Cushing defeats Culver; Wins Watkins Title

Ashburnham, Mass. – Cushing Academy, behind a pair of goals from Matt White and a 29-save effort by T.J. Massie, topped Culver Academy 4-2 in the title game of the 16th Annual Watkins Tournament here this afternoon.

The game-winning goal, scored by White, came with 37 seconds remaining in the second period. Cushing senior defenseman Sean Coughlin picked up a loose puck in his own end and one-timed a tape-to-tape pass to a wide open Broc Little at center ice. Little, who would be named tournament MVP, skated into the Culver zone and took his shot, which Culver goalie Jason Torf was able to block, but not control. Anticipating accurately, White, a junior center from Long Beach, California, fought through a Culver defenseman and pounced on the rebound, knocking the puck past Torf for his second goal of the game and putting Cushing up, 3-1.

Each team would score a goal in the third period.

The game, which began wide-open and absent of the cat-and-mouse strategy often seen in championship games, featured both Cushing and Culver displaying significant periods of puck control. Scoring opportunities, though, were few, as both defenses were tenacious and both goalies solid. Massie made one save in particular late in the first, the third rapid-fire save of a sequence, kicking out his left leg and robbing Culver defenseman Michael Kretschmer of a choice rebound opportunity.

After one period, it was a 0-0 game, but a hitting-from-behind penalty (major, DQ) to Culver senior defenseman Michael Sdao at 16:52 would take its toll later on. Culver, exhibiting good team speed, outshot Cushing 8-6 in the period.

The second period began with Cushing still enjoying a 5-on-4 advantage for another 3:52. White, moving into the Culver zone on the right side, was strong on the puck and crashed the net, despite having a Culver defenseman draped all over his back. White did the only thing he could, flipping the puck on net. The shot seemed innocent enough, but it was a bit of a change-up. Torf couldn’t control it, and the puck trickled past him, putting Cushing up 1-0 just 56 seconds in. Sean Coughlin assisted on the goal.

Cushing scored again 11 minutes later when Yale recruit Little scooped up a perfect pass from sophomore defenseman Dave Warsofsky at center ice and out-raced a Culver defenseman into the Culver zone. Little, crossing the blueline step-by-step with the defender, cut towards the net at full speed, took his shot, and then banged his own rebound past Torf to put the Penguins up 2-0.

Cushing’s second goal seemed to wake up the Culver troops, and with sustained even-strength pressure over the next few minutes, Culver’s persistence was rewarded when Dave Warsofky, whose presence was felt all afternoon, was called for a holding penalty at 14:28. Just 27 seconds later, junior forward Sebastian Geoffrion banged home a rebound off a Kretschmer shot, cutting Cushing’s lead to 2-1.

However, a little under three minutes later, White would score the game winner for Cushing, sending the Penguins into the second intermission with a 3-1 lead. In the second period, Culver again out-shot Cushing, this time by a 16-11 margin.

In the third period the hitting picked up a bit and became noticeably more personal. While there were only five total penalties called in the first two periods, there were six in the third, as the urgency of the clock began to take its toll. At the 6:22 mark Little was called for holding, and at 7:16 Coughlin was whistled for tripping. Culver quickly took advantage. Moving the puck beautifully in Cushing’s zone with the 5-on-3 advantage, Culver junior defenseman Steven Hoshaw flipped a pass to his defensive partner, Kretschmer, who had moved lower into the slot. Kretschmer wasted no time, blasting a slapshot past Massie for the power-play goal. Suddenly, it was a one-goal game again.

But Cushing didn’t panic. Less than six minutes later, Cushing regained the two-goal lead as sophomore forward Torin Snydeman found the back of the net. Casey Brugman and Neil Lavanchy picked up assists on the play.

Culver would call a time out with 25 seconds remaining and their goalie pulled, but failed to score as the game ended quietly.

“Culver is one heck of a good hockey team”, Cushing head coach Steve Jacobs said after the game. “They are solid all the way up and down their roster. They really work hard.”

Culver head coach Al Clark said, “Obviously we are disappointed.”

Notes:

-- Could it be time for mandatory face shields for officials? One of the referees in this championship came close to a serious eye injury when, blocked in by four different players in the corner, he took a stick dangerously close to his right eye.

-- The game was a rematch of exactly two weeks earlier, when, in the Lawrence-Groton Tournament, Culver, with the help of four unanswered second period goals, defeated Cushing 6-2.

CM Tops St. Seb’s in Mutch Cup

Allston, Mass. -- Catholic Memorial senior forward Ryan Smith scored a pair of goals to lead Catholic Memorial to a 4-1 win over St. Sebastian’s in the Kevin T. Mutch Memorial Hockey game, played tonight before a good-sized crowd at Harvard’s Bright Hockey Center.

CM outplayed St. Sebastian’s, coming up with a strong defensive effort, not only outshooting the Arrows 34-24, but limiting them to just a handful of decent scoring opportunities. In addition, CM was extremely efficient moving the puck out of their end, through center ice, and taking it to the net, where Arrows goaltender Connor Toomey was not given a lot of support by his defensemen.

The win was career win number 500 for Catholic Memorial head coach Bill Hanson. CM now holds a 6-5-2 advantage in the series between the two teams.

Catholic Memorial got on the board with 1:52 left in the first period  -- 15 minute periods were played here – when a shot from inside the blue line appeared to bounce off the shin pad of a CM player in front and was redirected past Toomey on the glove side. Senior Brian Rosata, a Bowdoin recruit, was given credit for the goal. Defenseman Mike Keenan and forward Mike Collins got assists.

CM scored again in the second period, on a nice 2-on-1, as sophomore Billy Carey, the younger brother of Salisbury’s Paul Carey, slid a nice pass across to Smith who had plenty of net to shoot at and made his shot a good one, putting his team up 2-0 just 2:56 into the period. Junior defenseman Peter Starrette picked up the second assist on the play.

The Knights struck again just 2:57 into the third when Keenan fed senior Angelo Todesca, who skated down the right side into the St. Sebastian’s end and fired a low, hard shot past Toomey to put CM up 3-0.

CM put the game out of reach when sophomore defenseman Dan Furlong skated it down the left side, carried it behind the net, then put it out front onto the stick of Smith, who slid it past Toomey to make it 4-0 at the 5:29 mark.

St. Sebastian’s was able to break up the shutout bid by Knights senior goaltender John Jay off a solo effort by Dominic Jancaterino. The sophomore from Needham carried the puck from his end, and through center ice down the left side. As Jancaterino entered the CM zone he cut to the center and let go a nice wrist shot that beat Jay high glove side for an unassisted goal with 4:58 left in regulation.

Afterward, CM coach Hanson said, “Defensively we played well in all three zones, and we minimized turnovers, got good goaltending, and timely scoring.”

“Right now, we have kids who are ‘no-names.’ They won’t be no-names for long, though.”

St. Sebastian’s coach Steve Dagdigian said, “We seem to have lost our energy from the weekend. I would have liked to have seen more energy early – we have to come to play. This team has been successful making the smart little plays, but if you get away from that you just have a bunch of guys on ice. You have to play smart hockey.”

”We have no excuses,” Dagdigian added.

Note:

Money raised from this game is contributed to various charities in the memory of Kevin Mutch, a 1980 graduate of St. Sebastian’s who went on to play for Boston University. In 1991, Mutch returned to his alma mater as a coach, but in September of 1992 was struck and killed by a car while crossing a road on a foggy Cape Cod night.

The proceeds from tonight’s game will go to the Children’s Hospital in Boston.

Kevin’s brother, Tom Mutch, currently the women’s coach at Boston College, was on hand to present the trophy to the winners.

Hotchkiss Takes Flood-Marr in 2 OTs

Dedham, Mass. – A goal by senior Adam Kaiser at 7:50 of the second overtime and some stellar goaltending by junior John Yanchek lifted Hotchkiss to a 4-3 win over Salisbury here today.

For Yanchek, who was named tournament MVP, it was his second win over Salisbury this season, as he blanked the defending prep – and Flood-Marr – champions on Dec. 6 at Salisbury. Coming into today’s game, Yanchek had allowed only four goals in six games – and just one of those was even-strength.

The Hillsborough, NJ native was on his game early, as he made a couple nice saves on Paul Carey in the first five minutes of play.

But the vaunted Salisbury attack, which woke up with a vengeance here, scoring 14 unanswered goals since trailing Westminster 3-0 in opening day action on Friday, made it 15 in a row -- and then 16 -- before the end of the first period.

First, Brian Gibbons flicked home a clean rebound to make it 1-0 at 6:17. At 10:56, Salisbury extended the lead to 2-0 when Matt Masucci poked a puck home out of a scrum.

When the first period ended, it looked like Salisbury, the faster, more highly-skilled team, was on their way to their third consecutive Flood-Marr title.

But nobody told Hotchkiss.

The Bearcats came out in the second period with claws bared and got on the board at 3:58 when Chris Gudmondson took a shot from the right side which rebounded out to Brendan Deblois on the far side. DeBlois had plenty of net to shoot at and didn’t miss, making it a one-goal lead.

Hotchkiss tied up the game at 2-2 at 10:58 when burly junior defenseman Brandon Hew took it hard to the net and just pushed it through a pile, and over the goal line.

Hotchkiss went up 3-2 at 4:27 of the third when Hew, this time on the power play, picked up his second straight goal, this one off a blast from the left point with Salisbury’s Dan Reed off for hooking.

Yanchek came up big in the middle of the period, making a nice save on Masucci, and then stoning Gibbons from point-blank range.

Salisbury, trailing 3-2 with 1:29 left in regulation, called a time out. When play resumed, Borelli had been pulled for the extra skater.

Salisbury put heavy pressure on Hotchkiss and, with 22 seconds left and some heavy traffic in front of Yanchek, a Hotchkiss player put his hand over the puck in the crease. Salisbury was awarded a penalty shot.

With a chance to pull his team’s bacon out of the fire, senior Michael Biega didn’t disappoint, smoothly moving down the right side and then firing a low hard shot inside the far corner to tie it at 3-3.

In the first OT, Salisbury had opportunities to put it away, but Yanchek was up to the task.

Midway through the extra frame, Hotchkiss, forced to skate with the faster Salisbury squad, began to run out of gas, but hung in there, battling for every square inch of ice.

As the middle of the second overtime approached, and with both teams slowing down, Yanchek made a nice save on Salisbury’s Joe Capuano. Less than a couple minutes after that, a faceoff to Borelli’s left was won cleanly by Hotchkiss sophomore center Zach Martin, who drew it to Kaiser.

Kaiser ripped it top corner and the celebration was on.

Afterward, Hotchkiss coach Damon White said the win was about two things: “Goaltending… and the kids’ believing in their ability to make things happen. They can deal with adversity. They competed hard. Salisbury is the more highly-skilled team, but our kids -- like Irving, Yanchek, Buicko, Colaianni – just kept battling.”

What did White say to his team when they were down 2-0 after the first? “We had made a couple of mistakes in the defensive zone and they had made us pay,” White said. “I told them to be more attuned to these things – and just keep working.”

“The bottom line,” White added, “is that Yanchek has been phenomenal.”

Salisbury coach Dan Donato said, “Two good teams battled here and they got the bounce at the end – I thought (Hotchkiss) did a good job on faceoffs. They played well and battled. Both teams really played hard. We had a ton of chances in OT but their goalie was the difference.”

Donato acknowledged that his team was “a little flat” at times, but, he added, “in the last 5-7 minutes we played with real urgency.”

“I’m excited about the weekend. We found ourselves as a team here and now we know how hard we’ll have to work to be a good team.”

Notes:

-- Goals were hard to come by here. There were 11 shutouts, including a pair of 0-0 games. In another ten games at least one team was held to two or fewer goals.

-- The win gave Hotchkiss their fifth Flood-Marr title, with the other wins coming in 1971, 1974, 1994, and 2003.

-- The last 14 Flood-Marr titles have been won by only four teams, with Deerfield picking up seven titles in that time, Hotchkiss three, Westminster two, and Salisbury two.

-- The title game will be considered a tie for purposes of the official NEPSIHA won-lost record because the winning goal came after the five minute mark in overtime. For an OT win in tournament play to go into the books as a win, the winning goal must be scored within the first five minutes, just as if it were a regular, non-tournament game.

Taft Edges Choate, 4-3; Wins Lawrenceville Tournament

Lawrenceville, N.J.  – Taft forward Nick Liotta picked up a rebound in front of a sprawled Choate goalie and banged in the game-winning goal just a little over six minutes into the third period today, giving Taft a 4-3 win and the tournament championship.

The play began innocently, with Taft rushing the puck in on the right side. Andrew Balysky took the initial shot from the right circle, but Choate goalie Rob Wilechansky didn’t seem to see the puck sitting in front of his left pad. Liotta calmly took it, moved a little to his left, and banged it home.

The championship game began in a business-like, cat-and-mouse fashion for the entire first period. Each team was skating well, and each team had some chances, but the emphasis early was on defense, forechecking, and puck control. The score was 0-0 after one period, with each team taking six shots on net.

But things picked up in the second, as Taft scored first just 1:18 in when defenseman Drew MacKenzie patiently worked the puck into the Choate zone. Controlling the puck in low behind the net, MacKenzie fed off to Andrew Balysky. Balysky took a shot that hit off the cross bar, and bounced straight down behind the Choate goalie. Forward Sean Curran pounced on it, giving Taft the 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Choate evened it up on a pretty power-play goal. Controlling the puck well with a 5-on-3 advantage, Choate moved the puck quickly and effectively in tick-tack-toe fashion. Choate captain Ryan Corcoran, moving toward the net from the right circle, began the sequence by deking a Taft defender and feeding defenseman Connor Googin who was moving in from the blueline. Googin wasted little time and immediately fed his younger brother, Mark Goggin, who was stationed at the right post of the Taft goal. The younger Goggin flipped the puck past a scrambling Andrew Margolin, who had no chance on the shot, and the score was tied at 1-1.

Three minutes later Taft regained the lead on a booming George Hughes slapshot from the blueline. Nick Liotta and Andrew Balysky assisted.

Now settled down and controlling the puck well, the Rhinos scored again less than two minutes later. Choate appeared to be on their heels a bit after the second Taft score, and they were unable to clear the puck from their own zone for almost two full minutes. Taft captain Bobby Kramer began this score with some solid work along the far boards, stripping the puck away from two Choate players. Kramer spotted Sean Curran in the slot and fed him the puck, and Curran took a shot that Wilechansky could not control. Jeremy Dwyer moved in from the left side and punched in the rebound, giving Taft a 3-1 lead with just under three minutes left in the period.

The second period ended with no further scoring. Choate fired seven shots at Margolin, while Taft had nine shots in the period.

Taft entered the third period with a 3-1 lead, but reminiscent of the playoff final last March, Taft saw their lead evaporate quickly. Choate head coach Pat Dennehy must have gotten his players’ attention with some choice words in between periods, as the Wild Boars came out flying and scored two goals, just 55 seconds apart, in the opening three minutes, and suddenly the game was tied.

On the first of these two Choate goals, Taft was back on their heels and the Choate forwards were relentless in pressuring the Taft defenseman.  Skating with their best legs of the afternoon, Choate moved the puck around the Taft zone almost as if they were on a power play. Choate defenseman Connor Goggin, who had the primary assist on all three Choate goals, found an open Anthony Depietto in front of the Taft net and Depietto immediately buried his chance, cutting Taft’s lead to 3-2.

Just 55 seconds later, Choate scored again, this time on a fast and pretty sequence that saw Mark Goggin hit a speeding Greg Manz, and Manz wasted no time rifling his shot past Margolin.

The score was suddenly 3-3, and a sense of deja vu came over Taft head coach Dan Murphy, who promptly called a time out.

Last spring, you will recall, Taft held a similar 3-1 lead going into the third period of the playoff championship game against Salisbury, only to see Salisbury score two quick goals and then the eventual game-winner. During that flurry of goals, Murphy decided not to call time out, relying on a calm coaching staff to settle down his boys. This time he knew better.

“Don’t be afraid to lose”, Taft coach Dan Murphy told his team during the time out. “Go out and play to win.”

Taft did just that.

With rejuvenated skating legs, Taft turned the tide of momentum and began consistent pressure in the Choate zone. Forward Jesse Root dug the puck away from a Choate defender along the boards and kicked it to linemate Andrew Balysky. Balysky calmly moved towards the Choate net and threw the puck at the net. Nick Liotta then banged home the goal that would be the game winner.

Choate had a golden opportunity to tie the score with four minutes left in regulation. Skating with a 5-on-3 advantage, Choate forward Sam Sabky picked up a loose puck in the slot, and snapped a wrist shot just over Taft goalie Andrew Margolin’s right shoulder. Margolin, who was still down from an earlier shot, saw the puck clang off the cross bar and drop harmlessly into the corner.

Notes:

- - This win gives Taft its fifth Lawrenceville Tournament championship in the past eight years, and seventh in the 59-year history of the tournament.

- - In 59 years Lawrenceville has never won this tournament, but arguably played well enough to win it this year. Their fate was sealed, however, when, after leading 4-1 in the semi-final game against Choate the previous night, the Larries gave up four unanswered goals over the final 25 minutes of play. During this stretch their focus seemed to shift from scoring goals to hitting bodies, and it cost them.

- - Choate, who won this tournament in 2004 and was the runner-up last year (losing to Belmont Hill), has taken home a championship six times since its inception in 1949.

- - St. Andrews, one of Canada’s oldest and largest independent all-boys boarding and day schools, replaced Upper Canada College this year as the Canadian invitee. The two schools  generally alternate, attending every four or five years. St. Andrews dropped their opener to Choate 8-6, then won their next two games, beating NMH 2-1 and Nichols School 6-0.

- - The referee crew, headed again this year by Bob Ritchie, did an outstanding job throughout the tournament. Ritchie is heading to Sweden in a couple weeks to be on the referee crew for the World Juniors Tournament.

South Kent Tops Exeter in OT Thriller, 7-6

Exeter, NH - In a back-and-forth shootout that saw six lead changes, South Kent edged host Phillips Exeter by a 7-6 score today to remain undefeated.

Senior Rem Vanderbeek scored a late game-tying goal for South Kent, while Joe Pereira notched the game-winner in OT, to break the deadlock between the evenly-matched teams.

The outcome brought back visions of last year's Exeter/South Kent tumble, in which South Kent also came back to win 7-6 with two late goals.

This time, with Exeter up 6-5 with under four minutes to play, South Kent sophomore forward Daniel Pelletier forced a turnover at the Big Red blueline, and fed to the streaking Vanderbeek in the right slot. The postgraduate forward from New Jersey calmly walked in and snapped the puck in between Exeter goaltender Jonathan Lee's right armpit for the game-tying tally.

After South Kent killed a crucial penalty to end regulation, both teams struggled to get going in the extra frame, before Exeter captain Michael Doherty was whistled for hooking with 2:40 to go in OT.

It only took a minute until Vanderbeek fed Pereira at the left dot on the power play, and his low shot evaded Lee, clanging off both posts and into the net to ignite the visitors from Connecticut.

"Rem is an absolute leader," said South Kent head coach Geoff Marottolo after the game, "I've never had anyone like him before."

With senior goaltender Sergiy Sorokolat prepping for World Junior play with the Ukranian National Team, junior Derek Strang manned the net for South Kent today in the wild contest.

Exeter came out strong in the first period, ringing a post or two, and struck first on a Jon Dwyer goal. But South Kent quickly responded when junior Joe Diamond's wrister popped high in the air out of Lee's glove, and landed just beyond the stunned goaltender and into the net.

In the second period, Exeter opened a two goal lead with two perimeter shots that found their way past Strang's blocker-side. South Kent's opportunistic and quick to transition offense would respond in kind, however, as the six goals in six minutes streak began.

After Jon Lee was bowled over to the ice and somewhat dazed halfway through the second, South Kent went on a scoring spree, lighting the lamp three times in a minute-and-a-half, all on shots in close proximity to the goal.

South Kent's 4-3 lead would not last long, as Jon Dwyer scored his second of the game for Exeter, deflecting a Joey White slapshot in front of the net for the equalizer. Two minutes later, while killing a 5-on-3 shorthanded situation, the Red struck again when captain Doherty drove two defenders to the net, leaving the puck at the right dot for Ben Tsujiara to roof over Strang's head.

Exeter continued the offensive pressure throughout the second period, but was denied three times in the last two minutes by Strang. "[Derek] hung in there," said Marottolo, "he made some big saves today that kept us in the game."

Momentum swung back South Kent's way in the 3rd, as the visiting Cardinals cycled the puck well and manufactured shots with the flow of the game back in place after a penalty-laden second stanza. Senior Nick Lampson struck only six minutes in to tie the game at 5-5, as he drove from the neutral zone, dangled past a defender at the right dot, shot and collected his own rebound for the goal.

Exeter was quick to answer yet again, when a minute later Doherty found open space in the slot, before shoveling a backhand saucer pass to streaking junior Tom Clayton at the right post for the one-timer. With the 6-5 lead, Exeter had an opportunity to ice the game when South Kent's Lampson went off for a 5 minute major penalty, but the Big Red took a penalty of its own to stifle the attack.

Before Vanderbeek and Pereira's late-game heroics sent the South Kent supporters home happy, the Cardinals bench and fans were in an uproar as the visitors had to kill virtually half a period of penalties with time winding down. Joe Pereira's late breakaway attempt also ended with Exeter's Lee poking and tripping the prep league's leading scorer, with no call made.

The first lines of South Kent and Exeter both tallied 5 goals for their teams today, and the speedy, skilled, and crafty Pereira-Vanderbeek-Lampson line was an interesting contrast to Exeter's first unit of Dwyer, Doherty, and Clayton, with Tsujiara jumping in at times. The Big Red top line, led by captain Doherty, features more size and physicality, and all are crisp and heady players.

South Kent outshot Exeter 40-27 today, but Exeter had its fair share of grade A opportunities. With the loss, Exeter drops to 4-2-0, while South Kent stays unbeaten at 8-0-0.

After the game, Exeter head coach Dana Barbin captured the glum picture. "Any time you give up seven goals, there's something you need to work on. We gave up this game with some bad turnovers, and to take a penalty to neutralize a five minute power play, and then to take another one in overtime, it's just a bad loss. South Kent is talented, skillful and nasty, they're shaping up to be a team that no one will want to face come late season."

Across the hall, an elated coach Marottolo gave credit to the opposition. "Dana's team came ready to play. They're real competitive on the puck, they dictated play, but we were patient enough with the puck and we'll certainly take the win. We gave up six goals, but most of them were from the perimeter, and if we can keep the shots to the outside, we should be okay and can play our game."

Brugman Paces Penguins

Exeter, NH – A pair of second-period goals by sophomore LW Casey Brugman led Cushing Academy to a 3-1 road win at Exeter today.

The goals came 79 seconds apart in the second period. At the time, Cushing was holding a 1-0 lead on a first period Dave Warsofsky point shot that went in off an Exeter player.

Brugman struck first when, moving down from the high slot, the Winthrop, Mass. native took a nice pass from PG defenseman Ryan Warsofsky and wristed a shot past Exeter senior goaltender Jonathan Lee to make it 2-0 at the 10:39 mark.

On his next goal, Brugman was stationed at the right side of the crease and snapped one under the crossbar. Sophomores Torin Snydeman and Dave Warsofsky picked up assists on the goal, which came at 11:58, and made the score 3-0.

Exeter actually controlled play territorially in the second period, outshooting Cushing 14-8. Penguins junior goalie T.J. Massie was kept busy, stopping everything that came his way, though he didn’t have to stand on his head.

In the third, with 10:02 remaining, Exeter went on a 5-on-3, but called a timeout and pulled Lee to make it a 6-on-3. It paid off 28 seconds later when Ben Tsujiura scored on a wrister from the high slot – pretty much the same spot on the ice Brugman scored his first goal from – to make it a 3-1 game.

As the second penalty expired, Exeter had a chance to cut the lead to one as a puck was loose in a scrum around Massie, but they couldn’t nudge it over the goal line.

This was a different game than a lot of Cushing-Exeter matches we’ve seen, many of which have been tong wars. This was a more wide-open game, with a lot of skating room. Seventeen penalties were called – ten against Cushing; seven against Exeter – but it was a clean game, played hard but without animosity.

Cushing is a young team, heavily laden with sophomores and juniors, but they look like they’ll get even better as they mature. They should be in the hunt all season. While we still have a lot of prep teams to see, it’s unlikely we’ll see a more skilled line in prep hockey this season than Cushing’s trio of senior Broc Little, junior center Matt White, and sophomore Ryan Bourque. They’re a pleasure to watch. And if they don’t score, others – like Brugman today – can pick up the slack. Defensively, Sean Coughlin, the team captain, anchors the blue line, and Massie is solid in net. And then there’s Dave Warsofsky…

Exeter’s attack is more of a one-line affair, centered around senior Michael Doherty who lacks speed but is extremely savvy with the puck. Tommy Clayton, Ben Tsujiura, and Jamie Core help out, too. Exeter coach Dana Barbin will have to find more scorers in order to win games like this one.

“Our effort was terrific," Barbin said. "I have a fair number of new players. This is a game to build on. The kids see we can play with anyone. I’m not saying we’re as good as Cushing. Massie played well for them. And Cushing contests everything. They block things. They get in the way of shots with sticks and legs. They defend better than any team we’ve played against.”

”I’m pleased with my team. I didn’t know what to expect. We played Cushing tough, and lost. They’re an unhappy group right now but I told them to keep their chins up. I give Cushing credit. You have to play your best game against them – and have some good fortune, too.”

Across the hall, and around the corner, Cushing coach Steve Jacobs said, "We were opportunistic. “I thought our effort was there. We brought a lot of energy. Our penalty killing and goaltending were outstanding. We had some nice chances we didn’t capitalize on, but we’ll take the win. This is always a tough place to play.”

Taft Edges Avon, 3-2

Avon, Conn. – Taft, trailing 2-1 on the road after one period, rebounded with a pair of second period goals to edge Avon Old Farms, 3-2, here today.

The winning goal, which broke a 2-2 tie, came at the 7:48 mark of the second period. Taft junior Tommy Cantwell won a battle for the puck in the right corner and passed the puck out front to sophomore Robbie Bourdon, a sophomore from Ile Bizard, Quebec. Bourdon snapped a shot past Avon senior goaltender Randy Wolcott. That was it for the scoring. For the final 28 plus minutes both teams fired blanks.

Most of the scoring came in the first period and Taft wasted no time getting on the board. Fourteen seconds in, junior Andrew Balysky knocked in a high rebound of a shot from Bryan Curran at the right point to make it 1-0.

Avon tied it up at 1-1 at the 5:20 mark when senior Ryan Butler carried the puck down the right boards into the Taft end and then hit sophomore Pat Mullane, at the top of the crease, with a pass. Mullane’s shot beat Taft senior goaltender Andrew Margolin.

Right after that, Taft defenseman Kevin Reich took a five-minute major for hitting from behind. To compound Taft’s troubles, defenseman Bobby Torney was then whistled for a trip.

Avon had two minutes of 5-on-3, and they didn’t waste the opportunity as senior defenseman Brian Malchoff made a nice diagonal pass to Chris Wieland, stationed at the bottom of the right faceoff circle. Wieland snapped one short side to give Avon a 2-1 lead. It would be the last goal Avon would score – Margolin would shut them down for the next 45 minutes.

At the 2:27 mark of the second period, Taft tied the game up when junior Kevin Nugent knocked home the rebound of a Bobby Kramer shot to make it 2-2.

A little over five minutes later, Bourdon would score the game winner, and the Rhinos would hold on through a scoreless third period and skate off with the win.

Although the score was close, this game was not a classic Winged Beavers-Rhinos tilt. Seventeen penalties were called – ten against Taft; seven against Avon – and the game never really developed any flow. Both teams had a hard time stringing together passes, or getting themselves in good shooting areas. There was, however, a lot of driving to the net and just blasting away – and a good bit of physical play.

Avon outshot Taft, 41-32, and the difference in the game was Margolin. The Taft defense aided him out by aggressively clearing Avon forwards from the front of the net, and minimizing second chance shots.

Taft coach Danny Murphy said, “We have a good nucleus who played a subtle role last year, but really stepped up today. And obviously Andrew Margolin played super. He was the rock today.”

“In the second period we got some momentum, got Avon back on their heels a bit, and cashed in. Avon kept coming at us. We bent but we didn’t break.”

Avon coach John Gardner was suffering from the flu but didn’t let it stop his streak of 32 years of coaching without missing a single game. Afterward, he said, “Their goalie played well, and we didn’t get enough traffic in front. Taft was opportunistic. They pounced on rebounds and played a good hockey game. My stars didn’t move the puck like they should. My take is simply this: we have to get better.

Notes:

Avon forward Cam Atkinson, a Boston College recruit, was also suffering from the flu. He played a little bit in the first, sat out the second, and came back for a few shifts in the third. It just wasn’t his day, and it wasn’t Avon’s.

The two teams meet again in exactly one month – Jan. 6, at Taft.

Over a Hundred Shots on Net, and Forty Penalties

Lawrenceville, NJ – In a game featuring a total of 104 shots on net and 40 penalties, South Kent topped Lawrenceville 4-1.

South Kent senior Joe Pereira scored off a patient set-up by Joey Diamond six minutes into the third period to give South Kent a lead they would not surrender.

On the game winning play, defenseman Jake Vitali picked off an errant Lawrenceville pass just inside his own blue line and snapped a rink-wide pass to Diamond streaking up the left side. Moving in on a 2-on-1, Diamond waited and waited until both Lawrenceville’s defenseman and goaltender committed to him. Diamond then slid a pass to his right to Pereira who snapped the puck into a wide open net.

The key to the game was the fact that South Kent took advantage of their power play chances, while Lawrenceville did not. Both goalies, Lawrenceville’s Cody McKinney, a native of Weston, Florida, and South Kent’s Sergiy Sorokolat, from Kharkiv, Ukraine,  made several key saves on breakaways and short-handed situations. If two stars were given out at the end of the game, these two would be the recipients.

South Kent outshot Lawrenceville, 57-47.

Kent Edges Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville, NJ -- Kent, trailing 2-0 early in the game and down 4-3 with less than four minutes to play, hit their mark when senior defenseman Regnars Alksnis scored a power-play goal with just 3:34 left in regulation to tie the score at 4-4. Junior Drew Daniels assisted on the goal.

Then, with just 57 seconds remaining, Kent struck again. Daniels, controlling the puck low in the Lawrenceville zone, drew a Lawrenceville defender towards him, then calmly moved the puck to linemate -- and brother -- Justin Daniels, who immediately fed junior Jon Schanke, who deked Lawrenceville’s stretched-out goalie Cody McKinney for the game-winner.

Kent added an empty-netter with 17 seconds left to close it out.

“We survived an ugly one,” said Kent head coach Matt Herr. “Our boys never quit.”

For Kent, juniors Drew Daniels (1g,2a), Danny Colvin (2g), and Justin Daniels (2a) were the big guns. For Lawrenceville, seniors Chris Pronchik (1g,2a), Chris Zaires (3a), and Martin Drolet (1g,1a) were the big offensive contributors.

Nobles Calls on Their Muse

Dedham, Mass. – A gritty and determined Belmont Hill squad threw everything they had at Nobles today, outshooting their hosts 46-22, but coming out on the losing end of a 3-0 score.

The difference: Nobles senior goaltender John Muse, who, in front of highly interested coaches from Princeton, Harvard, and UMass, all of whom are recruiting him, put on a show, totally stonewalling Belmont Hill and emerging with a 46-save shutout.

In the first period, Belmont Hill played with a ton of energy, causing Nobles to take penalties, crashing the net, and just keeping a ton of pressure on the hosts, outshooting them 20-7. The whole story of the first period was Muse, who single-handedly kept his team in the game.

In the second, the Nick Resor-Josh Franklin-Mike Griffin line was buzzing right off the bat for Nobles, and, in the first minute of play, Belmont Hill goalie Matt Gedman was called on to make a sparkling glove save – as would befit the son of a former major league catcher -- off Griffin.

Belmont Hill, however, would begin to pay a price for their aggressiveness, as they would take four penalties on the period, to just one for Nobles. Belmont Hill did a good job on the PK, killing them off aggressively.

However, at 5:24 of the second, Nobles, after some sustained pressure, got on the board, as junior defenseman Greg White wristed home the rebound of a Griffin shot to put the home team up 1-0.

Nobles kept the pressure on. Less than 30 seconds after White’s goal, Gedman was forced to make an excellent glove save on Nobles junior forward Matt Marshall.

With 19 seconds left in the period, Griffin sprung Franklin free with a nice pass, leaving Belmont Hill defenseman Kevin McNamara, who played a strong game, no choice but to hook Franklin down to prevent the clean breakaway.

Nobles started the third period on the power play and, at the 43 second mark, with a delayed penalty called on Belmont Hill, cashed in, as junior defenseman Chris Steele fired a bad angle shot from the right corner that somehow found the back of the net to make it 2-0 Nobles.

Belmont Hill didn’t quit, though, keeping pressure on Nobles. Halfway through the period Muse came up with a great glove save on Belmont Hill’s Mark Dube, who played with energy all through the game.

With 2:41 left in regulation, Franklin, Nobles’ junior centerman, with his team shorthanded, curled out of the left corner and fired a wrister high glove side to make it 3-0.

Afterward, Belmont Hill coach Ken Martin said the difference in the game was Muse. “Their goalie played great,” he said.

“I thought the first period was good two-way hockey,” he added. “In the second they took advantage of their power play opportunities. In the third I thought our kids showed a lack of experience and composure, turning the puck over in bad spots. But I have to give Nobles credit. That’s a good strong team. They will contend all season long.”

Nobles coach Brian Day said, “John Muse was the story today. In the first period we were in the box a lot and he stopped upwards of twenty shots. He allowed us to stay in the game. In the second, we competed better and then carried it through to the third. I felt the flow was curtailed by penalties at the end.”

“Belmont Hill,” Day added, “competed hard and contested every loose puck.”

Note:

Both Belmont Hill and Nobles were missing key players to injury, with Matt McCollem out for the former, and Derrick Pallis for the latter.
