Rivers Strikes Quickly, and Holds On

Boston, Mass. --
#2 Rivers exploded for four goals in five minutes in the first period, and turned a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead en route to a 4-3 win over #7 Exeter this afternoon at Boston University's Walter Brown Arena.

After Exeter D Cam Speck's shot from the point gave Exeter a 1-0 lead at 7:23 of the first, Rivers went to work. A little over three minutes later senior Charles Parsons tipped a Michael Young point shot to tie it at 1-1. Then, 35 seconds after that, Rivers took the lead for good when senior wing Frank Ferrara nudged a puck that caromed off the end boards past Exeter freshman goalie Ryan Welch. Rivers d-man John Corrigan then knocked home the rebound of a Brendan Hamblet shot to make it 3-1. Finally, with 2:08 left in the period, ninth grade d-man Ryan Rahbany sent Rivers to the first intermission with a 4-1 lead when his wrister from five feet inside the blue line deflected off an Exeter defenseman.

Exeter came out stronger in the second period, and scored a PPG when sophomore Hunter McCoy passed it from behind the net to junior F Bobby Murray stationed in front. That cut Rivers's lead to 4-2. On the next shift McCoy would ring one off the post.

In the third, on a 2-on-1 breakaway, Exeter sophomores Gray Betts and Garrett Foster teamed up to cut River's lead to 4-3, with Foster finishing.

A couple of minutes later, Exeter's Sam Stone rang one off the crossbar, just missing tying up the game by inches. That was as close as Exeter would come.

"After that first goal, we hung in there," Rivers coach Shawn McEachern said. "This was our fourth game in five nights so we had to dig deep to get it done."

McEachern cited the work of senior co-captain and center Brendan Hamblet. "He was the best player on the ice tonight. He plays a lot. He's just out there all the time. He has a great engine,": McEachern said, adding, "He doesn't give up."

Exeter coach Dana Barbin was not happy about his team's play in the first period. "That was a terrible first goal we gave up. We had the lead, but then we got tentative, nervous. We responded well in the second and third and hit that crossbar late that would have tied it up. But Rivers is a solid team with a good tender. They forced us to chase the puck a lot. They will give lots of teams fits."

Sat. Dec. 10 Highlights

Avon, Conn. -- The line of junior Matt Kirwan, sophomore Trevor Zegras, and junior Drew Elser accounted for three goals in Avon Old Farms' 4-2 win over Trinity-Pawling here today.

Senior goaltender Brandon Schellin (25/27) earned the win.

This was our first time seeing these two teams this season. The game was hard-fought but not pretty. Avon lost a lot from last year's team that went 20-1-4 in NEPSIHA regular-season play. Patrick Harper, Jamie Armstrong, and Jake Witkowski graduated -- and took a ton of offense with them. Defenseman Ben Mirageas left early for the USHL. And Tyler Madden, the top returning forward, broke his hand in the Cushing game Sunday. New junior defenseman Mac Wiseman suffered an injury playing in the fall and won't be available to Avon for a while.

The top point producers thus far this season are Zegras, Elser, and Kirwan -- the all-underclassmen line. Avon will be depending a lot on youngsters this year. They had 12 new players in the lineup today, and it's 13 when sophomore G Spencer Knight starts. So there will be growing pains, but there's also a lot of skill. We expect to see an upward trajectory to the season, particularly when Madden returns in a few weeks.

Six of Avon's new players start their Avon careers with college commitments in hand. Wiseman, from the Skipjacks U16s, and Elser, from Selects Academy U16, are both UConn commits. Zegras and Knight, from the Mid-Fairfield '01 Team, are headed to BU and BC, respectively. F Nick Wildgoose, from the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes, is committed to St. Lawrence. LD Ben Pirko, from Selects Academy's U16s, is committed to Union. Of the uncommitted new players, guys like 6'2" freshman RD Ryan Siedem, from the NJ Colonials, will draw interest, ditto for Kirwan, a junior LW from the Syracuse Stars (USPHL). He's the younger brother of Luke Kirwan (Flint -- OHL). Sophomore LD Jack Babbage, from the Don Mills Flyers Midget Minor squad is another Div. I prospect recruiters will be keeping an eye on.

So Avon, 2-2-0, should have better days coming.

Ditto for T-P, which finished up strongly last season, winning seven of their last ten. They are 0-3 this year, but they've had a tough draw, losing to Loomis and Albany Academy prior to today's loss.

T-P, too, has turned over most of its lineup, and are also very young. The key returnees are 5'8" senior captain Jordi Jefferson, the team's leading scorer last season and a good Div. III prospect. The team's best player, 5'8" sophomore LW Joey Musa (Dartmouth) is back. Avon really keyed on him today, making sure to grind him down physically. T-P has some interesting young d-men, like the top pairing of LD Phip Waugh and RD John Garvey. Both played Tier II last year, both are '00 birthdates, both are sophomores, and both have size. Garvey is 6'2" and Waugh is 6'4". Both are Div. I prospects down the line.

6'1" new sophomore goalie Mitch Bown, an '00 from Woodstock, New Brunswick, has potential, and will split games with returning senior Justin Lampert.

Bob Ferraris, in his second year behind the T-P bench, said, "A lot of our big contributors are young. I thought the effort was great today. While I would like to see a little more poise with the puck, I thought we did a good job on a lot of things like blocking shots."

***

-- Junior Will Daniel (1g,2a) and senior G Mathieu Beaudet (17/18) led Hoosac past Lawrenceville at the Rider Cup at Abany Academy.

-- Host Dexter got three assists from senior John Femia and two goals from junior Jack Nisbet in a 5-2 win over Hebron. Dexter is now 5-0-0.

-- Senior Casey Carreau (2g,2a), and juniors Jay O'Brien (1g,3a) and Aiden McDonough (1g,2a) led Thayer to a 6-3 road win at Proctor. Sophomore F Jack Swarbrick (1g,2a) led all Proctor scorers. Thayer is now 4-1-0.

-- Junior Thomas Draper stopped all 12 shots he faced as host Berkshire shut out NMH, 3-0. Berkshire outshot their guests, 28-12. Berkshire improves to 3-1-1.

-- Junior Timmy Kent scored both of Lawrence's goals early in the second period and senior Owen Zdunski  kicked out 21 of 22 to lead the Spartans past host Belmont Hill, 2-1.

-- PG Phil Satin had a pair of goals and senior Kristian Hansen kicked out 18 of 19 to lead host Pomfret to a 5-1 win over Pingree.

-- Senior D Eric Jeremiah (3a) and sophomore Riley Hughes (2g) led the attack as St. Seb's defeated the visitors from New Hampton 4-3. Senior Alex  Zafonte (33/36) earned the win. Soph F Joe Dunlap had a pair of goals fro New Hampton.

-- Holderness topped host Kent's Hill, 4-1, in what was really a 2-1 game with a couple of empty-netters at the end. Senior Logan Bateman (28/29) got the win for Holderenss. Junior Jaxon Friedman (26/28) was the hard-luck loser for Kents Hill.

-- Sophomore Hunter McCoy broke a 1-1 tie at 10:33 of the third and then added a PPG six minutes later to lead Exeter to a 3-1 decision over host Cushing, which falls to 1-3-1 on the young season.

-- A goal from sophomore D Henry Hill with 1/10th of a second remaining in regulation lifted host Brunswick to an exciting 3-2 win over Westminster. Senior Strauss Mann kicked out 30 of 32 for the win. The winning goal, by the way, was the first of Hill's career.

-- Senior D Simon Loiselle had a pair of goals and junior G Carson McKinnon kicked out 24 of 25 as host St. Paul's topped Tabor 4-1.

-- Senior F Charlie Parsons (2g,1a) and sophomore D Tony Andreozzi (2a) led the Rivers attack and junior G Aidan Porter stopped 12 shots. Rivers outshot Groton 51-13. Rivers improves to 4-0-0.

-- A goal from sophomore F Tyler Bodette at 2:53 of the third lifted Brooks to a 3-2 win at St. Mark's.

-- Host Choate entered the third period with a 3-0 lead, but Deerfield came back with three straight of their own to tie it up midway through the third. But Choate finished strong, with four straight goals in a five-minute plus span. Junior F Jack Hoey scored what would turn out to be the game-winner and then added an insurance goal. Hoey also scored a first-period goal. Further insurance goals came from sophomore F Sean Dennehy and senior D George Uppgren as Choate skated off with a 7-3 win over their archrival.

-- Senior forward J.T. Chamberlain scored two first period goals and junior G Xander Rogers stopped 37 of 38 to lead host Williston to a 4-1 win over defending prep champions Gunnery. The loss was Gunnery's first of the year. As for Williston, they've had a curious season thus far, suffering one-sided losses at KUA and Cushing, but winning decisively at home against Salisbury and, today, Gunnery.

-- Host Loomis got a pair of goals from junior F Johnny Barbieri and senior G Adin Farhat stopped 19 of 20 shots as the Pelicans topped Canterbury 6-1.

-- Salisbury got a hat trick from junior F Brett Willits in a 6-1 win at Kent. Senior G Jonah Capriotti (20/21) earned the win.

Andover Takes a Giant Step

Andover, Mass. --  The Andover squad Paul Tortorella inherited last season went 9-18-1. Lowlights included getting swept at the Flood-Marr, losing seven of eight in mid-season, and then finishing up the campaign by losing five of its last six. Since the day Tortorella, a goaltender at Andover and Yale in the early '80s, took over the team we've run into him at various rinks all over the Northeast.

All that work seeking out players appears to be paying off. While it's still early, the Andover team that we saw beat New Hampton 6-3 tonight has a totally new look. They are aggressive, skilled, smart, keep their feet moving, and play as a team.

"They've bought into the team concept," Tortorella says. "They're unselfish."

It's not a team that NHL scouts or Div. I recruiters will be rushing off to see, but there are plenty of good players, a number of whom are potential Div. III prospects.

The chief area that's been shored up is goal, where 5'9" PG Kyle Martin is money in the bank. Martin has been at St. John's Prep the past two seasons. In his first, as a junior, he led SJP to a 2-1 win over Malden Catholic in the 2015 Super 8 title game at the TD Garden. As a senior, SJP returned to the Garden for a championship game rematch with MC, this time bowing in OT 2-1. So Martin has played on the big stage and knows what pressure is all about.

Tonight, Martin was his usual calm, poised self, staying square to the shooter and smothering pucks. New Hampton, on the other hand, was hobbled by shakey goaltending. That right there was the key to the game.

Andover also played physically, a prerequisite to beating New Hampton. The visitors trailed 3-0 after one period, but made things interesting in the second as senior wing Lucas Uhler connected for a pair of goals that cut it to 3-2. However, that old bugaboo, a goal inside the final minute of a period, bit New Hampton, as Andover forward Brendan Ryan, a PG from Minnetonka (Minn.) High beat New Hampton's second goalie of the game, sophomore Matt Sayles, with a nifty right-left deke to make it 4-2. It was Ryan's second tally of the game, and turned the third period into little more than a formality.

In addition to Martin, and Ryan, Andover newcomers include 6'2" defensive d-man Carter Giampietro, from Okanagan Hockey Academy in British Columbia, an '00 who was drafted by Kelowna in the WHL, LD Danny McGrath from the NH Monarchs, PG forward Kyle Lynch, who had 30 points at St. John's Prep last season, junior F Cole Quisenberry from the Colorado Thunderbirds U16s, and junior F Quinn Doyle from the Rochester Monarchs U16s and Pittsford (NY) HS. Junior D Bryce Murphy from the Chicago Mission U16s is out with an injury.

The top two new forwards for New Hampton are Maine recruit Lynden Breen, an '01 LC from Nova Scotia. Breen, a 5'9" sophomore who played Midget AAA for Saint John Vito's last winter is super quick, has a good stick, and wins draws with regularity. Another noteworthy newcomer is 5'7" junior center Bradley Shaw, also from Nova Scotia. Shaw, who can really scoot, played last year for Halifax McDonald's Midget AAA. New Hampton's top D pairing consists of a pair of returnees in 6'2" senior LD Luke Albert and 6'4" junior RD Michael Kesselring, an '00.

Wed. Dec. 7 Highlights

-- KUA Improves to 5-0-0

Andover, NH -- We got our first look of the season at Kimball Union as the Wildcats topped host Proctor 8-4 this afternoon.

Seniors Mike Lombardi (1g,4a) and Roope Hirvonen (3g,1a) and sophomore d-man Jordan Harris (2g,1a) led the attack. Senior Bobby Young (2a), and and junior D Bryce Dolan (2a) also had multiple points.

Is KUA as good as last year, when they bowed out to Milton in the prep quarterfinals? It's too early to say, but losing center Patrick Shea (Maine) and d-men Ben Finkelstein (St. Lawrence) and Dennis Cesana (West Point, fall '17) is significant. It's most noticeable on the blue line, from where Finkelstein gave the Wildcats offense a distinct shape.

This season, KUA is definitely thinner on the blue line where returnees Jordan Harris, a sophomore committed to Northeastern, and junior RD Bryce Dolan make up the top pairing.

The top three returning scorers -- Mike Lombardi, Roope Hirvonen, and Bobby Young make up the top line. Alex Heinritz, Andranik Armstrong, and Thomas Samuelsen make up the second line. Logan Cash, Paul McAuliffe, and Kyle Shero make up the third line. New sophomores Arlo Merritt and Kyle Penney -- both Nova Scotians -- skated on the fourth line. After Harris and Dolan, defense pairings were Elijah Older and Sean Thomson, and Jack Geraghty and Chris Konin. In net was junior Sean Dynan, who played at Reading (Mass.) HS the past couple of seasons.

Hirvonen and Lombardi were KUA's most impressive forwards today. Both are Div. I prospects getting plenty of attention -- and both have upped their game since last season. RC Hirvonen, 5'10" and a muscular 200 lbs., is a strong skater who wins draws, hits hard, makes plays, protects the puck, and is extremely hard to knock off the puck -- he has that good low center of gravity. Lombardi's skating seems stronger then we remember from last season.

Another skilled returnee is 5'9" junior LC Andranik Armstrong, who keys the second line. He's skilled, strong on his skates, competes hard, and has a heavy shot.

KUA has a few notable newcomers. LW Logan Cash, an '00 birthdate who played Midget AAA for Halifax McDonald's last winter, is a 6'2" LW who was suffering from the flu today, and had to leave the game midway through the second period. We did see Cash in the fall and can tell you he's an excellent Div. I prospect. Actually, he's already getting attention.

6'2" sophomore Arlo Merritt, who had a goal today, is an '01 who played major bantam in Halifax last winter, and is a strong future prospect. There are a few others we want to see more of, but you get the idea: KUA will score their share of goals this year.

The best player on the ice today -- no surprise -- was Proctor d-man Reilly Walsh (Harvard), who is absolutely indispensable to his team. However, Walsh can't do it all, and the Hornets were already shorthanded with senior forwards Tate Singleton and Peter Laviolette injured. Proctor only had 16 skaters on hand today. And the Hornets ran out of gas, most particularly when trying to kill penalties.

"We just made too many mistakes against a good team," Proctor head coach Mike Walsh said. "KUA is a really good transition team and when you throw cross-ice blind passes you're just handing it to them on a platter. We made it too easy for them by turning pucks over and having pucks go through sticks. It cost us, but we'll get better."

-- Sophomores Patrick Moynihan (1g,3a) and Will Zink (2g), and junior Jerry Harding (2g) led Nobles to a 6-3 win at Tabor. Junior F Patrick Daly scored all three Tabor goals.

-- Junior Santeri Hartikainen (4g, 1a), soph Mark Gallant (1g,3a), and junior Chris Brown (4a) paced host Groton's attack in a 7-2 win over Roxbury Latin.

-- Junior F David Hill had three assists in host Hill's 7-3 win over Lawrenceville in Mid-Atlantic League play.

-- After Hotchkiss PG F Alex Bourhas scored two first-period goals to put the host Bearcats up 2-0, Salisbury roared back with four unanswered goals from four different scorers. Senior G Jonah Capriotti (24/26) earned the win.

-- Senior F Sam Muehlbronner had two goals to lead LaSalle College Prep to a 3-1 win over the Hun School in Mid-Atlantic League actioin.

-- Senior Thomas Dale scored a pair of goals in host Deerfield's 4-0 blanking of NMH. Senior Sam Vigneault (31/31) earned the shutout.

-- Junior F Will Daniel scored two goals in host Hoosac's 3-2 win over NYA.

-- Seniors Charlie Lawerence (2g,2a) and Matt Paul (2g,1a) led Rivers to a 5-0 blanking of St. George's. Rivers junior G Aidan Porter posted an 11-save shutout.  Rivers, now 3-0-0, outshot the Dragons 35-11.

-- Middlesex and Brooks battled to a 1-1 tie at North Andover today. Brooks senior G Johnny Trotto (19/20) and Middlesex soph Joe Stanizzi (31/32) were the standouts.

Washco, Andree Lead Gunnery Past Exeter

Exeter, NH -- In the final game at the Exeter Invitational Sunday, Albert Washco scored a hat trick and goaltender Cedrick Andree kicked out 27 of 28 shots as Gunnery topped Exeter, 4-1.

Gunnery, the defending prep champs, remains unbeaten at 3-0. Exeter drops to 4-1-0.

Washco's goals came even strength, on the power play, and into an empty net. Exeter had its hands full trying to deal with his speed -- and, for that matter, Gunnery's overall team speed and depth.

On Gunnery's first goal, Washco curled behind the Exeter net and slipped the puck behind Exeter freshman goalie Ryan Welch. Exeter answered at 11:36 of the first when senior Bradley Ingersoll, who has been converted from forward to the team's top offensive defenseman, knocked home a cross-crease pass from Bobby Murray, a junior transfer from North Yarmouth Academy, where he was the leading scorer.

Gunnery had the edge in play early in the first -- they played 20-minute periods -- and Exeter had the upper hand later. Andree, a new junior from Ottawa, Ont. and a '00 birthdate, made several great saves on first-period flurries.

In the second, play was pretty even. There was no scoring. The period ended with Gunnery on a 5x3 power play, which carried over to the third.

Gunnery had a second 5x3 power play early in the third, and converted, with freshman RD Jimmy Rayhill, from the left point, finding junior center Jack Lippis to the left of the net. Lippis quickly fired the puck behind Welch for what would hold up as the game-winner.

Wascho made it 3-1 when he banged home a PPG at 7:06, with assists going to Rayhill and Lippis. With 1:45 left, Washco scored an empty-netter, completing his hat trick.

Gunnery had ten penalties called against them, and killed them all off. Exeter was called for eight penalties. Gunnery capitalized on two of the opportunities.

We found new junior Kyle Jadatz, a '99 who played for the LI Royals U16s last season, to be Exeter's most effective forward today. Jadatz, who centers Exeter's top line between Murray and Tim Kalinowski, a PG from Marblehead High, assisted on Exeter's lone goal. He's a very good two-way centerman. On D, coach Dana Barbin's moving Ingersoll to the blue line adds some offensive punch. And then there's Welch, a 5'9" late '00 freshman from Swampscott, Mass. who played at the Fessenden School last season. Welch stopped 27 of 30 shots.

"I thought our special teams were very good today," said Gunnery coach Craig Badger. "And shift in and shift out, Washco was terrific. He's a great combination of speed and strength. He benches 265 lbs. That helps make him tough to handle."

"Andree makes dynamic saves," Badger added. "He's so quick and athletic. He was average yesterday (in a 6-4 win over Hebron) so that motivated him today."

-- In the early game today, Kent trounced Hebron 9-3, with senior Tommy Tanner scoring three goals and adding an assist.

Sat. Dec. 3rd Highlights

-- Belmont Hill Holds Off Nobles

Dedham, Mass. -- Sophomore Andrew Holland's goal with five seconds left in the second period, followed by a Christian O'Neill short-handed goal at 1:39 of the third gave Belmont Hill a 3-0 lead over host Nobles.

But Nobles wasn't done, connecting for two goals -- one from sophomore Patrick Moynihan and the other, with 6:46 remaining from junior Sean Wrenn --  to make it a one-goal game.

And, for the briefest of moments, it looked like Nobles had tied it up late when a shot appeared to rocket in and out of the net. However, the referee was stationed behind the net and immediately waived it off.

A couple minutes later, Belmont Hill salted it away with an O'Neill empty-netter with 42 seconds left to give the visitors a 4-2 win.

This was a hard-fought prep game with plenty of up-and-down action, physical play and, unfortunately, a batch of penalties -- a total of 22 (12 on Belmont Hill, 10 on Nobles) which reminded this observer of a few college games seen this fall.

Even though there was just one PPG -- a Mike Armstrong slapshot from the right point that put Belmont Hill up 1-0 at 9:48 of the first -- the penalties took a toll, forcing each of the teams to rely heavily on their top lines and defense pairings.

We don't have the exact figures but Nobles took more penalties over the first two periods, allowing Belmont Hill to gain its 3-0 lead. But in the third the bulk of the calls appeared to go against Belmont Hill -- and Nobles poured it on.

The O'Neill-Sam Hesler-John Copeland line logged some heavy minutes for Belmont  Hill; ditto the Wrenn-Moynihan-Jerry Harding line for Nobles.

O'Neill (2g,1a) figured in three of Belmont Hill's four goals. Harding assisted on both Nobles goals. Belmont Hill sophomore goaltender Connor Hopkins (23/25) earned the win. Nobles junior Matt Lane (12/15) took the loss.

"Nobles was outstanding in the third period," Belmont Hill coach Jeremiah McCarthy said. "We were really hanging on there at the end. It was an exciting, emotional game. When Nobles and Belmont Hill play each other, you really learn so much about the two teams."

Note:

We had seen Nobles beat Pomfret 2-0 on Wednesday, a game in which Nobles won but didn't play particularly well. Today, despite coming out on the short end, they were battling, making plays, and skating hard throughout. Moynihan, who took a hard shot off his ankle on Wednesday and only made it off the ice by crawling to the bench, showed no ill effects today. He was noticeable throughout today. New sophomore center Ryan Stevens, whose brother Luke graduated in June, was barely noticeable on Wednesday. Today was totally different, as Stevens was in the thick of things.

***
-- Avon Routed; Salisbury Too

-- With 13 seconds left in the second period Albany Academy PG David Cohen broke a 3-3 tie with Avon Old Farms. It would hold up as the winning goal as the host Cadets would add four goals in the third, and send the Winged Beavers on a long bus ride home.

Seniors Brendan Schneider (2g,1a) and Casey Rhodes (1g,2a) each had three points for Albany.

Albany outshot Avon 35-26. PG goaltender Brandon Collett (23/26) earned the win. For Avon, Brandon Schellin (14/17) played one period and new sophomore Spencer Knight (13/18) played two.

Avon will try to get on track vs. Cushing in a Sunday afternoon game (2:00 pm at Avon).

-- Senior Nick Schofield (2g,2a) led host Williston-Northampton to a 6-1 upset win over Salisbury. Salisbury outshot Williston by a nearly two-to-one margin, but Williston sophomore G Greg Iverson kided out 52 of 53 for the big win. Senior Nick Sorgio (21/27) took the loss.

It's fair to say that Williston bounced back nicely from Wednesday's 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Kimball Union.

-- A Tate Singleton hat trick led host Proctor to a 5-3 win over Brewster Academy. Brayden Norris had a pair of goals for Brewster.

-- A goal from junior Kyle Jadatz 32 seconds into the third period turned out to be the game-winner as Exeter blanked Kent 2-0 at the Exeter Invitational. Jadatz added an empy-netter with 27 seconds left. Freshman goalie Ryan Welch kicked out all 26 shots he faced for the win. Senior Peter Negron (28/29) wsa the hard-luck loser for Kent.

-- At Wallingford, Conn., Andover got goals from four different scorers -- and three assists from sophomore Christian Powers -- in a  4-2 win over host Choate.PG goaltender Kyle Martin, formerly of St. John's Prep, kicked out 28 of 30 shots for the win.

-- Millbrook junior G Greg Brassard kicked out all 22 shots he faced as Millbrook blanked Lawrenceville, 7-0.

-- A Jack Moffitt goal at 3:57 of overtime lifted Worcester Academy to a 5-4 win at Holderness. Holderness outshot Worcester 59-28, but Worcester junior goalie Nathan Pickett was strong, kicking out 55 of 59 shots.

-- Johnny Mulera (2g,2a) and Mike Hardman (1g,3a) each had four points to lead host Winchendon to a 7-3 win over St. Mark's.

-- Joey Cipollone (3g,1a), Harrison Roy (2g,2a), and Andrew Lucas (4a) each had four points and senior goaltender Aidan Farhat (25/25) posted 44 shutout minutes as Loomis trounced host Trinity-Pawling, 8-1.

-- Senior Thomas Dale and sophomore Michael Holland each had a goal and an assist to help Deerfield to a 5-1 win at Groton.

-- Both of Canterbury's goals in a 2-1 win at Hotchkiss came off the stick of Dongyoon Shin, a junior from Seoul, South Korea. Junior Connor Amsley assisted on both. Senior Dan Seitz kicked out 27 of 28 shots for the win.

-- Senior D Brendan Casey assisted on all of Tabor's goals in a 3-1 win over Berwick on the first day of the Tabor Invitational. Senior goaltender Jeremie Forget (23/24) earned the win.

Seb's Bounces Back at Milton

Milton, Mass. -- After host Milton blitzed St. Sebastian's for three unanswered first period goals, Arrows head coach Sean McCann replaced his starting goaltender, senior Alex Zafonte, with freshman Drew Commesso at the start of the second.

It worked. Commesso, who many observers feel is the top '02 goaltender in the state (Gavin FitzPatrick at BB&N is another contender) made some big saves early in the second and his teammates began mounting a comeback when freshman forward Liam Connors connected at 4:50 of the period.

In the third, senior Brendan Goostray made it a one-goal game at the 3:30 mark. Two minutes later, sophomore Riley Hughes scored a power-play goal to tie the game at 3-3.

Sophomore Liam Gorman scored the game-winner with 2:50 left, a short-side shot under the arm of Milton senior goalie Ethan Domokos, who finished with 34 saves. Arrows senior D Eric Jeremiah added the fifth consecutive Arrows goal, an empty-netter with 19 seconds left in regulation to make it a 5-3 final.

Gorman (1g,1a), freshman Liam Devlin, senior RJ Murphy, and junior D Blake Colman each had two points for the Arrows.

Commesso finished his two shutout periods with 20 saves.

On pulling his starter and replacing him with Commesso, McCann said, "Sometimes the spark works."

"I thought the win showed great character from a young group," McCann added. "Just get the next one. That was our message after the first period."

In the first period, a number of St. Seb's passes were getting picked off and they had trouble clearing the zone.

"When they just made short, clean 8-10 foot passes instead of trying to connect on long passes, things improved," McCann said.

Milton coach Paul Cannata said simply, "Winning one period is not winning a hockey game."

Notes:

We wrote about the youngsters on St. Sebastian's after Wednesday's game. Of Milton's new players the one who stood out the most for us was 6'1" junior RD Ryan Wilson, a '99 birthdate who played for the Anaheim Junior Ducks U16s. Wilson, a San Diego, Calif. native, has good size, plenty of poise, and should draw Div. I interest.

***
-- Senior D Reilly Walsh scored both of Proctor's goals three minutes apart in the third period to lift the Hornets to a 2-1 home win over Tilton. Junior Devin Barresi (39/40) got the win while Rams sophomore Brendan Benoit (43/45) was the hard-luck loser.

-- Senior Peter Regan's hat trick lifted Lawrenceville to a 4-2 win over Hoosac. In one game, Regan doubled his career scoring output.

-- Rivers junior defenseman John Corrigan broke a 2-2 tie with a goal at 9:39 of the second. Five minutes later, Corrigan struck again, giving Rivers a 4-2 lead over host Thayer. Senior Frank Ferrara scored Rivers' fifth unanswered goal -- and what would turn out to be the game-winner -- at 5:33 of the third period. An assist went to sophomore Henry Muller.

Thayer scored two in the third to cut it back to a one-goal game but could get no closer.

Junior Tristan Amonte (1g,3a) figured in all four of Thayer's goals.

Thayer outshot Rivers, 31-20.

-- Holderness topped Academie Saint-Louis 5-1. Senior Jon Courchesne (2g), junior Alex Gagnon (1g,1a) led the attack. Senior goalie Logan Bateman kicked out 26 of 27 shots for the win.

Wed. Nov. 30th, 2016 Highlights

The best prep game this typist has seen thus far in the season -- a small sample size, to be sure -- was Rivers' 3-2 win at St. Sebastian's Wednesday, a game that featured up-and-down action, plenty of skating and playmaking, and good goaltending. In short, precisely what one looks for in a game.

Rivers, which was strong last year, reaching the small school final and losing to St. Mark's in OT, is even better positioned this time around, primarily because they didn't lose much to graduation. And for every player the team lost, they added a skilled young player. St. Sebastian's is in the same boat. None of the players they lost is irreplaceable, and they have a slew of good young players coming up behind them. These are two teams that are built for now -- and the future, too.

After a scoreless first period, Rivers got on the board at 5:49 of the second, when junior D John Corrigan slid a pass across the slot to sophomore Henry Muller, who held it briefly before firing it past Seb's senior goalie Alex Zafonte. Rivers made it 2-0 when Brendan Hamblet threaded a nifty pass to Charlie Parsons at 9:38.

Late in the second, Rivers senior F Matt Paul was given a major/game misconduct/DQ for a hit from behind. The Arrows scored on the ensuing 5x3 when sophomore Riley Hughes beat Rivers junior goalie Aidan Porter on a wrister from the left corner of the crease.

At 6:13 of the third, Hamblet put Rivers up 3-1 on a short-side wrist shot. Charlie Lawerence got an assist on the play. A little over four minutes later, Seb's cut the lead back to one when freshman Liam Connors converted a nice pass from senior D Eric Jeremiah. That was as close as the Arrows would get.

Rivers outshot St. Seb's 35-19.

"I thought our forecheck was the key," Rivers coach Shawn McEachern said. "Just working hard and then getting back on defense."

McEachern also cited the 5x3. "We gave up the one goal but killed off the rest," he said.

Notes:

If we had to pick a star of the game it would be Hamblet. The senior co-captain made the aforementioned pass on the second Rivers goal, then scored what would turn out to be the game-winner in the third. He's a smart, clever player who does a bit of everything -- scoring goals, making plays, winning draws, taking the body, and working hard. Junior goalie Aidan Porter was strong. Some of Rivers' younger new players, like 5'5", 125 lb. '02 birthdate Phillip Tresca, a freshman LW; and 6'4" freshman LD Cade Webber, are going to be difference-makers.

The Arrows have RJ Murphy back from the USHL, which will help. Senior goalie Alex Zafonte came up with some key saves to keep the game close. Plus some of the young players from last year, like forwards Liam Gorman, Riley Hughes, and Tommy Lyons and defenseman James Davenport are second-year players now and will be playing bigger roles. Sophomore F Wyatt Schlaht, another of the Arrows' young prospects, suffered a high ankle sprain last Saturday and will be out 4-6 weeks.

Rivers F Matt Paul will have to sit out Rivers' next game, which is at Thayer (Friday, 4:00 pm). St. Seb's next game is also on Friday, at Milton (5:15 pm).

Former BU and NHL forward Mike Grier is back at his alma mater of St. Sebastian's (class of '93),  joining Jed Doherty as an assistant on Sean McCann's staff.

After the Seb's-Rivers game, this typist caught the last two periods of the Nobles' 2-0 home win over Pomfret. By comparison, this was a sluggish game. Nobles got second-period goals from sophomore D John Murray junior D Trevor Spence.

Nobles lost their four leading scorers from last season -- Luke Stevens, Cam Burke, Mike Fahie, and Danny Jacobs. So there's some slack to pick up there. And it wasn't picked up yesterday.

New junior goaltender Matt Lane -- with a 37-save shutout -- was excellent for Nobles. He was the story. New junior Thomas Lemire (27/29) was strong in a losing effort.

In short, Pomfret worked hard and didn't back down. Coach Matt Goethals said he was happy was his team's effort, but felt his team's power play needs work. Nobles had seven penalties called against them, while Pomfret had five. There were no power play goals.
