Jack Byrne (59/64) took a hard-luck loss. St. Mark's is 3-0; Worcester drops to 0-2.
@ NMH 1, Deerfield 1 -- This one was a battle of goalies, with Deerfield freshman G Justin Katz (28/29) and NMH senior G Connor Hasley (29/30) each coming up big. Joe Solomine (NMH) and Drew Garzone (Deerfield) provided the goals.
Loomis 2 @ Pomfret 1-- Another battle of goalies. New Loomis soph G Ethan Roberts (31/32) earned the win, while Pomfret PG Andrew Shearson (30/32) took the loss. Loomis goals were scored by senior D Kennedy O'Connor and senior F Cody Hoban. Pomfret PG forward Jake Hughes scored the Griffins' lone goal. Loomis (4-0-0) is undefeated in NEPSIHA play. Pomfret drops to 3-1-0.
St. Sebastian's 9 @ BB&N 0 -- Timmy Delay (1g,3a), Joe Harney (2g,1a) and Michael Callow (3a) led the Arrows' scorers.
@ Lawrenceville 3, Hill 1 -- Senior F Trey Croddick's second period goal turned out to be the game-winner. Croddick also assisted on the first L'ville goal. Tait Mott had 2 goals, the second one an ENG.
The goalies were the story, though. Both L'ville senior TJ Semptimphelter (28/29) and Hill senior Sean Parker (24/26) were on their game.
@ New Hampton 5, Tilton 5 -- Both goalies, senior Justin Lee (Tilton) and PG Robbie Farrell (New Hampton) finished with 35 saves on 40 shots. Top scorers were PGs Maxwell Cocchi (1g,3a) and Jon Tavella (3a) for Tilton, and senior Jack Ring (3a) for New Hampton. Tilton stays undefeated at 3-0-1. New Hampton falls to 1-3-1, but has played a tough early-season schedule.
St. Paul's 5 @ Vermont Academy 0 -- SPS got goals from 5 different player, and senior G Charlie Murphy (14 saves) and freshman Rocco Bryant (1 save) combined for the shutout. Vermont junior Mason Kucenski (57/62) did a good job, but was nonetheless tagged for the loss .
@ Holderness 5, Brewster 0 -- New sophomore Jeremi Tremblay (3g,1a) figured in 4 of the 5 Holderness goals, and new junior Aiden Belt posted a 27-save shutout. The Bulls are 4-0-0; Brewster drops to 2-5-0.
@ Noble & Greenough 4, Tabor 1 -- Senior G Marc Smith (27/28) had a strong game in the Nobles' net, and seniors Jack Cronin (2g) and Casey Severo (1g,1a), and junior David Jacobs (2a) led the scorers. Senior G Brandon Sherman (28/32) took the loss for the Seawolves.
Lawrence Academy 6 @ Milton 0 -- Senior G Brandon Milberg posted a 17-save shutout. Junior D Damien Carfanga had 2 goals. Junior F David Sacco and junior D Kyle Furey each had 3 assists.
@ Winchendon 8, Hoosac 3 -- Senior F Danny Cavanagh notched a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Wapitis. In addition, junior forwards Nolan McDonough (1g,2a) and Jake Black (2g), as well as junior d-men Will Cohen (5a) and Matt Gallagher (3a) had big days. Hoosac was led by PG Noah Patry-Dontigny (2g,1a), who figured in Hoosac's goals, all of which came in the third period against Winchendon senior G Max Caouette (24/27) .

-- Nobles scores 3 Late Goals, Stunning Belmont Hil in OT
Belmont, Mass. -- Belmont Hill raced out to first period leads of 3-0 and 4-1, but failed to stop Nobles, as the visitors battled back with two in the second and two in the third to send it to OT, where Nobles needed only 13 seconds to end it, as Casey Severo deflected an Aidan Lyons shot from the point to give the visitors a 6-5 win in an intense, physical, and exciting game.
Although Nobles had momentum through much of the final two periods, they trailed 5-3 as the clock wound down to the final minutes. With senior goalie Marc Smith pulled for the extra attacker, Nobles' senior forward Owen O'Connor scored with 1:24 left. Then they did it again. This time it was David Jacobs scoring with 41 seconds left to tie the game at 5-5 and send it to OT, where the Bulldogs quickly completed the comeback
In less than two minutes the visitors had scored three unanswered goals, leaving Belmont Hill supporters stunned.
This was a strange, wild game indeed. In addition to the come-from-behind win, Nobles had to overcome some dubious officiating that lent the game a general chippiness. Nobles was called for 8 penalties to Bel Hill's 3.
Entering the third, Nobles was trailing 4-3, yet working hard. As the clock ticked down to under five minutes remaining, Nobles was assessed a pair of slashing penalties 32 seconds apart that gave the Hillies a 5x3 advantage for 1:28. The second call was especially poor, as Nobles D Colby Bailey was whistled off after giving little more than a tap to the left shinpad of a BH player carrying the puck out of his end. Nobles head coach Brian Day was beside himself, and with good reason -- as the penalty time ran down, Belmont Hill sophomore forward Drew Blackwell scored, making it 5-3 with 2:44 remaining in regulation. For Nobles fans, things looked bleak.
But they had a little miracle left in them and, with 1:24 on the clock and junior goalie Marc Smith pulled for the extra attacker, Nobles senior F Owen O'Connor scored, from Lyons and Robert Lapsley. The Belmont Hill lead was now 5-4.
Then, with 41.7 seconds left, and the Nobles net again empty, Nobles junior forward David Jacobs, from a scrum in front of Bel Hill junior goalie Michael Hauswirth, spotted the puck sitting tantalizingly close to the goal line. Jacobs just nudged it over the line, making it 5-5, and stunning the home fans.
The game went to OT and, with momentum on their side, it took only 13 seconds for Nobles to win it, stunning the Belmont Hill supporters.
"We were two teams today," said Nobles head coach Brian Day. "One of the teams played with no sense of urgency. The other, which you saw in the second and third periods, was the total opposite, playing with urgency and commitment. Our goalie rebounded and our PK was excellent."
"This was a character builder for us," Day added. "Hopefully, we can draw on it over the course of the season."
"Nobles is a good team," Bel Hill head coach Jeremiah McCarthy said. "They kept their composure and kept coming at us."
"We're young," McCarthy added. "I was excited about what we showed despite the outcome."
Back in the first period, after an unassisted goal from Belmont Hill junior Kevin McCallum at 1:24, and a pair of goals from junior Ryan McGuire had made it 3-0, Nobles head coach Brian Day called a timeout. It appeared to have a salutary effect, as less than two minutes later defenseman Robert Lapsley got Nobles on the board. However, Nobles gave it right back, giving up a goal to senior F Zephan Kraus. Luke Khozozian had an assist on the goal.
Shots were pretty even. Nobles senior goalie Marc Smith faced 34 shots; Belmont Hill goalie Michael Hauswirth, also a junior, faced 33.
Notes:
-- McGuire, Belmont Hill's leading returning scorer (11-18-29 in 30 games as a freshman last year), is centering the top line this year, between seniors Luke Khozozian and Zephan Kraus. McGuire, the son of Pierre McGuire, has grown significantly since the end of last season -- he's listed as 6'2" -- and his time spent working out with the Fusco brothers is paying huge dividends. He was Belmont Hill's best player today, scoring a pair of first period goals. He's an excellent DI prospect.
-- Belmont Hill is rostering 4 freshmen and 9 sophomores. Most of their d-men are underclassmen. The '03s -- Will Killoran, Thomas Goguen, and Tyler Rubin -- have taken huge jumps since last year. We also see a lot of upside in '04 D Matt Biotti. He's the son of Jon Biotti and nephew of Chris Biotti. Both played at Belmont Hill and Harvard in the '80s.
-- Nobles freshman LW Ben MacDonald, an '04, was impressive today. He has poise, hockey sense, and hands. He's the son of Lane MacDonald, a Hobey Baker Award winner and U.S. Olympian who helped lead Harvard to an NCAA championship in '88-'89 and was as swift a skater as this typist has ever seen. Ben is also the grandson of Lowell MacDonald, who played in the NHL with Detroit, LA, and Pittsburgh.
-- Nobles sophomore D Aidan Lyons assisted on the last 3 Nobles goals and, along with senior F Casey Severo, was key to the Noble's third period surge.
-- As we mentioned above, Nobles was assessed 8 minors to Belmont Hill's 3. Noble's penalty killers were the unsung heroes in Noble's comeback.

Roxbury Latin Prevails, 3-1, in Opener at St. George’s
Middletown, RI -- Team captain Joey Ryan (2g,1a) figured in all three of his team’s goals, and senior goaltender Mikey Jones kicked out all but one of the shots he faced to give Roxbury Latin a 3-1 road win in their season opener Friday at St. George’s.
Ryan lit the lamp for the Foxes five minutes into the first period on a 2v2 zone entry with Frankie Lonergan, a junior from Cambridge, Mass. Lonergan crossed the St. George’s blue line with the puck, dropped it to the trailing Ryan, who found enough open ice between the St. George’s defenders for a clean shot over the shoulder of junior goalie Colin Freitas.
Roxbury Latin maintained its 1-0 lead through the end of the first period despite taking three penalties, two of which overlapped for a minute-long 5-on-3 in favor of the Dragons. Credit on the penalty kill went to RL goalie Jones, who was the Foxes’ best penalty killer throughout the game. Jones doesn’t take up a lot of space in the net, but what he lacks in size he more than makes up for in his positioning in the crease, his poise under pressure, and a high compete level. In addition, RL defensemen Conner Berg and Peter Frates were strong on the penalty kills, winning puck battles and clearing pucks from their zone.
The teams traded chances over the course of the first 10 minutes of the second period, with St. George’s having more offensive zone time than Roxbury Latin. The Dragons’ top scorers from last season, B. Jenkinson (21g, 27a) and Michael Dimascolo (18g, 19a), pushed the pace for St. George’s during this stretch, but Roxbury Latin was disciplined in their defensive zone coverage, effectively chipping pucks out of their zone when under pressure. This made it difficult for either of St. George’s top guns to find enough space for quality scoring opportunities. Finally, with 7:37 remaining in the second, the Dragons evened the score at 1-1 when DiMascolo lifted a well-placed shot over the shoulder of Jones. The goal was the result of sustained pressure by St. George’s, something that, until this point, had eluded the Dragons.
With 3:22 remaining in the second, Roxbury Latin went on the power play, quickly gaining possession of the puck off the face-off, then moving it around the perimeter of the Dragons’ defensive box. Half a minute into the power play, Roxbury Latin’s puck movement opened a seam in the slot, where the puck made its way onto the stick of sophomore Jojo Dable, who quickly fired on net. Freitas made a nice save, but the rebound deflected off of a St. George’s defender into the goal, giving the Foxes a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
It would prove to be the game-winning goal.
At the start of the third, Jones was faced with an equipment issue, which required coach
Cataruzolo to put in a new goaltender. Junior Nolan McKenna from got the nod while Jones worked to repair his equipment. McKenna, coming in cold and making his first prep appearance in a 2-1 game. If he was nervous, he didn’t show it, making several key saves until Jones fixed his equipment and returned to the crease. After the game, Cataruzolo said he felt McKenna’s short time in net was a turning point, giving his teammates an additional shot of motivation.
The lone goal in the third came off the stick of Ryan, his second of the game, and it gave Roxbury Latin a 3-1 lead. Junior Bobby Luca, a speedy and skilled forward from Milton, Mass., made a nice feed to the slot, and Ryan converted to give the Foxes an insurance goal. The Foxes held the lead even though they were penalized for the last 3:30 of the game.
Cataruzolo said was “pleased with the effort” of his players this early in the season. They won because, he said, “they played as a team and for each other.”
Notes:
-- Joey Ryan is a baseball recruit who will head to Boston College next fall.
-- St. George’s and Roxbury Latin will face off again in February, at West Roxbury.

St. Mark’s Edges Groton, 7-6, in Barn Burner
Groton, Mass. – A Trevor O’Brien shorthanded goal midway through the third period lifted St. Mark’s to a 7-6 road win over rival Groton Wednesday afternoon.
O’Brien’s goal, his second of the game, was assisted on by defenseman Tucker Hartmann -- his fourth helper of the day -- and put a ribbon on a game that featured a half dozen lead changes, fast-paced play, plenty of action, and a come-from-behind win. We couldn’t have asked for more from an early-season game between the two rivals.
St. Mark’s, the better team for most of the game, found themselves down by a goal at both the first and second intermissions, but scored three of the game’s four third-period tallies to put this one, their season opener, in the win column.
Both goalies – Groton senior Kevin Clark, from Manchester, Mass., and St. Mark’s senior Will Bundy, a Westport, Conn. native – played better than the final score would indicate. Many of the goals were either on screens or rebounds.
“There was so much pressure put on both goalies early,” said St. Mark’s coach Carl Corazzini. “They were a little overwhelmed.”
St. Mark’s stellar junior defenseman Ian Moore, a Harvard recruit, opened the scoring with a power play goal early in the first, firing a shot from the top of the umbrella, through traffic, and into the top corner. Groton tied the game at 1-1 minutes later, taking advantage of a bad defensive decision by St. Mark’s that led to a breakaway for forward Colin Rosato, who was denied by Bundy, but Ronan Doherty, alertly following the play, banged home the rebound.
Groton took the game’s first lead, 2-1, halfway through the first when Luke Beckstein chipped the puck out of the Zebras’ zone to senior forward Marc Borghi, who skated the puck through the neutral zone to the top of the circle. Borghi’s initial shot was stopped. But the rebound struck a St. Mark’s defender and ended up in the back of the net.
St. Mark’s tied the game moments later on another power play goal, this time from senior Danny Ciccarello. The Quebec native – St. Mark’s leading scorer last season and their top forward Wednesday – tied the game at 2-2 with 2:42 left in the first.
In the final minute of the period Groton, on a hard Max Noll shot from the slot following an errant breakout pass by St. Mark’s, took a 3-2 lead.
O’Brien, at 3:46 of the second, tied the game at 3-3 when, off a 2-on-1 zone entry, he converted a nice back door saucer pass from Ciccarello.
Later in the second, at 13:39, Groton retook the lead, 4-3, on a power play goal from senior Gabriel Lamothe. But less than a minute later, St. Mark’s tied the score again, 4-4, on a rebound knocked out of the air by sophomore Dom Murphy. It would not last, as Groton came right back and, with 12 seconds on the clock, took a 5-4 lead on an Aidan Garcia goal, sophomore D Bryan McLachlan getting an assist.
Not to be outdone, St. Mark’s came out strong in the third and took a 6-5 lead on consecutive goals from sophomore Eamon Connaughton and junior Brendan Gibbons. But the lead change did not deter Groton, as sophomore Wes Turner tied the game at 6-6 with a power play goal at the 6:52 mark, assisted by McLachlan. The tie would not last for even two minutes, however, as O’Brien came up with the game-winner at the 8:29 mark, knocking a rebound out of the air for St. Mark’s seventh and final goal, much to the chagrin of the home fans, who felt it was a high stick. Groton had chances to tie the game after pulling their goalie, but Bundy and the Lions’ defenders prevailed with key saves and blocks to eke out the 7-6 road win.
“It was not a defensive battle, that’s for sure,” Corazzini said. “You could tell it was an early-season game. A lot of turnovers on both teams – and both teams capitalized.”
Groton head coach Bill Riley concurred. "It was a wild game," he said. "I wanted to see us play more disciplined, and stay out of the box. But in the first period we gave up two power play goals."
"We worked, though, and we battled back from a deficit to tie it up. It was a heartbreaker at the end."
Notes:
-- The game was played at the old Pratt Rink, as the newer O’Brien Rink was down due to mechanical issues.
Speaking of the O’Brien Rink, St. Mark’s F Trevor O’Brien is the grandson of the late Frank “Junie” O’Brien, a legendary teacher and coach at Groton, and the man for whom the rink is named. Trevor O’Brien is also the younger brother of Jay O’Brien, a former star at Dexter and Thayer. Jay is playing this season with the Penticton Vees (BCHL) and is currently the league’s second-leading scorer. A first round Philadelphia Flyers draft pick, he will be transferring to BU for the start of next season.
-- Groton coach Bill Riley has five Californians on this year’s squad, three of whom are new Zebras. Riley also has one player from Alaska, one from Florida, one from Michigan, and three from Quebec.
-- St. Mark's hosts Winchendon Saturday at 5:00 pm. Groton will be at Deerfield Saturday night at 6:00 pm, then back home on Monday for a 4:00 pm start vs. North Yarmouth Academy.

-- Taft Edges Salisbury
-- Pomfret Tops Nobles
-- Dexter Thumps Cushing
Avon Old Farms 4 @ Williston Northampton 2 -- Williston senior Jake Sacratini scored 48 seconds into the first period, but Avon came back with 4 straight goals to take control. Senior Timur Alishlalov (2g,1a) led the Winged Beavers' attack. Senior co-captain Tabor Heaslip had a pair of assists and junior Connor Callaghan (16/18) got the win in net. Avon outshot Williston, 34-18.
@ Millbrook 6, Canterbury 3 -- Millbrook senior F Niko Rexine had a hat trick -- the third goal was an empty-netter -- and senior Kyle Neudorf (1g,2a) also had a 3-point day. Junior Jake Percival and senior D David Ciancio each had 2 assists. Millbrook had the edge in shots, 48-24.
Gunnery 3 @ Hotchkiss 1 -- Senior G Carmine Andranovich stopped 25 of 26 shots to lead Gunnery to the win. The skaters in front of him poured 41 shots on Hotchkiss senior G Henry Wilder, who stopped 39 of them in a tough loss. Gunnery got second period goals from seniors Hunter Rossi and Dane Dowiak, and d-man Zander Lizotte added an ENG with 27 seconds left. Gunnery took 9 penalites; Hotchkiss took 8.
@ Taft 3, Salisbury 2 -- Taft senior G James Donaldson kicked out 39 of 41 shots, and fellow senior Zack Tonelli scored a pair of goals within a span of 1:27 in the second period to lead the Rhinos to a big win in their home opener.

Berkshire-Hotchkiss Jamborees Combine
The Berkshire and Hotchkiss Jamborees have, due to the weather, been combined into one, to be played at the Berkshire School starting at 8:30 am Monday.
Three teams -- Pomfret, Canterbury, and Brunswick -- had to cancel their trip to the Berkshire due to the weather. They have been replaced by Salisbury, Hotchkiss and Trinity-Pawling, which brings the Berkshire Jamboree back to its customary 8 teams.
Here's the schedule. Please note that the game times are earlier than in previous years. This is to allow for extra travel time at the end of the day.
Drive safely -- please.
