Calling All Blackberries, Treos – and Plain Old Cell Phones
For this year’s quarterfinals, we are going to do what we have done for past two seasons, and post updates at the end of every period of every game, both Div. I and Div. II, both boys and girls.
We’re looking for volunteers to either text or phone in scores at the end of each period and, if possible, include goal scorers. This worked really well last year and, in pretty close to real time, we were able to bring updates to people across the country and around the globe.
If you’re willing to help out, please email cwarner@ushr.com and let us know which game you will be attending. We’ll send you back the info you need.
With your help, we can pull this project off again. It should be fun.

#3 Salisbury Tops # 2 Avon, 4-2
Avon, Conn. -- In one of the most highly anticipated games of the season, #3 Salisbury topped #2 Avon Old Farms, 4-2, before a SRO crowd in Avon’s Fairchild-Jennings Rink.
Salisbury, a team that struggled to find their identity early in the season, looked playoff ready today, outscoring their hosts 3-1 in the first and never letting Avon get closer the rest of the day.
The defending prep champs didn’t start out with a bang, though, as the first three or four minutes of the game were all Avon’s, with the Winged Beavers forwards working the puck deep and often into the Salisbury zone. Avon’s first scoring chance in this early flurry came after a center ice turnover led to a 2-on-1 rush with forward Tom Atkinson and defenseman Jon Higginbotham breaking in on Salisbury’s defenseman Nick Jaskowiak. Jaskowiak, though, held his ground, forcing Atkinson to shoot high. The momentum appeared to turn right there, for afterward it became Salisbury’s game.
On just their third shot of the game, Salisbury’s Matt Masucci, controlling the faceoff to Avon goalie Randy Wolcott’s right, calmly poked the puck under and past the sliding netminder for the 1-0 lead. The goal, an unassisted tally, came just 4:20 into the opening stanza.
Then, just one minute later, Salisbury used their team speed to take advantage of an Avon turnover. Randy Luther, a PG from Edina, Minnesota, took a pass from Adam Pawlick and cut in on Wolcott’s right side. Luther waited for Wolcott to commit himself, then calmy slid the puck under the sprawled goalie’s blocker for the two-goal lead.
Avon came right back when, skating with the man advantage, forward Tom Atkinson controlled a bouncing puck just inside the Salisbury blueline and quickly fed the puck to linemate Chris Wieland, who one-timed a blast over Salisbury goalie Anthony Borelli. Wieland’s goal cut the Salisbury lead to 2-1, and that would be as close as the Winged Beavers would come to evening the score.
Salisbury’s game-winning goal came at the 13:21 mark of the first period while skating with a 5-on-3 advantage. Salisbury, once again using their speed to advantage, controlled the puck beautifully and, in classic left-to-right then right-to-left fashion, moved the puck lower and lower until forward Joe Capuano, a PG from Melrose, Mass., blasted a 15-foot slapshot past Wolcott to restore Salisbury’s two-goal lead. Kevin Quick and Masucci picked up well-deserved assists on the play.
The period ended with the score 3-1 in Salisbury favor. Shots, by our count, were 14-9 for Salisbury.
The second period was scoreless.
In the third, the two teams traded goals. Salisbury scored its fourth of the day at the 12:52 mark when Kevin Quick took a Michael Biega pass and fired it past a partially-screened Wolcott. Avon would score on the power play with just 4:12 left in the third period when Brian Malchoff finished a rush in front of Borelli. Jon Higginbotham assisted.
“This is a tough environment to come into and win,” said Salisbury head coach Dan Donato. “Our guys were ready to play today, and that’s what you have to do when you play a great team like Avon.”
“Not our day,” said Avon head coach John Gardner. “Just not our day.”
Notes:
After Avon’s second goal with just over four minutes remaining in the game, the referee skated over to the scorekeeper and said “I don’t have a clue who scored.” So, after the game, Gardner asked the players who scored the final tally. Brian Malchoff said Jon Higginbotham scored, and Higginbotham said Malchoff scored. So maybe the refs were right on this one.

Belmont Hill Too Much for Nobles
Belmont, Mass. -- With a chance to strengthen their playoff position, Noble & Greenough instead squandered it, getting outworked, outhustled, outshot and soundly beaten, bowing 5-2 to Belmont Hill here today.
Belmont Hill came out strong and got on the board early when the Jack MacNamara – Jason Silvia – Jake Moscatel line applied early pressure. It paid off when MacNamara curled out from behind the net and took a shot that Nobles goalie John Muse made the initial stop on. The rebound came to Silvia who snapped it past Muse to make it 1-0. It was a soft goal, but it came off hard work.
The Silvia line would strike again at the 6:21 mark. This time, Silvia beat the D to the puck in the near corner and made a nice pass out in front to Moscatel who flipped it over Muse and into the top of the cage to give Belmont Hill a 2-0 lead.
It looked like Belmont Hill was going to steamroller Nobles, but then the visitors went on the power play with about five minutes left in the period, cashing in when Andrew Glass came down the right side and, from out by the faceoff circle, took a shot that Josh Franklin either got on a rebound or deflected home at the 13:46 mark.
Just 1:31 later, Nobles struck again as Derek Pallis, from the left point, took a low, hard shot on net that deflected off the stick of Glass and zipped over the glove hand of Belmont Hill goalie Matt Gedman to tie the game at 2-2. It was the last goal Gedman would allow.
With less than two minutes left, Belmont Hill almost went ahead when Muse came out to play the puck, but mishandled it, enabling a Belmont Hill player to take a shot that a Nobles skater had to scoot into the crease to block. By the time Muse scrambled back to the net everyone was tangled up with everyone else; a lot of pushing and shoving ensued. Muse stayed down on the ice for a few minutes, but eventually got to his feet and stayed in the game.
As a result of the scrum, five penalties were called, three on Nobles, two on Belmont Hill.
Just 27 seconds into the ensuing power play, Kevin MacNamara, from the right point, hit Matt McCollem with a pass. McCollem got it to Mark Dube, who fired it past Muse to give Nobles a 3-2 lead with 1:28 left in the period.
The second period was downright placid. Both teams skated hard, and the period was fairly even. Gedman, who had a strong game, came up with a couple of big saves to keep Nobles from tying the game up.
In the third, though, Belmont Hill just poured it on, particularly from about the five minute mark onward, scoring two more goals.
Dube made it 4-2, scoring his second goal of the day at the 8:53 mark, with assists going to Kevin MacNamara and McCollem.
With 2:52 left in the period and Belmont Hill on the power play due to a dubious tripping call against Josh Franklin, a shot wide of Muse was taken off the end boards by Trip Wray, whose attempt to ice the puck was picked off by Silvia, who fired it past a startled Muse.
Shots on goal in the third were Belmont Hill 17, Nobles 4. Shots for the game were Belmont Hill 44, Nobles 25.
“In the first,” said Belmont Hill coach Ken Martin, “the Silvia line played great and got a couple goals off hard work and quick sticks. Then we went to the penalty box. That hurt us. Nobles got momentum and scored twice.”
“In the second, it was just good skating, both ways.”
“In the third, I thought we had a little more jump and shut them down defensively. I was pleased with our overall team defense.”
Nobles coach Brian Day said, “They were just a better hockey team than we were tonight.”
“We were in the game coming in the third period and they just had more energy than we did. They won more loose pucks and carried the play.”

2/10/07 Sat. Feb. 10, 2007 Prep Summaries
-- At Salisbury, Conn., #3 Salisbury topped Loomis-Chaffee, 6-0. Michael Biega (2g,2a) and Brian Gibbons (2g,1a) led the Salisbury scorers. All of Salisbury’s goals came in the first period. With the score 4-0 about eight minutes into the game, Loomis switched goalies, bringing in Matt Irvine, who allowed two goals over the remainder of the period and then shut down Salisbury over the final two periods. In 45 plus minutes, Irvine kicked out 59 of 61 shots and played, according to one eyewitness, “like a magician… pulling off one terrific save after another.” For the game, Salisbury outshot Loomis, 74-11.
-- At Wallingford, Conn., host Choate defeated #6 Westminster, 3-1. Greg Manz had a goal and an assist for the Wild Boars and Scott Barchard stopped 32 of 33 shots for the win. Westminster outshot Choate 33-21. Westminster has lost two in a row and five out of their last seven.

St. Sebastian’s found themselves down 2-0 just 6:25 into the game, meaning they’d allowed 16 unanswered goals to be scored against them during the week. Something clicked -- they woke up and scored three straight goals. One in the first period, by Mike Hoban; one in the second, by Tucker Donohoe; and one early in the third, the game winner, by Chris Brown. Connor Toomey kicked out 31 of 33 for the win; Tabor’s Ryan Carroll turned back 37 of 40 in a losing cause.

-- At Southborough, Mass., host St. Mark’s got goals from three different scorers and defeated #6 Middlesex, 3-2. Nick Saltarelli kicked out 27 of 29 for the win. Power Plays Boost Avon Past Deerfield
Avon, Connecticut – Avon Old Farms, currently ranked #2, topped Deerfield here today 4-1 in front of a packed house at Avon’s Fairchild-Jennings Rink.
The winning tally, which came at the 12:21 mark of the second period, was of the blue collar varieties, with sophomore defenseman Lee Moffie finishing some excellent Avon pressure with a one-timer off a feed from forward Nick Bonino. Deerfield goalie Michael Dizgun, who stood on his head more than once this afternoon, appeared to make the first three saves during this barrage, but couldn’t grab the handle on Moffie’s shot. The goal came during a 4-on-4 situation.
Deerfield, winner of their last seven games but without forward Tommy Herd and defenseman Matt Lovejoy for this afternoon’s tilt, came out skating well in the first period, keeping Avon in their own zone for long stretches at a time. Although Deerfield held both territory and puck-control advantages throughout much of the first period, it was Avon’s speed and transition game that kept the fans on their feet. Deerfield’s Dizgun stoned both Nick Bonino and Patrick Mullane within a minute of each other, both on partial breakaways, to keep the score at 0-0. But luck ran out for the Big Green at the 12:44 mark of the first period when defenseman Brian Malchoff, circling counter-clockwise down the center of the slot, took a pass from Ken Trentowski, made one quick deke, and slid the puck past a sprawled Dizgun to give the Winged Beavers the first goal of the game, a power play goal, and the 1-0 lead.
Deerfield would answer back with a power-play goal of their own just over three minutes into the second period. Matthew Rhone, a PG forward from Dedham, Mass., fed Alexander Killorn from behind the Avon net. Killorn, positioned just inside the left face-off circle, took one step and snapped a bullet to the short side past Avon goalie Randy Wolcott.
Avon added two goals in the third period, by Chris Wieland and Tom Atkinson, to seal the victory.
“We aren’t there yet,” said Avon head coach John Gardner after the game. “We’re competing, and we’re getting better, but we aren’t there yet.”
“Avon is a very good team and I’m proud of our boys and their effort today,” said Brendan Creagh, Deerfield’s head coach. “A bounce here and a bounce there, and it could have been a different game. We’ll bounce back.”

Milton Knots Nobles
Milton, Mass. – #8 Noble & Greenough, coming off a 2-2 tie at St. George’s Thursday, had to settle for another tie today, this time by a 3-3 score at Milton Academy.First off, Milton, which thumped St. Sebastian’s 8-0 Friday, is a vastly improved and more confident team than the edition we saw in December. It’s like night and day. Nobles, on the other hand, seems to be fighting it a bit. The team has been through a lot of disruption due to injuries. Now, most players are back, but there has been a lot of lineup juggling. While they are not firing on all cylinders, they’re still very good, with a dangerous power play.
Milton got on the board first today as sophomore Kyle Mountain drew the puck back to junior defenseman Jeremy Deutsch, stationed at the right point. Deutsch fired it past Nobles goaltender John Muse at the 9:58 mark to give Milton the 1-0 lead.
Nobles tied it up at the 12:42 mark when junior Matt Marshall tried to stuff a wraparound inside the post to the left of Michael Baldino, Milton’s sophomore goalie. Baldino got a piece of it, but the rebound was knocked home by junior Nick Resor to tie the game at 1-1.
Resor scored again less than three minutes later, tipping home a shot from the right point by Trip Wray to put Nobles up 2-1. Andrew Glass also picked up an assist on the play.
In the second period, Milton came out with authority and put some heavy pressure on Nobles right from the start.
It was Nobles, however, that cashed in. With Milton defenseman Walter McCarthy off for interference, Andrew Glass, stationed at the right faceoff circle, was the recipient of a couple nice passes by Wray and Derrick Pallis. Glass fired it past Baldino at the 6:32 mark, giving Nobles a 3-1 lead. However, it was the last goal Nobles would score on the day.
Milton began their comeback with a shorthanded goal, as junior Nolan Descoteux picked off a Derrick Pallis pass and broke in alone on Muse. The Nobles goalie made the initial save but Billy Donahue knocked home the rebound to cut the Nobles lead to 3-2, which is where things stood after two periods.
In the third period, Milton kept up the attack, outshooting Nobles 15-4. The tying goal came at the 9:40 mark and it was pretty identical to the first one, as Mountain again drew the puck back to Deutsch at the right point. Only this time there was no mustard on Deutsch’s shot. It just floated up there, like the Lunesta butterfly, wafting over the glove hand of John Muse, and settling quietly in the back of the net.
In overtime, Glass had a couple nice opportunities for Nobles, and Geoff Mucha and Brandon Nunn had chances for the Mustangs. Nothing doing, though, and the game ended at 3-3.
“We had a slow start coming off last night’s game,” said Milton head coach Paul Cannata. “We were tentative in the first. It took us a little while to find ourselves. We had more energy in the second period – the tempo was good – and that carried through to the third. It was a good game. We’re playing playoff teams and we’re in there battling.”
“I thought in the first part of the game we did a good job keeping it simple, getting pucks on net,” said Nobles coach Brian Day, “but we got away from that as the game progressed. We’ve been trying to be too perfect lately.”
Note:
Milton Academy, just before opening faceoff, plays a snippet from Carmina Burana, the Philadelphia Orchestra version conducted by Eugene Ormandy nearly half a century ago. This is quite refreshing, and a welcome change from the dreck heard in most hockey arenas. How nice would it be if other schools followed suit?

Gedman Pitches Shutout
Belmont, Mass. – Senior goaltender Matt Gedman kicked out 31 shots to lead #5 Belmont Hill to a 6-0 shutout win over St. Sebastian’s here today.Matt McCollem (2g,1a), Jason Silvia (1g,1a), Kevin McNamara (2a), Sam Choate (2a), Jack McNamara (2a), and Dawson Luke (2a) led the Belmont Hill scorers.
Belmont Hill struck hard and fast in this one. At the 1:05 mark of the first period a turnaround wrist shot from the inside hash marks beat St. Sebastian’s goaltender Connor Toomey to put the hosts up 1-0.
At the 3:21 mark Belmont Hill scored a power play goal when Kevin McNamara, at the right point, zipped a diagonal pass onto the stick of Mark Dube, who made it 2-0.
Belmont Hill continued to pour it on, outshooting St. Seb’s, 21-9, on the period.
In the second period, Belmont Hill kept it up, as McCollem tipped home a Dawson Luke shot to make it 3-0. Less than a minute later, Silvia took a pass in front and calmly lifted it over Toomey to make it 4-0. And, a few minutes after that, Sam Choate made it 5-0, knocking home a rebound from the doorstep.
In the third, Matt O’Connell scored early to make it 6-0.
Afterward, Belmont Hill head coach Ken Martin said, “I thought the second period was the best period we played all year. Matt Gedman had a strong game, McCollem, Dube, Silvia all had pretty goals. And all our D played well.”
St. Sebastian’s coach Steve Dagdigian said, “(Belmont Hill) was excellent. They had the jump. They had the speed. They had everything working.”

L’ville’s McKinney Blanks The Hill
Lawrenceville, N.J. - Senior forward Chris Zaires scored two of Lawrenceville’s three goals, including the game winner, and Cody McKinney stopped all 33 shots he faced as Lawrenceville blanked their archrivals 3-0 here this afternoon.
Zaires’ game-winner, at the 5:14 mark of the second period, was an unassisted goal which came on a shot during an apparent Lawrenceville line change. Zaires picked up the loose puck at his own blueline and skated up the left side of the ice, looking to his right for help. Seeing no teammates, he cut to the center and snapped a bullet from just above the slot that appeared to catch Hill goalie Josh Watson by surprise. The even-strength goal, high on the short side, gave Lawrenceville a 1-0 lead, and the Larries never looked back.
Zaires scored again just 1:28 into the 3rd period on an almost identical play, with linemate Paul Lee picking up an assist.
Lawrenceville forward Henry Coxe added the third goal six minutes later to seal the victory for the Big Red.
Watson kicked out 44 of 47 shots for The Hill.
