Berkshire Jamboree
Rink 1:

Nichols 4, Pomfret 1 (final) --
’94-born sophomore center Andrew Poturalski (3g,1a) figured in all four of his team’s goals. Nichols is the youngest prep team we’ve probably ever seen. Four players are ‘92s and the rest are ‘93s, ‘94s, and ‘95s.

Berkshire 2, Kent 1 (final)--
Kent struck first on a Noel Acciari goal. Berkshire came back on goals by Trevor Hills and Trevor Mingoia. Mitch Gillam was in net for Berkshire and Matt Madrazo for Kent. A good, tight game.

NMH 4, Pomfret 4 (final) --
For NMH, Sean Cirbus (2g), Nick Gordon (1g,1a), and Michael Ballard (1g) led the attack. For Pomfret, it was Connor Quinn (2g), Will Archambault (1g), and Cam Geary (1g). Freshman Austin Cangelosi scored on a penalty shot for NMH.

Berkshire 4, Gunnery 1 (final) -- Trevor Mingoia (1g,1a) and Keith Veronesi (2a) each had two points for Berkshire, and Jake Goldberg, Ben Chwick, and Taylor Carmola each had a goal. Gunnery's goal was scored by Anthony D'Elia. The story of this game was the play of new Berkshire goaltender Mitch Gillam, a junior. Gillam, who only allowed one goal to Kent in the morning game, was strong from start to finish, and Gunnery put a lot of shots in him, especially in the second half. Alex Vazzano was in goal for Gunnery.

Rink 2:

NMH 5, Brunswick 1 (final) --
Brunswick went up 1-0 on a goal by Bo Stafford, but NMH answered with goals by Austin Cangelosi, Garrett McMullen, Nick Gordon, Gabe Colona, and Joe Birmingham. Branden Komm was in net for NMH.

Gunnery 5, South Kent 1 (final) –  The line of Erik Nillson, Derek Army, and Terrence Wallin led the way for Gunnery. Army had three points (2g,1a), while Wallin (1g,1a), and Nilsson (2a) each had two. Vinny Scottti and Russell Suskind also scored for Gunnery. South Kent’s goal was scored by defenseman Nick Riccio.

Nichols 3, Brunswick 2 (final) --
Poturalski (1g,1a) figured in two of his team's three goals.

Kent 2, South Kent 0 (final) --
Kent senior goaltender Marco DeFilippo looked strong in the shutout win. Matt McDonnell scored Kent's first goal early in the second half, and Tom Zerbo added an empty-netter in the final minute of play. Brad Frank was in net for South Kent.

St. Paul’s Jamboree Scores
Sunday 11/29:

Tabor 3, St. Paul’s 1
Canterbury 6, Taft 3
Tabor 5, Canterbury 3
St. Paul’s 2, Taft 1

Monday 11/30:

Tabor 7, Taft 4
St. Paul’s 4, Canterbury 1

-- We'll have more on these games Tuesday. Hopefully, there will be time to write on the off-day between jamborees.

Sunday's Games
At the morning session at the St. Paul's Jamboree, Tabor topped St. Paul's, 3-1, and Canterbury defeated Taft, 6-3.

At RPI's Houston Field House in Troy, NY, where yesterday's order of the day was mini-games, today it is full-bore games -- two 25-minute halves to be specific -- and two games have been played so far. In the first, Delbarton topped Upper Canada College, 4-2, and in the second Culver beat Kimball Union, 6-2.  We will have more on these games later on. Salisbury and Pomfret are on the ice for warmups now, and their game, the last of the day, will count in the NEPSIHA standings. 18 minute periods.

Final, 4-1, Salisbury:

2-1 Salisbury after one. Both Salisbury goals scored by senior defenseman Brandon Russo, the first on the pp and the second even-strength. With 2:33 left in the period, on the pp, Pomfret junior defenseman Shane Dunphy ripped a one-timer from just below the right face-off circle to cut Salisbury's lead in half.

PG Sam Gifford is in goal for Pomfret, and 6'5" '94-born freshman Jon Gillies is in net for Salisbury.

4-1 Salisbury after 2. Seniors Mike McCann and Kyle Hughes scored in the second to extend Salisbury's lead -- the latter goal came on the power play.

There was no scoring in the third period.

Belmont Hill Jamboree

Belmont, Mass. – We were able to see the morning session at the Belmont Hill Jamboree today, and here’s what we found.

Belmont Hill 2, Winchendon 2 --

Here’s how it went in a nutshell: Belmont Hill sophomore forward Devin Albert scored the only goal of the first period. The second period was scoreless. In the third, Bel Hill went up 2-0 on a wraparound goal by soph Jim Vesey. Winchendon scored both their goals late in the third, both coming off the stick of senior Ross White.

Winchendon will go as far this season as their top line -- White, senior Hugo Turcotte, and senior Phil Arnone – will take them. Their top D pairing consisted of seniors Sean Doherty and Patrick Coulombe. Both Winchendon goaltenders, seniors Simon Brandt and Greg Homer, got time in net, and did a good job.

Belmont Hill is a much more skilled team. But they are also very young, with 10 sophs and four freshmen on their 23-man roster. And the youngsters are impressive. Vesey was very good, appearing very comfortable out there. Albert was good too. Freshman defenseman Matt Grzelcyk played well, albeit a little more cautiously than when playing against opponents his own age. Terry Goguen was another soph d-man who played well. If they hold onto all those kids for a couple of years, Belmont Hill could get on another roll.

Of  the older Belmont Hill players, junior center Brandon McNally stood out – not exactly a surprise. Senior Brendan Fadden was very noticeable, too – he never stopped working. He’s on the small side, but will make a nice NESCAC prospect.

Derek Metcalfe was solid in net.

Governor’s 7, Proctor Academy 3 –

Governor’s, under new head coach Mike Delay, had no problem with Proctor.

Governor’s has two strong lines this season, and today the line centered by senior Brett Riley, with junior Brian Ward and freshman Nathan Ferriero on the wings, was pretty unstoppable, accounting for five of Governor’s seven goals. For the record, Riley and Wared each had a pair, and the youngest Ferriero added a singleton.

Governor’s other scoring line has senior Cody Ferriero centering seniors Josh Adinolfo and Jake Picking. Adinolfo and Picking each picked up a goal.

Proctor had a hard time. Because of a swine flu epidemic a large number of students, including seven hockey players, were sent home a couple weeks ago, so the team didn’t have their first full-squad practice until last night. Their biggest problem today was overall defensive play, and goaltending in particular. Once again, Keith Buehler, now a senior, is the go-to guy. He’s an average skater but has a real head for the game and nose for the net. He didn’t have his best game today, but is dangerous nonetheless. The best player for Proctor today was lanky ’93 sophomore LC Jon Felteau, who made a really nice pass on Proctor’s first goal, off the stick of sophomore Ryan Kangas, and then scored their second goal, off a feed from senior Connor Toomey. Another very noticeable player for Proctor was sophomore Ryan Rumble, who played on a line with Felteau and Kangas.

Buehler scored the Hornets’ third goal, from Connor Toomey and Nik Tasiopoulos.

Yale Prep Showcase

Live updates today!

Milton 3, Berkshire 1 (final):

Milton got goals from Sean Okita and defenseman Pat McNally, who picked the top corner nicely.

Berkshire came back with a late goal by Ryan MacDonald, off a rebound, but  McNally added an empty-netter to make it 3-1.

Sean Dougherty picked up the win in the Mustangs net.

Sam Raphael was in goal for Berkshire.

Milton 4, South Kent 0 (final) --

Junior Doo Soo Kim scored a pair of goals, the second of them an unassisted breakaway goal; and Sean Okita and TJ Schneider added single goals to lead the Milton attack.

Dan Bowen had the shutout for Milton.

For South Kent, Rasmus Reijello was in net for the first 30 minutes, and Tom O’Connor played the last five minutes.

Cushing 2, Berkshire 1 (final):

For Cushing, Collin Bourque roofed one on the pp, with an assist going to RJ Boyd. Cushing’s other goal came when freshman Robbie Baillargeon deflected an RJ Boyd shot from the left point.

For Berkshire, Jake Goldberg is out with a bruised shoulder.  Their goal was scored when sophomore Trevor Hills made a nice pass out from behind the net onto the stick of Trevor Mingoia. Kyle Lockwood also assisted on the play.

Mike Reed was in goal for Cushing, and Mitch Gillam for Berkshire.

Cushing 3, South Kent 0 (final) --

Cushing got goals from Mike Conderman, Petter Aronsson, and Collin Bourque to win the mini-game, 3-0. Marcus Calvanico got the shutout for Cushing. Brad Frank was in net for South Kent, which, with Mike Pereira, Garrett Clement, and Neil Fachini all departed, appeared a little depleted.

Update:

The Milton Academy bus -- the Fung-Wah? -- broke down in Mystic, Conn (though it's moving again), so the schedule has been changed, and will go to the one-period mini-game format. Cushing is playing South Kent now, to be followed by Cushing-Berkshire, Milton-South Kent, and finally Milton-Berkshire.

Delbarton 6, NMH 4 (final)

NMH lead 3-2 at the half, but Delbarton came back with four goals in the second half for a 6-4 win.

For Delbarton, the Michael Ambrosia-Mike Pirovano-Kenny Agostino line accounted for five of their six goals. Dennis Dering got the other, with an assist from defenseman Matt Killian.

Bobby Kaminski and Colton Phinney split 50-50 in the Delbarton net.

For NMH, the Austin Cangelosi-JC Cangelosi-Joe Birmingham line accounted for two goals, and the Nick Gordon-John Scuese-Garrett McMullen line accounted for the other two.

Brandon Komm played the full game in the NMH net.

Dexter 6, Rice Memorial 1 (final) --

Nick Bligh (2g), Mark Fidler (1g,1a), John Magliozzi (1g, 1a), and Cam Darcy (2a) led the Dexter attack. Kevin Green was in net.

Due to injury and sickness, Rice Memorial had to make do with 10 skaters for today’s game.

Gunnery 2, Northwood 2 (final) –

Northwood scored a couple in the first half, but Gunnery came back with a pair of goals second apart midway through the second half.

Alex Vazzano made some nice saves early in the second, keeping Gunnery in the game, and allowing them to come back.

Zach Popp and Chris Powers scored for Northwood. Tommy Fiorentino, Matteo Pieti, Chris Mastropieto each had assists.

Derek Army and Anthony D’Elia scored Gunnery’s goals. Erik Nillson, Nick Luuko, Vinny Scotti, and Terrence Wallin picked up assists.

Raphael Girard was in goal for Northwood.

Gunnery senior forward Matt Milana was injured in the second half, and was taken off on a stretcher. We’ll try to get you an update, but Milana waved as he was taken off on a stretcher following a 15-minute delay during which both teams returned to their dressing rooms. (Update: he’s fine.)

Note: They’re using 35-minute running time halves here.

Founders’ League Jamboree Schedule

Here is the final schedule for the Founders’ League Jamboree, which will be held at the Hotchkiss School on Wed. Dec. 2.

The jamboree will start 45 minutes later than the time found on the tentative schedule we published a couple weeks ago. Also a handful of matchups have been changed to accommodate the travel needs of some teams.

The new starting time is 1:30 pm, with the first game taking place at Dwyer Rink, which is the back rink, and an Olympic sheet. At 1:45 pm, the puck drops at the front rink, and that pattern follows throughout the day.

The games, all mini-games, will be 25-minutes stop time. In order that all of the games start and end on time, it may be necessary to go to running time at the end of a period.

All teams will be playing two mini-games with the exception of Hotchkiss and Salisbury, each of whom will be playing three. Hotchkiss, of course, is the host school, and Salisbury is just a few miles east of Hotchkiss.

Due to the elimination of Div. II this season, Kingswood-Oxford becomes the 11th team in the Founders’ League -- they were already in the Founders’ League in other sports. Each Founders’ League team will be playing them once during the regular season.

Founders’ League Jamboree @ Hotchkiss, 12/2/09:

1:45 pm – Kent vs. Avon (Schmidt Rink)

36th Annual Lawrence/Groton Schedule

The 2009 Lawrence/Groton Holiday Tournament will be held Thurs.-Sat. Dec. 19 at Lawrence Academy and Groton School (which has two sheets). The tournament is very different looking than it was two years ago, or even last year when Lawrence and Governor’s joined up in what turned out to be a one-year experiment.

This year’s tournament will have an eight-team Tournament Division as well as a ten-team Showcase Division.

The traditional Friday night Lawrence vs. Cushing matchup is still in place.

The way the champion of this year’s Lawrence/Groton Tournament will be determined will start with a point system – three for a win, one for a tie and one additional for a shootout win. If two teams are tied after the round robin, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, followed by goal differential (with a maximum of five, to discourage blowout wins). On Friday night Dec. 18, the tournament committee will add the points up and to determine who plays in Saturday’s championship game. There will be no third, fifth, or seventh place games. Rather, the committee -- Kevin Potter is the Lawrence coach, while Bill Riley is the new coach at Groton this season -- will schedule games for Saturday morning among the six remaining teams. In scheduling these three games, Potter and Riley will attempt to match up teams that didn’t meet in the round robin, while at the same time matching up teams of roughly equal ability.

Tournament Teams
Culver Military Academy—Culver, IN
Cushing Academy—Ashburnham, MA

Exeter Opens Season With Win

Host Exeter topped Bridgton Academy, 7-1, this afternoon. The top line of senior LW Josh Richards (2g,3a), new junior center Eric Neiley (2g,2a), and 6’4”, 215 lb. postgrad RW Charlie DeVries (1g) accounted for five goals, while PG Jeremy Plante, who centers the second line and is the fourth forward on the PP unit, had two goals of his own. The fifth member of the top power play unit is PG defenseman Kevin Hart, out of Greely HS in Maine.

Senior goaltender Max Fenkell played the first two periods – and the first five minutes of the third – and stopped all 22 shots he faced.

This, of course, was not a NEPSIHA game. For that, Exeter will have to wait until Saturday, when they host Brewster on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
