Bernstein, Scopa Stand Out in Tie
Belmont, Mass. -- Nobles freshman goalie Thatcher Bernstein (26 saves) and Belmont Hill sophomore Sam Scopa (22 saves) gave their respective teams a chance to pick up a win here Saturday.
Instead, they settled for a 1-1 tie, with Nobles' senior defenseman Aidan Lyons scoring in the second and Belmont Hill junior RW Dane Carter evening things up in the third.
The first period started quietly, but picked up a little as it went on. Not a lot of good scoring opportunities. Nobles had the edge in play, being better able to set up and keep the puck in the offensive zone, whereas Bel Hill was a bit one-and-done at the other.
The pace picked up in the second, with more up-and-down play. Midway through the period, Lyons rushed the puck through center ice, barreled down the slot, caught several Belmont Hill players flat-footed as he stickhandled through them, then beat Scopa with a wrister to give Nobles a 1-0 lead at the 7:32 mark.
Belmont Hill got it back 2:33 into the third, as Carter drove to the net, took a nice short pass from his centerman, sophomore Jake McManus, and buried it. That was it for the day's scoring.
In OT, Carter had a nice scoring opportunity off a 2-on-1, but couldn't finish it off.
Neither goalie had to stand on their head in this game. They just did what they had to, and were a steadying influence. Bernstein, a 6-4 freshman and '06 birthdate, has a lot of upside. Ditto for Scopa, an '05 soph.
New Belmont Hill head coach Brian Phinney said, "We started slowly, but stuck with our process and slowly but surely began to play our style. When we play well we attack with speed and apply pressure. We can play a puck possession game down low. And we started to do that more and more."
"Scopa had a good game. He eats pucks, and puts them in the right place."
Nobles head coach Brian Day said, "I think anytime we give up one goal, we should win. We have to get more pucks on net. Get more traffic."
Of Lyons's goal, Day said, "That was just a really good invividual effort."
Asked about Bernstein, Day said, "He's a big kid, very calm, always square, steers pucks into the corner. For most freshmen, this would be too big a moment. But he's confident. Humble. He works to get better."

2021 Flood-Marr Final: Nobles Edges Milton, 2-1
Milton, Mass. -- Stout defense, strong goaltending from freshman -- and tournament MVP -- Thatcher Bernstein, and a timely goal from senior Roman Tacelli with 3:26 remaining gave Nobles its fourth title in the 40-year history of the Flood-Marr Tournament Sunday.
We're (almost) certain that Bernstein is the first freshman goaltender to win the Tournament MVP. It's also very likely he's the first freshman -- period -- to win the award.
After a first period in which quality scoring opportunities were scarce, Nobles asserted itself in the second, finally breaking through on a powerplay with 7:19 left, Austin Tasca converting a pass from center Ben MacDonald to give Nobles a 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, Milton got it back, junior Mikka Kelechian, from the slot, wristing a pass from senior forward Brad Holcomb past Bernstein.
The goal energized Milton, but the score stayed 1-1 for the duration of the second, and into the third. Good, tight hockey. Just when overtime was beginning to look likely, Tacelli, from a wide angle just a few feet north of the goal line in the left corner, saw a little daylight over the right shoulder of Milton senior goalie Jake Cardonick, whose pads were tight to the post. Tacelli fired it exactly where he wanted to.
"We just happened to get the last shot," said Nobles head coach Brian Day. "Our goaltending, of course, was very good. (Bernstein) was calm and poised, but he didn't do it by himself. The guys in front of him played a good responsible game."
Day thought special teams play was critical. "We killed off four PPs," he said, "and scored on one of our two."
Milton head coach Paul Cannata gave credit to Nobles' defense and goaltending, saying, "You won't win many hockey games scoring just one goal."
"Over the years, we've had a lot of good games against them," Cannata added, "and this was another."

Like a Walrus in a Goldfish Bowl
The next four days can feel like an entire season crammed into a vessel too small for its contents, like a walrus in a goldfish bowl.
The Numbers: We counted. There will be 106 boys' games, and 82 girls' games by Sunday night. We'll be doing our level best to keep all results and schedules updated. This is something this typist has done for decades on tournament week, and it requires staying up late -- really late! -- so we appreciate any help. We will check first thing each morning as well. Coaches are great at providing scores, but sometimes there are gaps of hours or more before they can upload the information. So, dear readers, if you see a missing score, let us know and we'll plug it in at the next opportunity. Also, God forbid, if anything arises that may force a schedule change, no matter how minor, please let us know.
On Statistics: Most teams will be on the road, staying in hotels. Then as soon as the tournaments end, everyone disappears in a flash, taking off in planes, trains, automobiles and electric scooters for the holidays. Most coaches are great at uploading their team's box scores as quickly as possible after games but when those games come at a rat-a-tat pace, it's a little more difficult to make corrections for errors on the game sheet. No one wants to see the box scores quicker than your scribe here, but sometimes patience is required, as accuracy trumps speed. If there's a scoring mistake, ask your son to take it up with his coach. Coaches would prefer to hear it directly from their players, anyway. As for USHR, we do not touch box scores (except to help with technical difficulties).
We Need Your Help: Whenever possible, generally late at night or early in the morning, we will be filling in all the scores on our daily scoreboard. If any scores are missing, or a score has been entered incorrectly, drop us an email at news@ushr.com. Also feel free to let us know if anything exceptional happens, like someone has a 5-goal game or the Zamboni crashes through the end boards and out of the building, taking out several cars in the parking lot.
Photographs: We need 'em, especially high-quality shots in which something is actually happening. Let us know exactly what is happening in the photo, and who took it. If any schools have in-house photographers at games anywhere, please let them know of our interest. Dave Arnold is our photographer in the Boston area, but he can't be everywhere, and we are looking for more photos from schools in Northern New England and Connecticut.
Thank you!

@ Hebron 3, Portsmouth Abbey 2 -- The Abbey had a 2-0 lead halfway through, host Hebron pulled one out of the hat, scoring two goals in the final minute plus to give the home fans a 3-2 win. The drama started when Hebron, down 2-1, got a PPG from junior Ryan Teehan with 1:05 left to tie it at 2-2. PA took a bench minor, keeping Hebron on the PP -- and they cashed in with 7 seconds left, PG defenseman Albert Lian with a helper from D Nick Theodos.
@ Gunn 5, Williston 2 -- Gunn got goals from 5 different scorers --- and 3 assists from senior F Nathan Stachowiak -- en route to the 5-2 home win. Gunn (5-1-0) outshot Williston, 42-20. Williston (0-4-0) is looking for its first win.
St. Mark's 6 @ Brooks 1 -- Freshman Richard Gallant (2g,1a) and sophomore Andrew Gibbons (1g,2a) paced the Lions' attack. St. Mark's (4-1-0) outshot Brooks, 39-22. Lions' junior G Charles Watson kicked out 21 shots for the win.
Avon 6, Trinity-Pawling 3 -- Soph Joe Connor (1g,2a), and seniors Brennan Ali (3a), Liam Verdoni (2g), and Matt DiMarsico (1g,1a) led Avon's attack. Avon improves to 4-0-0.

Junior Aidan O'Connell (2g,1a) and senior Cooper Belanger (1g,2a) each had three points for the Bulls. In net, senior Ethan Swanson (33/36) earned the win. Holderness (4-0-0) had the edge in shots, 39-36.
The Hill 3, Cushing 3 (OT) -- Senior Tyler Chenevert scored the first 2 Hill goals and PG Brandon Spaulding made it 3-0 with 15 seconds left in the first period. But Cushing woke up with a pair of second period powerplay goals, a 5x3 tally from senior D Owen Paskowski, and a 5x4 goal from junior Linas Dedinas. Senior Mason Kesselring assisted on both. Cushing (4-0-1) got the tying goal early in the third, as senior Billy Norcross scored from Ryan Philbrick and Cameron Ferraz. Senior Jackson Irving (27/30) was in goal for Cushing; junior Ryan Sanborn (31/34) for Hill. Sanborn, by the way, is the nephew of Wayne Sanborn, the former Cushing AD, coach, and teacher.
Proctor 3 @ St. Paul's 2 -- A goal from junior Maks Watton with five seconds left broke a 2-2 tie and lifted Proctor to the road win. Sophomore D Max O'Connell and junior F Nolan Davis also scored for the Hornets. Soph Josh Halliday and junior Bryce Terry scored for St. Paul's. In net, soph Caden Pasqualone (38/40) earned the win. St. George's 2, Millbrook 2 (OT) -- In a game played at Connecticut College, all goals were scored in the second period. Seniors Connor Korapatnicki and D.J. Walsh scored to make it 2-0 Millbrook, but St. George's came right back with goals 32 seconds apart from Ben Buckley and Jack Almeida
Loomis Chaffee 5 @ Canterbury 2 -- Host Canterbury jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period, but the Pelicans answered by tallying five straight unanswered goals. Senior Oliver Flynn scored two unanswered goals, on a shorty and an even-strength goal. In net, junior Caleb Allen (22/24) picked up the win. For Canterbury, senior Dan Gerts (40/44) took the loss. Loomis improves to 3-1-0. Canterbury is now 2-1-1.
Kent 3 @ Salisbury 2 (OT) -- A Cole Watson goal at 1:37 of OT gave Kent the road win, and handed Salisbury (3-1-0) its first loss of the young season. Earlier, Salisbury had taken a 1-0 lead on a Ben Poitras first period PPG. It stayed that way until early in the third when senior Geno McEnery tied it at 1-1. Salisbury would retake the lead on a Liam Chapman goal at 7:21. But several minutes later Kent's Jake Kraft would tie it up at 2-2, and send the game to OT, where Watson, a senior, struck for the game-winner. Watson, who also had 2 assists, figured in all 3 of Kent's goals. For Salisbury, senior Dylan Hryckowian, with 2 assists, figured in both of the Scarlet Knights' goals. In net, junior Harrison Fogel (32/34) earned the win; Salisbury senior Austin McNicholas (23/26) took the loss. Senior captain Coleman Jenkins had 2 goals for Tabor; senior Nathaniel Peretz had two for NYA. Tabor junior goaltender Gus Ackerman kicked out 27 of 30 shots for the win. Tabor outshot NYA, 45-30. As you probably know, the late Travis Roy attended all three schools (including BU).

Callow-Gorman-Grier Line Lead Arrows Past Exeter
Needham, Mass. -- St. Sebastian's all-senior top line of Michael Callow, Brendan Gorman, and Jayden Grier accounted for four Arrows goals in a 6-4 win over Exeter here today.
After scoring three unanswered goals in the second period to put Seb's up, 5-1, Exeter made things interesting in the third, outscoring Seb's 3-1. However, they were unable to get closer than two goals.
In the first period, Grier got things going, scoring on a 15' wrister that Exeter junior goalie Michael Salvatore wasn't quite ready for. A few minutes later, Gorman notched a nice PPG to make it 2-0, with Callow assisting. A rebound goal at 12:06 from Exeter PG center Ryan Sordillo cut it to 2-1, which is where things stood after the first period.
In the second period, Seb's blitzed Exeter for three unanswered goals, the first two were from Callow, both assisted by Gorman. Both goals came early in the period, a couple minutes apart, and the second was a short-handed tally. A dynamic duo, those two. And, just like that, it was a 4-1 game.
Seb's took a couple of penalties, which gave Exeter a few minutes of PP time, including a brief 5x3. Exeter was unable to capitalize, though they created plenty of traffic down low, leading to some testiness in front of Seb's senior goalie Ryan Kazmouz.
At 9:28 of the second, the Arrows made it 5-1, with junior D Nolan Joyce scoring, assisted by freshman Ben Merrill. It looked like the home team was going to blow the barn doors off.
But it didn't happen. In the third period, Exeter came out and made a game of it. A few minutes in, sophomore RW Christian Maro scored, with an assist going to senior linemate and centerman Kurt Gurkan, a Yale recruit who was a big factor in the third period.
But once again, Seb's took a four-goal lead. This time, sophomore center Colin Gorman, two years younger than brother Brendan, and also a center, made it 6-2 Seb's, tipping home a shot from the left point by sophomore D Aidan Connors. It was the younger Gorman's first career goal.
Exeter didn't quit. At 8:11, Sordillo scored his second of the game, a PPG assisted by Gurkan, to make it 6-3. On his next shift, Gurkan took a minor for playing with a broken stick. (The blade fell off and he had no idea the stick was broken.) That slowed Exeter for a couple minutes, but when he returned Exeter struck again, this time on the powerplay, as senior LW Charlie McGurrin converted a pass from Gurkan and PG center Ryan Dinges.
That would be as close as Exeter would come.
"I thought we played well for the first two periods, but I wasn't too excited about the third period," Seb's head coach Sean McCann said. "I like a lot of things about our team, but we're a young team and this will be part of the learning process for them. We're not quite there yet."
Exeter coach Tim Mitropoulos said, "(St. Sebastian's) is very good. They play with energy and pace and it showed in the second period. They were the better team today."
"But in the third period," Mitropoulos added, "I thought our guys responded well. They made it close. They made it interesting. I appreciate the compete. But Seb's got too much ahead of us. It just wasn't enough."
Note:
St. Seb's played eight sophomores, and two freshmen, a contrast to Exeter, which has always relied heavily on seniors and PGs. This year is no exception.

@ Avon 3, Taft 1 -- Going into the third period, Taft held a 1-0 lead on a goal from 6'5" sophomore defenseman Shane Mettler, but the Winged Beavers (3-0-0) scored a pair of PPGs -- from senior Brennan Ali and junior Nick Capasso -- to take a 2-1 lead. Liam Verdoni added an insurance goal later in the period. In net, Avon PG Conor Callaghan (24/25) earned the win; Rhinos' senior Mikey Roberts (44/47) took the loss.
Tilton 2 @ New Hampton 1 -- Tilton (2-0-0) scored both its goals in the first period, an even-strength tally from PG Kyle LoNigro and a shorty from junior Nicholas Fontaine. The Huskies' Evan Moore scored a PPG in the second, but New Hampton failed to get the equalizer. Tilton junior goalie Connor Waldron (34/35) took the win; New Hampton junior Nate Zerrenner (28/30) took the hard-luck loss.
@ St. Sebastian's 7, Portsmouth Abbey 1 -- Senior Michael Callow led the way with 3 even-strength goals. All the other goals in the game were powerplay tallies. Junior D Nolan Joyce (2g,1a) and senior F Jayden Grier (3a) each had three points for the Arrows (3-0-0).
@ Salisbury 5, Hotchkiss 3 -- A second period goal from senior Connor Driscoll broke a 3-3 tie and junior Ben Poitras added an insurance tally in the third. Salisbury (3-0-0) outshot Hotchkiss, 41-25.
@ Kent 5, Brunswick 4 -- Kent (2-2-0) held a 4-2 lead early in the third, but Brunswick (3-1-0) got a pair to tie it up. A back-door PPG off the stick of senior defenseman Joey Sciabarra at 14:09 of the third period lifted the Lions (2-2-0) to the home win. Senior Jake Kraft had two goals -- one a SHG -- for Kent, while Dante Palombo, soph Patrick Walsh, and, of course, Sciabarra scored the others. Geno McEnery (3a), Michael Hurst (2a) and Max Resnick (2a) aided the Lions' attack. For Brunswick, junior D Lucas St. Louis had 3 assists, sophomore F Sean Gibbons had 2 goals, and junior Hank Cleaves, who committed to Dartmouth on Monday, had a couple of assists. Brunswick had a 32-27 edge in shots in a game with plenty of up-and-down action and momentum shifts.
Frederick Gunn School 2, Berkshire 1 -- Gunn (3-1-0) scored a pair of goals -- from seniors Evan Raines and Ryan Novo -- two minutes apart late in the second to turn around what had been a 1-0 Berkshire lead. In net, Gunn senior Joey Lovullo (19/20) earned the win; Berkshire junior Danick Leroux (20/22) took the loss.
Cushing 4 @ Williston 0 -- Billy Norcross (2g), Ryan Philbrick (1g,1a), and Ethan Gardula (2a) each had 2 points to lead the Penguins (4-0-0) to the road win. Jackson Irving (18/18) earned the shutout win. Williston soph Jake Henry (28/32) took the loss.
@ Millbrook 6, Portledge 2 -- Senior DJ Walsh notched 3 goals -- a SHG, a PPG, and an even-strength goal -- to pace Millbrook's attack. Cam Lowe and Zach Walsh each had 2 assists. Millbrook held a 44-15 edge in shots.
@ Trinity-Pawling 6, Albany Academy 5 -- In a wild one, T-P junior F Jackson Graber had a big day, figuring in 4 goals (2g,2a) and scoring the late third period goal that broke a 5-5 tie and gave the home crowd a win. Junior F Austin Jerzak had a hat trick for AA, and added an assist.
Dexter 2 @ Exeter 2 (OT) -- With the extra attacker on, Exeter PG Kodi Dotterer scored at 16:50 of the final period to lift host Exeter (3-1-2) to a 2-2 tie with Dexter (2-1-1) . Overtime changed nothing. In net, Exeter junior Michael Salvatore kicked out 33 of the 35 shots he faced. For Dexter junior Max Gatti stopped 23 of 25 shots.
Deerfield 3 @ NMH 1 -- Senior Max Bloomer and junior Ryan McHugh scored a pair of short-handed goals in the first three minutes of the game, and the Big Green never looked back in their season-opening win over NMH (3-2-0). In net, Deerfield soph John Tolve (32/33) earned the win; senior Nick Bevilacqua (32/35) took the loss for the Hoggers.
St. Mark's 7 @ Worcester Academy 3 -- St. Mark's sophomore F Andrew Gibbons had a hat trick and added an assist as the Lions rolled over Worcester, 7-3. Junior Jim Lyver (1g,2a) and senior Dom Murphy (3a) each had three-point days. In net, junior Adam Costley (18/21) picked up the win for St. Mark's (2-1-0).
@ Roxbury Latin 2, Groton 2 (OT) -- After two periods had produced goose eggs for both teams, Roxbury Latin notched a pair of goals -- from senior Connor Berg and soph Vincent Jaeger -- early in the third to take a 2-0 lead. But the visitors from Groton had a late surprise up their sleeve, as senior D Bryan McLachan scored a PPG with 4:04 on the clock, and sophomore F Allen Fang scored with the goalie pulled and 40 seconds left in regulation to cap the comeback.
@ Holderness 4, Brewster Academy 2 -- After the visitors from Brewster (2-2-2) scored a pair of goals 12 seconds apart in the opening minutes of the second period, Holderness (3-0-0) went to work, scoring 4 unanswered goals the rest of the way. Senior co-captain Nick Messina scored what would turn out to be the game-winner, and the Bulls added an empty-netter in the waning seconds of play. In net, Bulls' junior Evan Plunkett (20/22) earned the win, while Brewster junior Patrick Green (45/48) took the tough loss.
Brooks 2 @ Middlesex 0 -- Brooks (3-0-0) got second period goals from senior F Kyle Pelletier and junior F Jack McDermott and that was all they needed as senior G Jake Inzirillo posted a 27-save shutout.
Loomis Chaffee 6 @ Pomfret 3 -- This was closer than the score would indicate, as Loomis (2-1-0) scored two empty-netters in the final minute. Charlie Andriole (2g), Oliver Flynn (1g,1a), and Elijah Hull (2a) notched two points apiece for the Pelicans. Junior Caleb Allen (32/35) took the win in the Loomis net; Pomfret senior Kellen Beauton (33/37) took the loss.
@ Belmont Hill 4, Governor's 1 -- Junior F James Fisher and senior F Drew Blackwell each had a goal and an assist to pace Bel Hill to the win. Sophomore goalie Sam Scopa (18/19) earned the win.

North Yarmouth Academy 6, Kents Hill 3 -- NYA senior F Nathanel Peretz had a hat trick and added an assist. Junior F Daxton St. Hilaire (4a) and Michael Belleau (1g,2a) were the other big guns for NYA (3-1-0). PG Kevin McElaney had 2 goals for Kents Hill.
@ Pingree 7, Berwick 0 -- Sophomore LW Quinn Moses (3g,2a) and senior F Michael Lynch (2g,3a) each notched 5 points. Sophomore RW Ryan Kavanagh had 4 points (all assists). Pingree's senior G Matt Cusolito (37/37) posted the shutout. Berwick actually outshot Pingree in this one, 37-32.
@ Milton 4, Lawrence 2 -- Sophomore Will Cannata had two goals and junior D Chris Romaine one to lead Milton past the Spartans. Senior Ethan Davidson had an ENG and 2 assists, and junior Henry Cohen had 2 assists. In net, Milton junior Harrison Brown (29/31) earned the win; LA junior Luc Gagnon (29/32) took the loss. Although Milton never trailed in this one, LA made it interesting when junior Jake Murphy scored with 2:33 on the clock to make it a one-goal game. Milton made that a moot point with Davidson's empty-netter a minute later.
@ The Hill 7, Lawrenceville 4 -- Senior co-captain Tyler Chenevert (2g,2a) had a four-point day for Hill. Junior Liam Mathews (2g,1a) was L'ville's hot hand.
Westminster 10, Choate 0 -- Senior forwards Vic Barakett (2g,2a) and Adam Mendelson (1g,3a) each had 4 points to lead the Martlets (2-0-0).

Avon's Gardner Reaches 800th Win
Easthampton, Mass. -- "I waited a long time for this one," Avon head coach John Gardner said after his team had blanked Williston-Northampton, 4-0, here Wednesday afternoon.
That's an understatement: Career win number 799, a 6-3 defeat of Nobles in the prep quarterfinals, came on March 4, 2020. That's 637 days ago. (Avon played a series of games vs. Salisbury during the pandemic winter, but those games were considered scrimmages.)
On Saturday, before Avon's home game against Hoosac (5:00 pm), there will be a ceremony and, in Gardner's honor, the rink will be named for him.
As for today's game, Williston came out hard, skated with Avon, and used their size and physicality to keep it a 0-0 game until midway through the second period when Avon junior center Charlie Gollob scored on a partial breakaway. A little over a minute later, senior RW Liam Verdoni, from a scrum in front, scored a rebound goal to make it 2-0.
The game was getting away from Williston, and whatever flickering hope they held for a comeback was extinguished by an excess of penalties. Their PK unit looked gassed as a skilled Avon team moved the puck around quickly and efficiently.
With 2:57 left in the second, sophomore wing Joe Connor took a nice cross-slot pass from junior Nick Capasso, and fired a wrister past Williston senior G Ryan Hennigan to make it 3-0.
Early in the third, Williston had over a minute of 5x3 play, but failed to get anything going.
Late in the third, by which time the game had become bogged down in penalties, Avon added one more, a power play goal, as senior Brendan Fennell found Capasso at the corner of the crease for a tap-in.
We don't know what the final shot total was, but 44-22 is a reasonable estimate. Avon PG goalie Conor Callaghan handled everything that came his way. Williston senior Ryan Hennigan faced a lot of tough shots and the Avon forwards had him scrambling. He came up with some big saves to keep things respectable.
"Our goalie played well," Williston coach Derek Cunha said, "and we played a strong first period. But we couldn't get into any kind of flow because of all the penalties. That's something we have to work on."

Top Four from Berkshire Jamboree
It may take nearly three hours to get there. And, yes, the Mass Pike is beyond boring. But the last few miles, as you pass through Egremont and down Route 41, are sublime, particularly with the morning sun shining on the first snow these eyes have seen this fall. The school’s twin rinks and athletic center is located at the base of 2,605 foot Mount Everett, which looms over the campus the way the Alps stand guard over Innsbruck, Austria. Well, maybe not quite that much, but it is a magnificent site for a hockey rink.
It’s a good tournament, too, with a lot of good teams, eight in fact. And, after two years, it was good to be back. But I was totally gobsmacked by what exactly that two years means. Basically, every junior and senior from two years ago is gone. Some teams have totally turned over their roster. Most have a couple 9th and 10th grade players from two years ago, but they are bigger, older, and suddenly veterans.
The tournament was a blank slate, then, which is exciting. It felt like starting from scratch. But it will take time to learn all the new players. More viewing and it will come. It always does.
There was no one player who caused a buzz among the cognoscenti.
Enough of the chit-chat. Here are the top four teams from Monday.
First off, Salisbury – surprise, surprise – was the best team. They moved the puck well, played a solid team game. They set a high bar. We have check marks next to a lot of players. We want to see who amongst them emerges, and get a stronger sense of the team as compared to previous Salisbury squads. There's talent, for sure. How much? We'll know after a couple more looks.
Kent was probably the second-best team here. They have size everywhere and enough skill to make some noise this year. They tied Northwood, 1-1, in their first game and held a dominating 4-1 lead over Gunn (that’s going to take some getting used to) in their second game before hitting a wall, giving up four unanswered goals in the second half and losing, 5-4. They’ll be at the Exeter Tournament on the weekend, and will face KUA on Sunday. That’ll be a test.
Northwood, with a good number of games under its belt, played good solid hockey, the kind that come with familiarity with your teammates. But they didn’t show much offensive flair, tying Kent, 1-1, and beating Berkshire, 2-1. That’s three goals on the day, the fewest of any team here except Trinity-Pawling (also with three). Northwood lacks a stud up front, like they had with Jack Dugan a few years back.
Gunn, in that aforementioned game vs. Kent, played a shaky first half, allowing Kent too many odd-man rushes. But in the second half, fueled by a pair of goals from senior D Sal Cerrato, a small mobile puck-mover, with an accurate shot from the point, they came back. Senior wing Sean Bradley scored the GWG with 1:56 left. The all-senior line of Bradley, Michael Murtagh (UConn), and Julian Facchinelli had a strong game. Gunnery will also be at Exeter this weekend.
Canterbury, Berkshire, Hotchkiss, and T-P rounded out the eight-team field. Too early to say much, but it looked to us like they’d have to be at their best to beat the four mentioned above.
Three months from now, we'll know.
