Holiday Tournament Guide Ready

The 2023-24 Holiday Tournament Guide is complete. Just click on the link at the top of this page.

This is a handy thing to have on that third weekend in December, and then on into the New Year. We just print out a copy and carry it with us. By January it looks like something a crazed mongoose ate for lunch.

We've been doing these Holiday Guides for a while now. The initial inspiration for the guide sprang from a story told us by an assistant coach at a Div. I college out west. One year, he had the Lawrence/Groton Tournament on his list of stops. He saw Lawrence, Mass. on the map, figured the Lawrence Academy rink must be there, and headed off in his rental car. Getting off Route 495 at the Lawrence exit, he went up over a small bridge, and there, below and to the right, he spied the Valley Forum and its dimly lit parking lot. He squeezed into a spot, grabbed his notebook, headed inside... and found a pee-wee game in full tilt.

Someone pointed him in the right direction. Of course, this was before Google Maps. And probably before Google itself.

Mustangs' Caulfield Keeps Lions at Bay

Canterbury 3 @ Millbrook 3 (OT) -- The Saints and Mustangs kicked things off today with a 3-3 tug of war. Post-grad Duncan Stewart's powerplay goal gave Canterbury a 3-1 lead more than halfway through the second period. Host Millbrook didn't quit, though, and drew within one when junior Mason Walker (2g,1a) scored his second goal with 38 seconds left in the second. In the opening minutes of the third, Millbrook junior newcomer David Ambuhl notched his first prep score to level the tally. The remaining 14 minutes of regulation -- plus a five-minute OT -- weren't enough to decide a winner. Canterbury junior Maxim Pitts (34/37) and Millbrook senior Tyler Spokane (28/31) were both solid in goal.

Frederick Gunn 4 @ Hotchkiss 1 -- In a game closer than the score indicates, Mitchell McCusker shined in his first game as Gunn's full-time netminder. After splitting time with Ryan Crowshaw last season, the senior stopped 37 of the 38 Hotchkiss shots he faced in the opener, enabling the Highlanders to pull away with two late ENGs. Gunn senior Alex LoGuercio scored twice. (Spanning back to last year's Small School title tilt, LoGuercio has four goals in his last two games.) Hotchkiss senior Brennan Cail scored the Bearcats' lone goal.

@ New Hampton 4, Winchendon 2 -- The host Huskies scored twice in the first and twice in the third to prevail in their debut. NHS junior Connor Pierson -- who totaled seven goals last season -- scored twice. In net, post-grad Alex Lafreniere (21/23) earned the win.

Holderness 10 @ Hebron 1 -- Hebron scored first, but the visitors responded with 10 unanswered goals to cruise the rest of the way. Holderness junior classmates Eli Chiliki (2g,2a) and Jacob Duval (4a) led the way, but 13 different Bulls had their names etched onto the scoresheet.

@ Portsmouth Abbey 8, BB&N 0 -- Freshman forward Connor Nolan (1g,3a) paced The Abbey with four points and senior goalie Patty McDevitt was flawless in net. Ten different skaters notched at least a point for the victors.

@ Kent 8, Hoosac 1 -- Fionn Keon (great name!) got a taste of prep hockey in sporadic NEPSIHA matchups during his career at St. Andrew's College in Canada. Now a post-grad at Kent, Keon announced his arrival on the prep scene in a major way with a four-point debut in the Lions' drubbing of Hoosac. Senior forward Jack Roberts tacked on two goals and a helper, and senior netminder Aidan Hopewell (19/20) was solid in net. Senior Zack Robert notched the only goal for the Owls.

Noble & Greenough 5 @ Pomfret 1 -- Brothers Billy and Ted MacAusland combined for three goals, including a shorthander each, to lead Nobles to a road win at Pomfret. Senior goalie Tyler Bloomfield, who's got big shoes to fill this season replacing Thatcher Bernstein (now with USHL's Dubuque),  stopped 26 of 27 for the win. Junior Luke Corrigan scored the Griffins' lone goal.

St. Sebastian's 7 @ Rivers 3 -- Sebs' senior Nolan Flynn notched a hat trick, joining brothers Teddy and Casey Mutryn as four-point scorers for the Arrows. The visitors led 3-2 at the second intermission but pulled away for good with a four-goal final frame. Carter Meyer, an eighth-grader, paced Rivers with a goal and an assist. Senior Pelle Russo was the winner in net.

Brewster Academy 6 @ Vermont Academy 4 -- In a high-scoring, back-and-forth battle, Brewster senior Mason Meltzer led all scorers with a hat trick. In all, seven different skaters turned in a multi-point performance. Sophomore Levi Jones (1g,2a) led the Wildcats' charge. Brewster freshman JR Bonia (23/27) picked up the win in his prep debut. VA senior James Mikos (24/30) is charged with the loss.

Salisbury 3 @ Taft 2 -- Last season, Taft and Salisbury played to three different 3-2 decisions, including the Rhinos' Large School Championship win in OT. In that sense, it's only fitting that they opened the new campaign with, well, a 3-2 game. The Crimson Knights scored twice in the final 33 seconds of the second period, with senior Jared Rothman's goal standing up as the game-winner. Between the pipes, Sarum junior Nick Hussar (29/31) was the winner, while Taft's Brady Morris (31/34) took a tough-luck loss.

@ Thayer 2, St. George's 1 -- Thayer scored twice in the first and, thanks to sophomore goalie Tyler Moschella (43/44), that proved to be enough. Junior Brady Kudrick scored what ended up as the game-winner just over 11 minutes in. Ryder Shea, a Maine recruit, kicked out 42 of 44, keeping the Tigers off the board for the final 42 minutes of the game. The Dragons' offense didn't do him many favors, though, save for junior Nathan Walsh's third-period tally.

@ Cushing 4, Dexter Southfield 0 -- Senior Emerson Marshall scored twice, classmate Marko Bilic stopped all 20 shots he faced in net, and Cushing earned its first win of the season. Dexter sophomore Colin Davis was 24/28 in net. The Penguins have won 42 of their 58 games under head coach Paul Pearl.

Avon Old Farms 6 @ Williston Northampton 2 -- In a game that featured more penalties than goals, Avon picked up right where it left off, even with last year's core off to the junior ranks. Senior Lefty Markonidis and junior Michael Munroe each scored twice. Senior center Brendan Tighe, a Brown commit who's appeared in USHL and NTDP games, also found the net in his AOF debut.

@ Roxbury Latin 3, Pingree 2 -- Host Roxbury Latin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and never trailed the rest of the way. Junior Cole Oberg (1g,1a) and senior Jake Popeo (2a) led the scoring and senior G Evan Zhang (32/34) picked up the win to start off his third season guarding the Foxes den.

Stanstead College 6 @ Tilton 4 -- Tilton held a 3-2 lead after one period of play, but gave up three straight PPGs to allow the visitors to take control. The Stanstead blue liners -- specifically senior defensemen Raphael Tellier (1g,2a), Karson Kerbes (1g,2a), and Jasmin Tremblay (2g) -- led the point-getters.

@ NMH 4, Académie Saint-Louis 1 -- Sophomore F Easton Gates (2g,1a) led the Hoggers' attack, and junior G Luke Laurino kicked out 29 of 30 shots. NMH, with a win over Brewster before the Thanksgiving break, moves to 2-0 on the young season.

@ Milton 7, St. Mark's 2 -- Senior F Will Cannata (2g,1a), junior forwards Anthony Sergeyev (3a) and Luis Valencia (2g), senior F Ryan Shea (1g,1a), and junior D Dylan Hunt (1g,1a) led the Mustangs, under new head coach Jim Gaudet, to a season-opening win. Junior G Sam Caulfield (38/40) picked up right where he left off from his stellar sophomore campaign.

@ Governor's 6, Proctor 1 -- Senior F Tyson Scanlon (2g), freshman F Robbie Daley (1g,1a), senior D Max Vieira (2a), and sophomore F Ford Sullivan (2a) each notched a pair of points for the Governors. Junior Zach Ericson (37/38) picked up the win in net.

@ Berkshire 5, Albany Academy 1 -- Max Lacombe (2g,1a) notched three points for the Bears, while Duncan Thompson (2g), Jonah Rainisch (1g,1a), Stephen Campbell (2a) and Josh Williams (2a) also figured in the scoring parade. In net, NMH transfer Kyle Bolduc (24/25) earned the win.

Let the Games Begin

Before the new season begins, we'd like to offer a quick refresher on last season, a campaign that started well and finished with a top-flight playoff series, the best we've seen in years.

Last Season's Champions:

Elite 8 -- (#2) Avon Old Farms 3,  (#1) Cushing 1 -- Avon, on the back of senior goaltender Stephen Peck's 45 saves, won its 9th Prep Title under head coach John Gardner, a record unlikely to be broken for a long, long time -- if ever.

USHR's 2023 Players of the Year

USHR's 2023 Player of the Year: Stephen Peck, Avon goaltender
Peck led Avon Old Farms to an Elite 8 title with a huge 45-save effort vs. Cushing. A Michigan commit now playing in Bismarck (NAHL), the senior from NYC posted a 1.26/.948 line for the Winged Beavers.

USHR's Goaltender of the Year: Rudy Guimond, Taft goaltender
Guimond, a junior at Taft and 2025 Yale recruit, backstopped the Rhinos to a Large School Championship with a sparkling OT win over Salisbury. The Quebec native, who finished the season with a 2.43/.943 line, is playing his senior season in Cedar Rapids (USHL).

USHR's Defenseman of the Year: Sean Keohane, Dexter-Southfield
Keohane, a senior from Milton, Mass. is now at Tri-City (USHL). He's slated to matriculate at Harvard in 2024.

USHR's Forward of the Year: Landon Resendes, Cushing
Resendes, a Boston College 2024 recruit from Marlborough, Mass., is foregoing his senior year at Cushing, heading west to Cedar Rapids (USHL). Resendes was the top scorer at Elite 8 runner-up Cushing with a 27-27-54 line.

Large School/Small School Breakdown

Here's the Large School/Small School breakdown for the '23-'24 NEPSIHA season. For those of you new to prep hockey, and to USHR, the breakdown plays a role in the post-season seeding. More on that as the weeks pass. Suffice to say, the difference begins to play an increasingly larger role as teams get deeper into their seasons and RPI and JSPR become increasingly meaningful.

The schools in the left-hand column are large; those in the right-hand college are small.

It's also what allows for three separate post-season tournaments -- the Open (i.e., Elite 8). the Large School, and the Small School tournaments.

Welcome to 2023-24!

The 2023-24 Prep Pages are now officially open.

All of last season’s news, rosters, schedules, and stats have been archived, and new material will start going into this season’s pages immediately, as coaches begin to upload their teams' schedules.

We want to remind new readers of a couple of features we introduced over the last two seasons. Players’ career prep statistics, for one. If you click on a player’s name on the roster you will see his final stats for all the seasons he has played prep hockey and, of course, running totals for the current season. If you click on the year, say 2020-21, it will show a player's game-by-game statistics.

It is also possible to download rosters, schedules, and all statistics pages in PDF form, giving pages a cleaner look when printed out. You may be familiar with them. Many prep schools use them on the rosters you pick up on your way into the rink.

Pretty much all columns are sortable. Just click on the top of the column. This is useful for, among other things, separating scoring and goaltending leaders by school, birth year, position, points, etc.

We’ve also done a lot of work on the back end, mainly behind-the-scenes stuff that you probably won’t notice beyond the fact that the site will run more smoothly than ever. We endeavor to make these improvements each season.

Once we have a reasonable number of schedules posted, we will begin to keep you updated on which of them are actually up, so you won’t have to waste your time looking for those that have yet to be uploaded.

We will also be posting jamboree and holiday tournament schedules. Look for those to start going up over the coming weeks as well. Note to coaches: please send 'em along, to staff@ushr.com

We also will accept some select advertising for the upcoming season and beyond. We don't want to clutter the site with them, but it gives us a little more money to buy, for example, a new auto transmission. Please write ads(at)ushr.com for more info, as well as rates.

Of course, we will have the news coverage you have come to expect.

Welcome to the new season. We're glad to be here. We’re glad you’re here. And, as always, we thank you for your support.
