Flood-Marr Holiday Tournament (Day 3 of 3)

(@ Milton Academy)
Playoff Round
8:00 am -- 7th Place Game -- Deerfield 4, Hotchkiss 1
10:00 am -- 5th Place Game -- Andover 3, Milton 2
12:00 pm -- 3rd Place Game -- KUA 2, Westminster 1
 2:00 pm -- Championship Game -- Salisbury 4, Nobles 3

Milton, Mass. -- When Salisbury scored two goals 40 seconds apart early in the first period, it looked as if it might be a long day for Nobles. But it didn't turn out that way at all, as they pulled themselves together, and came all the way back, tying the game on a Drew Bennett powerplay goal (his second of the game) with 6:20 in the third.

Salisbury senior Derek Barach, however, saved the day for his team and preserved their undefeated (9-0-1) season, driving home a rebound with just 27 seconds left in regulation to give Salisbury the lead -- and the tournament championship.

Salisbury's other goals were scored by Evan Smith, who had two, and sophomore defenseman Griffin Luce, who put his team up 1-0 early.

In addition to Bennett's two goals, Nobles got a goal from senior defenseman J.C. Brassard.

Nobles, now 5-2-1, outshot Salisbury, 20-18.

"After giving up a two-goal lead our guys were able to regain composure and focus and get back to where we were earlier," said Salisbury head coach Andrew Will. "We were hard on pucks and relentless getting in on the forecheck and getting pucks deep and then getting it out to the points and crashing the net. We scored our first goal that way and the third originated from the point, too."

"Derek did a great job in front of the net," Will added. "He was terrific this weekend. He relishes the pressure. He wants to be on the ice in key situations."

Nobles coach Brian Day said, "We put ourselves behind the 8-ball early, but from that point on we played well. We turned it into a 50-50 game. We competed hard against a really good, deep team. We worked hard to tie it up and we gave ourselves every chance to win."

"We are a better team now than when we started the tournament Friday. We came a long way. It was disappointing to lose today, but this will serve us well as a team."

Taft-Gunnery Deep-Sixed by Broken Scoreboard

The scoreboard/game clock at Gunnery was broken so today’s scheduled game against Taft wasn’t played. The scoreboard had actually been on the fritz for several days and the two schools’ ADs, Rob Madden at Taft and Jon Russillo at Gunnery, had been in communication about moving the game to Taft’s rink, which is 20 minutes down the road from Gunnery. When the clock at Gunnery still wasn’t working two hours before game time, Taft coach Dan Murphy said that he understood, after speaking with Madden, that Gunnery was going to be coming to Taft. Here, something went haywire because Gunnery coach Chris Baudo had been in contact with the game officials who said they would be OK with doing the game without a clock. Shortly afterward, the officials showed up at the Gunnery.

“Our clock visually didn’t work,” said Baudo, “but the console still worked so we called the refs and they said that was fine. But Taft wouldn’t play without visual representation.”

So Taft, basically, was expecting Gunnery to show up at their school. But Gunnery, once they had the refs OK to play without a clock, lost interest in shifting the game to Taft.

Murphy, who felt that the game would suffer if played without a clock, said, “I’m disappointed we didn’t play the game as we have a facility with a clock that works. I do not know if the game will be rescheduled. I’m bummed about it. Gunnery is my alma mater. I was excited to play the game, and the kids were excited.”

NHL scouts, college recruiters, parents, and fans who showed up had to turn around and head north, south, east and west, through the snow-covered Litchfield Hills, back to wherever they came from.

Tues. 12/17/13 -- Snow has caused the cancellation -- or postponement - of Belmont Hill @ Milton, Andover @ Groton, and Gloucester Catholic @ Delbarton. As of 1:00 pm the St. George's @ Tabor game is still on.

Sat. Dec. 14 Highlights

Ashburnham, Mass. – Cushing Academy got two goals from senior Adam Augusta and a 23-save effort from junior goaltender Joey Daccord to top Exeter 3-1 here today. For Cushing it was a solid team effort while Exeter seemed flat, falling behind 3-0 before getting a late second period goal from Kevin Neiley, Exeter’s most effective forward today, to cut it to 3-1. It was an efficient, workman-like effort from the Penguins from start to finish and the outcome never seemed to really be in doubt. The game was clean and not particularly physical, and didn’t have the edge of traditional Cushing-Exeter games.

“I liked our discipline on the forecheck,” said Cushing head coach Rob Gagnon afterward. “We had sticks in the passing lanes and I felt like our D did a good job playing D and getting pucks up. That’s all we want because part of our philosophy is if we get pucks to the neutral zone we’re OK because our forwards are so good. Bailey Conger and Jake Simons were good today. Matt Hoover competes and does a good job. All four lines were contributing. I also think we did a good job clogging up the neutral zone and that might have taken Exeter out of their game a bit.”

“A tip of the hat to Cushing,” said Exeter head coach Dana Barbin. “They beat us. We had our share of opportunities on the powerplay, but they did a good job killing them. We didn’t play with a whole lot of confidence.

@ Westminster 5, Pomfret 2 – Sophomore Taggart Corriveau scored four straight goals – a natural hat trick in the first, and then a single goal in the second -- to give his team a 4-0 lead after two en route to a 5-2 home win. Of Corriveau’s four goals, two were even strength and two came on the PP. Junior D Frankie Sullivan, junior F Jack Fitzgerald, and sophomore F Johnny McDermott each had two assists. Westminster sophomore goaltender Stephen Gasior (22/24) earned the win. Five of the game’s combined seven goals came on the power play.

Avon Old Farms 4 @ Trinity-Pawling 2 – Avon held a 3-0 lead early in the second, but T-P came back with a pair to make it interesting. An empty-netter gave the Winged Beavers their final goal. T-P outshot Avon 38-26 but Avon junior goalie Tucker Weppner kicked out 36 shots to earn the win.

Berkshire 4 @ NMH 1 – Senior goalie George Blinick stopped 36 shots and classmates Charlie Corcoran (3a) and Craig Puffer (1g,1a) led the attack. Shots on goal were 37-37.

@ Deerfield 4, Choate 2 – Junior goalie Jake Kahler kicked out 17 shots and senior forwards Sam Lafferty (1g,2a), Trevor Yates (3a), and Camil Blanchet (1g,1a) led the attack. The Big Green outshot Choate, 31-19.

Kimball Union 5 @ Tilton 1 – Senior Tyler Bird (2g,1a) had three points. Senior F Joey Dudek (1g,1a), senior D Ben Shapiro (2a), and junior F AJ Greer (2a) each had two. Junior Gavin Nieto stopped 20 of 21 shots for the win.

@ Holderness 4, Kents Hill 1 – Holderness got goals from four different scorers and junior G Mark Michaels stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced.

@ Dexter 8, Hebron 0 – Junior F Ryan Donato (3g,3a) had a six-point afternoon and senior goaltenders Pat Fraser and Joe Kelly combined for a 21-save shutout. Soph Kevin Hock (1g,2a), junior Matt Brazel (1g,2a), and senior Mark Webber (2g) were other contributors. Seniors Liam Feeney and Ian Sheridan each added two assists.

Milton 4 @ Governor’s 1 – Milton captain and senior defenseman Chad Malinowski (2g,1a) figured in three of the Mustangs’ four goals, as did senior D Connor Wynne (3a).  Junior Drew Hotte (16/17) earned the win in goal.

@ Brooks 3, St. Mark’s 0 – Junior goaltender Max Prawdzik stopped all 15 shots he faced for the shutout, and sophomore F Henry Cormier (2g) and senior Ian Speliotis (2a) teamed up on two of Brooks’ three goals.

@ Tabor 4, St. Paul’s 2 – The Seawolves handed St. Paul’s their first loss of the season as senior forwards Joe Slovak (2g,1a) and Fred Kaub (1g,2a) each had three points. Junior goalie Riley Whitham (22/24) earned the win.

Dexter Thumps Nobles
Dedham, Mass. -- Dexter continued their strong start tonight, going into Nobles’ barn and coming out with a 7-5 win.

Junior forwards Ryan Donato (2g,1a) and Matt Brazel (1g,2a) each had three points to lead the Dexter attack. Senior F Mark Webber (2g), sophomore F Kevin Hock (2a) and senior D Liam Feeney (2a) each had two points for Dexter. In all, 12 Dexter players recorded at least one point.

Dexter came out with a strong first period, with Ryan Donato getting things started with a shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Nobles’ sophomore goalie Brendan Cytulik. Five minutes later sophomore forward Joe Feeney banged home a rebound in the slot to make it 2-0 at the first intermission.

The game’s key period was the second. Nobles, trailing by two, got their opportunity to quickly get back into the game when Dexter junior forward Sam D’Antuono was whistled for a major. During the ensuing five-minute power play Nobles was able to get one goal, on a Billy Sweezey shot from the left point. The goal came at the 7:36 mark. Later in the period, Nobles junior F Cal Burke came down the right side, turned the Dexter d-man, and beat Pat Fraser cleanly to make it 2-2 at the 12:44 mark.

It looked like Nobles had the momentum but, if so, it was short-lived as Dexter answered with three straight goals in a span of 1:48. The first goal, which would turn out to be the game-winner, came when Mark Webber jammed home a puck in the crease – a powerplay tally. Just 39 seconds later, Brazel capitalized on a Nobles turnover, going high glove side to make it 4-2. A little over a minute after that, a Ryan McDougall shot from the point was tipped home by Kevin Merle. Dexter’s blitz gave them a 5-2 lead to take into the second intermission.

When the teams returned to the ice for the start of the third period, Nobles head coach Brian Day had replaced his starting goalie, Cytulik, with sophomore Austin Bonasia.

Nobles appeared to get the message, as soph Cam Burke scored at the 1:37 mark to cut the Dexter lead to 5-3. But again, Dexter had a quick answer as, just 1:19 later, Donato scored perhaps the prettiest goal we’ve seen since the start of the prep season, displaying stick wizardry as he reduced the Nobles defenders to lampposts while cruising down the slot and beating Bonasia to make it 6-3. Dexter made it 7-3 on the powerplay, when Webber scored his second of the night, tipping home a Liam Feeney point shot.

The game held there for about ten minutes and it looked like the string was just being played out, but Nobles got a late boost, scoring two goals in the final two plus minutes, the first on a Billy Carrabino shot from the point, and the second, with 12 seconds left and the goalie pulled, when Miles Wood converted from a scrum in front.

Nobles outshot Dexter 41-29, but weren’t skating or making plays like they did last weekend in the win at Belmont Hill. Wood, who has been on a tear, wasn’t much of a factor in this one. Nobles is also having a hard time keeping the puck out of their net, having given up 12 goals over their last two games – five in a 9-5 win over Tabor and seven tonight. The forwards are going to have to turn into a reincarnation of the ’76 Canadiens to overcome that.

“I thought we played a really disciplined game,” said Dexter head coach Dan Donato. “We played a really good first period. But that five-minute major really impacted the game and when they tied it at 2-2 it became a real test of character. We scored three goals – that impressed me. It was a great testament to our seniors and goalie to keep us in there and not let that lead slip away.”

Donato pointed out that Nobles is great in transition, and the coaches kept a third guy high in an effort to neutralize the rush.

Donato felt the key guys for Dexter tonight were, up front, Ryan Donato and Matt Brazel who, the coach said, “was a big impact guy tonight.” Donato also praised the play of Liam Feeney on D.

“A lot of guys played well for us tonight," he added.

Sat. Dec. 7 Highlights

Salisbury 3 @ Williston-Northampton 2 – In an extremely rough, penalty-filled game – ten per team -- in which the refs had difficulty keeping things under control, Salisbury, relentless on pucks, scored all three of their goals in a span of less than three minutes in the second period.Williston senior goalie Tim Nowacki (35/38) kept his team in the game. Senior Mitchell Datz (23/25) got the win for Salisbury. Senior Mitchell Smith had two points (1g,1a) for Salisbury and he, along with his brother Evan, were a force all night. 6’3” Salisbury senior F Harrison Luce got a major for a hit from behind and was tossed.

Groton 4 @ Deerfield 4 – Deerfield had a 2-0 lead after one period, and a 3-1 lead midway through the second. However, the Big Green squandered it, allowing three straight goals. That gave Groton the lead for most of the third period, but a goal by junior Kevin Doyle at the 11:08 mark allowed Deerfield to salvage a tie. For Groton, 6’2” soph Michael Brown (2g,1a) and 5’7” junior Ace Cowans (1g,1a) were the top guns. For Deerfield, seniors Sam Lafferty and Trevor Yates each had a goal and an assist.

@ Proctor 4, Brewster Academy 3 – Undefeated Proctor (3-0-1) got three first period goals to take a 3-0 lead into the second period, but had to hold on and withstand a three goal performance from Brewster senior captain Joe Osaka to escape with the win. Osaka, a native of Tokyo, Japan, scored the final goal of the game with the goalie pulled for the extra skater and 1:19 on the clock. But Brewster was unable to get the equalizer. Proctor outshot Brewster 40-23. Brewster junior goalie Kevin Lacroix, coming on in relief and playing 43 minutes, stopped 35 of 36 shots to allow his team to get back in the game.

@ Taft 4, Berkshire 3 – Taft, trailing by a goal entering the third, got a pair of goals – from juniors Ross Colton and Peter Straub -- to pull out a 4-3 win at home tonight. Colton had two goals on the night, while Straub had two goals and an assist. For Berkshire, senior Craig Puffer had two goals and an assist. Taft is now 3-1-0, with their only loss coming to Salisbury.

Trinity-Pawling 4 @ Loomis-Chaffee 3 (OT) – 6’3” D Johnny Coughlin, T-P’s captain,  scored his second goal of the game with 48 seconds left in regulation to send the game to OT, where his teammate, 6’1” senior Kyle Zacharewicz, won it with one second to go. Earlier, T-P held a 2-0 lead after one, but Loomis, on a pair of goals from 6’3” senior Kristofer VanGameren, tied it up at 2-2 in the second.

Holderness 4 @ Worcester Academy 2
– Holderness got four goals from four different scorers, outshot Worcester by a vast margin, and never trailed in this game. But special credit in a losing cause must go to 6’0” Worcester junior goaltender Calum Hepburn (from Dumfries, Scotland) who kicked out 58 of the 62 shots he faced. PG Patrick Flahive scored both of Worcester’s goals.

@ St. Andrew’s 5, Stanstead College 0 – Justin Fregona (1g,2a), Warren Foegele (1g,1a), and J.D. Falconer (1g,1a) led St. Andrew’s. Matthew Galadja (14/14) got the shutout. SAC held a 35-14 edge in shots.

Albany bounced back in the second with a pair of goals off the stick of junior Shawn Knowlton, the second on a 5x3 PP. Avon senior G Cody Doyle stopped 30 shots, while AA senior Josh Egan stopped 38.

The Midwest Prep Hockey League’s Bowers Division continued their weekend showcase in Aurora, Ontario on Saturday with four regular season games.

The host squad from St. Andrew’s College (SAC) opened the day against Stanstead College. The Saints would take the game 5-0 but the play was much closer than that as the Saints didn’t break the deadlock until the midway point of the second period, but from there they took control. Goals were scored by J.D. Falconer, Warren Foegele, Austin Cho, Matthew Graham, and Matthew Kennedy. Junior netminder Matthew Galajda earned the shutout.

In the second game of the day, Rice Memorial continued their strong play on the weekend, taking advantage of a shorthanded Ridley College squad and skating off with a 2-1 victory. Timmy Shea and Nicholas Martineau scored for Rice, while Shane Woolsey scored for Ridley.

To open up the evening’s round of matches, SAC took on a well-rested Edge team. Again, the Saints’ 5-2 victory was somewhat misleading as the teams played a tight game until the Saints pulled away in the third. Junior Kyler Magus opened the scoring for Edge before Justin Fregona, Matthew Kennedy, J.D. Falconer, and Zach Marcus answered with four straight. Edge senior Kurtis Woodhouse cut the SAC lead to two before Zac Masson sealed the win with a late powerplay goal.

Saturday’s final game pitted Ridley College against Stanstead College. After Stanstead opened the scoring with a goal off the stick of senior Jack Patterson, Ridley took control, scoring six straight. Juniors Trent Fox and Shane Woolsey each had two, and Alec Samuels and Trevor Bush had one apiece. Stanstead senior Max Hopper scored to make it a 6-2 final.

The final two games of the weekend take place on Sunday morning with Stanstead taking on Edge and then SAC hosting Rice. Check out the results at www.themphl.com.

MPHL Friday Recaps

The Bowers Division of the Midwest Prep Hockey League is meeting for a slew of league games this weekend at St. Andrew’s College in Aurora, Ontario.

The weekend opened on Friday morning with match-ups between St. Andrew’s and Ridley College (St. Catharine’s, Ont.) as well as the Edge School (Calgary, Alb.) and Rice Memorial (S. Burlington, Vt.).

St. Andrew’s College 5, Ridley College 0 – Senior Brett Nichol earned the shutout for the Saints, while Warren Foegele, J.D. Falconer, Quentin Campbell, Matthew Graham, and Zac Masson each scored a goal.

Rice Memorial Prep 1, Edge School 1 -- Rice and Edge neutralized each other for most of the game, neither team pulling away. Junior Charlie Marchand scored for Edge, while junior Anthony Philip provided Rice’s lone goal.

Rice Memorial Prep 1, Stanstead College 1 – For Rice, it was their second straight 1-1 draw of the day, this time against Stanstead College, who were playing their first game of the weekend. Sophomore Jeremy Descheneaux opened the scoring early in the third for Stanstead before Rice senior D Anthony Champagne tied the game with an unassisted goal with just 12 seconds remaining.

Edge School 2, Ridley College 1 – In the day’s finale, Andrew Badour opened the scoring for Ridley before Edge forwards Quinn Mosby and Charlie Marchand responded with a pair of unanswered goals.

Action continues Saturday morning with SAC and Stanstead squaring off at 10:00 am, followed by Ridley and Rice at 12:15 pm.

Hoggers Keep Martlets Down

Gill, Mass. -- It was a matchup of two teams that have started their seasons in opposite directions: Northfield-Mt. Hermon came in with a record of 3-0 with victories over Stanstead, Hoosac, and Brunswick. Westminster, on the other hand, came into the season with high expectations but, after losses to Trinity-Pawling and Brunswick came to NMH looking for their first win of the season.

They didn’t get it, as NMH prevailed, 3-2.

The game started off with a fast pace, both teams trading opportunities early before NMH capitalized when PG Bradley Allen – after junior D Alden Weller put the puck on net from the point -- banged home the rebound of a shot by PG Will Pappas at the 1:55 mark.

Westminster tied the game at 1-1 when 6’3” senior F Mario Benicky redirected a shot from the blue line with 8:07 left in the first.

NMH went up 2-1 just 54 seconds later when 6’2” Matt Greenwood, a PG from Oakville, Ontario, fired a low shot through traffic in front. Hamilton never saw the shot and didn’t react until the puck was already in the back of the net.

The Hoggers would make it 3-1 with 4:26 left in the first as PG Christian Heidelberger scored on a 5x3 power play. 6’4” junior Ben Freeman, a UConn recruit, took a shot from the high slot that rebounded to Heidelberger hiding out by the side of the net. Hamilton had no chance.

The second period, which was scoreless, was dominated by Westminster. Ditto for the third. However, despite controlling the play, the Martlets had a hard time placing shots on net. Westy was rewarded for their play with multiple power play opportunities but tried to be too cute with the puck on the man advantage, thus passing up numerous scoring chances.

Westminster would pull within one late in the third. 6’2” sophomore Johnny McDermott skated off the boards on the powerplay, wristing a shot from inside the circle that beat Kyle Redmond with 3:55 to play. That would be as close as Westminster would get in this one, falling to 0-3. Senior Zac Hamilton had 28 saves in the loss. NMH climbed to 4-0 with PG Kyle Redmond stopping 34 shots in the win.

Coach Day KO’d, but Nobles Dominates at Belmont Hill

Belmont, Mass. – Nobles head coach Brian Day only saw the first 14:46 of this afternoon’s game before a puck rocketing towards the bench slammed into his nose. Day’s legs crumpled under him as he disappeared from view behind his players. But he was back on his feet fairly quickly and, several minutes later, was led off the ice under his own power, a towel pressed to his face.

“You could hear the impact,” said assistant coach Mark Spence. “I immediately asked if he was OK, and he said ‘No.’ There was a lot of blood pouring from his nose.”

Day, who was glancing behind the play when the puck found him, was taken to the hospital. Spence was able to talk to him after the final buzzer, though he lost the connection and didn’t have a precise update as to his condition. At the very least a broken nose seems likely.

By the time all this drama had transpired, though, Nobles was rolling, holding a 4-1 lead after blitzing Belmont Hill for four goals in a nine-minute span en route to a 7-3 final.

Junior forward Miles Wood (1g,2a), and senior LD J.C. Brassard (1g,2a), led the point parade with three apiece. Ninth grader Cam Burke had a pair of goals. Sophomore Michael Fahie (1g,1a) and big senior Drew Bennett (2a) each had two points. Junior D Billy Carrabino snapped off a strong wrister from the left point for a second period goal. Jake Mercier added a goal in the third.

The game started out at a frantic pace and Belmont Hill, on the first few shifts, carried the play, but then Nobles took over with a vengeance. The visitors’ first two goals, just ten seconds apart – at 4:20 and 4:30 – were both rebound goals that resulted from heavy pressure on the Belmont Hill net. The Hillies senior goalie, Ryan McConnell, who was not sharp today, also didn’t get much help from his defensemen, who were overpowered down low.

Belmont Hill cut the lead to 2-1 when sophomore Christian Faggas carried the puck into the zone, and took a shot that rebounded to senior forward Dan Seibel, who fired it past Nobles sophomore goalie Brendan Cytulik at 6:55.

Nobles came right back when a Brassard shot from the point found its way past McConnell at the 8:45 mark. A little over four minutes later a shot by Cam Burke from inside the left faceoff circle made it 4-1.

Less than two minutes after that, Day went down. Shortly after play resumed Nobles found themselves having to kill off a 5x3 powerplay. Nobles could easily have been distracted by those two events, but they weren’t. They held the fort and took a well-earned 4-1 lead into the first intermission.

By the three minute mark of the third, they held a commanding 6-1 lead.

At the eight minute mark of the third period, Belmont Hill’s smooth skating sophomore forward Ricky Cronin tucked one short side past Cytulik. With two seconds left in regulation, Faggas notched the Hillies’ third and final goal, and the game came to a merciful end.

To show how bad things were for Bel Hill, senior Joe Welch was crunched by one of his own teammates over by the scorers’ table and had to leave the game for precautionary purposes (concussion).

“We didn’t compete the way we need to in order to be competitive in this league,” said Belmont Hill head coach Jeremiah McCarthy. “Physically, (Nobles) won every one-on-one battle in the first and the scoreboard reflected that.”

“The game was defined by that period. We had two great shifts to start, so it’s not like we weren’t prepared, but we were definitely unable to sustain that up-tempo, take-away-time-and-pace game.”

Nobles assistant coach Mark Spence praised the play of Cytulik, adding that, “All the lines contributed. It was nice to see -- a total team effort.”

Wed. Dec. 4 Highlights

Dexter 4 @ Cushing 2 – A scrappy Dexter squad, playing on the road and trailing 2-1 midway through the third, scored three unanswered goals to pick up a big win. Senior Pat Fraser (29/31) was solid in the Dexter net; junior Joey Daccord (30/34) took the loss for Cushing. Dexter, treated unkindly by officials – Ryan Donato had the stick knocked out of his hands three times with no calls -- got good penalty killing. They also got goals from four different scorers, which was key because Cushing d-men Malcolm Hayes and Richie Boyd were effective in neutralizing Donato.

St. Mark’s 3 @ Proctor 3 -- Sophomore F Derek Osik scored with 31 seconds left in regulation to lift St. Mark’s to a 3-3 road tie. Luke O’Brien (2g,1a) figured in all three St. Mark’s goals. Sophomore Jake Pappalardo (3a), and junior Hunter Luhmann (3a) figured in all three Proctor goals while junior Derek Britner scored two goals. Proctor outshot St. Mark’s 41-35, but sophomore Ryan Ferland came up with 38 saves.

Kent 11 @ Kingswood-Oxford 0 – Senior James Ricciardi had a hat trick.

@ Millbrook 4, Canterbury 1 – In the third period, Millbrook broke open a 1-1 game by scoring three goals within a 3:30 span.  Millbrook PG goalie Josh Davies (28/29) earned the win.

@ Exeter 8, Kents Hill 1 – PGs Henry Hart (1g,2a) and David White (2g) led the Exeter attack today. Exeter outshot Kents Hill 32-15.

@ Hebron 4, Holderness 0 – Hebron senior goaltender Austin Wildes stopped all 34 shots he faced for the shutout.

@ Trinity-Pawling 6, Westminster 2 – In the third period, host T-P scored four unanswered goals to break a 2-2 tie. Seniors Kyle Zacharewicz (2g,2a), Devin Brink (2g,1a), and defenseman Johnny Coughlin (1g,1a) led the attack. T-P outshot Westy, 35-21. The Martlets fall to 0-2-0 in the early going.

@ Winchendon 6, New Hampton 3 – Winchendon got goals from six different scorers. Senior Oscar Forell (28/31) picked up the win.

Nobles 8 @ Pomfret 3 – Sophomore forward Michael Fahie (1g,3a) had four points; senior F Drew Bennett (2g,1a), junior D Billy Sweezey (2g,1a), and junior F Cody Tedesco (1g,2a) each had three points. Sophomore F Luke Stevens (2a), junior D Billy Carrabino (1g,1a), and senior D JC Brassard (2a) each had two points. For Pomfret, senior Andrew Slotnick (2g,1a) figured in all three of their goals.

@ Williston-Northampton 4, Kimball Union 4 – Junior AJ Greer scored his second goal of the game at 13:59 of the third period to lift KUA into a tie with host Williston-Northampton. Greer also saved his team’s bacon because the Wildcats held a 3-0 lead early in the third before giving up four straight goals in a span of 7:12. Williston outshot KUA 38-35. Williston got goals from four different scorers.

@ Thayer 8, St. George’s 2 – Junior forwards Lincoln Griffin (2g,3a) and Adam Gaudette (1g,4a) each had five points. Senior forward Neil Conway only had four points – but three of them were goals.

St. Sebastian’s 3 @ Rivers 2 (OT) – Senior Teddy Griffin, on a cross-crease feed from Austin Lewis, scored at 3:28 of OT to lift the Arrows to a season-opening win at Rivers. After Hank Miller put Rivers on the board in the first period, St. Seb’s new freshman Eric Jeremiah, a defenseman from Xaverian, evened it up at 1-1, converting on a nice pass from senior Corey Ronan. Senior Nick Flanagan put Seb’s up 2-1 on a rebound goal, with assists going to Ronan and junior Will D’Orsi. However, junior winger Pat Daley, on an assist from senior Miles Gendron, tied it 2-2 to send it to OT. Junior Danny Higgins (22/24) picked up the win; junior Ryan Colena (22/25) took the loss.

@ Choate 3, Milton 2 – A PP goal from sophomore Henry Marshall at the 11 minute mark of the third period lifted the host Wild Boars to the win. Earlier in the third, Choate, on a pair of goals from junior Nick Sanchez, held a 2-0 lead. Milton, however, came back with a pair of goals, from sophomore F Trevor Turnbull and senior D Connor Wynne. Choate junior goalie Sam Tucker (31/33) earned the win; Milton junior Drew Hotte (30/33) took the loss.

@ St. Paul’s 6, Governor’s 2 – Seniors David Storto (1g,3a) and Cam McCusker (1g,3a) each notched four points to lead host St. Paul’s past Governor’s. Juniors John Laurito (2g) and Austin Ricci (1g,1a) each had two points. Governor’s senior D Jonathan Ellis scored both of his team’s goals, both PP tallies. St. Paul’s outshot Governor’s, 28-18.

Berkshire 5 @ Albany Academy 2 – Senior Tipper Higgins and Jake Sontag each had two goals for the Bears, and Nick O’Connor chipped in with a pair of assists. Senior George Blinick kicked out 32 of 34 shots for the win.

@ Belmont Hill 5, Berwick 4 – In a back and forth game, Belmont Hill, on a PP goal by senior F Dan Seibel with 1:15 left in regulation, held on for a 5-4 home win over a pesky Berwick squad. All four of Berwick’s goals were scored by senior F Cam Toohey, two on the PP and two even strength. Seniors Matt Melanson (2g) and Joe Welch (1g,1a) and junior Charlie Michalowski (1g,1a) all had two points apiece for the Hillies.

Hoosac 1 @ Tilton 1 – 6’0” Hoosac sophomore goaltender Leo Feneley, a ’97 from Montreal, kicked out 35 of 36 shots in a strong performance. Tilton senior goaltender Kanoa Cook (24/25) had a good day too. The shooters had less luck, being kept off the board until the third period when Tilton PG Jared Barker converted on a cross-slot feed from senior C.J. Mulieri. A little over three minutes later, Hoosac senior evened things up at 1-1 with a low hard snap shot from the top of the circle. And that was it.

Northfield-Mt. Hermon 3, Brunswick 2 – In a neutral site game played at Wesleyan, 6’4” junior Ben Freeman (2g,1a) led the NMH attack with three points. Brunswick senior F Liam Ferguson had two goals in a losing cause. The Hoggers outshot Brunswick, 37-20.

Salisbury 5 @ Taft 0For full game account, see below.

Salisbury Makes Opening Statement
Watertown, Conn. – Salisbury, the defending New England champions, made a strong case for repeating with a season-opening 5-0 blanking of Taft.

Salisbury, controlling the play from the opening drop, were led offensively by new junior Vimal Sukumaran (2g,2a), a 5’10”, 190 lb. ’96 birthdate from Pierrefonds, Quebec.

Sukumaran scored the first goal of the game when the puck came out of the corner, deflecting off a skate and right onto his stick. The former Lac St.Louis Lion had a wide- open net and converted an easy tap-in at 8:52. Then, with 45 seconds left in the period, Sukumaran made a no-look pass from below the goal line to senior Neil Robinson, who finished the play, wristing it past Taft netminder Joseph Lissak to give Salisbury a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

Taft senior captain Cole Maier was kicked out of the game 29 seconds into the second period as he was whistled for a hit from behind major, his second of the game. That was about it for second period action. Salisbury, particularly the top line of Derek Barach (Mercyhurst) and Evan and Mitchell Smith (Yale), created a batch of good scoring chances throughout the period but were unable to capitalize.

In the third, Sukumaran scored his second goal of the game by beating everyone to a loose puck just inside the Taft blueline, then walking in alone on Lissak. As the junior cut across the crease, forcing Lissak to open up, he slipped the puck five-hole for a pretty goal at the 1:30 mark. Salisbury extended the lead to 4-0 when 6’3” senior forward Harrison Luce banged home a goal off a shot from the point that bounced off bodies in front. The scoring was finished off when Sukumaran, cutting across the blue line with the puck and drawing attention from the Taft D, dropped the puck to captain Will Toffey who made no mistake, releasing a quick snap shot for the fifth and final goal. If there was a bright spot for Taft during the game it would be the play of freshman goalie Andrew Farrier, a late ’97 from Montreal. Farrier came on in relief of Lissak in the third and was tested early and often but showed poise and confidence between the pipes, stopping 11 of 12 shots.

For the game, Salisbury outshot Taft 53-12. New senior goaltender Mitchell Datz, a Kitchener, Ontario native who came to Salisbury in the wake of Callum Booth leaving for the Q, picked up the shutout for the visitors.

On Saturday, Salisbury heads to Williston-Northampton, a 6:30 pm start. Taft hosts Berkshire at 7:00 pm.

Dexter Aces Test

Brookline, Mass. – Dexter, behind a pair of goals from junior center Ryan Donato and a strong 29-save effort from senior goaltender Pat Fraser, topped previously undefeated St. Andrew’s College, 5-1, this morning.

The game got off to a brisk start, with up-and-down action throughout a high tempo first period. While neither team had an edge in the early going, Dexter capitalized on their chances, as Ryan McDonough scored on a wrister and Kevin Hock, on the PP, banged home a rebound to give Dexter a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

The tempo slowed a bit in the second, and the only goal in the period came when St. Andrew’s senior center Zac Masson jammed home a rebound with both teams skating 4-on-4. That cut Dexter’s lead to one goal with 1:38 left in the period.

Early in the third period, before St. Andrew’s had a chance to entertain notions of tying the game up, Dexter raised their play another notch, scoring three unanswered goals, the first coming just 49 seconds into the period, when Donato took a pass from Fraser, his goaltender, and scored on a beautiful wrister from the top of the left face-off circle. Six minutes later, Donato struck again, this time from in tight, as he converted a pass from senior D Liam Feeney to make it 4-1. The fifth and final goal came with 5:07 left in the game when junior Matt Brazel made a nice play to get the puck out front to junior Bryan Green.

This was a statement win for Dexter as St. Andrew’s, if they were a New England prep, would be among the elite programs aiming to get to Yale on the first Sunday in March. In their three wins down here this weekend – over Belmont Hill, Winchendon, and Governor’s – the Saints outscored their opponents, 20-6.

Today, as the second period moved along, and then throughout the third period, St. Andrew’s seemed to lose their legs. Their play became noticeably less crisp. Afterwards, however, St. Andrew’s head coach David Manning discounted the fatigue factor, pointing out that his squad often played that many games in weekend tournaments.

Dexter played a very strong game from beginning to end, pushing the play continuously. They also managed to shut down Warren Foegele, SAC’s top-line center, who had been virtually unstoppable coming in, accumulating 12 points in the weekend’s three previous games. Meanwhile, Dexter’s top player, Donato, with an assist to go with his two goals, spearheaded their attack and was a threat every time he had the puck.

Dexter’s next game is at Cushing on Wednesday at 4:30. St. Andrew’s returns to Toronto, but will be back in New England for the St. Sebastian’s Tournament Dec. 20-22.
