Kent Strikes Again

Kent, Conn. – Kent, which upset #1 Taft Wednesday, today knocked off #2 Westminster, 8-5, capping off the most successful week the program has had in at least a decade, and sending a strong message that the school’s hockey program, in the dumps for years, is making a resurgence under second-year head coach Matt Herr.

The fact that the game was played in front of an appreciative hockey alumni weekend crowd, just made it that much better for Kentians, many of whom remember the glory days of the early ‘80s.

There’s no David Quinn on this team, but try telling that to Westminster. The visitors were actually up, 2-1, seven minutes into the first period, but Kent then struck twice in a 20-second span, and never looked back.

Kent led 3-2 after one period, and 7-3 after two. For Kent, Danny Colvin (2g,4a), Justin Daniels (1g,4a), twin brother Drew Daniels (2g,1a), and Regnars Alksnis (2g) led the attack. For Westminster, Nick Pitsikoulis (3g,2a), Julien Boutet (1g,1a), and David Earl (2a) led the way.

Brian Dowd kicked out 24 of 29 shots for the win. Darren MacDonald took the loss for Westminster, stopping 26 of 34.

The game was an entertaining barn-burner, with the defense taking a vacation. In spite of 22 penalties (12 Kent, 10 Westy), there was constant end-to-end play, intense and purposeful hitting and gritty, determined efforts from both teams.

The deciding factor, if one can be selected from an 8-5 explosion, was Kent’s transition game being able to offset Westminster’s team speed. Each time Westminster scored, Kent stormed back with one of their own – or two or three – keeping pressure on the Westminster defense.

”We were getting to the loose pucks consistently and that was key for us,” said Herr. “The boys are starting to see the rewards of team effort shift after shift after shift.”

Cushing Makes A Statement

Ashburnham, Mass. – In the weekend’s most highly anticipated matchup, #5 Cushing outlasted #4 South Kent, 7-4.

In a wide-open barnburner, a deeper Cushing squad pumped 55 shots at South Kent goaltender Sergiy Sorokolat; while South Kent fired 48 shots at Cushing’s T.J. Massie.

For Cushing, which has an eleven-game unbeaten streak, it was their first win over a top ten team this season, and they passed the test with flying colors.

If there was a key to this high-scoring affair, it was Cushing’s ability to score almost immediately after a South Kent tally, squelching any momentum the visitors may have gained.

For example, a Josh Bernard second period goal came just 1:25 after South Kent’s Nick Lampson had cut Cushing’s lead to one goal.

Earlier, in the first period, Cushing’s Broc Little scored on a partial breakaway to give Cushing a two-goal lead less than two minutes after South Kent had scored to make it a one-goal game.

And, finally, Ryan Bourque scored off a pretty tic-tac-toe sequence 12:26 into the second period, giving Cushing a 6-4 lead just 1:14 after South Kent’s Joe Pereira had cut the Cushing lead to 5-4.

”A win is a win,” said Cushing head coach Steve Jacobs, adding, “…and this was a wild one.”

”Some nights you have it, some nights you don’t,” South Kent coach Geoff Marottolo said.

Scoring:
Cushing: Broc Little (2g,1a), Torin Snydeman (1g,2a), Brian Maguire (1g,1a), Josh Bernard (1g,1a), Dave Warsofsky (1g), Ryan Bourque (1g), Sean Whitney (2a), Sean Coughlin (1a), Ryan Warsofsky (1a), Matt White (1a).

South Kent: Rem Vanderbeek (1g,2a), Joe Pereira (1g,1a), Nick Lampson (1g,1a), Karl Mauhs (1g), John Tague (1a), Eric Daddario (1a).

Goaltending:
Cushing Academy: TJ Massie (44/48); South Kent: Sergiy Sorokolat (48/55).

Note:

In the Cushing coach search, Bill Troy, who has assisted Steve Jacobs for the last 17 years and is widely respected and liked within the coaching fraternity, appears to be emerging as the early front-runner. Troy also works in the school’s office of admissions.

The other name heard a lot is 16-year NHL defenseman Jeff Norton, a 1984 Cushing grad who is back in his hometown of Acton and currently in the insurance business.

Westminster at Loomis Moved

Saturday’s Westminster at Loomis game has, due to a bum compressor at Loomis’ rink, been moved to Westminster. Faceoff will be at 7:00 pm.

The two teams are flip-flopping dates. The Westminster-Loomis game scheduled for Feb. 14 is now scheduled to be played at Loomis.

Here’s the full story, from Loomis:

”As of this past weekend Loomis Chaffee has lost its ice due to a problem in the refrigeration system.  This has forced the two boys teams and two girls teams to spend at least two weeks traveling for practice to nearby rinks who have been very cooperative in trying to find whatever hours they could to help.  Generally this has meant before school or later in the evening.  Loomis Athletic Director Bob Howe has done a great job scrambling and would like to thank those rinks for their help.  They include Trinity College, Kingswood Oxford, Enfield Twin Rinks, and the International Skating Center of Connecticut.  Loomis will ultimately need a new system to be put in this spring but a temporary solution has been found that will hopefully have Loomis back on its own ice by the week of January 29.   This has meant that during this down time all games that were scheduled at home will be played on the road.  The problem first occurred this past Saturday and caused the girls varsity game at home versus Hotchkiss to be played at Hotchkiss on Monday January 15.   Fortunately the only other varsity home game during these two weeks was scheduled for this Saturday January 20, Boys Varsity hosting Westminster.  This game will now be played at Westminster at 7:30pm.”

Pitsikoulis Too Much for Salisbury... Again

Simsbury, Conn. --  Westminster forward Nick Pitsikoulis scored  a hat trick here today to lead Westminster past Salisbury, 4-1.

This is not the first time Pitsikoulis has victimized Salisbury. Last Jan. 14, Westminster, behind four goals from Pitsikoulis, went on the road and handed eventual prep champion Salisbury their only loss of the season, a 6-4 decision.

Unlike a year ago, when Salisbury raced out to a 3-0 start before Westminster took over, today's game began with a spit-and-stutter start, as seven whistles were blown in the first 47 seconds of the contest, and it continued to take a while for the game to get flowing. Not helping matters any, and just 4:04 into the opening period, Salisbury’s Ben Ketchum was called for hitting from behind and was assessed a four minute penalty and a game misconduct. Although Westminster controlled the puck well on the power play, they were not able to sustain any prolonged pressure. On top of that, just 1:38 into the double minor Westminster forward Ollie Koo was called for holding, cutting short the lengthy man advantage.

Then it was Salisbury’s turn, as Westminster defenseman Tommy Cross was called for hitting from behind. The Simsbury native was assessed a four-minute penalty and a game misconduct as well, but Salisbury was unable to control the puck long enough to build any sustained pressure.

The period finally ended, with score even at 0-0, and with Westminster outshooting Salisbury by an 8-7 margin.

Westminster finally broke the deadlock just 48 seconds into the second period with the man advantage when, after controlling the puck from the opening face-off, Ryan Riffe fed a pass from down low back out to defenseman David Earl at the left point. Earl did not hesitate, and blasted a slapshot to Borelli’s glove side. Julien Boutet, positioned at the post, deflected the shot under Borelli’s glove, giving Westminster the 1-0 lead.

The game-winning goal, which at the time gave Westminster a 2-0 lead just 5:47 into the second period, came when Ryan Riffe, a PG from South Berwick, Maine, dug the puck away from two Salisbury players in the left corner and snapped a bullet pass toward the net. Ready and waiting was Pitsikoulis, who deftly redirected the pass into the net past Salisbury goalie Anthony Borelli.

The second period ended with Westminster up 2-0. Shots on goal were even at 7-7.

In the third period, Westminster took advantage on the power play again, and it was all Pitsikoulis. Just 2:57 into the stanza, Boutet controlled a loose puck at his own blue line and fed a wide-open Pitsikoulis along the left boards. Pitsikoulis calmly crossed into Salisbury’s zone, looked right for a linemate, but then snapped a wrist shot to the far side past a stunned Borelli.

Then, less than a minute later, Westminster found themselves on the power play again, and yet again Pitsikoulis came through, burying a pass from Riffe. David Earl also picked up an assist on the goal, and, just like that, Westminster was up 4-0 and smelling blood.

Salisbury avoided the shutout with just over nine minutes left in the game. Harvard-bound senior Michael Biega took a Paul Carey pass off a beautiful rush and beat Westminster goalie Darren MacDonald on the short side.

Final shots were 26-20, in favor of Westminster.

Smith Powers Andover Past Exeter

Andover, Mass - In a sharp and tight display of hockey, Phillips Andover came from behind twice to defeat archrival Phillips Exeter 4-2 in front of a packed house here tonight.

Andover senior captain Joe Smith delivered a monster performance to lead the hosts to victory, scoring all four goals for the Blue, including an empty-netter.

Without a doubt, last year’s 3-0 season-ending loss to Exeter was burned into the memories of the Andover players. However, it was the Red who struck first, and quickly.

Just a minute into the game, from behind the net, senior captain Mike Doherty fed Evan O’Brien at the front of the right goal post. O’Brien jabbed the puck in between the post and pad of surprised Andover sophomore goaltender Glenn Stowell for the 1-0 lead.

Andover responded four minutes later, when Sean Roche’s behind-the-back pass in the neutral zone found Harvard-bound Smith at the offensive blueline. The captain from Woburn, Mass. snapped a hard wrister from the high slot that beat Jonathan Lee top shelf.

Andover outshot Exeter 6-5 in the first period, and the tight defensive play by both teams led to a 17-15 shot total in the Red’s favor by the end of the game. Exeter’s pressure came mainly from the perimeter however, and Andover did a good job blocking shots and disrupting the Exeter cycling game down low and behind the net.

The second period opened quite like the first, as Exeter scored again at 1:03 of the stanza, when Ben Tsujiura knocked the puck in from a scrum in front of the net.

Andover’s power play, which has undergone a bit of a makeover since the holiday break, got another chance five minutes later. As the man advantage wound down, postgraduate Ryan Young fed an open Smith between the circles, and the captain ripped a one-timer into the back of the net to knot the game at 2-2.

The third period opened with high intensity, and the inevitable chippiness between the rivals also stepped up a bit. The excitement reached a climax when, five minutes in, the back end of an Exeter power play turned from good to bad in a flash, as Ryan Young chipped the puck over a Red defender’s stick at the blue line. The puck found the stick of Andover’s Smith, right out of the penalty box, who streaked in all alone to beat Lee five-hole on the breakaway – and the hats began to hit the ice.

The Big Blue held the lead dearly as the clock ran out, keeping Exeter to five shots in the final period, with help from some perfect goaltending from Stowell down the stretch. Exeter’s timeout with 42 seconds to play couldn’t delay the electric Andover celebration, which culminated when Smith’s clearing attempt found the empty net.

“I think overall we did a great job sticking to our system, especially on special teams and in the offensive zone, and we showed a lot of discipline.” said Andover head coach Dean Boylan. “The forwards and defense worked together and eliminated the quality opportunities, and I liked how we kept their forwards to the outside, and didn’t allow too much in the slot. I’m real proud of the kids. They put a great effort in today.”

Cushing’s Jacobs Announces Retirement

Longtime Cushing coach Steve Jacobs has made official what has been rumored for a  while, announcing to his players tonight that he would be retiring as head coach of Cushing after the season.

Jacobs, who has been synonymous with Cushing hockey for 22 years, took over a program that played in a cold off-campus rink in Gardner, Mass. and turned it into one of the top prep programs in the country, twice winning NEPSIHA Div. I crowns (1996, 1998).  times.

Jacobs began his coaching career 30 years ago, working as an assistant under Peter Van Buskirk at Hudson (Mass.) High School, which he had attended as a student prior to a PG year at Choate. Jacobs was on Van Buskirk’s staff when Hudson High won the 1978 Mass. Div. I state championship. From there, Jacobs moved on to Algonquin Regional High, where he was an assistant for one year. Jacobs first head coaching position was at Marlboro (Mass.) High School, where he was behind the bench for six years before taking over at Cushing in the mid-80s.

In January 2005, Jacobs earned win number 500. When it was pointed out to him that 500 wins comes out to an average of 25 a year for two decades, Jacobs replied, “That just means we’ve had great players here.”

In Jacobs’ 21 seasons, his teams have never had a losing campaign, and in all but one season have reached the final eight. Twelve Cushing teams have reached the final four, and five have reached the title game. Two Cushing teams have won prep championships, in 1996 and 1998. The Tom Poti-Ryan Moynihan-Bobby Allen-Joe Exter led team of 1995-96, which went 35-1 was the best Cushing team we’ve ever seen, and one of the great prep teams of all time.

Note:

We’ll be updating this story shortly, with quotes from Jacobs, in the main USHR News section.

                             Wed. Jan. 10 Summaries

-- At Marion, Mass., on the shores of Buzzard’s Bay, Cushing and Tabor played a wild one, with the Penguins coming out on top as Sean Coughlin scored a 5-on-3 power play goal late in OT to give his team a 7-6 win.

Tabor, despite being outshot 67-32, didn’t go down easily in this one, battling back three times from two goal deficits. Cushing went up 2-0; Tabor tied it at 2-2. Cushing went up 4-2; Tabor tied it up at 4-4. Cushing went up 6-4; Tabor tied it at 6-6 and sent it to OT.

In OT, Tabor was called for a penalty with about two minutes left and was then whistled again for tripping quickly afterward. The tripping was not blatant. Tabor goaltender Ryan Carroll, who kicked out 60 of 67 shots, made some big saves to keep it close before Coughlin came through, with assists going to Ryan Bourque and Dave Warsofsky.

Tabor’s season is looking a lot like last year, when they started slowly and then turned it on after Christmas, eventually falling just a little short of a playoff berth. This year, Tabor started out by losing five of their first six games, but then won six in a row entering today’s contest.

For Cushing, Dave Warsofsky (1g,3a), Ryan Warsofsky (1g,2a), Ryan Bourque (1g,1a), Broc Little (2a), and Neil Lavanchy (2a) led the scoring parade.

For Tabor, James Jelinek (1g,3a), Mark Colp (3g), and Andrew Jelinek (1g,1a) came up big.

--  At Watertown, Conn., host Taft edged Westminster, 4-2. Robbie Bourdon (1g,1a), Andrew Balysky (1g,1a), and Bryan Curran (2a) led the way up front for the Rhinos. In net, Andrew Margolin kicked out 22 of 24 shots for the win.

Three of Taft’s goals came on the power play.

Note: Taft was without defenseman Kevin Reich, who received around 47 stitches in Monday’s game. Reich has had numerous small cuts on his chin from the past three or four seasons and the scar tissue that had built up just reopened Monday when a stick came up under the facemask, creating one big gash. Reich will not be able to play for approximately two weeks as the cut heals.

-- At Dedham, Mass., a power blackout early in the Lawrence at Nobles game caused the game to be scratched. It will be made up at a later date.

-- At Deerfield, Mass., the host Big Green blanked Loomis, 5-0, as Michael Dizgun and Christopher Gherlone combined on a 22 save shutout. Alex Killorn (2g,1a), Matt Lovejoy (3a), and Matt Rhone (2a) were Deerfield’s big offensive guns.

-- At Lakeville, Conn., Avon Old Farms knocked host Hotchkiss from the ranks of the undefeated, returning home with a 6-3 win.

Nick Bonino (3g), Tom Atkinson (1g,2a), Cam Atkinson (2a), Patrick Mullane (1g,1a), Chris Wieland (2a), and James Chamness (1g,1a) paced the Winged Beavers attack.

Peter Massar (2g,1a) figured in all three Hotchkiss goals.

-- At Belmont, Mass., host Belmont Hill edged Thayer, 3-2. Jake Moscatel (1g,1a), Dawson Luke (1g,1a), and Sean Tierney (2a) each had two points for Belmont Hill. Justin Harnett (1g,1a) figured in both Thayer goals.

-- At Groton, Mass., Vermont Academy blanked host Groton, 6-0. Mike Allport (2g,2a), Justin Aquino (1g,2a), and Pasha Zand (1g,1a) led the Vermont Academy attack. John Rossie (22 saves) picked up the shutout.

-- At Andover, Mass., Phillips Andover Academy topped Tilton, 5-3. Joe Smith (2g), Sean Roches (2a), and Stephen Bury each had two points for Andover.

-- At Milton, Mass., Tyler O’Brien kicked out 28 of 29 shots to lead St. Paul’s to a 3-1 win over Milton. Peter Child, Cam Lanoue, and Ben Albertson each had a goal for St. Paul’s.

-- At Andover, NH, host Proctor topped Berwick, 6-3. Neil Ruffini (2g,1a), Chris Leach (2g), Dana Lucenta (1g,1a), and Matt Robertson (2a) led the way for the Hornets.

-- At Middletown, RI, St. George’s blanked Brooks, 5-0, behind a 25-save shutout from junior goaltender Kevin Corkery. Sophomore Jeff Ryan (2g,1a) and freshman Garrett Sider (3a) had big outings for the Dragons.

-- At Pawling, NY, Kent topped Trinity-Pawling, 6-4. Jon Schanke (1g,2a), Drew Daniels (1g,1a), and Regnars Alksnis (2a) had multiple point outings for Kent. Garrett Goodman (1g,1a) and Billy Sabia (1g,1a) led the way for T-P.

-- At Southborough, Mass., host St. Marks and Roxbury Latin battled to a 4-4 tie. Key contributors for Roxbury Latin were Shayne Anderson (1g,1a), Wayne Shepherd (1g,1a), Sean McCarthy (1g,1a), and Richie Iskra (2a). For St. Mark’s, Kevin Erving (1g,2a), Jeremiah Dargis (1g,1a), and Andrew Smith (1g,1a) were key contributors.

-- At New Milford, NY, Choate blanked Canterbury, 5-0. Scott Barchard had 32 saves for the shutout. Seniors Greg Manz (2g), A.J. Ferraro (1g,1a), Dan Cohen (1g,1a), and senior defenseman Ryan Corcoran (3a) led the Wild Boars’ attack.

-- At Byfield, Mass., Brian Day (1g,2a), Trevor Hines (2g), and Jason Michaud (1g,1a) led Governor Dummer Academy to a 7-0 win over BB&N. Maxime St. Pierre kicked out all 12 shots he faced in the GDA net.

-- At Yarmouth, Maine, a third period unassisted shorthanded goal by Trevor Hogan lifted New Hampton to a 2-1 win over North Yarmouth Academy.

-- At Meriden, NH, Exeter blanked host Kimball Union, 3-0. Tommy Clayton (2g) and Michael Doherty (1g,1a) led the way for Exeter, as did goaltender Jonathan Lee, who stopped all 26 shots he faced.

-- At West Hartford, Conn., Brunswick shut out host Kingswood-Oxford, 4-0. Sophomore goaltender Dan Cassidy stopped all 15 shots he faced. Christian Oberbeck (2g,1a), Justin Letizia (1g,2a), and J.e. Oberbeck (1g,1a) led the way for  Brunswick.

Sabky OT Goal Leads Choate Past Andover

Wallingford, Connecticut - Choate forward Greg Malley, a PG from Scituate, Massachusetts, dug the puck out of the corner from two Andover defenders and snapped a pass to linemate Sam Sabky. Sabky, cutting towards the net from the right side, fought off an Andover defender and tipped Malley’s pass past Andover goalie Glenn Stowell at 3:45 of overtime, giving Choate an exciting 3-2 overtime win here tonight.

Just two minutes earlier, Malley, who had played all night with a mission, controlled a loose puck at the Andover blueline and moved in towards the net with an Andover defenseman all over him. Undaunted, Malley kept his legs moving and pounded home a rebound underneath Stowell’s left pad in what appeared to be the game winner. One of the referees, however, blew the whistle and waved off the goal, claiming the net had been moved off its moorings.

The game began with Choate skating well and controlling much of the play. Outshooting Andover 11-5 in the first period, Choate was only able to get one shot past Stowell. On a faceoff to Stowell’s left, Choate’s Sabky cleanly won the draw, moving the puck back to defenseman Marc Nemec. Nemec blasted a slapshot past a totally screened Stowell, giving Choate the 1-0 lead.

In the second period Andover came out flying, seemingly finding their legs in the first intermission. The pressure, and the puck, were clearly in Choate’s end most of the second period, but the Choate defenders were blocking a ton of shots that never made it to Choate netminder Rob Wilechansky. Eleven minutes into the period and with Choate in need of a line change, Andover forward Bobby Farnham intercepted a center ice pass and spun towards the Choate zone. Farnham fed Ryan Heavey, who quickly snapped a pass to JJ McGregor. McGregor made a nice deke and fed linemate Andrew Cox who snapped his shot past Wilechansky to tie the game at 1-1.

In the third period the teams exchanged one goal apiece. Choate’s goal came 7:39 into the stanza as a very patient Mark Goggin moved in from the left side and snapped a bullet past Stowell’s stick side. The goal was unassisted.

Then, just five minutes later, and with Choate wearing out the carpet in the penalty box, Andover captain and forward Joe Smith moved in from the left side and wristed a shot over Wilechansky to knot the score at 2-2. Wes Stephanian assisted on the even-strength goal.

Regulation ended with the score tied at 2-2. In overtime, Choate outshot Andover 3-1.

1/4/07  Update Fri. 1/5: This afternoon's scheduled Kent @ South Kent game has, due to ice conditions at South Kent, been moved down the road to Kent. Game time is still 5:00 pm. This is the second time this season that South Kent has had to move a home game due to warm weather.

Coming Heat Wave Affecting Schedule

Due to El Niño and global warming, New England temperatures on Saturday are expected to reach into the low to mid-60s, which could made for some dicey ice conditions.

Northfield-Mt. Hermon is taking a pre-emptive strike, flip-flopping their games with Exeter.

That means instead of playing at home on Saturday, the Hoggers will go on the road to Exeter and play at 4:45 pm. The two teams will also be meeting on February 10. That game, originally scheduled to be played at Exeter, will be switched to NMH and will start at 6:00 pm.

For all weather-related changes, please notify us at:   information (at) ushr.com

5:00 pm – Taft 0 vs. Deerfield 0 (Odden Rink)

The format calls for each contest to be 25 minutes. Each team will play two games. The winner of the tournament will not be any one school, but rather the East Division or the West Division. West Div. schools are listed first in the above schedule; East Div. schools second.

Notes:

As these were a series of 25-minute scrimmages, the results obviously don’t count. In the same vein, shots and score sheets weren’t kept. We can tell you some basics, but not in any complete sense as games were going on at two rinks simultaneously, and fans, friends, college and pro scouts moved freely from one rink to another. Each team’s first game tended to be tentative. Some teams were able to practice before arriving; others weren’t able to practice at all. The later games, not surprisingly, were infinitely better, and served to whet the appetite for the second half of the season.

This jamboree was an excellent idea. Perhaps, in time, it will evolve into a full-fledged jamboree with full-length games played over – or right after – Thanksgiving break, when the teams have a couple of weeks of practice under their belt. And perhaps other prep leagues will follow suit.

As for the games, Choate beat T-P, 1-0, with Fred Masotta scoring the lone goal and Scott Barchard getting the demi-shutout. The younger Goggin stood out for Choate; ninth grader Brandon Moore was T-P’s best prospect. Brian Foster called a time out with two seconds left.…. Taft edged Westminster 2-1 behind goals from Bobby Kramer and Andrew Balysky… Hotchkiss blanked Loomis, 3-0 – we missed that one .… Salisbury blanked Avon, 1-0, with Anthony Borelli getting the demi-shutout and Matt Masucci, who arrived in the slot at precisely the right moment, getting the lone goal… Loomis blanked Trinity-Pawling 1-0, leaving T-P scoreless for the day…. Kent and Westminster skated to a 1-1 tie. Robbie Veriker scored for Kent. Westy’s goal was a pretty one, as Julien Boutet finished off a nice passing sequence with linemates Ryan Riffe and Nick Pitsikoulis…. Hotchkiss tied Deerfield, 1-1. Alex Killorn, who’s getting attention from the Ivies as well as BC, BU, and UNH, scored the Big Green’s goal, hitting the top corner from a spot halfway between the top of the right faceoff circle and the blue line. Doug Kinney countered for Hotchkiss, also a nice top-corner strike…. Deerfield then went right back out and skated to a 0-0 deadlock with Taft…. Avon finished the day by blanking Kent, 3-0. Rick Longobardi, Tom Mapes, and Chris Wieland scored for the Winged Beavers and Randy Wolcott allowed no goals…. And that was it… The ride home was illuminated by an incandescent full moon. If there were a reflective layer of snow on the ground, this typist could have driven back to Boston without headlights.

-- At Belmont, Mass., host Belmont Hill topped Milton Academy, 5-2. Matt McCollem notched a hat trick, with the final goal an empty-netter. Mark Dube had a goal and two assists and senior goaltender Matt Gedman kicked out 34 of 36 for the win. Kyle Mountain and Brandon Nunn scored for Milton.

-- At Byfield, Mass., freshman Cody Ferriero scored a late third period goal to lift Governor Dummer to a 1-1 tie with Lawrence Academy.

-- At Exeter, NH, Tabor scored two goals in the final minute of play to come back and beat host Exeter 5-4. Exeter had a 2-1 lead after two, but the two teams combined to score six goals in the final period. With 6:16 remaining Exeter tied the game at 3-3 on a Mark Seager goal. With 1:43 left, Exeter went ahead 4-3 on a Jeff Reppucci goal. But they couldn’t hold the lead. With 24 seconds remaining Tabor’s Andrew Jelinek tied it up at 4-4. And with 10 seconds remaining Mark Colp scored the game winner for Tabor.

For Exeter, Tommy Clayton (1g,2a) and Cam Chaput (2a) led the scoring.

-- At Easthampton, Mass., Canterbury edged host Williston-Northampton, 4-2. Canterbury got goals from Ryan Fritz, Dan Hebert, Rob DiNicola and, with an empty-netter, Tony Klonowski.

Phil Bronner and Ryan Colwell were Williston’s goal scorers.

Caleb Luther picked up the win in the Canterbury net, kicking out 27 shots.

-- At Plymouth, NH, host Holderness topped New Hampton, 3-1. Nick Neron, Aki Uola, and Kyle Baker scored for Holderness. Kyle Krulac added a pair of assists. Andrew Guay stopped 21 shots for the win.

-- At Needham, Mass., a Mike Griffin goal gave Nobles a 1-0 win over host St. Sebastian’s. John Muse stopped all 30 shots he faced for Nobles, and Connor Toomey kicked out 25 of 26 for St. Sebastian’s.
