St. Mark’s Upends Milton in OT, 7-6
Milton, Mass. – Senior RW Kevin Erving scored at 14 seconds of overtime to lift St. Mark’s to a 7-6 win over host Milton Academy here today. It was Erving’s third goal of the game. The play started with the puck being chipped past the Milton D and into the corner where it was dug out and fed to the front where, on a second shot, Erving knocked it past Milton sophomore goaltender Michael Baldino. Junior center Jeremiah Dargis (3a), who made the initial play, and senior LW Andrew Smith (4a) both picked up assists on the play.
Defense was a little hard to come by in this game, so we’ll just get to the scoring right away. In addition to Erving, Dargis, and Smith, other big point producers for the Lions were senior defenseman Dan Roberts (1g,1a), junior center Matt Drew (1g,1a), and junior defenseman Ryan Smith (2a).
For host Milton, junior defenseman Jeremy Deutsch (1g,2a), senior defenseman Mike Matczak (3a), junior forward Billy Donahue (2g,1a), and junior forward Geoff Mucha (2g,1) each had three points.
St. Mark’s struck first in this game, just nine seconds in, as Erving caught the Milton D back on its heels and gave the visitors a quick 1-0 lead.
Milton got it back as senior center John Shepard hit Donahue with a nice goalmouth pass just a little over a minute later. The teams would trade goals again – sophomore Chris Cyr scoring for St. Mark’s and Mucha scoring for Milton – to tie it up at 2-2. Milton, however, would take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission, as Mucha scored an unassisted power play goal with 4:04 left in the period.
In the second, St. Mark’s came out hard and took it to Milton, outscoring the hosts 4-1 and taking a 6-4 lead into the second intermission.
Shots were even 24-24 after two periods.
The third was a different story. St. Mark’s tried to protect their two-goal lead but couldn’t do it. The visitors did manage to kill off two consecutive penalties in the first half of the period, but when they were whistled for a third, Milton finally took advantage and cut the St. Mark’s lead to 6-5 at the 9:56 mark, as senior center Brandon Nunn converted the rebound of a Mucha shot.
With 1:26 remaining, St.Mark’s Cyr was whistled off for holding, allowing Milton to go on the power play for the remainder of the game.
After a time out, Milton head coach Paul Cannata pulled his goalie to give his team a 6-on-4 advantage and the Mustangs cashed, tying the game up at 6-6 as Donahue tipped home a shot from the point by Deutsch with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.
Milton, which had outshot St. Mark’s 23-5 in the period, had tied it up and brought it into overtime, though the celebration was short-lived.
For the game, Milton outshot St. Mark’s, 47-29. St. Mark’s junior Nick Saltarelli, the cousin of former Princeton goalie Erasmus Saltarelli, kicked out 41 shots for the win. For Milton, Baldino stopped 22 of 29 shots.
St. Mark’s was whistled for ten penalties in the game; Milton five.
Afterward, St. Mark’s coach Brian Grady was asked about his squad’s second period comeback.
“We changed our forecheck,” Grady said, “and we also turned our game up a notch, and played with a chip on our shoulder. The guys played with grit and we picked up some hard-working, blue collar-type goals.”
As for the third period, Grady said, “We were back on our heels a bit. We allowed them to get back into it by being tentative. We were playing not to lose. We took stupid penalties and they capitalized.”
Across the hall, Cannata described his team as a “group of disjointed pieces.”
“We need to bring it together,” he said. “Offensively, we are able to do some things. Defensively, though, we have to strengthen ourselves. We have 4-5 new D and a new goalie. We will get better.”

Lawrence Rolls Past Andover, 6-3
Groton, MA -- Behind three power play and two shorthanded goals, Lawrence Academy notched its first win of the season this afternoon, icing visiting Phillips Andover by a 6-3 score.
Lawrence's top line of Joe Whitney (1g,1a), John Simpson (1g,2a), and Steve Whitney (2g,1a) notched a point in all six of the LA goals, while junior forward John McInnis (1g,1a) tallied a power play goal as well.
The hosts got on the board first, after a back and forth first period featured good chances for both teams. With under two minutes to play, Joe Whitney picked up the puck in the slot, drew three defenders to him, and dished to his wide open younger brother Steve at the right dot for the power play goal.
The teams came out in the second period once again to lots of special teams work. Midway through a PA power play five minutes in, LA's Simpson broke out from the opposing zone, creating a shorthanded two-on-one bid with Joe Whitney, who knocked in Simpson's feed at the right post for the 2-0 lead.
Andover would answer shortly however, as senior captain Joe Smith (1g,2a) finished the PA buzz by taking a feed in the slot on the power play, and wristed a shot just under the crossbar to beat Justin Gates (27 saves) top shelf glove side.
Lawrence continued to apply pressure on the PA defense, outshooting the visitors 18-9 in the 2nd stanza, and tallied another goal with less than two minutes to play in the period. After an initial shot from the point was knocked down by Andover goalie Glenn Stowell (40 saves), LA's McInnis fired in the rebound sitting at the bottom of a scrum in front of the crease to increase the lead back to two goals.
LA continued to pull away in the 3rd, notching two goals in the first eight minutes, before Andover answered again. Freshman defenseman Bennett Carroccio blasted a shot through some traffic from the left side of the blueline, finding the net just above Gates' glove shoulder.
The teams would trade tallies as the clock wound down, but also upped the physical play. Andover, visibly frustrated with its effort, responded to the chippy play with some jarring hits, and took some itself. The pressuring Lawrence offense also put 46 shots on net for the game, versus Andover's 30 for the game.
Lawrence head coach Kevin Potter said after the game, "I'm very excited for the win, we bounced back from an average performance against Choate on Monday, and beat a team I think will be a top team in the league very soon."
"Our forwards are very skilled and gave a great effort, and the defense came together and played much better," said Potter.
Dean Boylan, Andover's head coach, stressed the workload Andover has in front of itself. "We really need to clean up our defensive zone coverage, there are too many people running around right now. The special teams, the puck awareness and protection, they need work, but we saw some positive signs to build on, especially in the younger players. It's clear we have a lot of work to do."
