48 Former Prep Players in NHL

Tomorrow, the NHL holiday roster freeze, which runs from Dec. 19-27, is over. We took the opportunity Christmas break afforded to do some fun things, like see exactly who from the prep ranks made an NHL appearance -- even if for just a game or two -- in the first half of this season. We just went through all 31 NHL rosters and relied on our memory. If we missed anyone, be sure to let us know and we will update accordingly.

There are 48 former prep players who have suited up for one or more NHL games this season. Twelve of those players were first round NHL draft picks. Ten were undrafted, which says more about the prep/college path than anything else.

If you've wondering why the NHL teams below are arranged the way they are, it's simple, we just went through the league by the current standings, going east to west by division. Another way we kept things simple is by limiting the list to NEPSIHA schools and NEPSIHA affiliates.

If a player's school and date are in parentheses, that indicates the player left prep school at that time, generally for the NTDP, USHL, Major Junior, etc.

A Tie at the Top, but...

Kimball Union and Salisbury finished in a flat-footed tie in this week's USHR Prep Poll. But there has to be a #1, simply because the template upon which the poll is entered has no truck with ambiguity. Check out the winner and the highly scientific manner through which we arrived at a tie-breaker.

This poll arrives a little later than most weeks' polls, primarily because of the huge volume of games over the weekend. In addition, we wanted to factor in Tuesday afternoon's Exeter-Thayer game -- the last prep game before Christmas -- before putting out the poll.

USHR Prep Poll, Jan. 20, 2017

Exeter Thumps Thayer, 7-2

Boston, Mass. -- Exeter scored on its first two shots of the game, and for host Thayer it never got much better, as the visitors played a hard, determined game and bussed out of Warrior Arena with a 7-2 beatdown.

"They weren't ready to play," Thayer coach Tony Amonte said of his team afterward. "And if you aren't ready to play you'll get beat in this league. They beat us in every facet of the game. There was nothing we could do to change it. They wanted it more. They had the right game plan and they ran us right out of the building."

"We have some soul searching to do," Amonte added.

It really was that bad. Thayer had senior center Jay O'Brien, back from a stint with the NTDP, in the lineup, and, though he did score a third period goal it was too little too late. Earlier, senior Tristan Amonte scored, coming down the left side and crashing the net. But that was it for Thayer.

Exeter, and in particular the first line of junior Garrett Foster (2g,1a), senior center Kyle Jadatz (1a) and senior Bobby Murray (2g), was outstanding.

"It was a hell of a team effort from all four lines and all three sets of D," said coach Dana Barbin. "It starts with our senior captains. Kyle Jadatz blocked 12 shots today. For my money he was the best player on the ice tonight. He was given a challenge to keep a terrific hockey player (O'Brien) in check -- and he did just that. So often today, kids are all about goals and assists. Kyle Jadatz doesn't care about that. He cares about winning. He and Tommy Cavanagh are the two best defensive forwards I've ever had."

Jadatz's wings, Murray and Foster, were hard to miss. With their long hair flowing out from under their helmets, they have that '70s look down. It's Slapshot for a new millenium.

"Murray was a force today. He's strong as a bull. To me, he's a full scholarship kid. Foster is getting better every day. You can't work harder than those guys."

Murray, on a nice pass from Foster, teamed up for Exeter's first goal just 45 seconds into the game, capitalizing on a Thayer turnover. Thayer's defense also broke down on the next goal, which came just a minute later, as Andrew Seaman put Exeter up 2-0 at the 1:46 mark. Thayer looked shell-shocked. Exeter went up 3-0 on a Foster PPG at 4:51. Exeter outshot Thayer, 16-7, in the period.

Thayer senior starting goalie Jimmy Scannell was yanked after the first period, replaced by sophomore Gavin Fitzpatrick.

In the second, Exeter went up 4-0 as Foster had a penalty shot and drove it 5-hole.

Tristin Amonte's PPG at 15:08 cut it to 4-1, but Exeter answered 24 seconds later as Ted Aiken was given a ton of space short side and didn't miss.

Early in the third, it was desperation time for Thayer. Just one minute into the period, Thayer went on the PP and coach Amonte pulled his goalie. It didn't work, though at 7:53 Jay O'Brien found himself alone in the slot and ripped one home. Exeter's Michael Pitts and Bobby Murray (ENG) scored the final two goals for the 7-2 margin of victory.

Exeter outshot Thayer, 36-24. Exeter sophomore goalie Ryan Welch kicked out 26 of 28 shots for the win.

Salisbury #1 in First USHR Prep Poll of the Season

Salisbury (4-0-0) takes the top position in the first USHR Weekly Prep Poll of the 2017-18 season. Due to Saturday's snow, the sample size is smaller than we would like, but after this week's tournament games that will change significantly. You  can count on it. Just to use last year as an example, five teams that were in the first poll were tossed to the curb by the second poll, all victims of the crucible of prep tournaments. That said, those teams at the top of the first poll remained at the top. And the team that was #1 in the first poll, Kimball Union, wound up winning the whole thing. There is no such thing as the USHR curse. That strictly belongs to Sports Illustrated.

USHR Prep Poll, Week of Dec. 11, 2017

Sat. Dec. 9 Highlights

* T-P Edges Avon in OT
* Seb's Trounces Exeter
* Harris Saves the Day for KUA
* Regan's 46 Saves Lead VA

@ Trinity-Pawling 2, Avon Old Farms 1 (OT) -- Jackson Breton scored at 2:28 of OT to keep T-P (3-0-0) undefeated. After a scoreless first period, junior Joey Musa put T-P up 1-0 in the second. Senior Matt Kirwan tied it up for Avon in the third, setting up OT and Breton's GWG, from Scot Lawson and John Garvey. T-P junior G Evan Ruschil, who has allowed just 4 goals over 3 games, kicked out 30 of 31. Avon junior Alex Aslanidis (21/23) took the hard-luck loss.

Stanstead College 4 @ New Hampton 2 -- Stanstead got two third period goals from junior Andrew Amousse, the latter an empty-netter, to take a 4-2 decision. Junior Greg Lapoint had two assists. In net, sophomore Fabio Iacobo (18/20) picked up the win. New Hampton senior Matt Sayles kicked out 26 of 29 in a losing cause.

@ St. Sebastian's 6, Exeter 0 -- Behind first period goals from sophomore Liam Connors and junior Liam Gorman, the Arrows jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and never looked back, adding goals from Colin Kehoe, D Jayden Struble, Gorman (his second), and Tommy Lyons. Sophomore G Drew Commesso (26 saves) earned the shutout. The BU recruit has a 1.53 GAA and a .942 save percentage thus far. The loss was the first of the season for Exeter, now 5-1-1.

KUA 5 @ Tilton 4 -- A Jordan Harris goal with 10 seconds left in regulation allowed the Wildcats to sneak out of Tilton with a 5-4 win. KUA had a 4-2 lead with six minutes left in the third, but gave it away, as Tilton's Cameron Weitzman and John Pigott (his second of the game) scored 1:17 apart to tie it up at 4-4. KUA outshot Tilton 38-22.

Senior F Michael Outzen added an insurance goal midway through the third. Soph Max Caouette (20/22) picked up the win for the Penguins. Hill 6'2" senior G Dalton Jerzak (44/48) was the hard-luck loser.

Vermont Academy 4 @ Holderness 2 -- Holderness outshot Vermont 48-34, but Vermont junior G Dylan Regan came up big, kicking out 46 of 48 shots to lead his team, now 4-0-0, to victory. VA got third period goals from juniors Hunter Krasnow and Nick Rashkovsky-- both PPGs -- to break a 2-2 tie. Senior Calvin Moise (2g,1a) led Vermont Academy scorers.

Snow Story

We haven't yet analyzed the weather reports for tomorrow, but it's clear that snow is coming, so get those snow chains on if you haven't done so already.

And coaches, please send us a text or email with any cancellations/postponements/makeup dates. Send to cwarner (at) ushr.com and we'll keep a running list on this page. We are doing the same with the girls section.

Will this storm be as bad as the December 2003 nor'easter, which wiped out almost the entire slate of games on Sat. December 6th, and piled up nearly three feet of snow in some areas?

The only game that was played that day was Holderness at Exeter, as the snow wasn't as fierce in New Hampshire as in Southern New England. So Holderness played Exeter, and beat them on a flukey OT goal, as the Exeter d-man trying to clear the puck away from his net didn't get good wood and batted it right past his own goalie, and into the net.

Holderness, which had a Sunday game scheduled at Deerfield, stayed in Exeter for the night. Sunday morning, Holderness head coach Pat Dennehy packed up his charges for the trip to Western Mass. They got on 495 south but the roads were so bad they got off at the Route 93 intersection, and headed back to the Live Free or Die state. They only got as far as Concord, NH, where they found shelter at a motel near the Route 89 and 93 intersection.

On Monday morning, they continued back to school.

Cushing 2 @ Williston-Northampton 1 -- Cushing's goals, from D Brad Zona and F Matt Guerra, both came in the third period, a minute and half apart. Williston PG F Logan Geisness added a SHG later to keep it close. Sophomore G Joe Sharib kicked out 20 of 21 for the win.

@ Middlesex 3, Brooks 2 -- Middlesex got goals from three different scorers and junior Joe Stanizzi (32/34) earned the win in net. For Brooks, junior D Owen Borek (1g,1a) figured in both of his team's goals.

@ Belmont Hill 6, Governor's 2 -- Belmont Hill, shut out in its first two games, busted out today. Sophomore F Luke Khozozian (2g), junior D James Perullo (1g,2a), and senior D John Copeland (1g,2a) led the attack. Junior G Connor Hopkins (32/34) earned the win.

Exeter 2 @ Dexter 2 -- Senior captain Jack Nisbet scored two goals in the third period -- the second coming with 20 seconds left and the extra attacker on -- to lift host Dexter to a 2-2 tie. Neither team was able to score for the first two periods. Dexter junior G Derek Mullahy (35/37) and Exeter soph Ryan Welch (28/30) were standouts.

Hill 2 @ Lawrenceville 1 -- Junior Ryan Long won it for the Hill at 1:24 of  OT. Goalies were big in this game. Hill 6'2" senior Dalton Jerzak (22/23) earned the win, while L'ville senior Karl Szabo (31/33) was the hard-luck loser.

@ Kimball Union 7, Proctor 4 -- The Hornets tied up host KUA, 4-4, on Cole Joslin's second goal of the day early in the third, but KUA answered with three unanswered goals -- from Sullivan Mack, Tomas Mazura and LOgan Cash -- over an eight-minute span to get the win.

@ Milton 5, Lawrence Academy 2 -- Milton came out strong and beat LA junior goaltender Ian Graiff for four first period goals -- two from Quinton Fox -- before Lawrence got a goal late in the frame. In the second, the Spartans pulled it together and had a strong second period that included a Jack Cameron shot from the left point that cut the Mustangs lead to 4-2. Freshman Matt Beniers, a late '02, scored the final goal for Milton. If you haven't seen him yet, Beniers is exceptionally talented with hockey smarts galore. Check him out at the Flood-Marr.

Nobles Spanks Belmont Hill, 6-0

Belmont, Mass. -- The line of seniors Sean Wrenn (2g,3a) and Jerry Harding (1g,3a) and junior Ryan Stevens (1g,2a) led the offense, and senior goaltender Matt Lane posted a 24-save shutout to lead Nobles to a 6-0 road win at Belmont Hill this afternoon.

For Belmont Hill, penalties and a popgun offense sunk them. They are now 0-2 on the season, and have yet to score a goal (they lost 2-0 to Berwick in Wednesday's opener). Nobles bounced back from a 3-1 opening loss to Pomfret Wednesday.

Today, Nobles got first-period goals from Stevens and Wrenn and carried a 2-0 lead into the second. Although Nobles had carried the play up to that point, Bel Hill still had 40 minutes to get back into the game. But a turning point came when Nobles sophomore D Will Moore was run from behind along the half-wall in his end by Belmont Hill forward Max Fields. While everyone was watching Moore struggle to his feet (he returned to the game several minutes later), the Nobles forwards took off up ice, beating Belmont Hill junior goalie Connor Hopkins to make it 3-0 at the 3:40 mark. Fields was assessed a major and a game misconduct. On the ensuing five-minute PP, Nobles added two more to make it 5-0.

Midway through the period, Belmont Hill head coach Jeremiah McCarthy called a time out, and replaced Hopkins with senior Jack Eselius, who was excellent the rest of the way, stopping Ryan Stevens on a penalty shot and allowing only a point-blank 5x3 top corner snipe from Jerry Harding with 46 seconds left in the period to make it 6-0.

The third period was scoreless.

Nobles head coach Brian Day was pleased with his team's work. "I liked the commitment and the passion we brought. We moved our feet better and were more creative than we were on Wednesday. We tried to go out and set the pace as opposed to reacting to it. We had some power play opportunities that we took advantage of. I also felt that when (Belmont Hill) had the puck our structure was much improved."

"Just overall, it was a nice win for us against a quality team," Day added. "Hats off to our guys. They worked. They were committed. It was just a nice team effort."

Belmont Hill coach Jeremiah did not love what he saw. "We took penalties and they are excellent on special teams," he said, adding, "Nobles won all the individual battles."

Tilton 1 @ St. Paul's 0 -- A goal by junior Cam Ryan, with an assist from sophomore D Joe Bouchard at 11:04 of the second period was all the offense the Rams needed today. PG goaltender Sean Keegans posted a 21-save shutout for the win, while St. Paul's junior Andy Beran (25/26) was the hard-luck loser.

@ Brooks 3, BB&N 2 -- Brooks senior Gavin McCann broke a 2-2 tie at 15:55 of the third to lift his team to a 3-2 win over BB&N. Brooks outshot BB&N, 32-18.

Junior G Evan Ruschil (32/34) earned the win for T-P.

NMH 3 @ St. George's 1 -- NMH got all three of its goals -- from Devan Tongue, Jack Quinn, and Mike Kennedy -- within a span of 5:31 in the second period. Senior G Eric Green (26/27) earned the win; St. George's junior Gianni Rodriguez (39/42) was the hard-luck loser.

@ Deerfield 3, Groton 1 -- Deerfield got goals from Tomas Zourikan, Michael Holland, and Cameron Snow. Tyler Forbes scored for Groton. Deerfield junior G Thomas Gale (26/27) appears to have picked up where he left off last season.

Exeter 2, Gunnery 1 (Exeter Invitational) -- Senior Albert Washco put Gunnery up 1-0 midway through the first, but Exeter PG Ted Aiken evened it up with a PPG in the second. Senior Bobby Murray, from Kyle Jadatz, won it for Exeter in the third. Exeter sophomore G Ryan Welch (25/26) got the win; Gunnery senior Nicholas Vankka (26/28) took a tough loss.

@ Millbrook 8, Lawrenceville 0 -- Greg Koutsomitis (2g,1a), Dan Dimon (1g,2a), and Jake Gagnon (1g,2a) each had three points and senior Greg Brassard posted a 23-save shutout.

Pomfret 5, Andover 3 (Tabor Invitational) -- Andover fought back from a 3-1 second period deficit to tie it up at 3-3 on a Thomas Manty goal early in the third. But Pomfret soph Tyler Bourque put his team back up with a PPG at 5:22. With 24 seconds left in regulation, Bourque added an ENG. Junior G Peyton Durand (32/35) and his teammates improve to 2-0, as Pomfret topped Nobles on Wednesday.

Kent 6, Hebron 4 (Exeter Invitational) -- Senior Jeremy Routh broke a 3-3 tie, putting Kent up, 4-3, late in the third. But a couple of minutes later, Hebron senior Johann Bayrou made it 4-4. Then, with 2:58 to go, Kent senior forward Adam Usinger scored what would become the game-winner. Kent sophomore Aidan Cobb added an ENG in the final minute. Kent outshot Hebron, 30-27.

Berkshire 2 @ Taft 1 (OT) -- Berkshire junior D Aidan Metcalfe scored at 2:50 of overtime to lift his team to a 2-1 road win. Senior D Mark Driscoll picked up an assist on the game-winner. After Berkshire soph Briggs Gammill and Taft soph Jakub Tepley (ppg) each scored in the first couple of minutes of the game, over 54 scoreless minutes elapsed before Berkshire prevailed.

Roxbury Latin 7 @ Portsmouth Abbey 2 -- Junior F Aidan Lovett had two goals and Joey Ryan, Jimmy Duffy, Bobby Luca, and Zach Milton each had three points for Roxbury Latin. Sophomore Will Crowley had both of Portsmouth Abbey's goals.

Manty's Pair Leads Andover over Choate

Andover, Mass.
-- Junior Thomas Manty got Andover started with a goal early in the first period, then added the game-winner with 21 seconds left in the second to lead host Andover past Choate, 5-2, before a high-spirited Friday night crowd here.

Junior Christian Powers also had two goals, the second of which was an empty-netter. Seniors Kevin Ouellette (1g,1a), Quinn Doyle (2a), and D Christian Kukas (2a) also each had two points.

Sophomore goalie Charlie Archer kicked out 35 of 37 shots.

In the first period, Andover came out flying, showing team speed and putting Choate back on their heels. After Andover's Manty scored, Choate pulled themselves together, with sophomore John Russo knocking home the rebound of a Cooper Swift shot for a power play goal late in the period to make it 1-1.

Andover had a strong second period but didn't get on the board until the final minute. Manty's game-winning goal came when he batted a waist-high puck past Choate senior goalie Cal Stewart, who would kick out 34 of the 39 shots he faced.

In the third, Powers and Ouellette scored a pair of goals to put Andover up, 4-1, both set up by Doyle, driving the net on the first goal, and carrying the puck into the zone and making a perfect pass on the second.

Choate senior forward Chance Gorman cut it to 4-2 off a nice pass from Jack Hoey. That, however, was as close as the Wild Boars would get, as Andover's Powers added an empty-netter in the final minute.

"I thought we showed poise and versatility, with guys playing different positions in different combinations," said Andover head coach Paul Tortorella. "I was happy with our breakout. And our goaltending was exceptional, with breakaways being stopped at key moments. Charlie (Archer) deserves major credit."

Choate head coach Patrick Dennehy bemoaned a couple of defensive mistakes that wound up in the back of the net but added that he was proud of his team's effort.

"Andover is a really good team," Dennehy said. "Hats off to them. As for us, we have a lot of new players, and we had flashes. Our powerplay was OK. But we have to be patient, and we can't make mistakes."

Our three stars of the game were 1) Thomas Manty 2) Charlie Archer 3) Quinn Doyle.

Salisbury's McGrath Blanks Taft in Opener

Watertown, Conn. -- In opening day action for both teams, Salisbury, behind a shutout from former Roxbury Latin goaltender Bryan McGrath, blanked host Taft, 4-0.

The game marked the coaching debut of Taft's Ryan Shannon, an '01 alum who went on to play four years at Boston College before going on to a lengthy pro career that included a Stanley Cup Championship with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. Shannon takes the place of Dan Murphy, who, after 13 years behind the Rhinos' bench, has moved on to coach St. Paul's.

It's early, but both teams look better than last season. Salisbury may have lost underclassmen Tyce Thompson (Dubuque -- USHL) and Johnny Beecher (NTDP), but all their returnees are a year older, they have a deeper squad up front, on defense, and in goal. Plus they have scoring spread over four lines. They will be contending for another title.

Taft is led up front by 6'0" senior center and co-captain Jordan Tonelli, a Brown recruit who looks faster and stronger, and on D by new sophomore Christian Jimenez, a Harvard recruit from the Westchester Selects, and Billy Dobensky, a junior co-captain.

Salisbury got its first goal of the season at 10:21 of the first when new soph Arsenii Smekhov, a UConn recruit from Russia, found senior center and co-captain Jacques Bouquot alone in the slot. Bouquot misfired on his first shot, but on his second beat Taft senior goalie Caleb Hannon. Bouquot, a BC recruit, looks quicker and more consistent than last year.

In the second, the game heated up a bit. Taft plays hard and with an edge, but the Knights aren't easily pushed around. The game was, in the larger sense, a clean one, but also a little chippy. When Taft was bearing down in the second, they had Salisbury back on their heels a bit. Playing at home and down only 1-0, the Rhinos were very much in the game -- especially if they could tie it up.

But they couldn't.

Salisbury's fourth line scored the backbreaker when sophomore wing Michael Fairfax, a Mercer Chiefs product, picked up the puck along the right wall near the outer hash marks and fired a long pass to senior center Nick Lachaine, stationed back door. Lachaine redirected it past Taft's Hannon to make it 2-0.

In the third, Salisbury senior center Brett Willits took advantage of a Taft turnover and broke in alone on Hannon, cleanly beating him to make it 3-0 with 3:03 left. .

Salisbury's Kevin Wall made it 4-0 with an empty net goal with 1:02 left.

"It was an entertaining game," said Salisbury head coach Andrew Will. "Two talented hard-working teams. Guys were making plays. Both goalies made some big saves. Both teams played hard and with an edge."

"There were some jitters in the first period, and in the second Taft came out flying. Bryan (McGrath) made a couple of nice saves. Michael (Fairfax) making the pass to Nick (Lachaine) for the second goal settled us down a bit. We were being too cute, forcing plays, and not keeping the game simple enough."

As for Taft, Shannon said of his charges, "We have a team that loves to compete for one another. That's a great starting point."

"You have to tip your hat to Salisbury. The outcome wasn't what we were looking for, but there are silver linings. The young players thrown into the fire handled themselves well. Our senior leadership is fantastic. Our goaltending was strong. We just couldn't solve their goalie.."
