* Dexter Hands Rivers First Loss of Season

Dexter 4 @ Rivers 1 -- Dexter got goals from four different scorers and a strong performance in net from junior Derek Mullahy (23 saves) in a 4-1 road win that knocked Rivers from the ranks of the undefeated.

Dexter went up 1-0 midway through the first when senior Jack Nisbet got a breakaway and his shot just squeaked through the 5-hole of Rivers' senior goalie Aidan Porter.

In the second, Rivers had a penalty shot and a chance to tie the game, but Mullahy stopped Billy Shea.

With 4:38 left in the period, Dexter made it 2-0 on a PPG by John Farinacci, a beauty of a shot, right under the crossbar.

Nearly seven minutes into the third, Rivers came back and cut the Dexter lead to 2-1 off a nice rush up the left side by senior Teddy Wooding, who beat the D and fired one under the crossbar.

But that was as close as Rivers got. With about four minutes left in the game Dexter's Ian Murphy went to the net hard and just shoveled it in for an insurance goal.

In the waning seconds, AJ Caprio added an empty-net goal.

"It was a good game -- back and forth," said Dexter coach Dan Donato. "I thought we were the better team today. And in the handshake line, Shawn McEachern said the same thing. So I felt good about that. We really needed this win. It has huge ramifications for us, and our kids responded."

Once again, Dexter had to play without defensmen Jack Rathbone, who is expected back for the Jan. 12th game at New Hampton, and John Fusco, who is expected back no later than Jan. 25th.

This was only the second time in 13 games that Rivers' goalie Porter, a Princeton recruit, has allowed as many as three goals in a game. He now has a 1.49 GAA and a .947 save percentage.

@ Brunswick 8, Taft 2 -- Taft scored first and last but in between host Brunswick connected for eight consecutive goals, each from a different scorer. Freshmen PJ Neal and Paul Davey each scored their first career goals. And 18 different Brunswick players notched at least one point.

Exeter 4 @ Groton 1 -- Senior Bobby Murray (2g,1a) paced the Exeter attack. Murray, a senior, has 7 goals over his last 4 games. Exeter sophomore goalie Ryan Welch kicked out 24 shots.

@ Albany Academy 7, Portledge 2 -- Seniors David Cicak (1g,2a), Jake Glod (3a), and and Joseph Pasquini (2g) led the Cadets' attack.

St. Sebastian's 4 @ Nobles 4 -- A lot of lead-swapping in this one -- and, at the end, a tie as Nobles' senior Sean Wrenn scored with 2:18 left in the third.

@ Canterbury 3, Williston 2 -- A Jericho Petkovich goal with 1:22 left in regulation lifted Canterbury (5-5-2) back to .500 in NEPSIHA play. Canterbury outshot Williston, 40-37. Both goalies -- Canterbury senior Anthony Cusano (35/37) and Williston junior Greg Iverson (37/40) -- were kept busy.

@ Worcester Academy 4, St. Mark's 4 -- Two third-period goals from senior Chris DelMastro lifted host Worcester Academy to a 4-4 tie with St. Mark's. Worcester is now 6-1-2 in NEPSIHA play.

@ Vermont Academy 3, Holderness 3 -- A goal midway through the third by Vermont senior Calvin Moise lifted his team to the 3-3 tie. Vermont senior Dylan Regan (29/32), who beat KUA in a  43-save effort in early December, now has a 1.97 GAA and a .943 save percentage. Junior Connor Androlewicz kicked out 25 of 28 shots for the Bulls.

Clarke's Hat Trick Leads Westy to 5th Straight Win

Avon, Conn.
-- Talk about streaky. Westminster, which started the season 6-0, then lost five of six, thumped Avon today, 6-2 -- and is now riding a five-game win streak.

This game was not close. Westy, behind a hat trick from junior Sean Clarke, held a 6-0 lead late in the second before Avon got a couple. For the game, Westminster outshot Avon, 41-19. In addition to Clarke's hat trick, Jagger LeClair (1g,1a), Tasso Housakos (2a), and Max Torrez (2a) had multiple points for Westminster. Sophomore goalie Ian Shane (17/19) got the win; Avon junior Alex Aslanidis (35/41) took the loss, though he got very little help from his d-men, or forwards for that matter. Avon, now 9-8-1, was flat, and looked like they were looking ahead to winter break, which started after the game. Westminster, on the other hand, looked sharp as they improved to 12-5-0 and are in position to make a run at the Elite 8.

"Last Monday," said Westminster head coach Tim Joncas, referring to a 2-0 win over Avon up the road in Simsbury, "we played a great 54-minute game, and we carried that through to today. The players came in today feeling good, and confident. This (Avon) is a hard place to play, and this was our fifth game in one and a half weeks, so I just wanted them to keep it simple. Get pucks behind the D, and get pucks below the dots. They executed the game plan, killed off penalties, and to finish this month the way we did was great."

For Avon, the month wasn't even close to great, as they went 3-5-1 since returning from Christmas break.

"Westy's forwards played great," said Avon head coach John Gardner, "as did their D. They beat us soundly. They whipped our ass. They just put it to us."

Pugliese, Loomis Hold Off Williston

Windsor, Conn. -- After the Avon game, we headed up to Windsor, to catch what we could of the Loomis-Williston game. When we arrived for the second period, it was already 2-1 Loomis -- and that is how the game would end.

Our sources report that Loomis soph Cody Hoban scored 5:06 into the game on a one-timer from Anthony Cippolone and Reilly Connors. Loomis went up 2-0 less than two minutes later on a PPG by senior Andrew Lucas, who took it out from behind the net and beat Williston goalie Greg Iverson. Hoban assisted on that one. Williston answered with an unassisted goal from junior D Tim Rego, who was their best player today. But that was it for the game's scoring. Both goalies -- Iverson for Williston and Patrick Pugliese for Loomis -- barred the door the rest of the way.

Williston did come on hard in the third period, working their tail off trying to tie it up, and made the ending quite entertaining, hitting a couple of posts, peppering Pugliese, and putting Loomis back on its heels. But time ran out, and Loomis skated off with the win.

For Loomis, the D pairing of sophomore Kennedy O'Connor and senior Andrew Lucas was excellent, as was the line of Hoban-Cipollone-Connors.

"The team as a whole is playing better systematically," said Loomis head coach JR Zavisza. "Before, we were a little too free-flow. We did some things well today, like score on the power play, which we haven't done consistently lately."

Tabor 3 @ Governor's 3 -- A third period goal from freshman Morgan Winters lifted Tabor to a 3-3 tie.

Pingree 2 @ Brooks 2 -- A Sean O'Connell second period goal lifted Pingree to a 2-2 tie. Shea Grant (40/42) had a big game for Pingree, who were only able to land 15 shots on Brooks goalie Jonathan Carafotes.

@ KUA 2, NMH 0 -- Jordan Harris and Paul Dore provided the goal scoring and senior goaltender Sean Dynan (20/20) posted the shutout for #3 KUA. #5 NMH got another strong performance from senior Eric Green (33/35), but came up short and fell to 16-3-3. KUA is now 18-4-1.

@ Thayer 4, Nobles 3 -- Jay O'Brien (2g,1a) and Tristan Amonte (1g,2a) led The Tigers' offense, while Gavin Fitzpatrick (27/30) earned the win. Sean Wrenn had a pair of goals for Nobles. Thayer improved to 8-9-1.

* Dexter Squeaks Past St. Mark's, 5-4

Southborough, Mass. -- In an entertaining back-and-forth game that featured several lead changes and was 51 seconds from going to OT, Dexter junior John Farinacci scored his second goal of the game to give Dexter a 5-4 win here this afternoon.

Sophomore Chase McInnis also scored a pair for Dexter, while St. Mark's sophomore Danny Ciccarello, who was a force all day, had a hat trick for St. Mark's. And junior Matt Toporowski assisted on all four St. Mark's goals.

Dexter was thin on defense, with John Fusco, Wes Gierkink, and Ben Meehan all out. Jack Rathbone, Bobby Pearl, and Kevin MacKay logged some heavy minutes.

St. Mark's, who we hadn't seen since they were losing three straight to start the season, looked like a different team. If Henry Thrun and Sean Farrell hadn't left for the NTDP after last season, this team would be high in the standings. But St. Mark's head coach Carl Corazzini has a slew of young players who, in a year or two, and with a few additions, could make up the nucleus of a dangerous team.

Dexter had to really work for this one.

"I think we survived," Dexter head coach Dan Donato said. "I thought we gave them too many chances around the net. And without those D to start the offense by getting the puck up to your forwards... we struggled a bit there."

Corazzini said, "Dexter played with a lot of speed and capitalized on the mistakes we made, and on the chances they generated."

"We are young but very competitive," he added. "I was very happy with how we played overall. We forechecked hard, neutralized Rathbone as best we could and scored some nice goals.

"Ciccarello and Toporowski played really well today, and McKennitt was solid in net. If we play that way all the time, we will give ourselves a chance to make the playoffs."

Junior Kevin Pitts scored both Holderness goals. Jaxon Friedman (24/26) got the win; Connor Androlewicz (35/38) took the loss. The win moves Kents Hill above .500 in NEPSIHA play (10-9-1).

* #4 KUA Edges #3 Exeter, 4-3, on Late Harris Goal

Exeter, NH
-- An electrifying rink-length rush on the power play by KUA senior defenseman Jordan Harris ended with his sliding the puck five-hole on Exeter sophomore goalie Ryan Welch to lift the #4 Wildcats to a 4-3 win over #3 Exeter.

Roughly five minutes earlier Exeter had come back from a 3-1 deficit by scoring two goals within 30 seconds, the first a high glove side wrister from PG Peter Scheschareg and the second, to tie it at 3-3, a jam home from a scrum by junior Ethan Abraham.

That was as close as Exeter would get tonight, but it was a worthy comeback considering KUA had scored the first two goals of the game, the first on a partial breakaway by junior Kyle Penney that included a nice deke on Welch at 3:20, and the second a deflection on the PP by senior Matt Egan at 15:12. Just 25 seconds later, Exeter got on the board when junior D Gray Betts, a converted forward, scored on a low shot from the right side, about 10 feet out, to cut KUA's lead to 2-1 going into the first intermission.

The second period was all KUA, as they outshot their hosts 10-4 and scored one goal, from junior Drew Bennett. Welch's work in net kept KUA from running away with it in the second. As it was, Exeter entered the third down 3-1, but made it a game before Harris put it away with his rush late in the period.

Sean Dynan stopped 20 of 23 for the win; Welch (30/34) took the loss.

"This was a good win for us after the loss to Stanstead," said KUA head coach Tim Whitehead. "We were talking about simplifying the game with the puck. And we did manage the puck better than in our previous game. We did a good job defending, taking time and space away."

"I thought Harris and (Bryce) Dolan were exceptional today. Dynan had a great game, too. He was able to sponge pucks when we needed it in the first and third periods."

"I love playing Dana's teams," Whitehead added. "I like playing three 20-minute periods. I like the way they compete. It's a nice rivalry. I'd like to play them twice next year!"

Exeter head coach Dana Barbin said, "KUA is really good in a lot of things. Their skills with their sticks... they're just so quick. As for us, we were down 3-1 in the third and I was happy the way we came back to tie it up. We didn't want that game to be done."

KUA improved to 16-4-1 in NEPSIHA play, while Exeter falls to 16-2-1.

Sat. Dec. 13, 2018 Highlights

* #3 Exeter Too Much for Andover

Exeter, NH -- #3 Exeter had an easy time with archrival Andover here tonight, scoring three goals in the first period, adding two more in the second, and rendering the final 18 minutes academic in a 6-1 rout.

Andover was its own worst enemy in this one, taking too many penalties, including many dumb ones, and overworking its penalty killers, who actually did a good job, although long before the third period came around had totally run out of gas, and were unable to contribute offensively.

Exeter took a 3-0 lead in the first, as Andrew Seaman, Paddy Bogart, and Kyle Jadatz each scored.

The second was a key period. The ice was seriously tilted Exeter's way and Andover had to run trying to contain Exeter's PP, which is an aggressive one. The Barbinmen don't spend 60+ seconds working the puck around the perimeter before taking a shot. They tend to shoot frequently and follow to the net hard. Andover sophomore goalie Charlie Archer didn't lack for work: SOG in the second were 22-3 in favor of Exeter. Exeter only had two goals in the period -- one from Jadatz, his second of the game, and a PP tally from Sam Stone.

Michael Pitts had 4 assists, Bobby Murray had 3, Jadatz had two goals, and Sam Stone had a goal and an assist.

Exeter sophomore goalie Ryan Welch (18/19) was his usual self. With Exeter up 3-0 late in the first, Andover junior center Christian Powers took off on a breakaway, but Welch flashed the right pad and came up with a big save that could have opened the door a tiny bit for Andover. Exeter, despite the lopsided win, gave up too many breakaways, something they need to work on.

"It's always nice to get off to a good start and get the momentum," said Exeter head coach Dana Barbin. We have a team with good depth. We'll lose some games, but we won't be easy to beat. We have good leaders with my two captains, Jadatz and Stone. They play the game right and it spreads through the lineup. Bobby Murray is a special player, He's strong as a bull and he can shoot it through the back of the net. To be honest, this is the most depth I've had in my three decades here. I've had teams with more Div. I players, but I've never had four full lines who know how to play and play the right way like these guys."

Andover head coach Paul Tortorella was less sanguine. "Exeter is a great team," he said. "We got behind and we couldn't overcome the penalties. Hat's off to them."

Wed. Jan. 10 Highlights

* Holmes, Willits, Capone Line Lead #1 Salisbury Past Cushing

Ashburnham, Mass.
-- The line of Matt Holmes (2g), Brett Willits (3a), and Nick Capone (2g) paced #1 Salisbury to a 6-3 win over #6 Cushing here today.

In the early going, things weren't looking good for the visiting Knights. For most of the first stanza, the ice was tilted Cushing's way as the Penguins peppered Salisbury PG goalie Bryan McGrath. Cushing, which would have 4 or 5 breakaways in the game, could have jumped to an early lead when Michael Outzen sprung Jake Hewitt for a breakaway. But no dice: McGrath was up for it.

The first Salisbury shot worthy of the name came 11 minutes into the period. Then, a few minutes later, with 3:16 on the clock, Willits slipped a nice cross-crease pass to sophomore Nick Capone. Just like that, 1-0 Salisbury.

Cushing almost tied it up on the next shift , as defenseman Nolan McElhaney's shot from the left point hit the post to McGrath's glove side.

With 1:20 left in the period, McElhaney mishandled the puck at the offensive blueline, allowing Holmes to break in alone, beating Cushing sophomore goalie Joey Sharib and making it 2-0.

Cushing came out hard again in the second period, but to no avail.

Instead, Salisbury scored a pair of goals three minutes apart, the first by sophomore Matt DeBoer, from Nick Hale; the second from senior Chris Brown, off a nice rush into the zone by junior D Luke Krys.

Suddenly, it was 4-0, and halfway through the second period. But Cushing didn't quit, scoring three of the game's next four goals.

The Penguins' first goal came when D Brad Zona fired a shot that hit McGrath and rebounded high off the chest of Cushing sophomore Connor Wood, the trailer driving to the net.

Salisbury got it right back, on the PP, as Peter DiLiberatore shot from the left point and Holmes reached around Sharib for the rebound, tucking it home to give Salisbury a 5-1 lead at the 11:12 mark.

But, with 1:52 left in the period, a McElhaney shot from the right point found its way through traffic to cut Salisbury's lead to 5-2 going into the intermission. In the second period, Cushing outshot Salisbury, 24-14.

In the third, Cushing made things interesting early when junior wing Pat Borella scored from a scrum in front to cut Salisbury's lead to 5-3.

But that was as close as it got. Capone scored his second of the night, tucking home a loose puck inches from the goal line, giving Salisbury a 6-3 lead, which is how things ended.

Salisbury's McGrath kicked out 46 of 49 shots for the win. Joey Sharib (27/33) took the loss. One of the keys to this game was that Salisbury had a line that was dangerous all night. Cushing on the other hand, got very little out of their top two senior offensive leaders -- Vilho Saariluoma and Matt Guerra. They were quiet.

Salisbury remains undefeated at 10-0-1; Cushing falls to 11-4-1.

"We came out slow," Salisbury head coach Andrew Will said afterward. "True bus legs. A three-hour trip. But I am not making excuses. McGrath was fantastic until we found our rhythm."

The first two goals "gave us momentum and confidence," added Will. "Then it became a game where we didn't do a great job valuing the puck. We did some standing around watching. But credit to Cushing. They worked their tails off. They were hungry. We just had a few guys make plays. Matty Holmes was terrific today, involved in all three zones. Nick Capone gave us a nice physical presence. Luke Krys was excellent -- played with his head up; moved his feet. I have to give credit to our penalty killers. Nick Lachaine and Michael Fairfax were excellent."

At the other end of the hall, Cushing head coach Steve Jacobs said, "We battled. We had five breakaways. If we had just gotten a couple of goals in the early going we might have been OK. But Salisbury is not a team that will back down. We put a lot of pressure on them in the first period, but they came back."

Andover 5 @ Tilton 3 -- Andover pulled one out of the hat here today as, after Tilton had come back from a 3-1 deficit to tie it at 3-3 with less than 8 minutes left, the Big Blue got what turned out to be the GWG from senior Dante Maribito. Senior Jack Cusack added an empty-netter. Andover improves to a game over .500 at 6-5-0.

@ Canterbury 6, Choate 3 -- Jericho Petkovich (3g) and Connor Amsely (3a) led Canterbury attack. Patrick Mullowney (1g,1a) led the Wild Boars' scorers. Canterbury senior goalie Anthony Cusano (27/30) picked up the win.
