11:30 am -- St. Andrew's College 8, Proctor Academy 2 -- Brendan Bowie (2g,2a), Matthew McKim (3a), Ian MacLean (2g). Evan McIntyre (1g,1a), Mark Hillier (1g,1a), and Thomas Munro (2a) all had multiple points for St. Andrew's.
1:00 pm -- Winchendon 5, Belmont Hill 2 -- Ryan Black (2g,1a), Ville Rainio (1g,1a), Danny Allen (1g,1a), Cam Gendron (1g,1a), Matt Fawcett (2a) led the way for Winchendon. Grant and Khozozian scored for Bel Hill.
2:30 pm -- St. Andrew's College 6, St. Mark's 0 -- Didn't get to see this one.
Notes:
Belmont Hill: Losing Christian O'Neill (Omaha/Princeton) and Sam Hesler (Wenatchee/Dartmouth), each of whom had 19 goals last season, is a huge loss up front -- and finding that kind of scoring is difficult. Up front, we thought senior center Noah Traylor played with a lot of energy and his linemate junior Mike Holland we noted a bit too. The defense will be a strength, with James Perullo leading the way. John Copeland, a 6'7" right shot, has been converted to D this year, and it will be interesting to see how he progresses during the course of the season. Goaltending, with Connor Hopkins (Yale) and Jack Eselius, is also strength. If the Hillies can find the scoring they could be in the hunt again, but that's a big if.
Proctor: With USHR Prep Player of the Year Reilly Walsh off to Harvard, the Hornets have a vastly different look this season. Also lost to graduation is Matt Slick (Chilliwack) who provided solid defensive cover for Walsh's end-to-end rushes, and leading scorer Tate Singleton (Army). The top returning scorer is senior center Cole Joslin and not far behind him is junior Myles Abbate, a strong skater. Sophomore wing Ronan Walsh, Reilly's younger brother, has a lot of upside, with his size and sense of the game. But he's an '02 and 6'4"; his skating hasn't caught up with this body. Sophomore Aidan Torres will have to take a big role on the blue line.
Winchendon: They've lost three of their top four scorers to graduation: Mike Hardman (Des Moines/Union), Ben Thomas (Sioux Falls/Union), and Johnny Mulera (Junior Bruins/Providence College). But Matt Fawcett, a Quinnipiac recruit, is back and leads the attack. Senior Cam Gendron looks bigger and stronger and will be a player to watch closely. Senior F Danny Allen will have to use his speed to play a bigger role in the offense. The most impressive newcomer we saw on Winchendon is Ryan Black, a '99 PG who played last year at Woodstock Academy (Conn. D-III HS). He's a heady player with a nose for the net. If his skating can improve a little bit, he'll draw college interest. Sophomore Danny Cavanagh, from Bishop Hendricken and the Rhode Island Cavanaghs, is an '02 whose youth and bloodlines alone make him one to keep an eye on. 6'4" PG James Corcoran, from Walpole High, is Winchendon's #1 goalie. Corcoran led Walpole High to the Mass Super 8 last March with a .046 gaa and .970 save %. Winchendon scored a ton of goals last year, but they also gave up too many. Corcoran will be key to Winchendon's fortunes.
St. Mark's: The team only has four seniors, two of whom are goaltenders. They've lost so much from last year. Gone are all those '01s: Sean Farrell (NTDP/Harvard), Henry Thrun (NTDP/Harvard), Colby Bailey (Nobles), Tyler Young (Lawrence). Also gone, via graduation, is Ethan Kimball (Powell River). And injuries? Sophomore D Tucker Hartmann was out today, as was newcomer Matt Toporowski from the Lac St-Louis Lions (Quebec Midget AAA). Coach Carl Corazzini sees the 5'7" Toporowski, who is a high-end NESCAC/lower-end DI player, as his top center. Despite all this, Corazzini says he's excited about watching his young team evolve over the course of the season. '02 defenseman Ian Moore, from the Minuteman Flames, is a newcomer to watch.
St. Andrew's College: They lack the high-enders they had last year. We're talking Cam Hillis (OHL), Corey Andonovski (Chilliwack/Princeton), Morgan Barron (Cornell), and Ryan O'Connell (Pentiction/BU). All gone. But there's depth to this team, and they play with pace. Today, in their 12th and 13th games of the season, they had no problem, topping Proctor and St. Mark's by a combined score of 14-2. Top-line forwards Matthew McKim and Brendan Bowie were standouts. Third line center Mark Hillier, an '02 sophomore from Newfoundland, is a player to watch. On D, we liked left-shot senior Evan McIntyre. Didn't get a strong feel for the goalies. Head coach David Manning did not make the trip, as he and his wife just have a new-born baby at home. St. Andrew's will scrimmage Dexter at 10:15 Sunday morning before heading back to Toronto. They will return for the St. Sebastian's Tournament Dec. 15-17.

A Hockey Memoir
A couple of weeks ago, we received an unsolicited article that wonderfully recalls Princeton Day School's upset win over powerhouse Kent School in the semifinals of the 1969 Flood-Marr Tournament. The two key figures are no longer with us: Kent's Larry Piatelli, who went on to play for Harvard, going to back-to-back NCAA Final Fours in '74 and '75; and Princeton Day School goaltender Christopher Reeve, who would later find fame as an actor -- most notably in the role of "Superman" -- before a 1995 accident in an equestrian event left him a quadriplegic for life. Reeve died in 2004. Piatelli went on to coach at Fenn, Kent, and Governor Dummer. In 2007 he took over as headmaster of the Berkshire School, but, after just a few months in his new position, died at age 51 after suffering a heart attack while playing in an adult rec league hockey game in Albany, NY. Berkshire's Piatelli Hockey Jamboree, which takes place next Monday, is named in his honor.
The author of the piece, which appeared in slightly different form in the Princeton Day School Alumni Magazine, is Bill Schluter, who today is head of the Upper School at the Tatnall School in Wilmington, Delaware.

Farinacci OT Goal Leads Dexter Past Delbarton
Brookline, Mass. -- Dexter, now officially Dexter Southfield, scrimmaged Delbarton here Sunday morning, coming out on top, 3-2, on an OT goal by John Farinacci.
Before getting to the game itself, a few words about the school's newly-renovated rink, which is part of a multi-million dollar project helped significantly by Dexter Southfield parents like Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Baseball, football, and soccer fields have been moved and improved, and a new training facility is being built as well. There's plenty of construction going on in the area. This typist would have done some pre-game poking around, but it was windy and rainy, just the kind of weather to put a Caterpillar forklift in mind to take off in a murderous rage after a trespasser.
The rink itself has been renovated nicely. The benches have been moved to the far side of the ice, and the sheet has been narrowed from its previous incarnation as an Olympic sheet. On what was formerly a standing deck area, four rows of comfortable, individual seats have been installed. Interestingly, most people still stand. At the north end of the rink a heated reception room has been addded. What impressed this viewer was the lighting. It's excellent -- very even, absolutely no glare, easy on the eyes. Photographers and videographers will be happy.
The game itself was a pretty good one for a scrimmage, with Dexter sophomore John McElaney scoring the only goal of the the first period as both teams were feeling each other out.
Things picked up in the second, as Delbarton came out hard. Senior defenseman Jalen Kaplan, trailing the play, drove home a rebound at 1:02 to tie it at 1-1. At 4:48, junior Ryan Siffringer put Delbarton up, 2-1, tucking a rebound glove-side past Dexter Southfield junior goaltender Derek Mullahy, one the Harvard recruit would love to have back. The second was Delbarton's strongest period, by a wide margin.
In the third, Dexter came out hard. In the first minute of play, senior center Jack Nisbet, whose game has improved, was foiled by Delbarton senior goalie Kenny Burgess. But, about 30 seconds later, Nisbet tied the game at 2-2 with a top-shelf, close-range wrister. Dexter had several more good chances. Sophomore RD John Fusco hit a crossbar midway through the period. Senior D Jack Rathbone had a great opportunity with about four minues left. Farinacci set up Ian Murphy for a scoring chance. But they couldn't find the range and that go-ahead goal remained elusive.
With 3:07 left in the third, Dexter defenseman Ben Meehan was assessed a major/game misconduct for a hit from behind, which left his team down a man for the remainder of regulation and, should they survive that, the first couple minutes of OT.
Dexter did survive the third and, in OT, didn't even wait for the penalty to expire, as Farinacci, who had an unusually quiet game to that point, got the puck from Rathbone and, from the edge of the crease, poked it five-hole for a short-handed goal just 49 seconds into the period. (Farinacci, it's worth noting, played for Delbarton as a freshman two years ago before transferring to Shattuck-St.Mary's, where he played on the U16 team last season.)
The Delbarton players who caught our eye were 6'0" sophomore RD Bayard Hall, an '02; and sophomore center Brendan Clark, also an '02. Both look like Div. I prospects. Two seniors we liked were defenseman Jalen Kaplan and Hunter Macy. Both will play college hockey, though more likely at the DIII level. Delbarton has a freshman goalie, Brett Cleaves, an '03 who is highly regarded by evaluators in the Atlantic District.
Delbarton, which lost a scrimmage to Berkshire yesterday, will be back in Boston on Dec. 16th and 17th, playing BC High and then Malden Catholic.
Delbarton will have a hard time scoring goals this season, as last year's two top sophomores, Jack Malone, a Cornell recruit, is now in the USHL with Youngstown; and Danny Colon is at Exeter. In addition, four-year goaltender Troy Kobryn has graduated and is now with the Connecticut Jr. Rangers.
Dexter is fast and skilled, and though they lost Matt Boldy to the NTDP, and seniors John Femia (St. A's) and Sean Keohan (Junior Bruins) to graduation, the addition of the two Shattuck kids -- Mullahy and Farinacci -- will keep them in the hunt again this season.
Notes:
Dexter sophomore F Chase McInnis broke his hand a few weeks ago, and isn't quite ready yet. When he does return, and barring any other injuries, Dexter's top three lines will look like this:
McInnis-Farinacci-Murphy
Nisbet-Aidan Connolly-Nolan Donato
AJ Caprio-Ben Raymond-John McElaney
Mark Fusco's youngest son and John Fusco's younger brother, Matt, an '03, is in the 8th grade at Dexter and got some shifts. Didn't look out of place, either.

Jacobs Returns, Penguins Win
Ashburnham, Mass. -- In 2007, with 500-plus wins over a 22-year coaching career at Cushing under his belt, Steve Jacobs retired from the position. Today, after a ten-year absence, he returned to his familiar spot behind the Penguins bench, and his players made it memorable, as senior forward Vilho Saariluoma scored a hat trick to lead the Penguins to a 4-1 win over Kents Hill.
"It felt like I never left," said Jacobs. "Today was great fun. I'm excited for the season."
As for the game, Jacobs said, "I like our team, but I thought we were sloppy today. Kents Hill is a hard-nosed team. I did like the way we came out in the third, though."
Kents Hill coach Doug Friedman said, "They outworked us. We couldn't match their intensity."
To these eyes, this was a typical early-season game. A lot of passes didn't click and both teams found it hard to sustain pressure in 5x5 play. As a matter of fact, only one of the game's five goals, the final one, came in 5x5 play. Most goals were off rebounds or scrums in front.
Cushing is a young team this year, with only six seniors. Two of them, Saariluoma and 6'3" RD Nolan McElhaney, have taken a step forward in their play. We also felt that junior Cam Recchi has improved his game significantly -- he's quicker and stronger.
Other seniors, like LD Cam Berube and RC Matt Guerra, were their usual solid selves. Newcomers, like freshman RD Cody Sealey, sophomore RD Brendan O'Donnell, sophomore wings Jake Hewitt and Shane Zarcone -- and others -- will bear watching. Cushing struggled scoring goals last season, averaging 2.78 gpg. That figure should go up.
Cushing's #1 goalie, sophomore Joey Sharib, did not play today, as he is under a short suspension from the school. He'll be back between the pipes for Cushing's next game (vs. Dexter; Wed. Nov. 29th). In his absence, sophomore Max Caouette took over in net, and was fine, kicking out 11 of 12 shots.
Kents Hill's #1 goalie, Jaxon Friedman, didn't play either. Having faced a lot of rubber -- 46 shots -- in last night's loss at Exeter, Friedman gave way to fellow senior Danny Santiano, who kicked out 32 of 36 shots.
Kents Hill's newcomers -- such as PG forwards Jay Gallagher (Reading HS), Jack Grady (Hingham HS), and Joey O'Leary (Catholic Memorial) -- should give the team an offensive boost once they adjust to the faster pace of play.
Kents Hill starts the season with seven straight road games -- eight if you include Tuesday's scrimmage at NYA.

Exeter Hockey Carries on in Post-Dennehy Era
Exeter faced off at home tonight against Kents Hill in the season opener for both teams, a 5-1 decision for Exeter.
Missing, after 46 years behind the Exeter bench, was Bill Dennehy.
Yes, Dennehy, 69, officially retired four years ago, but he stayed on as assistant hockey coach, with every year being "maybe the last." Finally, Bill and his wife Cyndee, a retired teacher, sold their home in Exeter, moving permanently to their longtime summer home in East Chop on Martha's Vineyard, where they'll get to spend more time with their two children and seven grandchildren. But Dennehy's retirement means the end of The Hockey Bar, where, after games, an informal group of hockey people would get together in Dennehy's basement, fitted out with a real bar, TV, and a postgame spread courtesy of Cyndee. The basement's walls were covered with photos that could hold the attention of a sports fan for hours. But the conversation was usually so lively that many, like this typist, would usually get pulled away.
Dennehy started coaching at Exeter shortly after graduating from Springfield College, which he had helped lead to the Div. II College World Series crown. As for hockey, he started with the JV hockey team at Exeter in 1971-72, then became an assistant to George Crowe with the varsity. When Crowe replaced Grant Standbrook as head coach at Dartmouth in the fall of 1975, Dennehy became head coach at Exeter, staying in that position until 1992 when he reversed roles by handing off the position to Dana Barbin, then his assistant. Dennehy continued as Barbin's assistant for 25 years. And in that quarter century, Barbin himself became one of the longest-tenured coaches in prep hockey.
"I've never coached without him," Barbin said. "Twenty-five years. His not being here is going to be strange for me. The greatest thing is I always knew I had Bill's trust and loyalty. He had my back."
In addition to hockey, Dennehy was the head coach of Exeter's boys' soccer and baseball team for years, and is probably best known for baseball, though that might depend on who you were talking to. "He always said," Barbin added, "that he had the best job in North America, being able to coach all three sports, and phys ed, too."
As a coach he was old school -- firm and tough, but in an approachable, avuncular manner. The kids will miss him. We all will. And in case you're wondering, the tradition of the Hockey Bar will continue, just in a new venue.
Dennehy's legacy is carried on by his son, Pat, currently the head hockey coach at Choate.

Keep 'Em Coming!
Coaches have been uploading 2017-18 schedules for the past couple of weeks and, to date, we have roughly half of all those we need. If you are looking for a schedule for any of the schools listed below, you're in luck. But, as mentioned, we're only halfway there. We're going to start creating our composite schedules in a few days and don't want any schools left out.
Thank you to all coaches.
Here are the NEPSIHA teams we have so far:
Albany Academy, Andover, Avon Old Farms, BB&N, Berkshire, Berwick, Brewster Academy, Brunswick, Exeter, Groton, Hebron, Holderness, Kent, Kents Hill, Kimball Union, Millbrook, Noble & Greenough, North Yarmouth Academy, Northfield-Mt. Hermon, Pomfret, Proctor, Rivers, Salisbury, St. Mark's, St. Paul's, St. Sebastian's, Tabor, Tilton, Trinity-Pawling, and Westminster.
Non-NEPSIHA teams we have:
Académie Saint-Louis, Austin Prep, Gilmour Academy, Hill School, Portledge, Rice Memorial, St. John's Prep, The Hun School, and Wyoming Seminary.
Note: We don't want anyone hunting for a schedule that isn't there, so we will update the above list as additional schedules are posted.
Updates: The two most recent schedules to be uploaded are Proctor and Trinity-Pawling.

Welcome to 2017-18!
The 2017-18 Prep Pages are now officially open.
All of last season’s news, rosters, schedules, and stats have been archived, and new material will start going into this season’s pages immediately, as coaches begin to upload their teams' schedules.
We want to remind new readers of a couple of new features we introduced last season. Players’ career prep statistics, for one. If you click on a player’s name on the roster you will see his final stats for all the seasons he has played prep hockey and, of course, running totals for the current season. If you click on the year, say 2015-16, it will show a player's game-by-game statistics.
It is also possible to download rosters, schedules, and all statistics pages in PDF form, which has the added benefit of giving pages a cleaner look when printed out.
Pretty much all columns are sortable. Just click on the top. This is useful for, among other things, separating scoring and goaltending leaders by school, birth year, position, points, etc.
We’ve also done a lot of work on the back end, mainly behind-the-scenes stuff that you probably won’t notice beyond the fact that the site will be running more smoothly than ever.
Once we have a reasonable number of schedules posted, we will begin to keep you updated on which of them are actually up, so you won’t have to waste your time looking for those that have yet to be uploaded.
We will also be posting jamboree and holiday tournament schedules. Look for those to start going up over the coming week as well. Note to coaches: send 'em along, please.
We are also accepting advertising for the upcoming season. Please write ads(at)ushr.com for rates.
Of course, we will have the news coverage you have come to expect.
Welcome to the new season. We're glad to be here. We’re glad you’re here. And, as always, we thank you for your support.
