Nichols Edges Belmont Hill in OT to Take Title

Buffalo, NY -- Nichols defeated Belmont Hill, 3-3 in OT, to win the 2002 Nichols New Year's Tournament tonight. The winning goal came just 1:31 into the extra period when senior defenseman Matt McCarthy took a pass from Matt Connors and put it by Belmont Hill goaltender Joe Butler.

The two teams had gone into the third period 0-0. However, John Murphy and Ray Ortiz scored for Belmont Hill, and Chris Mueller and Connors scored for Nichols.

In the thrid-place game, Millbrook beat Lake Shore Catholic, 6-0, as senior Jason Beliveau scored two goals and added an assist.

Taft Takes L'Ville Tournament

Lawrenceville, NJ -- Taft defeated Canterbury 2-0 Sunday afternoon for its fourth Lawrenceville title in as many years. The deciding factor in the somewhat lackluster final was Taft junior forward Todd Johnson who came down the left wing boards and lifted a wrist shot over Canterbury goalie Ben Grandjean's glove and into the upper left corner at 8:08 of the first period. Although the game featured some good hits, both teams looked tired and some of the best scoring opportunities for both teams came off of defensive mistakes. Junior center Alex Meintel clinched the win for Taft on an empty net goal with 40 seconds remaining.

Deerfield Wins Flood-Marr Title #8 for Lindsay

Dedham, Mass. -- After learning that 15-year head coach Jim Lindsay would be stepping down at the end of the season and handing the reins of the team over to assistant Brendan Creagh, the Big Green came out hard in the first half and scored the only two goals they would need en route to a 2-1 win over Hotchkiss in the championship game of the 38th annual Flood-Marr Tournament today.

Deerfield got on the board early when senior LW Brian Ciborowski beat a Hotchkiss D at the blue line and broke in alone on Hotchkiss goaltender Zane Kalemba. However, Kalemba came out to challenge Ciborowki, who calmly stepped around him and slid the puck into the net at the 2:28 mark.

It was the only mistake Kalemba would make all day, but it wasn't the only time Kalemba would be beaten. Midway through the half, Big Green senior Dan Travis took a long outlet pass from junior RD Paul Baier and broke in alone on Kalemba. This time Kalemba stayed back, and stopped Travis on the initial shot. However, senior center Dan Shribman, the trailer on the play, was charging hard and cashed in the rebound for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.

Deerfield dominated the first half. Kalemba, though, along with some help from his defensemen, was able to keep the game close.

Late in the second half, Hotchkiss made things interesting when junior RW Joe Gardner, following the play, poked the puck home out of a pileup in front of Deerfield goaltender Dan Smith with 2:29 left in regulation.

That was as close as Hotchkiss would get. Kalemba was pulled as the clock wound down, but Hotchkiss couldn't get the equalizer and Deerfield skated off with their fifth Flood-Marr title in the last six years, and the eighth of the Lindsay era.

In the third-place game, Andover, behind a strong team effort and the goaltending of junior Cory Schneider, edged Nobles, 2-1.

St. Paul's Wins Avon -- Again

Avon, Conn. -- St. Paul's School, on the strength of three power play goals, won the Avon Old Farms Christmas Classic today, knocking off Berkshire, 3-1. This is the second straight year in which St. Paul's has won the Avon Tournament, and the second time in tournament history that a team other than Avon has won the tournament in consecutive years (Tabor did it in '92 and '93).

St. Paul's defenseman Bill LeClerc, a Yale recruit, was named the tournament's MVP.

Culver Takes Lawrence-Groton Tournament

Groton, Mass. -- Culver Military Academy, by beating Cushing Academy 4-1 today, won this year's Lawrence-Groton Tournament. In today's other game, the New England Jr. Coyotes topped Lawrence Academy, 5-3.

On Friday, Culver beat Lawrence, 3-2; and the New England Jr. Coyotes, 3-1.

In Friday's other games, Cushing beat the New England Jr. Coyotes, 5-2; and Lawrence Academy beat Cushing, 4-3.

Culver senior defenseman Tom Zabkowicz was named Div. I MVP.

The Div. II bracket was won by the Groton School, which topped North Yarmouth Academy, 4-3, today.

On Friday, Grton topped Berwick Academy, 4-1; and Worcester Academy, 3-1.

Groton junior forward Chip Sherwood was named Div. II MVP.

Cushing Comeback Against Lawrence Falls Short

Groton, Mass. -- The annual Friday-night-at-8 pm-Lawrence-Groton Tournament battle between long-time rivals Lawrence and Cushing went to Lawrence Academy, 4-3, though Lawrence, which jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a Derek Gulizia goal at 5:26 of the third period, had to sweat out the last 12 plus minutes in order to escape with the win.

As usual, the game was hard fought, and played in front of a packed house.

After a scoreless first period, Lawrence got on the board first, as sophomore defense Ryan Walford jumped up into the play, took a nice feed, and fired the puck past Cushing junior goaltender Keith Longo at the 5:25 mark.

Later in the period, with Cushing applying heavy pressure in the Lawrence end, the puck deflected out of the zone. Lawrence sophomore center Patrick Kimball slipped behind the Cushing D, picked up the loose puck right outside the blue line and was off to the races on a clean breakaway. Kimball made the most of his opportunity, snapping the puck past Longo high to the stick side at the 11:27 mark.

Later in the period, Kimball would take a major and game misconduct for a hit from behind on Cushing forward Billy Ryan. On the ensuing five-minute powerplay, Cushing kept the puck in the Lawrence end most of the time, but their shots, though numerous, were primarily from the periphery. The Cushing forwards didn't create much traffic in front, and Lawrence sophomore goaltender Peter Vetri got good looks at most shots.

In the third period, Lawrence defenseman Topher Bevis put his team up by three, scoring a pwer play goal on a wrister from the top of the faceoff circle that beat Longo to the top corner, glove side.

Gulizia stretched the lead to 4-0 when he picked up a loose puck, came down the left side and fired a shot short side that found the open space between pad and post at 5:26.

At that point, Cushing began to turn what appeared to be a sure win for Lawrence into a nail-biter. At 7:38 -- the tournament uses 18-minute periods -- senior defenseman Chris Murray, a Lawrence transfer, took a one-timer from the left point, beating Vetri with a hard, rising shot.

Less than two minutes later, Cushing sophomore center Billy Ryan, ex of Catholic Memorial, lifted a rebound over Vetri to make it a two goal game with 9:28 remaining in the period.

Lawrence took a time out.

For the next five minutes Lawrence barred the door, but Cushing sophomore LW Chris Bourque made it a one-goal game with 3:27 left, knocking the rebound of his own shot past Vetri.

Cushing applied pressure, and pulled Longo as the clock wound down, but couldn't get the equalizer.

Afterward, Lawrence coach Charlie Corey said, "If that game had gone on for another ten minutes I would have had a heart attack."

Roche Paces St. Seb's, 4-1

Byfield, Mass. -- Senior Kenny Roche scored one goal and added two assists in St. Sebastian's 4-1 win over Gov. Dummer here today.

One of Roche's assists came on the game-winning goal when, with 6:54 left in the third period, the South Boston native found his linemate, sophomore Nick Coskren, down low. Coskren stuffed it home to put the Arrows up 2-1.

A few minutes later, St. Sebastian's made it 3-1 when a GDA defenseman made a poor pass up to his right wing, the pass bouncing off the boards behind the breaking forward and rebounding back out toward center ice. St. Seb's senior defenseman Alex DiPietro jumped on it, went in on a breakaway and beat GDA goaltender Don Wieczorek through the five-hole.

Roche backhanded home an empty-netter with 34 seconds remaining to account for the final margin of victory.

GDA's single goal, scored by senior Barry McLaughlin from a scramble in front, came in the first period and put the hosts up 1-0.

In the second period, St. Sebastian's freshman defenseman Colin Young put the Arrows into a 1-1 tie. The puck appeared to go off the skate of a GDA player on the way through to the net.

St. Sebastian's outshot GDA, 31-13 in the game, and that pretty much tells the whole story. Brian McGuirk had a very average game and was hld pointless.

Cushing Nips Exeter, 4-3

Ashburnham, Mass. -- In a crisp, clean, well-played game, host Cushing Academy defeated Exeter here today, 4-3.

Cushing got on the board first, when junior RW Jimmy Russo's turnaround slapper off a rebound beat Exeter goaltender Andrew Edge 4:04 into the game.

But, in what would be the game's dominant recurring theme, Exeter came back less than two minutes later, with ex-Belmont Hill centerman John Halverson slipping one between the pads of Cushing goaltender Keith Longo to tie the game at 1-1.

Right afterward, Exeter's Edge came up with a pair of big back-to-back saves, first on sophomore LW Chris Bourque and then on sophomore RW Billy Ryan.

With 3:07 remaining in the period and Exeter defenseman Andy Gale in the box for holding, Cushing defenseman Keith Yandle had the puck at the point and appeared ready to tee it up. As Exeter's Ryan Clauson went down to block the shot, though, Yandle stepped around him and slid a low shot on net. Cushing sophomore forward Bryan Ewing got his stick on it, then Chris Sabo buried it to send the Penguins into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead .

About five minutes into the second period, Longo stopped Clauson on a breakaway, preserving Cushing's one-goal lead.

At the 8:29 mark, Penguins defenseman Andrew Woodford was sent to the box for interference. Down a man, Cushing's Ewing took a pass from Yandle, slipped between two Exeter defensemen, and scored to give host Cushing a two-goal lead at the 9:14 mark.

But Exeter didn't pack it in, coming back with a goal by Clauson at 15:25, Will Bennett and Taylor Evans assisting.

Cushing answered quickly, though, scoring what turned out to be the game-winning goal just 33 seconds later. Fittingly, it was a beauty, as Bourque, the son of Cushing assistant coach Raymond Bourque, came down the left side and then, at the top of the faceoff circle, cut toward the middle and, in the high slot and with one man on him, held the puck nicely before snapping off a hard wrist shot that sailed top shelf -- a pure goal scorer's goal, and one that will stick in the memory bank of anyone who saw it. Ewing and defenseman Kevin Kessler each picked up assists on the play.

Cushing took a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.

In the third, Exeter LW Bobby Kneeland, a little ball of energy, took a nice long pass from defenseman David Baratta and curled in from the top of the facoff circle, beating Longo top shelf at the 6:19 mark. That cut Cushing's lead to 4-3.

Exeter's best chance to tie it came when Yandle was called for a slash with 5:11 remaining. On the ensuing power play the visitors had a couple of good chances, the best coming when Halverson found Eric LaFreniere open near the corner of the crease. LaFreniere had a sliver of daylight to shoot at and took aim, but his shot hit the side of the net near the post.

With 2:04 remaining Exeter was called for interference, which pretty much killed any remaining chance of a comeback.

Cushing's top line of Bourque (1g), Sabo (1g), and Ewing (1g,2a) figured in three of the Penguins' four goals. Defenseman Yandle had a pair of assists.

For Exeter, Kneeland led the way offensively with a goal and an assist.

Cushing had four penalties in the game; Exeter two. Exeter outshot Cushing 34-28, but that was deceptive -- Cushing had more high-quality chances.

These two teams meet each other again on Sat. Feb. 1 at Exeter.

This, by the way, is a young Cushing team, with only one senior on the top three lines, and one senior defenseman. Roughly half the team consists of sophomores and freshmen.

BB&N 'Beats' St. Seb's, 4-4

Needham, Mass. -- Seconds away from the biggest prep school hockey
upset in recent memory, Buckingham, Browne & Nichols had to settle for a 4-4
tie with St. Sebastian's today when the Arrows' Ted Brzek poked a backhander
past Ed Nehiley with 10.9 seconds left.

With a 4-3 lead going into the third, BB&N didn't sit back, taking the
play to the defending champion Arrows early in the period. At the
five-minute mark, however, Brian Boyle rang one off the post, and after that
St. Seb's swarmed the BB&N net, where they were repeatedly foiled by Nehiley.

After St. Seb's pulled Kevin Regan in the final minute, BB&N's Ian
Hanley hit the post on a shot from center ice.

That set the stage for Brzek's last-minute goal, which came after Boyle
shoveled the puck toward the net from the right-wing boards. Brzek wriggled
away from a BB&N defenseman in front and slipped the puck past Nehiley.

In overtime, Regan denied a backhander by BB&N's Bill Smith, who broke
in alone from the blue line.

Murphy Goal Paces Belmont Hill

Belmont, Mass. -- John Murphy took a centering pass from Ray Ortiz and
snapped a 10-footer over the glove of goalie Peter Vetri 41 seconds into
the third period to give Belmont Hill a 2-1 win over Lawrence Academy today.

Joseph Butler had to make only 15 saves for Belmont Hill, as Lawrence
had trouble generating chances throughout most of the game. But Butler made
some timely stops when Lawrence pressed in the final minutes.

Belmont Hill opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Aaron
Moore, who took a pass from D Matt Tosto.

After Murphy's goal made it 2-0, Lawrence got on the board on a goal by
Joe Keane. After a scrum in the left wing corner, Lawrence's Patrick
Kimball carried behind the net and centered to Keane on the doorstep. He
popped it in at 8:19 of the third to make to 2-1.

For Lawrence, Kimball and D Topher Bevis had strong games. For Belmont
Hill, Moore and Ortiz played well. Also noticeable for Belmont Hill was
eighth-grader Joseph Whitney, an '88, who displayed a nice touch and good
vision. Whitney, a left-shooting center listed at 5'6'' 150 pounds, also
didn't look out of place at the point on the power play.

Belmont Hill outshot Lawrence, 25-16.

Deerfield Hangs on Against Hoggers

Deerfield, Mass. -- Between the final two minutes of the first period and the early minutes of the second period, Deerfield ripped off five rapid-fire goals -- and then let Northfield-Mt. Hermon right back into the game.

What should have been a rocking-chair win for the home team turned into a nail-biter that featured NMH goaltender Jimmy Kalec being pulled for the extra attacker in the final minute. NMH couldn't drive home the equalizer, however, as the game went right down to the final buzzer.

Brown recruit Sean Hurley lead the way for NMH, figuring in all four Hogger goals (2g,2a). Michael Shaw had two goals, and the Germain brothers -- Dave and Matt -- combined for five assists.

For Deerfield, defenseman Paul Baier, also a Brown recruit, had a pair of goals while Darwin Hunt and John Sales each notched a goal and an assist.

The first 15 minutes of play featured hard hitting and good scoring opportunities at both ends, with the edge in play going to Deerfield.

Finally, with about two minutes left in the period a flurry in front of the NMH net had everyone whacking away fruitlessly at a couple of rebounds. Meanwhile defenseman Baier, pinching down low, jumped on the third rebound, flipping it past Kalec to give Deerfield the game's first goal.

Right afterward, a rebound of a Dan Travis shot that hit the far post landed on Danny Shribman's stick. Shribman poped it home for the 2-0 lead.

Fired up, Deerfield came out and added three more early in the second:

Forty seconds into the period, Hunt scored an unassisted goal on a wraparound. 3-0 Big Green.

Then Brian Ciborowksi teed one up from the right face-off circle. 4-0 Big Green.

Then Baier blasted a low shot from the right point that found its way through a crowd. 5-0 Big Green.

NMH coach Jeff Matthews called a timeout and whatever he said worked because shortly afterward, postgrad Michael Shaw, a Belmont, Mass. native, won a draw in the offensive zone and slid left to his off wing. Hurley, at the right point, spotted him, hit him with a diagonal cross-ice pass, and Shaw tucked it in near side to put the Hoggers on the board.

Whatever lift NMH got from that goal, however, appeared to disappear when NMH senior D Ben Ellsworth took a major. However, NMH successfully killed off the penalty.

On the heels of that, Deerfield took a pair of penalties, which gave NMH a lengthy 5-on-3. However, NMH failed to score.

In the final minute of the period, Hurley, who looks like he could be a winger just as easily as a D-man, broke in on a 2-on-1 with Matt Germain. Hurley fired it past Deerfield goalie Dan Smith, a native of rochester, Minn., to send NMH into the second intermission down by three.

In the third period, NMH goaltender Kalec gave his teammates a chance to get all the way back into the game. After stopping Sales on a breakaway, the play turned up ice and Hurley was the man on the spot again, knocking home a rebound to cut Deerfield's lead to 5-3 at the 4:48 mark.

At about this point, the game seemed to lose its flow, as penalties and offsides resulted in far too many whistles.

NMH kep pounding away, though, and made it 5-4 when Hurley, who logged a ton of ice time, fired a low hard shot from the left point that was tipped in by big junior forward Ryan Monaghan with 1:43 remaining.

Deerfield's Chris Kelly took a boarding penalty with 18 seconds left, which, with Kalec pulled, gave NMH six skaters to Deerfield's four. But the guests couldn't knot it up.

For NMH, Sean Hurley had a big-time game, though Shaw and the Germain brothers deserve a nod, too. For Deerfield, Travis, a UNH recruit, was a wrecking ball, while defensemen Baier and Will Boardman had strong games, too. Ciborowski, Sales, Hunt, and Shribman played to expectations. Deerfield's overall defense could have been better, however, from goal right on out. NMH had plenty of room to operate and came close to stealing one from the Big Green.

In addition, Deerfield took too many penalties, 11 to the visitors six. .
