Missing Schedules, Rosters
On the eve of what is -- for most -- opening day of the '21-22 prep hockey season, we are still missing some rosters and schedules.
The schedules are extremely important, as we need every single game recorded. When tabulating schools' won-lost record for the playoffs, a single missing game involving any NEPSIHA schools can spell the difference between a team making the playoffs -- or not. It often comes down to the most minute difference -- we're talking decimal points here. Every game affects everyone else's fortunes. There are no inconsequential games. We need every one to be accounted for.
With that in mind, we ask coaches that haven't uploaded their schedules into our database to please do so as soon as possible. We are only missing a handful, but even one is too many. As you can see, we take this responsibility very seriously.
As for rosters, we know teams have been paring down, but for a bunch of teams that play Wednesday, rosters are still missing. We all want to see players properly and accurately credited for their achievements.
All NEPSIHA coaches, as well as NEPSIHA associate members, should have received a letter and instructions on how to set up and use their administative passwords about four weeks ago. If any coaches failed to receive the instructions (or the dog ate them), please contact us immediately at admin@ushr.com and we'll set you up.
That's it. We hate nagging, and hopefully won't have to do it again.
Thank you and good luck to you and your teams this season. It's good to be back!

Scrimmage Season Gears Up
Some prep schools have played games, but for most NEPSIHA members scrimmage season is underway. Today we hit several, with Dexter-Hill being our primary pick, almost certainly because it was a morning game, and the reception room was open. Bagels for breakfast! A free meal! Here are some notes.
@ Dexter 3, The Hill 3 (OT)
On Friday night, Dexter thumped Williston-Northampton, 9-1. Some of those goals might have been better saved for today's 3-3 tie against a Hill team that was outskilled and outshot but hung together, skated hard, and played a good, solid team game. They were rewarded too: after giving up a 1-0 lead by allowing Dexter three power play goals in the second, the visitors came back to tie it with a pair in the third. For Hill, we liked the play of sophomore LW Lucas Zimovcak, who notched a hat trick, as well as a pair of seniors in LW Brandon Spaulding and center Tyler Chenevert. On defense we liked the strong skating and solid overall play of Jack O'Brien, a sophomore, and junior Caden Olenczak. In goal, junior Ryan Sanborn, an RPI commit, faced a lot of rubber and allowed nothing but the three previously-mentioned PP tallies. Sanborn is crucial to his team's success.
The Hill has a new head coach in Sean O'Brien, most recently director of hockey ops at Harvard. O'Brien is taking over for former Hill/Harvard/Ottawa Senators forward Chris Bala, who remains at the Pottstown, Pennsylvania boarding school but needed a break. O'Brien brought in 14 new players, including his son, introduced in the paragraph above. Though Dexter got its three PP goals in the second, it should be mentioned that the Hill PK unit came up big when the game was on the line, as a Hill player was given a 5-minute major for a leg trip which left his team short-handed for the final couple minutes of the third and the first three minutes of OT. But Sanborn came up big in net, the penalty killers did their job, and Hill came away with a well-deserved tie.
As for Dexter, which is scrimmaging three times this weekend (they face Delbarton Sunday at 10:00 am), they are strong on D. And all three goals today came from the blue line. 6'2" junior LD Mick Frechette (he and his older brother Fitz, a forward, were formerly at St. Paul's) had a pair of goals sandwiched around one from senior D and captain Matt Fusco, a puck-moving Harvard commit who plays very much in the style of his father, 1983 Hobey Baker Award winner Matt Fusco. Fusco the Younger, in our opinion, was probably the top player on the ice. We also really liked junior LD Sean Keohane, who's grown to 6'4" over the past couple years. Keohane has several Div. I offers and is expected to make a decision soon. Up front, our eyes were drawn to junior forward Grayson Badger, who was at Brookline (Mass.) HS before coming to Dexter. Badger is a quick, smooth-skating right wing who scored 5 goals in Friday's win over Williston. Took an unneccessary penalty, but is dangerous, and likely to draw his share as well. He's committed to Northeastern. One thing Dexter doesn't have -- at least yet -- is a proven go-to guy up front, a game-breaker, like they've had in recent years with the likes of Ryan Donato and Jay O'Brien.
"We outshot them every period, but they kept coming," said Dexter coach Dan Donato. "They play with pace. When we turned it over they capitalized and had a couple of breakaways. We looked like a team that's four days into the season. We just gotta clean it up. That's why we're playing three this weekend."
Note: Dexter lined up like this: Wilson-Landry-Badger; Sutherland-Emery-Hughes; Naumann-Larkin-Hurton; Dwan, F. Frechette, Alexander. Defensive pairings were: M. Frechette-Fusco; Keohane-Lanza; O'Keefe-Mullahy. 7th D: Cahill. In net: Alexander Mickanin.
@ Milton 3, Winchendon 1
After leaving Dexter, this typist headed over to Milton Academy, but only got there in time for the tail end of the second, and all of the third. Didn't see enough to say much of any value, except for the fact that Milton junior RD Chris Romaine, a Providence College recruit, was the best player on the ice. This was very much a scrimmage. We'll have more on these teams the next time we see them.
Scoring
Milton -- 2nd per. -- Kelechian (unn.)
Milton -- 2nd per. -- Cohen (Romaine, Cannata)
Milton -- 3rd per. -- Romaine (Young, Allieri)
Winchendon -- 3rd per. -- O'Malley (Duffy)
@ Nobles 3, Cushing 3
Much more of a scrimmage, especially for the Nobles' players, all of whom wore numberless black sweaters. This typist had to leave after the second period. Cushing had a 3-1 lead at the time but Nobles came back with a pair of goals in the third. Cushing players circled on our card included senior G Jackson Irving, junior D Ryan Philbrick, senior D Owen Paskowski, senior center and BC recruit Billy Norcross, senior F Mason Kesselring, sophomore F Landan Resendes, freshman F Axel Favreau, and junior F Linas Dedinas.

Changing of the Guard, Exeter Style
Exeter hosts Hoosac today, and it's the first NEPSIHA game of the season. It is also, since the pandemic made a total hash of last season, the first official NEPSIHA game in 20 months.
Today's game will also mark the first time Exeter has had a new head coach in 30 years, as Tim Mitropoulos, an eight-year assistant at the school, takes over the head position from Dana Barbin. Barbin, with 500 plus wins under his belt, has downsized himself, becoming an assistant coach, the same post he took on when he was hired at Exeter in 1987. Back then, Barbin was 29, a former UNH forward who went on to play pro in Denmark. (While there, Barbin became a player/coach and later coached the Danish National Team for two seasons. Denmark was also where he met his future wife, Marianne.) At Exeter he served under Bill Dennehy for several seasons before taking over as head coach -- at which time Dennehy became Barbin's long-time assistant. Now, 500-plus wins later, Barbin's closing out his Exeter career just where he started, as an assistant. Round and round. Seems to be an Exeter tradition.
Mitropoulos came to Exeter as a PG the fall of 2009, having played four years for John Messuri at Winchester (Mass.) High School. After Exeter, Mitropoulos played four years at Tufts. He graduated in 2014, and while mulling over possibly going to grad school, received a call from Barbin telling him that a position was open at Exeter. That was eight years ago. Now, Mitropoulos, who is also head coach of the Exeter baseball team, is bench boss of the hockey team.
He was asked if he was nervous.
"It's more a feeling of being nervous and excited at the same time," Mitropoulos said. "It hasn't fully sunk in yet. Probably won't until game time. Dana will still be on the bench. We'll be talking the whole game, like always."
"We're just changing titles," Mitropoulos said. "He set a high standard and I want to keep that going. It's a great opportunity for me, to be able to do what coach Barbin has been doing for the last 30 plus years. I want to be able to do for students what he did for me."
"Both Dana and Bill have been huge mentors," he said.
Mitropoulos says "the excitment and energy around the team has been outstanding."
Co-captains are forward Kurt Gurkan, a Yale commit, and senior D Manan Mendiratta, an Irvine, Calif. native who played youth hockey with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks and was a new 11th grader last season. Michael Salvatore, a current 11th grader from Newburyport, Mass. and the Boston Jr. Bruins organization, will be in net.
On the bench, Mitropoulos will benefit from the coaching staff's familiarity with each other. In addition to Barbin, Brandon Hew, a defenseman at Hotchkiss who went on to become a captain at Amherst, will work with the D, while Jake "Shakey" Evans, a UNH backstop in the '70s, will be working with the goalies.
If you're going -- or even if you're not -- puck drop will be at 5:00 pm.

Berkshire Jamboree Schedule
This fall's 13th Annual Piatelli Jamboree at the Berkshire School, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 29th, will have a slightly different look than previous incarnations. It will still be an eight-team tournament, but more-distant schools Pomfret, Nichols, and Brunswick will be replaced by nearby Salisbury, Hotchkiss, and Trinity-Pawling. Northwood (Lake Placid, NY) is the jamboree's outlier.
"We went more local this year in an effort to prepare against any Covid challenges that may arise," Berkshire AD and head hockey coach Dan Driscoll said.

Welcome to 2021-22!
The 2021-22 Prep Pages are now officially open.
We couldn’t be happier. In March 2020, several days after the prep championships were completed, the world went dark, quickly, as the mushrooming Covid-19 pandemic reached its tentacles into every corner of our lives – and stayed there, an unwelcome guest if there ever was one.
Thankfully, though not soon enough to salvage last season, vaccines arrived. Between that and masking, we’re in a far better place.
Here at USHR, we will be celebrating our 25th season. (Technically, last year would have been our 25th.)
All of last season’s news, rosters, schedules, and stats have been archived, and new material will start going into this season’s pages immediately, as coaches begin to upload their teams' schedules.
We want to remind new readers of a couple of features we introduced over the last two seasons. Players’ career prep statistics, for one. If you click on a player’s name on the roster you will see his final stats for all the seasons he has played prep hockey and, of course, running totals for the current season. If you click on the year, say 2019-20, it will show a player's game-by-game statistics.
It is also possible to download rosters, schedules, and all statistics pages in PDF form, which has the added benefit of giving pages a cleaner look when printed out.
Pretty much all columns are sortable. Just click on the top. This is useful for, among other things, separating scoring and goaltending leaders by school, birth year, position, points, etc.
We’ve also done a lot of work on the back end, mainly behind-the-scenes stuff that you probably won’t notice beyond the fact that the site will be running more smoothly than ever.
Once we have a reasonable number of schedules posted, we will begin to keep you updated on which of them are actually up, so you won’t have to waste your time looking for those that have yet to be uploaded.
We will also be posting jamboree and holiday tournament schedules. Look for those to start going up over the coming week as well. Note to coaches: send 'em along, please.
We are also accepting advertising for the upcoming season. Please write ads(at)ushr.com for rates.
Of course, we will have the news coverage you have come to expect.
Welcome to the new season. We're glad to be here. We’re glad you’re here. And, as always, we thank you for your support.
