Winged Beavers Whack Wild Boars

Avon, Conn. -- With a loss to Berkshire last Saturday and a win over Loomis that was unnecessarily close on Wednesday, Avon coach John Gardner talked to his squad on Thursday, urging them to keep things simple and get back to playing as a team.

The message took.

Avon, ranked #2, scored 1:33 into the game and never looked back, rolling to a 9-1 win over Choate here this afternoon.

Junior Augie DiMarzo scored Avon’s first two goals, en route to a four point(2g,2a) afternoon. Juniors Chris Davis (2g,1a) and Sean Backman (2g,1a) each had three-point days. Mike Arciero (1g,1a), Joe Sides (2a), Pat Percella (2a), and defenseman Jeoff Jarnot (2a) each had two points. In addition, defenseman Jayson Cash and forward Tobias Salmelainen each scored goals, and defenseman Brian Warner and center Patrick Forshner each picked up an assist.

We could run down every Winged Beavers goal but that would be overkill. Suffice to say that just about every one of them -- with the exception of Cash’s second period power play blast from the right point -- was a goal in which the hosts had a clear path to the net. While Avon’s skill certainly played into this, they were also given a free pass by the Choate defensemen who, as Avon’s forwards worked it down low, barely laid a hand, stick, or any part of their body on them. The box score showed Choate goalie Tristen Favro giving up nine goals, but he was hung out to dry. If he’d received a little help, the score may have been more respectable. As it was, he had to come up with some nice saves late to keep it at 9-1 -- even when Avon was holding back, they were handed opportunities.

At the other end, Avon junior goaltender Jon Quick was solid, only allowing a goal late in the second when Choate senior forward Jesse Mattson slipped through the Avon D, picked up a rebound, and flipped it over Quick. The goal made it 2-1, but Avon would go on to score seven unanswered goals (three in the second; four in the third).

Notes: In other games involving ranked teams: At Ashburnham, Mass. #1 Cushing topped Exeter 3-1.... #3 Thayer, playing on the road, needed third period goals from freshmen Brian Gibbons (his second of the day) and Paul Carey to pull off a 4-3 come-from-behind win over #8 Governor Dummer…. #4 Taft topped host Trinity-Pawling, 3-1…. #6 Salisbury topped Holderness 4-2 on the road, the final goal an empty-netter by Andrew Estey, his second of the day…. #9 Andover topped host Loomis 4-1, with Kyle Kucharski notching two goals and an assist and Matt Ward kicking out 24 of 25 shots… #10 St. Sebastian’s was idle…. We’re still waiting on the Tilton-Belmont Hill and Hotchkiss-Deerfield scores.

Beauregard Stymies St. Seb’s, 1-0

Needham, Mass. -- “We were outplayed,” said Thayer head coach Larry Rooney, leaning against a wall outside the Thayer locker room after this evening’s game. “We were outshot. It was our worst game of the season. But I’ll take the W.”

“Dan Beauregard,” Rooney added, “won it for us.”

Actually, both goalies played well, as St. Seb’s had a few defensive breakdowns in their own end and looked to senior Mike Coskren to come up with the big save. However, when it was all over, Beauregard was the one with the string of zeros next to his name.

The winning goal came with about two minutes left in the second period and Thayer just starting a 5-on-3 advantage. Off the draw the puck cameback to junior defenseman Anthony Aiello at the point. Aiello slid it over to senior RW Jimmy Russo who was above the left faceoff circle on the umbrella. Russo let one rip, giving Thayer the only goal they needed.

After two minutes of 4-on-4 hockey, the Arrows spent the final 33 seconds of the game on the power play and pulled the goalie for the two-man advantage. Senior Tom Maregni had a couple of good chances, especially his second one, as the clock wound down, but St. Seb’s couldn’t convert.

The game’s first period was sloppy as the kids were a bit overamped. In the second, things settled down a bit and a few more successful plays – mostly by St. Seb’s -- were completed, though hardly a ton. The game never really developed a good two-way flow, though it was physical and competitive..

#3 Thayer, which tied St. Paul’s on Wednesday, meets Gov. Dummer in a road game tomorrow night. #10 St. Sebastian’s doesn’t play again until Wednesday.

Five Second Period Goals Propel Deerfield to 6-3 Win

Simsbury, Conn. – Deerfield, down 2-0 early in the second period, exploded for five straight goals in the second period en route to a 6-3 win over host Westminster here today.

After Westminster got first period goals from Duncan Smith and Ben Smith (no relation), Deerfield went to work against Westminster’s normally steady senior goalie Ted Levine. First, Deerfield defenseman Paul Baier walked in from the blue line, curled around one defender, and lifted a shot into the top corner at 3:21. Four minutes later, defenseman Will Boardman tied things up on the power play when his shot from the left point found its way through a screen to tie things up at 2-2. Late in the period, Deerfield got three goals in less than two minutes, as junior defenseman Ben Fields wristed one from the right point that found its way through a crowd to give Deerfield a lead they quickly added to with goals by J.J. Evans, off a nice goal-mouth pass by former Belmont High star Chris Diozzi; and Mike Butler, off a rebound of a Baier shot.

Westminster coach Tom Earl replaced Levine at the start of the third with sophomore Bryce Shattie, who shut down Deerfield with seven third period saves. Westminster junior forward Mike Vaskivuo scored a power play goal at 7:06 to cut Deerfield’s lead to 5-3, but the Big Green iced it with a Mike Collins empty-net goal with 1:16 remaining.

Notes: In games involving Top 10-ranked teams, #1 Cushing went on the road and edged the NMH Hoggers 6-4. Chris Bourque had 3g,1a for the Penguins and Matt Germain had 2g,1a for NMH… #2 Avon Old Farms came back from a 3-0 deficit to top Loomis, 4-3… #3 Thayer needed a Ryan Driscoll goal with 25 seconds left in regulation to tie up host St. Paul’s… #4 Taft beat Kent, 6-0… #5 Hotchkiss, behind a 1g,2a day from Torrey Mitchell, tied Canterbury, 3-3… #6 Salisbury got a 3g,1a day from J.J. Cunningham, and a 4 assist performance from Jerry Pollastrone in an 8-0 win over Gunnery… #7 Belmont Hill was scheduled to host St. Mark’s, but we haven’t received a score yet… Brian McGuirk had two goals and Benn Ferriero picked up three assists in #8 GDA’s 5-2 win at Lawrence Academy… Corey Schneider had a 24-save shutout as #9 Andover topped Brewster Academy, ranked #1 in Div. II… #10 St. Sebastian’s got three first-period goals and Nobles, the visitors from a couple miles away, picked up three third-period goals as the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie.

Weathermen Lay an Egg

The big winter storm expected to roll through New England last night never really materialized, choosing to take a right turn and head south into the Atlantic.

So far we have only two games that have been affected by the weather: Tilton at Tabor, which has been cancelled, and Trinity-Pawling at Choate, which will be made up tomorrow (Thurs.1/29) at 5:00 pm.

If there are any others, please send an e-mail to information@ushr.com

T-P Stuns #3 Hotchkiss

Pawling, NY – Trinity-Pawling upset #3 Hotchkiss this afternoon, outskating and outhustling the Bearcats en route to a 4-1 win.

Trinity-Pawling was led by junior Kyll Tyll who had two goals, including an empty netter with five seconds left to ice the game.

It was clear from the outset that T-P was upset minded as they took the play into the Hotchkiss end of the rink, and kept their opponents from getting a shot on net until nearly four minutes into the game. While Hotchkiss was to outshoot T-P in the period, 9-6, it was clear that Trinity-Pawling was playing on equal footing with the visitors.

Indeed, T-P outshot Hotchkiss 10-5 in the second period, and their aggressive play paid off at 12:58 of the period when junior Jason Franzone picked up a rebound left in front by Hotchkiss junior goalie Zane Kalemba and put the puck into the upper right corner to give T-P a 1-0 lead which they were able to take into the second intermission.

Hotchkiss tried to pull their game together in the early part of the third period, but T-P senior goaltender Andrew Lisi was up to the task, stopping two breakaways by Brandon Jackmuff to keep T-P in the game. Then, at 8:26, senior Dan Pencinger picked up a rink-long pass from Scott Follett and went in alone on Kalemba, putting the puck in the upper corner. Less than a minute later, Tyll scored his first goal on a pass from senior Ryan Collins, to give T-P a 3-1 lead.

Hotchkiss picked up two penalties less than ten seconds apart, giving T-P a 5-on-3 advantage, and helping to whittle off more time. But Hotchkiss finally got on the scoreboard at 15:22, when senior Joe Gardner scored on a power play. But it was too little too late, and Tyll picked up his second goal as time wound down, after Hotchkiss had pulled Kalemba in an effort to get back into the game.

Shots on goal were 25-25.

It was only the second loss of the year for Hotchkiss. The Bearcats lost to #1 Avon last week, and are now 12-2-1 on the season. Trinity Pawling is now 11-4 on the season.

Schneider Comes Up Big in 2-2 Tie

Andover, Mass. -- Putting the puck past Andover goalie – and BC recruit -- Cory Schneider is no small task, and Nobles, despite having put nearly 50 shots on him, still found themselves trailing their hosts, 2-1, as today’s game came down to its final minutes.

It looked like Schneider was going to steal a W, but then, with 3:11 remaining, Nobles senior Joe Cappellano, diving across the top of the crease, managed to get some wood on a loose puck and knocked it by Schneider. Chris Poli and Erik Pridham assisted on the goal.

The game went into overtime, and Nobles kept up the pressure on the Andover defense and Schneider. Mark Fayne, Poli, Matt Nelson, and Dan McGoff all had good opportunities in OT, but Schneider held the fort, allowing Andover to escape with a 2-2 tie.

It was the second straight day Andover, ranked #9 in this week’s USHR Div. I poll, played to a 2-2 tie, as yesterday Schneider came up big as Andover tied Thayer 2-2. Nobles was playing its second game in two days also, having lost to Lawrence Academy, 3-2, yesterday.

In the first period, with Nobles on a powerplay, senior defenseman Phil McDavitt beat Schneider through a screen to give the visitors their only lead of the day. Chris Poli picked up an assist on the play.

Andover tied it up at 1-1 when Jed McDonald, a PG defenseman out of Hingham High, barreled through the neutral zone, crossed the blue line relatively untouched, and broke in alone on Nobles senior goalie Rob Horgan. McDonald’s shot hit the post and came to rest on the goal line behind Horgan. Senior forward Stephen Russell, trailing the play, nudged the puck over the goal line with 1:09 left in the period.

In the second period Andover took a 2-1 lead when big sophomore defenseman Hunter Thunell fired a shot on net, and sophomore forward Paul Engelhardt knocked home the rebound at the 10:40 mark.

In the third, with about nine minutes remaining in regulation, Andover had a nice chance to go up 3-1 when Russell had a breakaway against Horgan but failed to get a good shot off.

A little over five minutes later, Nobles tied it up at 2-2. Despite a Nobles-dominated overtime, that’s how things ended.

The shots on goal total we were given was Nobles 56, Andover 26. We’re not sure if it was quite that many, but the point remains: Andover will go as far as Schneider takes them. On any given day, he can steal a win, and he came very close to doing that today, having to settle instead for stealing a tie.

Notes: In other games involving top ten teams, the scores we have so far are Taft 7,Canterbury 2; Cushing 7, Conn. Clippers 1; Belmont Hill 6, St. Paul's 1; Thayer 9, Milton 2; Trinity-Pawling 4, Hotchkiss 1 (which we report on below); and, in the day's biggest shocker, #1 and formerly undefeated Avon Old Farms lost at Berkshire, 5-3. One more: Salisbury played a night game at Kent and won 10-1. GDA and St. Seb’s were both idle today. Please check the box scores above for more.

#2 Cushing Edges #4 Thayer in OT

Wellesley, Mass. -- In a taught, hard-fought, up-and-down battle between two strong teams, #2 Cushing, on a Billy Ryan goal 38 seconds into overtime, edged #4 Thayer at the Babson College Skating Center here this afternoon.

On the OT game winner, senior Boomer Ewing made a pass across the low slot that Ryan, stationed below the right faceoff circle, one-timed past Thayer senior goalie Dan Beauregard. Ryan didn’t get great wood on it, but put it in the right place, about halfway up the near side.

Ewing and Ryan almost teamed up to win it with about 15 seconds left in regulation, as Ewing got the puck to Ryan who tried, and nearly succeeded, in stuffing it by Beauregard’s right pad. The pair got a second chance in OT and nailed it.

All the scoring in regulation came in the second period. Cushing got on the board first when big junior Alex Berry, from the right faceoff circle, wristed a shot through a screenthat eluded Beauregard at the 5:03 mark.

Thayer got it back a little over a minute later when sophomore LW Joe Rosano knocked home a rebound from a scramble in front of Cushing senior goalie Keith Longo.

Cushing went ahead 2-1 when Sam D’Agostino, on the powerplay, got Beauregard cheating toward the center of the net, looking for a pass, then went short side, the puck deflecting up over the goaltender’s stick at the 8:47 mark.

Thayer, after Longo made a big save on former teammate Jimmy Russo, tied the game at 2-2 when freshman LW Max Gratchev in the left corner, sent the puck out to junior defenseman Anthony Aiello at the left point. Aiello put it on net and junior RW Pierce Norton tipped it home with 1:44 left in the period.

The two teams battled through the third period, but both sides came up empty and the game went into OT where Ryan’s goal gave Cushing the win.

Cushing outshot Thayer, 39-34.

“It was a great prep school game,” Cushing coach Steve Jacobs said afterward. “Both teams played hard, two-way hockey, and both goalies played strong games.”

“This was as tough as any game we played this year, right up there with the Nobles (the 4-OT Watkins finale) game.”

Notes: In other games. #1 Avon went on the road and topped NMH, 5-2… Senior Brandon Jackmuff had six points (3g,3a) as host Hotchkiss trounced Kent, 8-1… #5 Taft had no trouble with Loomis-Chaffee, blanking them 7-0… #6 Salisbury, playing on the road, topped Trinity-Pawling 7-4… #9 Andover edged #10 St. Sebastian’s on a goal by freshman Joey Smith 2:34 into overtime. Junior Steve Rolocek had two goals and Cory Schneider kicked out 35 shots… #7 Belmont Hill and #8 GDA were both off.

Andover KO’s Exeter, 5-1

Exeter, NH -- Junior Kyle Kucharski, junior Steve Rolocek, junior J.P. Martignetti, and postgrad Mike Foley supplied the offense and senior goaltender Cory Schneider kicked out 30 Exeter shots to lead #8 Andover to a 5-1 win here earlier this evening.

Exeter went on the power play three minutes into the game and got the board just seven seconds later when Tom Dolan knocked the rebound of sophomore defenseman Kevin Crane’s shot from the point past Schneider to give Exeter a lead they would hold for… less than two minutes.

At 4:57, Martignetti scored from a scramble around Exeter goaltender Andrew Piekos. It appeared that the puck, on a clearing attempt, banked off Piekos’ left pad. At any rate, it was 1-1.

Midway through the second period, Andover took a lead they would not relinquish when Rolocek knocked home the rebound of a Jed McDonald shot from the point to make it 2-1 Andover.

In the third period, Andover went up 3-1 when Foley cut around an Exeter defenseman and backhanded it past Piekos at 2:57.

With about four minutes left, Exeter coach Dana Barbin pulled Piekos for the extra attacker, but the strategy backfired when Foley intercepted a cross-ice D-to_D pass and was off to the races, burying the puck to make it 4-1 with 3:12 remaining..

Piekos was returned to the net and Kucharski picked off another D-to-D pass and set off down the ice, scoring an unassisted goal to make it 5-1 Andover.

Exeter outshot Andover 36-29, but Andover had the edge where it counted.

Part II of this rivalry will be at Andover on Sat. Feb. 28, the last day of the regular season.

Notes: In other games involving top teams, #1 Hotchkiss, behind a four-point game (2g,2a) from Torrey Mitchell, rolled over Loomis… #2 Avon Old Farms used a balanced attack and a 15-save shutout from Jared DeMichiel in a 9-0 romp over Kent… #3 Salisbury got five goals in the second period in a 7-3 win over Westminster… Chris Bourque (2g,2a), Boomer Ewing (1g,3a), and Billy Ryan (1g,2a) led #4 Cushing past Berkshire 5-4… #5 Belmont Hill, on goals by Brian McCafferty and Matt Gordon, edged GDA 2-1 on the road.

Tabor at Holderness Postponed

The Tabor-Holderness game scheduled for tomorrow night -- expected temperature: 6 above -- has been postponed until Sunday at noon. The game will be played at Holderness and game time temperature is expected to be a balmy 24. That means if the game is tied at the end of OT, there will be swimming races (full-team relays) in Squam Lake. Just kidding, but really, wouldn't that be preferable to a tie? We're very anti-tie. There's enough inconclusiveness in life; and sports is supposed to be -- though too often isn't -- a respite from real life.

GDA Tops BB&N

Cambridge, Mass. -- The game this typist had intended to cover today was #7 Thayer vs. #5 Belmont Hill and to that end journeyed up Belmont Hill at 4 pm only to find out – doh! – that the game was at the Canton Sportsplex. Believe me, it’s not the first time it’s happened, though it is the first time in several years – the law of averages catching up, it appears. Anyway, forced to bag a game between two top ten teams (Thayer won 6-3), my choices were down to one, so I made it over to BB&N in time to see GDA beat a game, though significantly less talented, BB&N squad. Brian McGuirk had three points (2g,1a). Each of his goals, the second of which was on the powerplay, were on shots ripped from the right faceoff circle. He also clanged one off the crossbar. Brian Morrissey also had a pair for the Governors.

In other games, #2 Avon topped #1 Hotchkiss in the big tilt of the day as junior Jon Quick picked up a 23-save shutout…. #7 Thayer, as we mentioned, topped #5 Belmont Hill, 6-3, with freshmen Max Gratchev (2g,2a) and Brian Gibbons (2g,2a), and junior Pierce Norton (4a) all having four-point games… #9 Taft outshot Westminster 46-15 en route to a 5-1 win. Keith Shattenkirk had a pair of goals…. Chris Bourque (1g,4a), Keith Yandle (1g,2a), Boomer Ewing (1g,2a),and Billy Ryan (2a) ripped it up in #4 Cushing’s 6-3 home win over Tabor…. #8 Andover was upset at home, 3-2, by Bridgton Academy… For full box scores of all these games and many others, please see above.

The Summer Wind Came Blowin' in from Across the Sea

Can you believe they were playing that song at the Patriots game Saturday night? Would that have made you feel any warmer?

Anyway, tomorrow is going to be cold again in New England, and particularly so in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, where Holderness, which features a rink open to the outdoors -- builds character, man --  was planning to host Winchendon for a 4:00 pm game tomorrow. However, with gametime highs predicted to be five below xero, and with a brisk wind bringing wind chill values in the minus 40-50 range, they decided to move it indoors. The game, then, will be played at the nearby Waterville Valley Ice Arena at 2:15 pm.

On Friday night at 7:30 pm Tabor is scheduled to play at Holderness. That game may be moved, too, even though the weather is predicted to be a relatively balmy six degrees, with a 17 mph breze.

#2 Avon Edges Taft, Remains Undefeated

Avon, Conn. -- Junior goaltender Jon Quick of Hamden, Conn. kicked out 32 of 34 shots to lead #2-ranked Avon Old Farms to a 3-2 home win over #9-ranked Taft in a good up-and-down physical game here this afternoon.

It was the second time this season that Avon has beaten Taft, as the two teams met on Dec. 10 – exactly a month ago – in Watertown, Conn. and Avon came out on top by an identical 3-2 score.

In both games, Taft outshot Avon, but Quick was the difference.

Avon’s win sets up a Wednesday mid-season showdown of the undefeateds, as #1-ranked Hotchkiss (8-0-1), a 6-1 winner over Millbrook today, visits Avon (10-0-0) for a 2:30 game.

Today, Avon broke to an early 1-0 lead when junior forward Sean Backman picked up a loose puck at center ice, went out around a Taft defenseman, cut in with speed and tucked the puck past Taft sophomore goaltender Alex Kremer at the 9:55 mark.

Taft got it back with 3:37 left in the period when senior RW Keith Shattenkirk, a Princeton recruit, got the puck in the slot and, from about ten feet out, beat Quick on a great shot.

Avon picked up both goals in the second period, the first when defenseman Jayson Cash, with Avon on a powerplay, got the puck at the point and put an ice-level shot on net. Senior center Mike Arciero buried the rebound at the 7:39 mark.

Late in the period, with Taft on the powerplay and applying good pressure, Backman found junior forward Joe Sides of Sun Valley, Idaho on the right side and Sides just took off down the wing, cutting in and burying it with 4:00 left in the period for a short-handed goal that would turn out to be the game-winner.

In the third, Taft made it a one-goal game when senior wing Todd Johnson, a Brown recruit, stepped out from about five feet to the side of the net, held it nicely while walking across the slot and then, when Quick committed, snapped it past him at the 4:02 mark.

However, Taft, which outshot Avon 34-20 in the game and had the distinct edge in play in the third period, wasn’t able to get any closer. With the game on the line in the final two minutes, Avon’s forecheckers did an excellent job bottling up Taft in their own end.

Afterward, Avon coach John Gardner said, “Our goals came off quick strikes and I thought that, overall, we played tough. That’s a good team. I feel fortunate. In the third period they really came at us. But Quick played well. He was the key for us. Joe Cucci was awesome. Cash did a nice job, too.”

Taft coach Mike Maher said, “I don’t like losing, but we didn’t get outplayed. They have a great club. I was proud of our guys.”

Both teams were missing star forwards as Taft center Alex Meintel, a Harvard recruit, dislocated his shoulder in the title game of the Lawrenceville Tournament Dec. 21; and on Wednesday Avon center John Mori, a Providence recruit, had his elbow broken in a game against Pomfret. Mori hopes he’ll be able to make it back by the end of the season.

Tournament Scoring, etc.

Please note that the abbreviated box scores we ran on this page during the Christmas and New Year's tournaments were supplied to us by the respective tournaments. However, none of  the tournament stats will appear in the Team Results/Scoring Leaders section above unless the box scores are also submitted electronically by the competing schools. Electronic submission  is the only way in which information gets officially recorded on this site.

Box scores can be submitted at any time, and corrections to existing box scores, schedules, etc. can also be made at any time.

The info we ran during the tournaments was just a quick and dirty accounting so players and fans would be able to check on the day's action.

We mention this because we received e-mail from some readers wondering about it all. Basically, we provide, at no cost to the schools, the web-based architecture that enables them to submit information. We also provide free assitance -- boys, girls, Div. I or II -- to any school that requests it. We take our mission seriously because what we are compiling here is prep hockey history. Decades from now somebody may want to look up some game from back in 2004. We just want to have the best info possible for them.

After 4 OT’s, Cushing Wins Tourney Crown in Shootout

After three 18-minute periods, a five-minute OT, two 18-minute OTs, then another five-minute OT – that’s 100 minutes of hockey – Cushing and Nobles called it a draw and went to a shootout in order come up with a winner at the 13th Annual E.G. Watkins Cushing Invitational Tournament today.

Boomer Ewing, Billy Ryan, and Chris Bourque scored in the shootout to give Cushing the first place hardware. The game, however, goes into the books as a 3-3 tie, which could be a factor in the seeding of the NEPSIHA tournament.

What made the game memorable – and set up the lengthy overtime – was Nobles exploding for three goals in the final four minutes of the third to come back from a 3-0 deficit on the road.

The turning point of the game came when Cushing’s John Frey and Andrew Woodford took penalties 26 seconds apart, giving Nobles a 5-on-3 with 3:58 remaining in regulation.

Six seconds later, Nobles’ defenseman Danny McGoff blasted one from the point, which Erik Pridham tipped home to cut Cushing’s lead to 3-1.

One man came out of the box, but Nobles was still a man up. Less than a minute later, McGoff slid a pass to Union recruit Phil McDavitt, who ripped a shot from the point that deflected off a player in front and beat Cushing goaltender Keith Longo to the glove side to make it a one-goal game with 2:57 remaining.

With roughly a minute left, Nobles senior goalie Rob Horgan sprinted to the bench and the extra attacker came on. Senior forward Adam Marino got the puck to McDavitt, who once again teed it up from the left point, beating Longo on another deflection -- this one off two players -- with 31 seconds on the clock to complete the improbable comeback and send Nobles supporters into a frenzy.

Earlier, at 4:56 of the first, Cushing got the scoring started with a power play goal when Bourque, at the top of the right face off circle, hit Ewing with a nice pass. Ewing stuffed it by Horgan to make it 1-0.

Cushing made it 2-0 at 15:54 of the first when Ryan, from a dead stop at the far half boards, skated the puck below the faceoff dot, on a buttonhook of sorts, and jammed the puck by Horgan.

Nobles appeared to have scored with 27 seconds left in the period, when Joe Cappellano, pinching in, crashed the the net and beat Longo. However, the referee made a rather dubious call, ruling that the net had come off its mooring before the puck crossed the goal line. The goal would have allowed Nobles to go into the second intermission down by just one goal.

Instead, they were down by two – against a powerful team.

At 4:28 of the third Cushing extended their lead to 3-0 when Ewing fed Bourque, then joined him on a 2-on-0. There wasn’t much Horgan, with two of prep hockey’s top snipers bearing down on him, could do, and Bourque ripped one, beating him cleanly.

At that point, it looked like Cushing was just going to package things up and take it home, but a game, opportunistic Nobles team had other ideas – and McGoff and McDavitt firing from the points.

When the marathon finally came to an end, the shots on goal as registered on the board stood at Cushing 64, Nobles 42, though a more accurate count was kept  by Richard Bachman, Cushing's sophomore backup goaltender. Bachman reported 82 legitimate shots on Horgan, and 43 on Longo. Both goalies were called on to keep their teams in the game. Cushing, of course, had more shots, as well as more quality shots. For Nobles, Horgan was tremendous, coming up with the best game of his career in a big game in a very tough building to play in.

If Nobles and Cushing are to meet again this season, it would have to be in the playoffs.

Cushing’s Bourque was named tournament MVP.

The all-tournament team consisted of : F Chris Donovan (Berkshire); F Kevin Armstrong (Canterbury); F Andrew Hutton (Lawrence); D Mark Mulhern (Pomfret); F Sean Staid (NMH); G Alec Miz (Culver); D Dan McGoff (Nobles); F Chris Trovato (Nobles); F Billy Ryan (Cushing); D Keith Yandle (Cushing); G Keith Longo (Cushing); G Rob Horgan (Nobles).

Championship Game: Cushing 3, Nobles 3 (4 OT) -- Cushing wins shootout for the title. For Cushing: Bourque (1g,2a), Ewing (1g,1a), Ryan (1g,1a), Yandle (a), Lee (a). For Nobles: McDavitt (1ppg,1g), McGoff (2a), Pridham (ppg), Marino (a). Penalties: Nobles, 14 minors: Cushing, 11 minors. Goaltenders: Cushing, Longo (42/39); Nobles, Horgan (64/61).

3rd Place Game:
